Summary:

A
flicker of shadows among the trees to his right was the only warning he got
before death loomed at the end of a sword aimed at his neck. He ducked and
turned into the blow, the hiss of folded steel passing harmlessly above his
head while his own blade slid through flesh, between ribs into a beating heart.
Naruto
wrenched his ninjatō clear of his assailant�s chest, idly taking note of
the plain grey vest and scratched cloud hitai-ate where she pressed against his
side. The rich stench of fresh blood dominated his senses. Naruto let his
nostrils flair as he inhaled deeply: the fear was sour; the panic, rank; the
scent of fertile female, sharp but
fading fast. His blood burned. His eyes burned. The body slid and fell
awkwardly, knees bent under. Eyes glassy. Staring.
Staring.
Kill. The voice urged. Behind.
The air
displaced. Kunai and shuriken raced past and thudded into the log he�d substituted
himself with. Naruto fled to the trees. Branch to branch, his feet barely
touched bark before exploding into motion, sending him forward; always forward,
the wind tore at him, wound past him; he was the wind. His blood sang with the
hunt.
A sea of
clones rose up to defend him as the partner to his first assailant broke cover
with a second volley of sharp steel. Naruto flash-stepped through the dense
smoke of exploding clones and caught the wiry shinobi mid-jump, his ninjatō
flashed and was blocked by two kunai held by desperate straining arms.
Weak mortal flesh! Kyūbi
scoffed triumphantly.
His prey
faltered under Naruto�s feral snarl. The man�s eyes widened. Blue. His eyes
were blue. And they noticed Naruto was holding his ninjatō with only his
left hand too late.
�FUUTON: RASENGAN!�
The
ripping ball of wind slammed into his chest, dissolving fabric and flesh into
shredded paper, scattering it, making a bloody mess.
Naruto
flipped with the gale-force backlash and landed calmly back in the clearing, victorious
rumble vibrating past bared teeth and curled lips. Moments later several fleshy
thunks
announced the landing splatter of his former opponent. Blood fell like rain.
In that
moment the scent of blood and death and victory was sweeter than ramen, sweeter
than sex�it was the meaning of life, it enriched the meaning of life. Naruto
was juiced with enough adrenaline and fury at that moment that all his senses
were in overdrive. The veins of leaves across the clearing were sharp in relief;
the rustling they made loud and obnoxious, competing with the hush of insect
wings. He cocked his head as he heard a distant growl which was followed by
ripping flesh and a despairing gurgling.
Naruto
took to the trees again.
A couple
of klicks deeper into the forest, he paused his
progress under the shade of deep foliage on a branch to survey his partners and
their kill before dropping down to join them.
Akamaru�s muzzle was wet and dripping blood. The missing
chunk of the last of their targets� neck revealed the method of his demise. Akamaru
looked quite satisfied with himself as he sat at his master�s side, his tongue
hanging carelessly out the side of his mouth, panting. Meanwhile, Kiba
scavenged through the dead missing-nin�s pockets,
disregarding the blood still trickling from the gaping neck-wound.
Naruto
dispatched a number of clones to secure the perimeter, and no sooner had he
done so than Kiba produced a scroll and a victorious smirk.
A smirk which quickly disappeared when he caught sight of Naruto.
�What the � what happened to you?�
Naruto
took several deep calming breaths, willing his eyes to stop burning; hands to
stop clenching. He was a bit dirty, after all, covered
in bodily fluids, hair matted and tinted red.
His
voice barely sounded human even to his own ears. �They had backup. Confirm the
contents. We need to move.�
Kiba
pulled his eyes from the bloody sight in front of him and double-checked the
seal. �Yeah. This is it.� He stowed it into his pouch
and regarded Naruto carefully. �You sure you�re okay? That�s not all your blood
is it?�
�No.
None of it is. I�m fine,� Naruto said shortly, trying and failing to rein the
fury that was his voice. He realized he still had his sword out and slammed it
back into its sheath. Alien thoughts bristled through his mind; thoughts he
couldn�t help; thoughts of violence and dominance and blind fury. He was walking a line pulled
taught just waiting to snap. He cursed his own inattentiveness. If that second
group hadn�t got the drop on him he wouldn�t have had to tap Kyūbi�s
chakra. Always messed with his thoughts. Always took
forever to clean out from his coils.
�Akamaru, point. Kiba, middle. I�ll
take rear. Move!� he ordered.
Kiba snapped
his mouth shut with a click of sharp canines, keeping his belligerent reply to
himself. He shared a knowing look with his furry companion, but for once, listened
without arguing. Naruto growled with relief as he moved into the rearguard
position while his clones assumed a loose arrowhead formation ahead. Akamaru set
a blistering pace for which Naruto was grateful�it would help work off some of
steam.
He could
feel Kyūbi preening in the back of his mind, reliving each kill in
picture-perfect clarity. His blood thrummed, heart pumped wildly in response. Muscles
vibrated as he ran, hands clenching, unclenching rhythmically in time with his
heart. Kyūbi was excited. He was excited.
It would
be a long, tense trip back to Konoha.

