Few would
believe that Konoha’s Green Beast could be subtle. He could. When required.
Usually Gai found it tedious.
Which was
why he was sitting in his living room at four o’clock in the morning with Kakashi.
Subtlety.
“Since you went
to the effort of accosting me on my way home, perhaps you could get to the
point?”
“My Eternal
Rival! I have a Simple Favor to ask of you!”
“Nothing is
‘simple’ with you, Gai. Get to it, my bed awaits.”
Gai paused.
For dramatic effect. His Hip and Modern Rival was so Cool and Aloof even in the
Dead of the Night…
Gai
shoulders dropped. He hated talking to Kakashi about this stuff.
The other
man was fiercely protective of his partner, and Gai admitted that he never
really understood the attraction of their activities.
Kakashi was the one person in the village who seemed to actually get Gai. It hurt Gai that he didn’t seem
to get Kakashi in the same way.
Lee was an
amazing student, but still his student, and Gai could not bring himself to
speak to Lee or Neji, or shudder, Tenten
about the topics he discussed with Kakashi.
Kakashi was
one of his Precious People, his Closest Friend as well as his Eternal
Rival.
And
sometimes, Gai needed someone to talk to.
“My Beloved
and Wondrous Student is in need of Manly and Genuine Guidance with Matters…”
Gai paused. He’d never been able to find a way to describe Kakashi’s tastes.
“Matters of
the Flesh which you are much more suited to assist, however, My Glorious and
Beloved Student would be Distressed to speak to you of such things, so I have
taken it upon myself to acquire the Precious Information on his behalf.”
Kakashi
yawned as Gai finished his sentence with a ‘good guy pose’, complete with
sunset background. He smirked. “Awww Gai, little Lee’s all grown up and
becoming a pervert.”
Gai was
horrified. His precious Lee-Kun, a pervert? How did Kakashi know this?
“Lee-Kun a
pervert? Surely this cannot be!” bellowed Gai, confused at the turn of the
conversation.
“Gai, you just asked me to open up my porn
collection for your student, of courses he’s a pervert.”
His Genius
Rival was once again well in front of Gai in the conversation. Gai wondered if
he shouldn’t start writing these things down before attempting to speak to
Kakashi. Talking to the man was like reading random fortune cookies sayings one
after the other.
“Kakashi,
my Cool and Hip Rival, it is not Lee-Kun in Need of Guidance.”
Kakashi
paused. What other student’s did Gai have? There was Baby–Gai, Panda Girl and
the Hyuug-
His eyes
bugged nearly out of their sockets. “ HYUUGA NEJI???” Kakashi shook his head.
“Honestly, Lee, I could see as a pervert, but Neji?”
Gai
smirked. “Not so odd when you take his uncle into account.”
“Hiashi?”
Kakashi laughed. “I wonder if Neji knows what his Uncle gets up to at those
‘all night meetings’?”
Gai shook
his head. “No, Neji has no idea. No one
in the Hyuuga clan really knows. It’s the deal Hiashi made when he became head
of the Clan.”
“Ouch. Head
of the Hyuuga Clan. Better him than me.” Kakashi stretched, yawning this time
for real. “Much as I love to gossip with you Gai, get to the point.”
“I promised Neji some reading material,” replied Gai, hoping to get to the
point and have the conversation done with. The normally energetic man more
somber as the conversation progressed.
Kakashi
smiled kindly under his mask. “Worried about Neji?”
Gai was
uncharacteristically quiet. The paused stretch. Kakashi was tempted to fidget,
but controlled himself. Such things would often lead to a challenge, and in his
current mood, Gai was likely to take any excuse to change the subject.
“Gai?”
The large
man sighed. “He’s quite sheltered. He would deny it, but he’s not been exposed
to a lot outside the Hyuuga authorized world view.”
Kakashi nodded.
“It’s not unusual for people from large clans to be like that.”
“I fear for
his heart, Kakashi. Such relationships are not entered into lightly.”
“True. But
everyone had to learn somehow, or sometime. Waiting until he’s older won’t make
it any easier for him.”
Both men
fell silent, contemplating their thoughts.
“Gai”
“Yes, My
Rival.”
“It’s not
when. It’s who.” Kakashi’s masks was smooth across his features, a sign that
Gai had learned meant he was being serious. “Until I meet Iruka, I was still
playing. It’s more important that Neji finds someone he can trust. His age will
be irrelevant if it’s someone he can trust.” His single visible eye closed.
“Please, tell me it’s not Sasuke.”
Gai
laughed. “No, My Rival, it is not a member of your team.”
