Chapter 3
The next morning Naruto woke to his alarm clock dancing across his nightstand, which sounded louder than usual. He groaned a little as he wrapped his pillow, like a tortilla, around his head in an attempt to shut the inhumane noise out; however after another 30 seconds of still hearing the sound he finally got up to turn it off, flinching from the pain coming from the left side of his head. “Stupid alarm, stupid Gaara, stupid Granny.” The blond mumbled to himself as he rubbed his bruised spot on his head, the lump on them back of his head brought back the memories from last night.
**********Flashback************
“Bye bye Teme.” Naruto grinned and gave Sasuke a small wave as he and Gaara glided over to the other side where Shikamaru was waiting.
When they reached their destination, Gaara helped Naruto on to the roof and received the same help from the blond. Well on to the roof, Gaara made a fist and whacked Naruto in the back head.
“What the FUCK GAARA?!” Naruto yelled at the red head.
“For being stupid.” He replied.
“Stupid?!?!? What the hell, there was no other choice!” The blond growled at him, still keeping his hand on the spot where Gaara had punched him, it hurt like hell.
“Like hell it wasn’t, how about me helping you take him down, then leave?” Gaara growled back holding up his fist.
“That would have taken too long, we would have been discovered. Better to have one after us than the whole security and police department chasing us around the city.” Naruto said waving his hands around like a possessed bird.
“As entertaining as this is, I suggest we leave before we actually do get in trouble.” Shikamaru interrupted the two. Both Gaara and Naruto turned their heads towards the brunette, who had already packed his stuff.
“Yeah …” Gaara said as he walked passed Naruto and followed Shikamaru, who had already begun walking to the ladder on the opposite end of the roof.
“Oi we aren’t done yet Gaara. Just wait until we get home I’ll go fucking ape on your ass, you hear!” Naruto half yelled after the red head, the growling had turned from just that to a playful half serious shout. Naruto and Gaara always sparred together but recently there had not been much time for it in between jobs and coaching archery.
“You’re on blondie.” Gaara answered.
They had manage to get away safely, as they drove back they had spotted a couple of patrol cars heading in the direction of the Uchiha Corp. Naruto laughed a little and stated that they had it coming.
Shikamaru pulled up to the temple they called home and parked the car in its usual spot and got out. A woman dressed in a *samue in a light brown colour was waiting for them on the porch as they arrived.
“Tsunade wants to see all of you.” The woman said before turning, walking in the direction of Tsunade’s office/room, expecting the three boys to follow them. Both Gaara and Shikamaru looked at Naruto, who grinned nervously and scratched the back of his head, it was never a good thing when Tsunade wanted to see the three of them after a mission. It meant that someone was going to get an earful from the big breasted woman and that someone was Naruto 99% of the time, followed by a lecture to Shikamaru and Gaara for not keeping the blond under close supervision.
“Tsunade-san the boys are back.” Shizune called when they reached the office/room’s door.
“Send them in.” A female voice responded. Shizune turned to the boys who all swallowed hard as she opened the door and motioned with her hand they could enter. The three boys entered the room and walked all the way up to the desk, where Tsunade was sitting watching the news on the tellie.
After a couple of minutes Tsunade turned the tellie off and turned to the three boys, she did not look pleased. Again, there was an uncomfortable silence in the room for another minute before a book came flying hitting Naruto in the same spot as Gaara had hit him earlier.
“WHAT THE FUCK ?!?!….” Naruto yelled crouching down holding onto his bruised spot.
“That’s for being stupid.”
“What the hell … why do you always assume it is me Granny?!” Naruto rubbed his head trying to soothe the pain.
“Cause every time something goes wrong, 99% of the time you’re the cause of it and don’t call me Granny, brat.” She half growled to the blond. “And you two ...” She looked at Shikamaru and Gaara who both pointed at Naruto “ Nevermind. More importantly how many saw you?” Naruto stood up again regaining his posture.
“One.” he answered.
“Who?” She asked.
“Uchiha Sasuke.” Gaara replied before Naruto got a chance to answer. Tsunade rubbed her temples.
“Okay ...” She held out her hand indicating to who ever was holding the info to give it to her. Naruto dug in to his pocket and pulled out the USB drive and gave it to her. “ … Naruto you lay low for the next couple of weeks and I mean lay low. So no more jobs for you for the next couple of weeks, not until things have died down. Lets hope the Uchiha kid doesn’t help the police put out a broadcast for your ass. You’re dismissed.”
“But Granny ...” Naruto whined not following Gaara and Shikamaru who were walking towards the door.
“I said dismissed, I am not changing my mind brat so stop whining. It wouldn’t do any of us any good if you get caught.” The last part she had said with a soft but concerned voice.
“Fine” Naruto huffed before following the two other back to their rooms.