�Good
work the two of you.� Tsunade concluded at the end of
their debrief. �Anything else to
report?�
�Just �
hey, maybe I�m wrong about this but,� Kiba�s coat rustled as he shrugged
lazily, �with the four I dealt with and the twelve Naruto took�seems a bit
excessive.�
He could
feel Kiba�s eyes on him. Naruto had kept them closed throughout the briefing.
He didn�t think he could restrain himself from challenging Tsunade�s
authority if he looked at her. He�d want blood. He�d want a reckoning. But it
would be different this time. This time he was stronger. He knew he was stronger. If he fought Tsunade she�d get hurt�die even. So he kept his eyes closed
and ignored everything but direct questions.
Kiba
made an annoyed sound in his throat when it was clear Naruto wasn�t going to
add something and continued. �It�s rare for a private corporation to get their
hands on so many missing nin all at once. And their
equipment was all brand-new�not the usual crap you see on second-rate missing nins.�
�You
think they weren�t so �missing�, after all?� Tsunade
inquired. Wet strokes of her brush moved quickly across vellum.
�I�m
saying it�s strange, that�s all.�
�Thank
you. Kiba, Akamaru � you�re dismissed. Naruto, stay behind.�
Said
blond opened his eyes and glared at his feet where dried blood was flaking off
onto the well-tread wooden floor. Kiba and Akamaru both sent him concerned looks
on their way out. He relaxed fractionally when Kiba gripped his shoulder and
squeezed. Then he was alone with Tsunade.
�You
don�t have to speak,� Tsunade said, her brush
scribbling furiously. �I�m giving you the next week off with pay, and I�m
isolating training ground eighty-six for you if you need to work off some
steam.� She passed him his orders over the desk. Naruto opened them, glanced
through them quickly and nodded.
He
swallowed through a throat suddenly thick with guilt. ��M
sorry.� His voice was still rough, aggressive. The words didn�t fit.
They sounded more like a challenge than an apology.
She took
no offense. �Don�t be. You did what you had to to
survive. You think I begrudge you that?� Tsunade
declared with her usual stern authority, he didn�t need to look to know her
eyes looked at him with a tender sort of affection that always threw him. Naruto
licked his lips thirstily, glanced up then back down again. She continued
softly: �There are volunteers this time�if you need something to take the edge
off.�
Naruto
glared at the floor. Sharp claws bit into his palms.
�Look,
Naruto. It�s not exactly a secret in ANBU. They watch you through the best of
times and the worst of times. They like
you. They just want to help. I had nothing to do with the offer.�
Words
got stuck in the back of his throat, so he shook his head wildly in the
negative instead. He was furious and embarrassed. They watched him doing that?
�Very
well, I won�t push you. But they are
there if you need help.� Tsunade�s voice was weary.
�You�re dismissed. Good work.�
Naruto
fled out the window.