Kakashi’s
eye opened, then bent into a bow/smile. “Oh. Good.” He breathed a sigh of
relief. “There’s a conversation I never want to have with my team.”
“I don’t
know. I suspect that Sai-Kun may be asking you something about it someday,”
said Gai, smirking.
Kakashi’s
hair flopped forward over his arms. He rubbed his face across his arms
sleepily, wondering if his lover was warm and in bed right now, waiting for his
return.
He stood
up, graceful in a way that Gai could never achieve.
“I’ll bring
the books around tomorrow.” Kakashi paused at the window. “Gai, get some sleep.
You’re obviously tired, you haven’t mentioned youth once.”
Gai sighed.
“Sometimes, my Eternal Rival, even the Green Beast gets tired.”
A flutter
of wind signaled Kakashi’s departure. Not for the first time, Gai wondered what
it would be like to have someone other than his students to return to.
The books
were informative. People in positions of
authority often feel responsible for everything, and this can lead them to seek
out a situation where they are forced to take a position of less authority.
So, thought Neji, Shikamaru
is stressed out about being War Leader, and is constantly worried about
screwing up. That’s not new. Almost every Jounin in the village knew that
Shikamaru was concerned about getting others killed.
Naruto was
not a Jounin, and therefore continued to be blissfully unaware of the effect
the new role had had on his friend.
Submissive. At least Neji had a name for it now.
“Neji,”
said Shikamaru.
Neji raised
a stoic eye brow.
“Can I do
something for you?” asked the Nara.
You could get on your knees…
Quiet you, thought Neji, trying to reign his
wandering thoughts. The Nara had this effect on him of late.
“No. I’m
here to collect Hinabi.”
“You? Doesn’t
your Aunt normally do that?” Shikamaru looked concerned.
“She was
detained,” replied Neji.
Shikamaru
smirked. “Did Hinabi spike her tea again?
Neji smiled
slightly, Hyuuga mask slipping briefly. “No, that was Hinata’s trick.”
Shikamaru
chuckled. “You three were terrors. Quite, reserved terrors, but terrors none
the less.” Shikamaru caught his eye. “My mother would have tanned my hide.”
Now Neji
did smile. “Who said ours weren’t?”
The Nara chuckled again. “You’ve been around
the village a bit of late, taking a break from missions?”
“No,”
replied Neji. “I’ve just been… more active in the village of late.”
“Well,
that’s…good.” Shikamaru smiled again. “See you around.”
The first
time, it was an accident.
Neji had
spotted Shikamaru walking down the stairs of the Hokage’s Tower as he’d left
the mission room. Granted, he been in the mission room for sometime that day,
catching up on the gossip from the other Jounin, and gathering information on
Genma. The man was a traitor in the making, Neji was sure of it.
The Nara paused at the bottom of the stairs
to light up his cigarette. The scene was so similar to that night, it made Neji
pause. Is it a ritual, perhaps?
Shikamaru
looked at the heavens as he drew the first puff on his cigarette. The younger
Shinobi seemed pensive for a moment, and then shook himself. One hand made its
way into the Nara’s pocket, posture bending oddly to accommodate the
slouch in his walk.
Neji
followed him home and took up watch on the roof across the street. Shikamaru
opened his door as normal and entered his apartment. Neji continued to watch
with the aid of his Byakugan.
Nothing
unusual happened. Shikamaru went to bed without a shower.
Neji was
not disappointed by this. He was not.
“Neji,”
greeted Shikamaru. “I hear you’ve been looking for me?”
Neji
flicked his eyes to the other man. “No. You must be mistaken.”
The Nara raised a brow. “My mistake. Iruka
was sure you’d been asking after me when you came to collect Hinabi.”
Neji raised
his own brows. “I was merely curious as to why you weren’t in class.”
“I only
teach one day a week. Anything more is too troublesome. Pre-Genins are always
bouncing around and making loud noises.”
I could take you somewhere quiet, thinks Neji, distracted by the smile
playing across the Nara’s handsome face.
“Hopefully
Hinabi is not too ‘troublesome’.”
“She’s not
in my class, usually.” Shikamaru hefted the courier bag full of scrolls on his
shoulder. “Anyway, I need to deliver this to the Hokage. Bye Neji.”
“Good Bye.”
Neji
surreptitiously checked for anyone watching. The coast was clear. Neji turned
to see Shikamaru casually strolling to the Hokage Tower. Activating his Byakugan would be too noticeable in the
village. It might raise an unwarranted alarm.
