Halskr: - The confrontation with the council won’t happen for a while yet but trust me it’s gonna be good! In fact, I think it may surprise you with the way things come about but that’s half the fun. Naruto will play a big role in saving Sasuke *sigh* Love conquers all. ^-^
Msuzumaki: - Yep, Tsunade is defiantly a perv. I think it comes from growing up with Jiraiya lol. Glad you’re enjoying it.
Kyra: - Here you go then hun! ^-^
Here’s Chapter 3 Overcoming Despair.
________________________________________________________________________
A shocked silence filled the room as all eyes focused on the raven. Although they had all known the sentence for any missing nin that was caught, hearing it said out loud somehow made it more real for all of them.
But their shock was nothing in comparison to the despair that flooded through Sasuke. His heart clenched painfully as he fought to control himself so as not to start screaming at them all that he didn’t want to die. It seemed so unfair to him that just as he was reunited with his dobe, he was destined to be separated from him once again. He knew that he had brought it on himself; after all, he was the one who had left claiming that he didn’t care about the consequences. H e lowered his eyes to avoid the intensity of their collective gaze. He refused to show just how scared he was and instead just focused on Tsunade’s shrewd and calculating eyes. He knew that she could see the panic welling up inside of his soul, as could Naruto who was sitting comfortably on his lap as if he had every right to be there. The familiarity of their casual contact reminded the raven of just what he would be missing were the counsel to have their way. Sasuke sighed as he tried to collect his thoughts. He wasn’t really afraid of death, what he was afraid of was leaving this life and going somewhere else without his beautiful kitsune at his side
Naruto shifted his weight upon the Uchiha’s thighs in an unconscious gesture to show his friend that he was there for him. He knew that his dark-haired teme appreciated it but it only seemed to upset him more having someone who understood. The blond decided at that moment that he would do anything, and go through anything, to save Sasuke.
He hated seeing the Uchiha like this. It wasn’t the Sasuke that he knew and it didn’t feel right that he should be the one to comfort the raven when it was always Sasuke who had had that role within their friendship. He was glad that he could finally do something for his most precious person but what he wanted more than anything was to return that cocky, overbearing look to the dark-haired youths eyes.
It didn’t seem fair to Naruto that the raven should have such a sentence hanging over him when the only thing he was guilty of was leaving the village. He hadn’t threatened the safety or well-being of Konoha and had in fact protected them all by killing Orochimaru. The injustice of it all caused his anger to rise as he turned to Tsunade, a tense frown upon his face.
“Baa-chan, how can they justify killing Sasuke after all he’s done? Yes, he left Konoha without permission but everything he’s done since then has been of benefit to us. He killed Orochimaru and one of the Akatsuki so shouldn’t that count for something, tebayo?”
Sasuke studied the blond closely. It seemed that Naruto would be willing to argue with the devil himself to try and free him but the raven couldn’t help but think that it was pointless.
Tsunade sighed as she saw the familiar determination in the young kitsune’s eyes.
“Gaki, he may have done that but he did it for himself not for Konoha-” Sasuke felt his anger rise at those words. Despite the fact that their was some truth to those words, he didn’t like the way she just casually spoke of his shortcomings like that. He was about to tell her so but Naruto’s angry exclamation as the blond propelled himself off of his lap to stand his ground before their Hokage, his entire body shaking with frustration.
“Why the hell does it matter why he did it?! The fact is he did and it directly benefited Konoha! Besides, how can you say that he didn’t do it for us as well as for himself tebayo?” A vein twitched in Tsunade’s temple as she fought to keep her own anger down.
“Look Naruto. It’s not me who decides his fate so don’t go yelling all your self-righteous crap at me! Nothing you say to me is gonna help because I have no power in this situation, it’s the counsel you are gonna have to convince. Besides that, they’re just going to say that he’s guilty of trying to kill you because, in case you’ve forgotten, he tried to do so many times!” Almost immediately she regretted her words as pain flashed brightly within the Uchiha’s eyes and Naruto’s glare became heated as his angry shaking stilled.