He
inhaled his ramen�almost quite literally. He ate with his face hovering in such
a way that if he leaned one tiny fraction of a span further, his nose would
find itself submerged in ramen. He inhaled the smell of broth and miso and steam as if his life depended on it. The position
helped him ignore the busy street behind him and the other patrons of Ichiraku
Ramen.
The
smells were the worst part. With Kyūbi chakra still infecting his own, all
five of his senses felt like they were on illegal stimulants imported by Orochimaru. In the forest it wasn�t so bad. He could out
smell Kakashi�s harem of dogs�great for tracking missions; he and Kiba were
Konoha�s one and only perfect record tracking team, and that was cool and
everything, but having a sensitive nose in Konoha or in cities? It was a
nightmare. Why?
Because humans are vile and smelly creatures.
The man two seats down savouring sake in the middle of the
afternoon? He hadn�t quite washed his hands after his last trip to the
washroom. He smelled of ammonia and urine and feces.
The pretty brunette to his left hanging off his arm? Yeah.
She smelled of fertile fuck-me pheromones,
and reeked of sweat and sex and leavings�a man�s claim. Another man�s claim, Naruto corrected,
and not the same scent as the one whose arm she clung to. It made his nose
itch.
And
sewer covers? Yeah. Those aren�t as airtight as they look. Poor, smaller towns
with open sewers were the worst. The first time he�d caught a whiff of one of
those on a mission he�d vomited and passed-out.
Teuchi
and his daughter were okay. They both were so saturated with the smell of ramen
that he could ignore their other bodily smells. Ayame only gave him trouble
when she was having a period. The smell of blood always made him have the
inexplicable urge to jump the counter, throw her onto the counter, rip off all her clothes and fuck her doggy-style in public so everyone would damn well
know who owned her.
Kyūbi
always cackled in the back of his mind when he got these �urges�.
Naruto
wondered if all animals who lived around humans learned how to mouth-breath. It
was his third favourite hobby after training and eating ramen, and that was
saying something. No wonder animals of the higher orders avoided humans. He�d
avoid himself too if he smelled as bad as most humans did. It wasn�t that a
human�s natural body odour was offensive. No, natural musk wasn�t a problem so
long as a human was physically active. The ones who sat around all day eating,
signing papers, arguing over wool prices, eating some more(the cheese eaters
were the worst�vile), never working up a healthy sweat to cleanse their bodies,
smothering their bodies with fake perfumes and makeup and cleansers; their
scents were rancid, stale, fake � unnatural.
A shift
of the air, the whump
of the cushion next to his, familiar scent of lavender and power; Hinata had
arrived, she sat close, her expression concentrated, concerned. Naruto closed
his eyes and kept eating; his nose was touching the broth now.
Kami help me.
�Naruto-kun.� His name was said quietly, respectfully. Maybe
even a bit hopefully. �Welcome back.�
Around
so many humans his blood had begun to cool. But one whiff of his girlfriend,
the woman he�d shared a bed with several times? The fury and power, desire and want, lust and urge;
they all hit him like a drunken Lee trying to make new friends. The chopsticks
in his hand snapped; brittle wood fell into his ramen. Naruto couldn�t bring
himself to care. He was clinging to that shred of human-will he still
maintained so he stopped breathing all together.
�Naruto? Are you all right? You�re covered in blood.� She
was only concerned of course. She was like that. Always
concerned. She cared. Kami, she cared. That
was the worst part. Because the things he wanted to do to her in his mind
weren�t gentle or loving or fond.
She
reached out, intent on laying a gentle, delicate hand on his shoulder.
�D-don�t
touch me!� he snapped pulling away.
He slammed money down on the table and twisted off the stool. He needed to get
away before he snapped. �Don�t touch me � just�stay away. Please.� His voice
should have scared her off. It was enough the first couple of times this had
happened. She�d given him space.
But not this time. This time when he walked away, she
followed. Of course she followed. Hinata was stubborn and unrelenting when she wanted
to be. It just so happened when it came to him she was obstinate and
unrelenting.
For once in your life Hinata, be a wallflower for me. Please, Kami,
just leave me the fuck alone!
Strong kits,
was Kyūbi�s helpful advice along with another surge of chakra that set his
blood boiling. Kyūbi was enamoured with the idea of kits. Maybe because as the strongest demon on the planet he�d never found
a worthy mate�maybe never even contemplated one. After all, reproduction
was the assembly-line of mortal beings. What use did an immortal existence have
for progeny? Sex was also a new concept to the demon. Kyūbi didn�t do sex. Kyūbi took domination,
destruction, and hatred to another level entirely. But sex? Consenting sex? After Naruto first got
laid the bloody nine-tails had been insatiable.
An immortal demon had learned
something new after eons of existence and couldn�t get enough of it�the
rougher, the better. And of course Kyūbi being�well�Kyūbi�he was more into the sex than
the consenting part. In his little world the strong could do as they pleased.
The weak lived to serve the strong. Kyūbi honestly wasn�t capable of
understanding the concept of restraint or compassion. It was these sorts of
thoughts Naruto was constantly trying to suppress.
She
followed him doggedly down the street, pacing him. He knew she was there. He
could hear every breath she took, every crease of her coat, the shifting of
fabric over pale flesh. Thankfully, her scent had vanished. Naruto was walking
upwind, which left her downwind. A small reprieve.
He�d take what he could get.
�Naruto�wait.
Please?� she implored.
He
stopped. Pedestrian traffic broke around them like waves. Civilians always gave
shinobi who looked like they just got back from a mission a wide berth,
unwilling to risk the chance the shinobi in question hadn�t geared-down their
hair-trigger killing reflexes. The blood flaking off his clothes probably
didn�t inspire much confidence in the well-known Kyūbi-container.
�I-I
want to help. I know�I know you have trouble,� she paused to take a breath of
courage, �t-trouble controlling your�your�� she trailed off, blushed furiously,
then came back strong. �I want to help. I � I can help.�
Naruto
was a split second away from dragging her down the nearest alley, throwing her
up against a wall, and taking her then and there. But he didn�t. He didn�t
because he remembered in his mind�s eye how shy and delicate Hinata was during
sex. How she cried for what seemed like hours after their first time, even
though he�d been so gentle. How he had to force himself to move in slow-motion
in the only way Hinata seemed to enjoy sex. The tender sort.
The restrained sort.
There
was no way he could manage that as he was now. Not with Kyūbi looking out
behind his eyes, all too interested with the prospect of more sex.
The one
time he�d tried to be a little more �energetic� during sex had had Hinata
flinching away from his touch for a month. He couldn�t do that again. Not when
she was one of the few who would let
him touch her like that. He needed
that. Touch.
�You
don�t know what you�re saying,� Naruto muttered. �I�d hurt you. I don�t want to hurt you.�
Her
voice was filled with desperate determination. She spoke softly: �Y-you�ve
always done so much for me. I want � I want to do this for you. I don�t like
seeing you like this.�
�You
think I do!?� He snarled, and bit his lip to silence himself. She recoiled. �Hinata. The last time I touched you the way I wanted to, you avoided me for a month.
This�this would be a hundred times worse.�
No
matter how brave she was, she couldn�t hide her relief from his nose. It stank.
�I just
� I wanted to be strong for you,� her voice broke. The dam broke. She shook
helplessly, crying tears smelling of the sea and storm. They should have
bothered him, sent him frantically trying to reassure her. But with
Kyūbi�s chakra messing with his head, the only emotion he felt was
contempt and pity�and he hated himself for feeling it, even if it wasn�t his
own thoughts.
Tears are for those who despair, the
voice whispered, for those who are not
yet strong enough to overcome themselves.
Tears aren�t ONLY for despair, Naruto
snapped back. There are happy tears. Sad
tears. Tears of goodbye. Tears don�t mean weakness.
Smell. Her tears smell of despair, the voice
retorted maliciously. Wasn�t it you,
after all, when you were little, who vowed never to cry tears of despair again?
Decided that they served no purpose, because no-one cared.
And if no-one cared, then those tears serve no purpose; so you decided to be
strong enough that you would never cry those tears again.
Naruto
shook his head viciously, silencing the voice.
�You are
strong, Hinata,� Naruto intoned gruffly. �But so am I. This is something I need
to deal with. Alone.�
Naruto�s
steps faltered a moment before continuing on.
Hinata
didn�t follow.