Neji gave
himself 6 seconds to view Shikamaru’s ass. Then he continued on his way.
Next time you should pinch it, taunted his wayward thoughts
Shut up.
It took
Neji a total of a week to read though all the books. They were informative, but
didn’t give any advice on how to address the problem with Genma and Shikamaru.
Even more
concerning, Neji just seemed to keep… running into Shikamaru. Over the last
week, the two had crossed paths all over the village.
The Shadow
User had noticed it too, and seemed increasingly short tempered with him.
The second
time, it was fate.
Neji was
minding his own business, walking down the street, when he saw Genma enter
Shikamaru’s apartment building. Since he knew it was not Genma’s building, he
followed he older nin.
Genma went
to Shikamaru’s door and slipped a piece of twine around the door handle.
Clever, thought Neji. When Shikamaru opens the door, his hand covers the signal, leaving no
discernable code or message to an observer.
Neji hid in
the stairwell until Genma left. He removed the twine from the door handle.
Later that
night, Neji waited on the roof of the opposite building for Shikamaru to arrive
home. Genma was in the alleyway. Shikamaru opened his door without pause.
Genma
waited about 15 minutes before he left the alleyway.
The books
have been quite informative, but they’re not without their problems.
Neji found
reading them… disturbing, but not in the manner he expected. His morning
showers are plagued with images of Shikamaru thrusting his fingers into his
mouth while stroking his cock.
Having the
books has only made these early morning showers all the more difficult. Neji is
forced to switch to cold showers. Or wake up before the rest of the compound.
“Hey,
NEJI!” shouted Naruto, “Come over here and sit with us!”
Neji
smiled. Naruto was the only person in the village who seemed genuinely happy
when he saw Neji. The only one to invite Neji out - admittedly, for Ramen, but
still -Naruto made it clear that he liked Neji’s company.
Ok, Lee did
it too, but that was different. Lee did that with everyone.
Ok, so did
Naruto. It was nice to be invited out by his friend. It was nice to have
someone who wanted to spend time with Neji because he was Neji, not because he
was a Jounin, or a Hyuuga.
Naruto
didn’t care about his rank or his clan. The Kyuubi vessel cared far more about
the Ramen than he did about your clan or rank.
Neji
entered Ichiraku, pleased that he would be able to spend some time with his
hyperactive, knuckle-head friend. As much as the blond could drive him crazy with
his wild statements and careless attitude, he made Neji feel welcome whenever
they spent time together.
“Hyuuga,”
drawled Naruto’s companion, “long time no see.”
Neji was
shocked still. Shikamaru.
Duh, supplied his conscience, which had
been rather talkative as of late, the
blond one did yell ‘join us’.
Shut the fuck up, he yelled back in the privacy of his
own mind. Neji had accepted that he was going mad a few days ago, when his cold
showers were still not getting rid of his morning ‘glory’.
The source
of his distress sat quietly on the stool, slumped forward onto the counter top,
head resting on the palm of his hand as the leisurely stirred the Ramen with
his chop sticks.
Neji’s eyes
feasted on the other man. He looked much better in normal vision. The Byakugan lacked a certain depth
perception, and, annoyingly, colour. Neji had spent too many cold showers
wondering whether the Nara’s cheeks had been a delightful shade of pink when
the younger sucked a cock into his mouth, or if the curve of his jaw would fit
into Neji’s palm. Of if that was his imagination.
His very,
very active imagination that had been operating on overdrive for the last three
weeks.
“NEJI!”
roared Naruto, completely failing to use his ‘inside voice’, “you’ve been too
busy of late!”
Neji was
glad he was a Hyuuga. Having no pupils meant that people couldn’t tell where
your eyes were directed. As long as his head was pointed forward, people
assumed he was looking forward and not, say, staring at the Shikamaru as the
chopstick brought their bounty to the younger man’s mouth.
Mouth, supplied his wayward thoughts, Mouth around things.
“I’ve been
out of the village a lot as of late, yes.” Neji replied, pretending for all his
worth that he was looking at Naruto, and not fascinated by the noodle being
sucked into Shikamaru’s mouth.
Shikamaru
looked up from his meal. His right eyebrow made a lazy arch as he sucked the
last of the noodle into his mouth. “Really? That’s interesting; I’ve seen you
around quite a bit.”
Naruto
looked from one friend to the other, confused by the interchange.
Neji kept
his head facing forward and his expression blank. His eyes drifted down to the Nara’s crotch, drawn to the pleasant
bulge between the Nara’s sprawled legs.