“He may have tried to kill me but that is between me and Sasuke,” he stated, voice calm, “no one else has any right to comment on it ’cos it doesn’t involve them. I’ve forgiven him, we’ve moved on, end of story.”
Everyone’s attention was focused on the blond who’s calm voice belied the incredible anger boiling inside of him. They all knew it was far more formidable to be faced with a calm, self-controlled Naruto than one shouting in outright fury.
Tsunade wasn’t surprised by Naruto’s reaction but it didn’t help matters at all. The counsellor’s of Konoha were hardly her favourite people and they barely tolerated her. They managed to get to her even more by refusing to acknowledge Naruto’s humanity, instead playing to the villagers fear of him by continuing to single him out of the crowd. Because of this, it would be difficult for Naruto to convince them to spare the Uchiha, even with his steely determination. Instead, they were content to cause him suffering, especially if that would also cause her pain through him.
“Naruto, even if you say that you know what the counsel are like better than anyone. If you insist upon opposing them, you are gonna have a big fight on your hands. As we speak they are meeting to discuss the Uchiha and all that he has done since he left. After that, they will decide his fate.” She regarded him closely as he snorted lightly while crossing his arms, a pout gracing his face.
“Yeah right. They’ll talk all they want yet we all know it’s only formality. They’ll have already decided Sasuke’s sentence by now and I refuse to let that happen.” His eyes took on a warrior gleam as he fixed them on his Baa-chan. “I will fight until the very end to free Sasuke. After all, I made a promise.”
Sasuke couldn’t believe his ears. Naruto was willing to go up against Konoha itself to protect him? It didn’t make any sense to him. If Naruto’s dream was to become the Hokage then inciting the counsel to turn even more against him was not a wise move, not to mention what they could do to him using the Kyuubi as justification.
“Oi Naruto! Don’t be so hasty. Calm down.” The blond spun to face him, the angry frown still marring his handsome features. “Promise me, Naruto. Promise that you won’t do anything to turn the counsel against you. They have the power to make your life even more difficult than it already is and I’m not worth that.” Suddenly, Sasuke found himself on his back with a very angry Naruto on top of him. The pale boy hadn’t even seen his friend move. Granted, his guard was down, but that didn’t explain how the blond had moved so fast that even the Sharingan hadn’t seen him. It only took one look into Naruto’s eyes for the raven to understand the reason why. The usually sky-blue eyes had changed to blood red with slits for pupils; a sign that the blond’s anger was so great that the Kyuubi’s power had been stirred. The whisker-like marks upon tanned cheeks had become darker and his k9’s had elongated into deadly looking fangs. The overall effect was quite terrifying, as was the malignant chakra pulsating beneath the tanned skin. The look in the demon eyes that watched him clearly said that he should shut the hell up ’cos he was pissing the Kyuubi-container off. His suspicions were confirmed when the blond let out an audible growl before hissing,
“Sasuke, how can you say that to me after I spent so long chasing you? After I trained for so long and endured so much just to get stronger so that I could get closer to you, you’re saying I should just give up at the first sign of trouble? Well fuck you Uchiha! I refuse to let it all be for nothing! I promised Sakura, I promised myself and, I promised you even if you didn’t know it. I said that I would save you and bring you home and I meant it so shut the hell up and watch Teme! I’ll find a way to save you, even if I have to bring the counsel down, so be it. I’m gonna keep my promise!” With a last animalistic growl, he sprang towards the open doorway and was gone before Sasuke could draw breath.
Everyone in the room was frozen in shock though a cleared throat from Tsunade quickly broke the tension. She regarded the raven with something close to amusement shinning in her eyes.
“He always did have a quick temper but really Uchiha you know how to push his buttons.” She shook her head before turning to the others. “Well, I’d better get back to work. Shikamaru, Lee, I’m placing you two on first watch. Not that it’s really necessary as I don’t think he’s going anywhere,” she paused before turning to the pale youth, “are you, Uchiha?”
Sasuke was still a little in shock from Naruto’s outburst but he registered her question with a wry grin. It was true that he wasn’t going anywhere; where would he go if he were to leave? All that was left in the world that was precious to him was right here in Konoha. He shook his head in agreement before turning his gaze out of the window. He heard the others leaving with words of farewell that may have been permanent but he barely recognised them. All of his attention was on the small flame inside him that his dobe had ignited. Maybe, just maybe, that baka really would find a way.