Training
field eighty-six was his refuge when he just needed to blow off steam. The
quicker he exhausted his chakra, the quicker he�d get through the Kyūbi�s
influence on his body and mind. The theory was simple:
Train
until collapse. Expel the existing Kyūbi chakra, and take no-more until his own stores replenished. The first step on that path was
getting out of his semi-Kyubified transformation:
i.e. get rid of the extra chitin decorating his fingers and the scary incisors
inhabiting his mouth.
The
practice was a bit different. It was the case of �one foot in the door�. Once
Kyūbi got access to his chakra, it was practically impossible to shut him
out of it, simply because his system liked
drawing Kyūbi�s chakra, it didn�t want
to stop�especially when his chakra became low�it was getting to be second
nature to borrow more chakra from the Kyūbi, and he often found himself doing
so without conscious thought.
Ever
since the old pervert had messed with his seal and unleashed his four-tailed
form his body had taken a liking to the demonic chakra, and its capacity to use that same corrosive chakra had begun
to steadily increase the more he used it. He couldn�t even use an elemental
seal to stop the Kyūbi chakra from leaking into his system anymore. Not
from lack of trying. The seal just wouldn�t stick. It couldn�t break the
current and set up a block before shattering under the immense pressure.
The training
ground was a mess; broken trees and muddy pits, sticks and stones strewn
everywhere. Tsunade was going to have to pay a
fortune of D-rank missions to get it repaired. Naruto stared down at his hands,
bloody stripes from his last wind-techniques healing even as he watched,
steaming as the flesh knitted.
He was a
bit worried. Not because he was healing�that was expected. It was his hands.
His nails or � claws, currently. They weren�t returning to normal. In his mouth
his tongue still encountered viciously sharp canines, he pricked himself
accidentally and the warm taste of blood filled his mouth briefly before it
healed over.
Naruto
fell onto his bottom and crossed his legs. He should be tired � exhausted by
now. He�d used all of his S-rank techniques and blown the nearby landscape to
smithereens, and he still had gas
left in the tank.
�Fuck,�
Naruto growled. �What the fuck is
wrong with me?�
He could
feel the pulse of nature now that he was still. It reached out to him with
welcoming arms�nature. The natural energy of the world loved sages because it
saw them as one of her own. Doubly so with Naruto, whom
nature saw as part-demon�another part of life and death. Where humans saw evil,
nature saw death. Death wasn�t evil, it was just
another part of life. For there to be new life there must be death. Naruto
still had trouble understanding nature�s logic sometimes�mostly because she
didn�t communicate with words, but with sensations and feelings. She didn�t
understand why humans feared death,
because to her it was the ultimate form of new life, the continuation of the
cycle of balance that without would leave the world in barren ruin.
Immortal
beings always had trouble rationalizing mortal beings� fear of death for some
reason. Kyūbi was the same.
Nature
also didn�t understand why Naruto refused to embrace the caustic energy sealed
inside him. That�s why Naruto was always hesitant to meditate and enter
sage-mode when he was partially Kyubified. Nature had
a way of feeling blissfully addictive when he was in such a state and he was
convinced it was her own way of telling him he was being silly and all too
human for her liking.
Ever try
to tell a soulless immortal existence with a mothering complex to mind her own business without the benefit of words like �no�, and
�go away�? He might as well convince Tsunade to give
up sake and gambling, or Guy to give up green, or Jiraiya to give up peeping.
He felt
the presence of his watchers increase by one; a familiar signature that dared
approach him when the ANBU had left well enough alone�and good riddance, those
fucking peeping toms.
�Kiba,�
Naruto acknowledged, not opening his eyes. Kiba�s chakra was primal, in tune
with nature to a degree that only Jiraiya held�all Inuzukas were like that. It
was why Tsunade had paired them up as a team. When
Naruto went into Kyubified Sage-mode, Kiba was one of
the few who could safely approach. Even nature agreed with him, she looked at
the Inuzuka like she did any other animal in her great kingdom. They were her
own, even if they didn�t know it.
A low, impressed whistle. �Kami. You did a number on this place.� He hid his
fury well, but Naruto and he were of kin; voice can be moderated, muscles can
be trained to relax, but nothing could hide the scent, the adrenaline, the
musky rage.
Naruto
swallowed his guilt. �Is she alright?�
Kiba�s
answer was a vicious right hook that knocked him over and sent him rolling.
When he
came to a stop, Naruto lay still. The punch hadn�t hurt so much as the emotions
behind it. Kiba loved Hinata. He�d proved it when, Inuzuka-style, Kiba had
challenged him for dominance and ended up in the hospital in a coma. He could
hear the furious breathing of the Inuzuka through his nose.
�You
don�t understand,� Naruto croaked. He opened his eyes and pushed himself to his
feet. His eyes were beginning to burn again at the perceived challenge�he
relentlessly squashed the urge to tear Kiba�s arms off for hitting him. It
helped that the proud Inuzuka was cradling his now injured fist close to his
body. One of the knuckles jutted at an odd angle. �I don�t want to hurt her.�
�Hurt
her? Hurt her? Are you even listening
to yourself? You rejected her. You
couldn�t have hurt her more!� Kiba yelled. �I found her crying! CRYING! You promised, you swore you�d
never do anything to hurt her, and then you pull shit like this every time you
have a tough mission.�
�Shut
up. SHUT � UP!� Naruto roared.
�Would you rather I rape her? Break her? I�m this close, Kiba, to the edge. This � close,� he said showing off his
claws. �Can you imagine what these would do to her? What I could do to her?� He indicated the training ground and laughed
bitterly. �This is nothing.� He drew a shaky breath. �If you knew the
thoughts in my head��
Kiba
grit his teeth and narrowed his eyes, which had long since gone feral, slit,
and gleamed with rage, his own claws had sprouted with his blooming fury. �Then
you insult her by continuing this�this charade! Is it a game to you?�
Naruto
bit back an inhuman growl. �What the � what are you on about kibble-brain? I
love Hinata.�
�Do you?
Because it sure doesn�t seem like it from here,� Kiba spat.
�The FUCK do you know about me?� Naruto
growled, his own rage fired and stoked by his burning blood and the massive
power of nature that swirled through him, promising endless destruction; blood
of his enemies.
Kiba
wasn�t daunted. He stalked forward, a predator on the hunt, claws bent and
threatening. �By denying her your anger, your rage, your strength, you are
saying loud and clear that you do not respect her. You do not respect her
strength. You believe she is too weak
to be your mate. You are not being kind!
You are being the worst sort of
patronizing and cruel! That�s not
love! That�s a mockery of it!� Kiba lashed out and caught Naruto flat-footed.
Claws raked across his cheeks and sent him tumbling to the ground. He dug his
claw into the dirt and righted himself. He must have lost sage-mode, because blood
trickled down his face and spattered on the wet, churned earth. �Mates are
equal in everything. Mates fight to confirm their strength! But you � you! You don�t see her as your equal, do
you? You aren�t loving her. You�re pitying her.
Or maybe you�re pitying yourself,� Kiba spat, disgust evident in his voice.
The plug
got pulled. All the rage drained away to nothing but the bitter taste of blood