Shikamaru’s
brow furrowed, following the slight peek in the Neji’s eye with his own. His
head bounced up, stunned. An angry flush coloured the younger man’s
cheeks.
“Take a
picture, Hyuuga, it’ll last longer.”
Neji
stiffened.
At least you know what he looks like
with flushed cheeks.
“Naruto-Kun,
Shikamaru-San. A pleasure to see you.” He nodded his head slightly.
“Unfortunately, I am late for another engagement. Enjoy your meal.”
Neji fled
the scene, again.
Damn it. Maybe I should just give up
and masturbate.
“Hyuuga,” Shikamaru snapped when they saw each
other in the mission room. “Fancy seeing you here. Or the Market. Or the
Onsen.” The lazy brow rose. “Idle curiosity again? Or did some thing take your
fancy?”
Neji’s
heart stopped. Is he flirting? The
Hyuuga smirked. He was a handsome man. It’s not surprising that the Nara had taken an interest in him. Maybe
the incident at the Ramen Stand had piqued his interest?
Neji
started to get lost in dreamy thoughts, but the Nara continued - “Because if it did,
then too damn bad, Hyuuga. My back pocket is for my wallet, not nosy Jounin who
think they own the place.”
With that,
Shikamaru stalked away.
Neji head
jolted as he was thrown from his daydream of Shikamaru sliding into his lap.
What?
Really, the
Nara was being a brat. It’s not like Neji
was following him. He was a Shinobi of the Leaf just like the Nara. They were bound to run into each
other over the course of a normal week.
And you didn’t think that he’d be
here at all, did ya, Hyuuga? teased his conscience.
No, Neji
had just come in to hand in his report. That was all.
Sure.
One of the
reasons Hyuuga were so damn uptight was the reality of being a member of a clan
populated with others, who, like yourself, could see through walls.
It was
common for Hyuuga clan members to train in the compound, and this one simple
practice was the bane of every young Hyuuga male’s life.
Anyone with
a Byakugan, from Hiashi to Hinabi,
could ‘accidentally’ see through the walls, and for maturing males, it was a
constant source of irritation.
In general,
the first few forays into self pleasuring would leave a young person believing
that their parents and/or whole family would see, or somehow know, what they
had been up too.
With the
Hyuuga, they damn well could see, and they did know. Any odd noise in the
compound was a license for other clan member to activate their ‘gifts’ and
months of embarrassment followed any young Hyuuga from the attempt to do so
outside of ‘sanctioned’ times.
In unspoken
agreement was that Hyuuga males could… engage in such acts the shower, but only
if it was in the morning, and then only if none of the children were awake.
Neji
himself had blushed for a whole week after accidentally seeing an older cousin
‘in the shower’. It was the same cousin that had taken the prodigy aside at the
tender age of twelve and explained a few simple rules for ‘self pleasure’ as
practiced in the Hyuuga clan.
First,
avoid it at all costs. You do not want Hinata-Sama running up to Hyuuga-Sama
and asking her daddy what you were doing and why you had an odd growth between
your legs. And yes, this had happened. At least, that’s what his cousin had
told him happened when Hinata had caught one of the younger uncles out.
It was the
family’s pet theory on why the poor girl couldn’t look at a man without blushing.
Secondly,
if there was a pressing need to … address such needs, then one should attempt
to do so as far away from other Hyuuga as possible.
Which
translated to a lot of Hyuuga men taking solo missions out of the village for a
few days. Once the mission was complete,
you were free to spend the night in a local inn, which was pretty much the
Hyuuga equivalent of a self-love
motel.
Gai, in his
somewhat unexplained understanding of the Hyuuga clan, had paid for his
students to have their own rooms as often as possible when on missions. For
that, Neji was eternally grateful.
After his
adventure with Shikamaru in the mission room, Neji took the first solo mission
out of the village.
(A/N -This
is the first fic I’ve written that has started with a full outline of the story
I wanted to write. It’s also the first I’ve written in scene, piece by piece,
and not necessarily in order. Normally I’d write each section as one stint,
then go back and edit it.
This time,
I’m jumping ahead to the next chapters and writing as things strike me, and
while I’m not sure if it’s improving the results, it is changing how I write.
The results is a much more strategically laid plot, and, oddly, freeing me up
to just write, and not think about
anything else.
I feel like
I’m improving as a writer, which makes me happy, because all of my fic is
experiments, baby steps into a world I want to become a part of, but an not sure if I could cut it.
Like a
wobbly toddler, I’m shifting from one poorly balance
foot to the other. This feels like the second step on this road, and I’m
incredibly happy with myself for not falling over.)