Naruto sped over the streets, anger fuelling his movements until he was a mere blur across the rooftops. The demon red of his eyes bled away back to their usual blue as he calmed himself and, seeking comfort, he headed for Hokage Mountain. Landing lightly, he turned to gaze at the village without really seeing as his thoughts turned towards the predicament that his friend faced.
He knew that, when it came to the counsel, he was powerless to save Sasuke. As much as he had wanted the raven home, it was not so that he would return to a death sentence. He realised now that he really should have thought things through before simply throwing the Uchiha over his shoulder and returning to Konoha. Now, he might have to face a reality where Sasuke was no longer present.
Tears welled up and spilled over at the thought of a life without him. It was true that Sasuke hadn’t been around for years but at least the blond had known that he was alive somewhere so the chance of meeting him again was still an option. However, if the counsel had their way, the dark-haired boy whom he loved more than anything would be lost to him forever.
Despair dripped like a vice at the young blond and pain stabbed like a physical wound within his chest. Gasping for breath, he fell to his knees, hands clenched around his body as quivers shook him and tears flooded his face and neck. The air seemed thick and wouldn’t pass his lips as his head swam, threatening darkness.
Just then, the raven’s face flashed through his mind, clearing the despair away and easing the pain. It was still there but it was a dull ache now and bearable though he knew it would not disappear completely until his teme was freed. ‘Panicking won’t solve anything,’ the blond thought, ‘I can’t fall to pieces now. I have to be strong and find a way to save him.’ Shaking his head to rid himself of the last few tears that clung stubbornly to his cheeks, he turned his head in the direction of the Hokage’s office. The thought of his Baa-chan possibly knowing something that could help him, had his feet moving in that direction before his mind had even caught up. Landing on the windowsill, he peered through to find Tsunade sitting at her desk as he had expected. He slid the window open silently and slipped inside but froze at the sound of her voice.
“I knew you come here ventually. So, wha is it that you fink I can do for you? Wha magical solution do you fink I hav, gaki?” Her voice was slurred as she twirled her chair round to face him, sake bottle swinging from her limp hand. Naruto stared in grim shock. Tsunade was no novice at drinking so it took quite a lot to get her to the point were she was slurring her words like that and he hated to think how much she had had. Anger quickly replaced shock as he strode forward and snatched the sake bottle from her hand before banging it on the desk. He watched as her eyes tried to focus on him.
“You’re drunk.” he practically snarled. He couldn’t help the anger that he felt. More and more often since Jiriaya had died, he found her in a drunken stupor, muttering about how she was losing everyone that she cared about. He had understood that the drinking was a way for her to deal with the pain so he had allowed her to indulge in her self-pity for a while but, eventually, he had had enough of it. She was the Hokage after all; they all needed her to be strong.
Naruto understood her pain, his own grief at the loss of his perverted mentor cut deep but he knew that Ero-sennin would have wanted him to carry on. To keep training and get stronger so that he could beat those who threatened him and Konoha.
After a few weeks of his Hokage getting so blindingly drunk that she often forgot where she was, he had sat her down and spoken a few choice words to her. Actually, he had just shouted at her until she’d listened but it had resulted in her promising to cut down.
Yet here he was again, faced with a leader who was so drunk she was currently trying to pet a Naruto who didn’t exist, three inches to the left of the real one. His anger drained away as he sighed softly. He almost pitied her but he loved her more.
He grabbed the hand still waving listlessly in the air beside him and brought it up to cup around his whiskered cheek. Again, he felt tears try to push their way through but he held them back. If Tsunade couldn’t be strong, then he would have to be strong for the both of them.
Carefully, he placed his arms around her waist and pulled her from the chair. She automatically placed her arms around his neck to secure herself before muttering “My Gaki” and falling asleep. Naruto felt a sad smile tug at his lips as he hoisted her into his arms before setting off for her apartment, cradling the woman he thought of as a mother close to his bleeding heart.