rumble of his growl thundered across the clearing, sending birds bursting into
flight. Air thickened with the killing intent of a half-demon, half-sage
hybrid.
Alien
thoughts swirled through his head. Outrage. How dare
a flea-bitten mongrel challenge him. Certainty. He�d crush the mouthy puppy. Show him his
place. Make him beg for mercy. Consternation.
He�d already made the mongrel submit.
If defeat wasn�t enough�then he would humiliate
him. Make the whiny runt debase
himself at his feet like the disobedient puppy that he was.
Naruto
snarled, matching the one on the mongrel�s curled lips. Kiba kicked off his
sandals and tossed his jacket aside, never taking his eyes away from his
opponent, and dropped onto all fours.
Mud
churned. Naruto leapt and met Kiba midair, the
centrifugal forces of their collision made them hit and turn clockwise. Snapping maws of sharp teeth. Claws
ripping, tearing, scrabbling together. Finding purchase, knocking Kiba�s
claws away from his throat, Naruto reared backwards and slung his head forward
with a roar, smashing his hitai-ate into Kiba�s unprotected nose.
Crunch. Blood
spurted all over their faces. Kiba was knocked to the ground where he lay, face
up and dazed, teeth bared in a rictus of pain. Naruto used the impact to flip
backwards. He landed on all fours snarling at Kiba who was struggling to his
feet dazedly, tears of pain streaming from his narrowed and bloodshot eyes.
A bit of
Kiba�s blood, smelling heady and sweet, dripped off Naruto�s hitai-ate and
dribbled down the bridge of his nose to the corner of his mouth. His tongue
darted out, catching it, drawing it back into his mouth. A red haze descended
across his vision as the taste of Kiba exploded against his taste buds.
And it
was wonderful.
Kyūbi was laughing. Joyously.
It held the air of madness and pain and some sick perverse enjoyment. Naruto
felt it too. He watched proudly as Kiba carefully reached up and straightened
his nose with another audible crunch
of grinding bone.
Naruto
tensed, ducked out of the way as Kiba vanished briefly only to reappear a few
feet away, his lethal claws hissing through the air. A pivot and Naruto tackled
his aggressor, bearing him several feet backwards with the force of his coming.
They went down in a tangle of flailing limbs, scrabbling and clawing at exposed
flesh. He was on top. Kiba was on top. Feet slipped, dug into the ground to
find purchase, to flail in the air. Knees banged; grunts of flailing bones
finding targets with dull thudding impacts. Naruto yelped as Kiba somehow
managed to sink his canines into the flesh of his shoulder.
�Enough!� Naruto bellowed, and the earth
seemed to echo in agreement. He grabbed a handful of Kiba�s hair and ripped the
Inuzuka�s fangs from his flesh. Kiba was no heavier than
Akamaru when he had been a puppy�at least that�s how he seemed right then�and
no stronger. When Naruto got his foot under Kiba�s stomach and viciously shoved
him back, he sailed across the clearing, skipped over the lip of a crater and
came to a crashing rest against a skinned tree that split up the seam from the
impact and vibrated like an arrow freshly struck in a target.
The
earth churned under Naruto�s feet as he barrelled after, leaping across the
crater and ploughing straight into Kiba�s struggling figure. The tree exploded
into a storm of crackling splinters.
The
chakra signatures of the watching ANBU, which Naruto in his rage had labelled
as passive threats, scattered to avoid the fallout.
Their
passage had dug a new trench of hollow earth and broken roots and feelers and
rocks. Kiba lay underneath him, whimpering. His chest heaved. A bit of blood
from his torn cheek was steadily leaking onto the dry earth, clotting and
bunching where it fell. His eyes were rolling, dazed, clouded with pain and confusion.
Naruto hovered over his fallen foe on all fours, surveying the damage with a
pleased rumble deep in his chest.