****************End Flashback*****************
Naruto got out of the shower and dried himself before walking back to his room with the towel around his waist. Back in his room, he roamed around in his closet and drawers finding himself a new set of underwear, socks and clothes to wear for the day. After he got dressed, he went to the kitchen finding Gaara washing up his plate.
“Morning Gaara.” He announced.
“Morning.” The red head responded before rinsing the plate of soap and placing it on the side of the sink to dry.
“Where is Shikamaru?” Naruto asked as he sat down, pouring himself a glass of juice.
“He already left for the bookstore.” Gaara replied. “You on the early shift today?”
“Yeah, got archery training at 4 today. You helping Chiyo-san again?” Naruto answered with his mouth full of scrambled egg.
“Yes and don’t talk with your mouth full.” The red head said giving Naruto a light pat on the head before leaving him alone in the kitchen.
**********************************************************
“Morning Sasuke, Neji!” The girls squealed as Sasuke and Neji arrived at the university. Both boys ignored the crowd and walked straight into the lecture theatre where their lecture was being held, the whole way the other students had whispered amongst themselves about last night’s incident.
Sasuke rubbed his temples as he and Neji left after the last lecture of the day, the whole day had been filled with annoying girls with sympathy and questions about last night’s incident, followed by annoying stares and whispers from people who didn’t dare to ask the Uchiha any questions.
“Headache?” Neji asked.
“Yeah, people are being so fucking annoying.” Sasuke replied.
“Hehe, what do you expect? Its not everyday someone breaks in to Uchiha Corp.” Neji chuckled.
“Hn.”
“Well I shall take my leave, apparently I am to meet my future wife today.” The long haired boy said.
“They’ve finally decided, huh?” The raven responded.
“Indeed, call you later tonight for an update.” Neji said patting Sasuke gently on the shoulder before leaving him in the hallway. Sasuke looked at his watch, 1.45 pm. They had been let out of the class 15 minutes earlier than usual, his driver would not arrive until two so the raven decided that he to pick up the book he had ordered from the campus bookstore.
As he entered the bookstore he headed straight for the counter where the young woman, he had spoken to 4 days ago when he had ordered his book, was working.
“Excuse me I’m here to pick up my book.” The young woman turned to him and blushed. Sasuke rolled his eyes.
“One moment Uchiha-san.” She replied quickly looking up on the computer to see if the order was in. “I am sorry Uchiha-san it has not arrived yet.”
“What you mean it hasn’t arrived yet, you clearly said 3 days and now its been 4.”
“I- I am s-sorry the print house was out of stock so they needed to print a new one for you.” The woman didn’t meet his eyes. It was clear the Uchiha was annoyed.
“Great.” He mumbled, just what he needed. “Well how long would that take?”
“A week.”
“A week?!? What the hell do they print 10 pages a day or what?” Sasuke was getting even more annoyed, he needed the book now so he could get his essay on consumerism out of the way.
“I-I am s-sorry Uchiha-san, however this bookstore might have it in stock.” She began writing an address down on a piece of paper.
“Thanks for nothing, cancel my order.” The raven said coldly before he left, the woman flinched a little before nodding trying to hold back her tears.
Sasuke looked at the piece of paper as he walked out to where his driver was waiting for him, he noticed that the address was on the other side of the city. The part of the city he had never been, mainly because it was the poor part of the city and he had no reason to go.
“Afternoon Uchiha-sama. I hope you had a pleasant day at the university.” The driver greeted.
“Hn.” Sasuke handed him the paper. “Take me there.” The driver looked at the note for a second before looking up at Sasuke.
“Are you sure Uchiha-sama?” The driver looked a bit worried.
“Just take me there.” Sasuke said in an annoyed voice and seated himself in the car.
************************************
Naruto sat on the chair behind the counter, balancing it on two legs as he was leaned against the wall reading a book, Shikamaru and Gaara had both warned him that he might fall but he never listened. There had not been a single customer in the shop for 2 hours and Naruto was bored to say the least, the book he read was not proving to be interesting or entertaining. He glanced over at the clock on the wall again, much to his dismay it had only moved from 2.15 PM to 2.30 PM. Naruto sighed before returning his attention back to the book, revolving around physics and its laws.
‘Ding’, the bell on the door moved as the door was pushed open.
“Welcome.” Naruto looked up smiling his usual customer smile, but it quickly faded as he stared right into two very familiar eyes.
“So even thieves have honest jobs, dobe.” Sasuke said staring into the same blue eyes that had momentarily stolen his breath last night, they still held the same beautiful colour.
“Oi, who you calling dobe, teme?” Naruto half growled at the raven haired boy.
“You, obviously since there isn’t anyone else but you in the room.” Sasuke walked up to the counter where Naruto stood.