sister loomed over him and examined him critically. When she laughed Kiba�s
expression on the bed darkened.

directly.� But now that Kiba had asked, Kyubi was

Kiba stretched, winced and glanced down at his ribs, and carefully leaned back

couldn�t help but think back to Tsunade�s comment
then, that he didn�t understand what went on in the Inuzuka packs.
�You�ve
had worse?� Naruto muttered. �I�ve
nearly killed you twice, and you say you�ve had worse?�
�What

She
nodded furtively and stepped past him with haste, as if desperate to use her
courage while it still remained with her. Her steps took her into the middle of
the room where she stopped and fidgeted with her fingers. She hadn�t done that
in years.
Naruto
closed the door softly, but even so, the noise startled Hinata. She looked at
him; she looked out the window, staring blankly at the face of the tree outside
his window.
�Have
you eaten? We could�we could go out,� he offered. His smile felt flat and fake
on his face.
Hinata
turned to face him, eyes shining brightly. �It hurts � so much.�
�What
hurts?� he asked, and moved forward concernedly to embrace her. Hinata avoided
his eyes and stepped back a pace. Naruto faltered and let his arms drop. �Hinata?�
�This
afternoon�� Hinata whispered. Her voice cracked.
�I�m
sorry. I�you know how I get, Hinata. You know
how dangerous it is��
�That�s
not it! Not it at all! It hurts�so much,�
she repeated. Tears welled. Tears fell. �I can�t be there when you need me. Why
can�t I be there when you need me? Why can�t I be strong enough? Why not � why not me?�
Naruto
wanted to wrap her up in his arms and tell her it was okay. It was okay that
she couldn�t help. That it didn�t matter. It shouldn�t matter! It was enough
that she wanted to help. That was
enough for him! But standing in front of a visibly distressed woman who he
loved, he couldn�t say anything of the sort. He had said as much before. But�it
did matter. It mattered because it mattered to Hinata.
How
hollow such words must have sounded. How she must have hated them.
You�re not being kind! You�re being the
worst sort of patronizing and cruel! Kiba�s words were heavy.
�Hinata��
he trailed off. I love you, he wanted
to say. �I need you, he wanted to reassure. But he
couldn�t bring himself to say that either. It was unfair. Everything he felt,
everything he wanted to say to her would just hurt her some more. He was giving
her expectations that she didn�t need to do anything to fulfill. How empty that was. How dreadfully empty.
His own
eyes began to sting with salty tears that wouldn�t fall, throat contracted so
tightly it was a miracle he was still managing to breathe.
�I-I�m
taking a long-term � m-mission to Suna,� said Hinata
in the laden silence. �That�s � that�s what I came here to say. I�m leaving
tomorrow m-morning. This�� she said in a broken quiet manner, ��is for the
best. I need time � away � to th-think. Th-that�s all I came
here to say.�
�When
will you be back?� Naruto asked hoarsely, grasping at thin air and coming up
empty.
She
never gave him an answer before she left, as timid and quietly as she had come.
She just shook her head frantically, her cheeks streaked and wet and
glistening, and left without another word. And when the door closed behind her
Naruto just stood there, feeling turned inside-out and upside-down and not a
bit lost�a lot lost! full of loss! and
not knowing what to do about it.

Five

flipped open the folder and pushed it across the desk, so he could see it. A
great red stamp greeted his perusal.
�I�m
denying your application for the ANBU corps,� Tsunade
said.
�What!? Why?� Naruto slammed his arms down on her desk and
leaned heavily on it.. �Is it the council again?�
�No it�s
not the council,� Tsunade reassured him.
�Then, what!? I�ve got more A and B rank missions under my
belt than any other three senior Chunin I can think of. I�ve got more S-rank jutsu than you and
the pervy-Sennin.�
�I know Naruto,� Tsunade
said. She poured a cup of sake and quaffed it. �I�m on your side, remember? I
doubt there�s a ninja in Konoha that could take you
in a one-on-one fight at the moment.�
�Then why!?�
�Your
application has forced an issue the council has been debating ad nauseam for
years. So � congratulations, sensei,� she delivered the strange comment with
another folder. Inside was a notification that Uzumaki
Naruto had been promoted to Jonin of the village
hidden amongst the leafs. Not only that, but he was being
assigned a team of genin to train.
Naruto
plopped down into the chair behind him, and stared without seeing at the
contents in the folder. Genin.
They�re giving me genin.
What a joke.
�They
denied my promotion for years, why
now?� he pressed.
�Because
they want you close, Naruto. If they let you into ANBU you end up answering
only to me. They lose your visual
everyday presence. It wasn�t until they fully considered allowing Uzumaki Naruto to enter the shadow and leave the light that
they could fully appreciate the repercussions.�
Naruto
closed the folder and tossed it back onto the desk. �And you � you agree with
them!?�
�If
there�s one thing I know about Uzumaki Naruto,� Tsunade said, �is that he wasn�t meant to work in the
shadows. You�re meant to stand in the sun. It�s where you belong. You aren�t
suited to hide behind a mask, Naruto. Too many people rely on you here for
that. You will always be a pillar Naruto, not a foundation. I thought you
understood at least that much already.�
Naruto
scoffed. �What good�s a pillar when he can�t support the woman he loves
properly without fucking it all up? Huh?�
Tsunade sighed, poured another cup of sake and knocked it
back; she wiped her mouth on the back of her sleeve. �You need to move on,
brat.�
�Yeah. So I�ve been told. �Move on�, �cause that�s just real
easy, isn�t it?�
Tsunade slammed her empty cup back onto the desk so hard it
shattered. Naruto startled. �Since when do you only do what�s easy? Since when
do you run from doing what needs to be done, even if it�s hard � even if it
hurts?�
Naruto
stuck his jaw out. �If you do this, I�m going to pull a Kakashi.�
Tsunade laughed. �You haven�t kept up with the Academy
program have you? Ever since Shikamaru disassembled
the program and built up a new one from scratch, there haven�t been any failures. It doesn�t work like
that anymore. No genin graduates from the academy
without being fully tested and approved for mission work. You�re shit outta luck
kid.�
Naruto
swore under his breath and crossed his arms mutinously.
�You
need to stop trying to seclude yourself. Working as a floater with Kiba between
teams isn�t exactly the best situation for you. You need some stability,
something of your own. A genin team will give you
that.
Tsunade shrugged when Naruto remained unconvinced. �Brat,
it worked for Kakashi, didn�t it? He didn�t have
anything left to care about until you three came along � then he became a new
man. A man driven to succeed and protect. He got a
purpose and it fulfilled him in a way he would never have achieved on his own.�
�I
walked into that one,� Naruto muttered after thinking about it. �But if I�m
leaving, what happens to Kiba?�
Tsunade winced. �Well��

believe they passed me over for ANBU

use their nose...kibble breath.�
Choji, on the other side of a seething Kiba, burst out
laughing as Naruto drunkenly dodged Kiba retaliatory fist. �Prick! Someone like you can�t
appreciate my pheromones like the bitches that bend over for me.�
�Kiba
man,� Naruto said in the middle of a fit of snickering himself. �I�ve seen the
bitches that bend over for you, and I don�t want
to appreciate them. What if some of them rub off on me?�
�You son

�NO
FIGHTING!� The bartender called from down the bar, pointing to the huge sign
saying much the same. �I�M WATCHING YOU TWO. IF YOU DESTROY MY BAR ONE MORE

�Oh,
man! But that�s so��
��booooring,� came the near simultaneous moan from both
Naruto and Kiba. Choji just shook his head tiredly,
accustomed to their antics at this stage in his life. The bartender glared and
gestured at the sign once again, presumably for good measure. Naruto waved him
off.
�I�m
surprised he still lets us in after Shika�s eighteenth
birthday bash where you and Lee had a friendly drunken spar on the bar,� Naruto
said, referring to Kiba. �Although maybe �spar� isn�t quite the word I should
use.�
�One-sided drubbing?� Choji
helpfully supplied over the lip of his mug.
�That�s
the word I was looking for!�
�Words.�
�Whatever.
Good times.�
�Uh huh.�
Kiba
growled and knocked them both up the backside of their heads.
�Excuse
me! Your attention, please!� Naruto yelled over the
cacophony of noise as he climbed up onto the bar using his stool. Faces in a various
stages of inebriation stared back at him, some belligerently, some with
interest. �Today! Today is a very important day!
Today, I Uzumaki Naruto, the strongest ninja of Konoha, the current
record holder for longest chase and successful escape from ANBU internal
security at the age of nine, Konoha�s number one
prankster and number one surprising
ninja, former apprentice to the great pervert and author of Icha

�Get to
the fucking point or shut up!� someone yelled. Naruto ignored him.
��the
one and only one-man army! The man who had a bridge named after me in Wave! The destroyer of Akatsuki. The
defender of virtue and chivalry! The man who�s broken the hearts of princess�
all over the globe! The man who will become your future Hokage!� Naruto weathered the increasing shower of
peanut shells with a good-natured smile. �Am finally!

A ragged
cheer went up. More peanut shells rained down. Someone whistled. Someone booed.
Kiba punched someone in the nuts when the bartender was looking the other way. Choji was eating peanuts and supplying ammunition to those
nearby.
�Now you
ask yourselves: Why the FUCK should I care? And I�ll fucking tell you why,
bitches! You should care because Gama-chan needs a
diet!� Naruto said with a flourish of said green frog, his overstuffed wallet.
�And the next round is on me!�
A real
cheer went up this time, and a tide of people surged for the bar.
Sometimes
life was good.