“I must say though didn’t think an Uchiha would personally come and take me in after last night’s job.” Naruto said. “I thought you would have had your goons do that for you, so you wouldn’t have to dirty your precious hands”
“Don’t flatter yourself dobe, you may be a thief but not one worth an Uchiha’s time. Though you are right we have goons for a job like that if needed.” Sasuke replied. “Besides, dad said you didn’t steal anything”
“And you believe him?” Naruto asked, his body was tense, he didn’t trust the Uchiha, yet he couldn’t help himself from being drawn to the other boy, it was the same feeling he had, when he first saw Sasuke.
“Well, no because my instincts tells me otherwise, but I am not here to interrogate you … yet.”He replied never taking his eyes off Naruto, even if he had wanted to he wasn’t sure if he would have been able to. There was something about this boy that awakened something in Sasuke, something he could not place.
“Then why are you here? I doubt its for a stroll in the park, incase you haven’t noticed this is the poor part of town.” The blond asked.
“I’m here for a book, the bookstore at my campus was not competent enough to get my order in on time.” Sasuke said taking out a piece of paper which had the title of the book written on it, and handing it to Naruto. Naturo looked, scanned the paper and nodded.
“Yeah we have that book.” Naruto moved from where he was standing indicating with his hand for Sasuke to follow as he disappeared behind some bookshelves. Sasuke followed the blond looking at the books as he walked. He noticed that none of the books seemed to be in order, there didn’t even seem to be any system to it.
“How do you find anything in this mess, nothing is placed according to subjects or title.” Sasuke asked frowning a little as he began doubting the blond could ever find the book he needed in this mess.
“We tried to sort it out once but to be fair it was too much work, after a while we just learned where the books were placed, seemed like an easier thing to do.” Naruto responded as he stopped by one of the shelves and let his eyes roam the shelves in search for the book. Sasuke raised an eyebrow, had he heard right? The blond actually knew where every book in the shop was placed.
“Here.” Naruto handed it to him. “Last one we have.” Sasuke took the book from Naruto and flipped through it, he was not really paying much attention to the pages as he had to admit he was impressed that the blond had memorized the entire bookstore.
“But to be fair the book isn’t that good.” Naruto interrupted Sasuke’s train of thoughts
“Oh and why is that?” Sasuke asked.
“Well it all depends on what you need it for, a general knowledge of consumers it might be all right but if you’re looking to understand a certain consumer you have to look into culture of the specific country. Culture is the main thing affecting consumer behaviour, we have one book on consumer behaviour in Europe, one on consumer behaviour in Asia, and one for Japan. Naruto walked passed Sasuke and climbed the ladder and pulled out one book before sliding the ladder on wheels a little to Sasuke’s right taking out another book, then he moved the ladder again and took out a 3rd book. He climbed down and handed the 3 books to Sasuke who for the first time in his life was surprised.
“What?” Naruto tilted his head a little, like a dog would do when it’s owner spoke to it.
“Nothing, just that not very many people manage to surprise me. You seem to know a lot for someone who doesn't go to university or one who barely seem to have passed upper secondary school.” Sasuke replied.
“Oi, are you implying I’m not smart enough just because I didn’t go to the university?” Naruto growled, somehow the Uchiha knew exactly which button to press to annoy the blond.
“Well you do work in a run down bookstore and steal for a living, somehow I doubt the last part is even considered a decent job even for the poor.” The raven answered. Naruto opened his mouth to say something but closed it again as he had no comeback, he knew Sasuke was right in someway.
“I’ve read them.” He answered after a minute of silence.
“You’ve read them, like all of them?” Sasuke asked, again the blond had managed to surprise him. Naruto did not answer just nodded to the fact, Sasuke looked down on the books and let his mind figure things out.
“Well then do …. Umm.”
“Naruto, Uzumaki Naruto” The blond answered.
“Well then Naruto I’ll take these two.” He handed Naruto the book he had initially wanted and the book on consumer behaviour in Asia. “I take it I don’t have to introduce myself, after all you’re the one that broke into my family’s business.”
“Yeah.” Naruto blushed a little, the stern onyx eyes has softened and it had caught the blond a little off guard.
Back at the counter Naruto punched in the price of both books and began wrapping them in brown paper.
“Sorry we don’t have bags.” He said.
“That’s okay.” Sasuke said giving Naruto the amount displayed on the small screen on the till. Naruto accepted the money and counted it before giving back the Uchiha the correct change and the books.
“So you’re really not going to report me?” Naruto finally asked, the question had been nagging him in the back of his head ever since the raven had stepped in the store.
“Hmm tell you what, since you have read the books I just bought you can help me write my essay and in return I promise I won’t report you.” Naruto felt slightly relieved, he could do that. “But …” There it was the but, ‘There’s always a but.’, he thought “… if I get a lower than an A the promise is cancelled.” Sasuke said. Naruto swallowed and let his mind process the last part, how hard was it to get an A, he had actually never done an essay before.
“Okay deal.” He found himself saying before even having an answer formed in his head.
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow then.” Sasuke said leaving the store with a smirk plastered to his face, the deal, the more he thought about it, was nothing but an excuse to see the blond again without raising to many questions.