They
sang a song as they stumbled back to Naruto�s apartment. At least, it resembled
the vague construct of a song; they couldn�t really agree on a melody � or the
words � or the rhythm. But since words flowed and clashed and harmonies did
terrible battle between them, it might have been considered a song. Some cats
joined in at some point. Then some dogs started barking. Then windows opened
and other angry and annoyed voices joined in. And the trash bins they crashed
into sounded remarkably like well-timed cymbals.
It
didn�t help that Kiba forgot his right foot back at the bar and was walking
with one left foot and someone else�s other left foot, making them tumble to
the ground more than once in a gangly heap of giggling limbs.
Wet,
dirty, hoarse of voice and smelling like they�d been rolling in a midden heap,
they stumbled into Naruto�s apartment. Kiba usually decided not to return to
the Inuzuka compound after he�d been out drinking. There were too many
possibilities that someone would try to use his state of weakness against him,
and so on these days he usually crashed at Naruto�s place.
Kiba
showered; Naruto made coffee. Naruto showered; Kiba drank lots of coffee. By
the time the digital clock on the wall blinked 1:00 am they were both mostly sober and clean again and lazing at
the kitchen table in a silence as comfortable as Naruto�s old orange jumpsuit.
�I can�t
believe they�re trusting you with genin,�
said Kiba, eventually.
�I can�t
believe they�re trusting me with genin,�
Naruto agreed. �The council will rue the day they made me a �sensei�. I�ll make
orange apparel mandatory at my first team meeting; Sexy-no-jutsu
required learning; I�ll give them lessons on the best places for peeping into
the public baths � no, I�ll teach
them how to infiltrate the bath house�both genders; team building will be done
performing pranks exclusively on stuck-up Hyuga and
council-members once I find out who the fuck voted �aye� when they asked if Uzumaki Naruto should become a Jonin,
and �aye� again when those demented fucks voted to give me a team of genin.�
Kiba was
holding his sides, laughing, by the time Naruto finished his rant. �A team of Naruto-clones, scary man, scary.�
�Ah,
with my luck they�ll give me three of the most stuck up stick-in-the-mud Sasuke clones they can find,� Naruto bemoaned, and glared
when Kiba laughed that much harder. �Stop laughing. This is serious!�
Kiba
wiped moisture from the corner of his eyes with his knuckles. �It is weird to
give you a team. I don�t know how many eighteen year old jonin
get a team of genin to teach.�
�I
guess.�
�Heh�you�ll do fine.�
�I guess� Naruto repeated, very put-upon.
Kiba was
staring at him. Being the recipient of his slit-pupil gaze was always a bit
disconcerting. Kiba always maintained a certain
intensity with everything he did, and his stare, the weight of it, was really
no different.
�What?�
�I need
a favour.�
Naruto
shrugged, �what�s with the formality? If you need something ask.�
�You
remember that time I helped you out with your problem? I need you to return
that favour.�
Naruto froze, coffee cup half-way to his lips. He set it down,
blinked, then frowned. �But I�m fine. I told you. I
haven�t used Kyubi�s chakra since then��
�This
isn�t about you, dickwad.
It�s about me.� Kiba�s gaze didn�t
waver. And it wasn�t just heavy any longer, it was getting heated.
��oh,�
said Naruto, a bit embarrassed that his assumption had been so self-centred.
�Oh!� He scratched the back of his head. �Shit. Uh�there were plenty of girls
at the bar. Why didn�t you ask one of them?�
Kiba�s
nostrils flared. �Because I need to let loose. You
know what it�s like with civilians. And Kunoichi
aren�t much into our sort of sex.�
�Your sort of sex,� Naruto pointed out
with a wary look. �That�s more up your alley than mine, you know? Can�t you get
another Inuzuka?�
�I don�t
want another Inuzuka,� Kiba said. �Besides, I know you haven�t let loose since that day.�
�What?
Are you keeping track or something?�
�Someone
has to.� Kiba shrugged it off. �Why not me? It�s not
like you took Hana up on her offer.�
Naruto
opened his mouth, then closed it and bit his lip. �Kami�you�re
serious aren�t you.�
�I told
you it�s easier to control if you let it out in bits and pieces. Sate it every
once in a while and it�s easier to control in general.�
Rocky
turned soil. Exposed flesh. Claws
spilling blood. Yips, biting, clawing. Training field eighty-six.
The
tremors returned. The hands cupping his coffee cup tightened. The cup
shattered. Naruto jumped up, followed close behind by Kiba as coffee spilt
everywhere. �Shit! Shit. Sorry.� Kiba stepped back as Naruto rushed to mop up
the spill and gather the broken ceramic.
�Naruto��
�I don�t
� I don�t think I have the stomach for something like that again.� Naruto
licked his lips as he tossed the cloth and the broken bits into the trash. �I�m
sorry.�
Kiba
made a frustrated sound in the back of his throat. He stepped up behind Naruto,
who tensed, but all Kiba did was press his height up against him, rest his
hands gently on Naruto�s hips and bury his nose in the corner of Naruto�s neck,
nipping the soft bunch of skin rising from the neck and adjoining his collar.
The sensation shot down his spine and warmed the skin around his tailbone,
breathing hitching.
�Not like
that, idiot. That was pain and pleasure born of anger. This will be a pain and
pleasure born of affection and need. As equals.�
Kiba�s hands slipped forward, one sneaking up under his shirt to caress
Naruto�s stomach, the other tracing the outline of Naruto�s hardening arousal,
obvious at a glance where the ramen-bowl decorated boxers were tenting.

haven�t�since�� Naruto fumbled with words, his tongue stuck on backwards, too
concerned with the novel sensations Kiba was eliciting in his body. Hinata�s soft, scared, face flashed before his eyes. He
shook the vision away angrily.

Naruto pushed

Kiba
didn�t give him time to become self-conscious under the fuel of his gaze. He

Kiba
bent over, resting his hands on the bed, and crashed his lips down, Naruto met
him half-way, claws scrabbling against flesh to engender tantalizing sounds
from the depths of Kiba�s chest�Naruto swallowed them all, and did his level

�Greedy little bitch,� Kiba panted, their breath hot and mingling
between lips swollen and red. He pushed Naruto flat and levered himself up
