Gaara felt like he was still in a daze when he finally gathered himself up enough to return to the main building, and simply followed the noise of talking to guide him back to where the other people were. He scanned the room for Neji, not sure whether or not he wanted to see the other ninja, but feeling the same question pulse through his mind once more.
Why?
They had been talking, it had seemed a bit surprising to him that Neji, who had said only a few words to him ever before suddenly showed any interest in him. That he wanted to know more about Gaara was something the Kazekage was not used to. It seemed no one asked him questions like that. Naruto seemed to have an instinctual ability to understand him, and his siblings never brought up the past. No one else really knew very much about him, about the things he felt and wanted. Even Gaara was not sure of what those things were. He had achieved his goal, he was needed by many people, but at times, it felt empty. There was something missing, and he could not place it.
Why did he kiss me?
“Hey!” he heard his brother’s voice, loud and slightly drunk, and looked up to see Kankurou coming toward him, arms waving in greeting. “Here comes the funk! Never mind, you guys, I found him!”
“Gaara, why do you always disappear?” Temari hurried to his side, her face stern, her eyes disapproving. “Why not enjoy time with your friends instead of always brooding alone? If I thought you wouldn’t have a good time, I wouldn’t have made you come.”
“Gaara, are you okay?” Kankurou scratched his head as his brother remained glassy-eyed throughout Temari’s scolding. “Are you drunk?” he started laughing raucously and patted his brother on the back solidly. “Haha! See, he’s having fun, Temari! Don’t get on his case!”
“Gaara’s drunk?” Naruto heard Kankurou and came over at once, his own face a little flushed as he smiled brightly at his friend. “Gaara, are you drunk?”
“He is not drunk.” Temari leveled a glare at Kankurou. “Are you, Gaara?” her tone held more than a note of menace, not that Gaara had ever been afraid of her. He couldn’t actually think of anyone he had ever been afraid of, come to think of it.
“No.” he answered finally. “I’m…tired.” He decided this was the perfect time for an excuse. He could see most of the people had left already, anyway. It would be no insult for him to leave now as well.
“We should go, then.” Temari nodded sharply. “Kankurou, we’re leaving.”
“Aww, but I was gonna have a drink-off with…um, with…” he narrowed his eyes.
“No, no more drink-offs. Seriously.” She huffed in disapproval. “It’s like Gaara and I inherited all the good sense that you missed. Try to act dignified. You’re here on business, it isn’t just some excuse to party.”
“Such a nag.” Kankurou frowned grumpily, but waved to the others. “Okay, we gotta go now! Thanks for having us!”
“Yes, thank you.” Temari bowed slightly. “Sasuke, if the stain won’t come out, I’ll see that Kankurou pays for it.”
“Good.” Sasuke narrowed his eyes at the eldest Sand sibling, and Naruto elbowed him, shaking his head sharply.
“No, no, don’t worry! I’m sure it’ll be fine!” the blonde insisted, while Sasuke muttered something under his breath. “Thanks for coming! Seeya later!”
Gaara nodded at them, following Temari and Kankurou outside. They were silent for almost two minutes, after which Temari began her standard post-party rant. “You were missing for the whole time! What do you even do? Go take a nap?” this was addressed at Gaara, and then she turned on her older brother. “And you! It’s a wonder they even wanted you back after last time! Every time I take you two anywhere, I spend the whole night trying to stop Kankurou breaking things and making an ass of himself, and then trying to make sure you haven’t been kidnapped, and have just found a nice brooding spot. You realize you’re the Kazekage, right? You can’t just wander off whenever you want. Anything could have happened to you.”
Why did he kiss me?
Gaara wasn’t really paying attention, and he wasn’t that worried by Temari’s displeasure. She was usually annoyed for some reason or another. However, as usual, Kankurou jumped to his defense. Gaara wondered if he did this out of loyalty, or just because he thought it was smarter to be on Gaara’s side than Temari’s, or his own.
“Hey, you aren’t his mom!” Kankurou told her. “And it’s not like he needs protecting. He’s fucking Gaara. Who’d even want to try and kidnap him unless they had a death wish?”
“Yeah, hmm, I don’t know, am I the only one that was there three years ago when he was kidnapped?” Temari shot back.
“Well, I mean, it’s not like he went quietly.” Kankurou grumbled. “Giant wall of sand and all that, everyone in the village knew what was happening before it happened.”
“Still!” Temari sniffed in a superior fashion. “I just wish the two of you could get used to your diplomatic functions and perform them a little better! Kankurou, you always end up drinking too much and doing something ridiculous. Gaara, you might as well not even come to these things, for all the time you spend around other people. I understand it’s annoying when it’s a bunch of stuffy dignitaries, it gets really boring, but those people are your friends!”
“They’re your friends.” Gaara answered, and she suddenly went silent. Even Kankurou looked a bit uncomfortable, and Gaara took a moment to piece together how that sounded before he realized what they thought he meant. “I mean, I don’t really know any of them, except Naruto.”
And I kissed Neji. Well, he kissed me.
“Well, they all care about you! Even if you don’t know them that well, they want to know you, and they’re all good people!” she turned a threatening glare on her other brother. “Right, Kankurou?”
“Yeah, man, you should have seen how much Ino drank when we squared off!” Kankurou began, and was silenced by a sharp strike to the back of the head from his sister.
“Anyway, I’m trying to say, I know you feel lonely sometimes. Don’t you think if you had more friends, that would help?” Temari suggested.
“You two are my friends.” Gaara told her. “And Naruto. That’s three people. How many should I have?”
“There’s not a set number.” Temari told him, smiling encouragingly. “Just try to be a little more outgoing, and I bet you’d be happier. You’re my little brother, you know! Even if you don’t need protecting, I want to see you happy, no matter what.”
“I see.” Gaara nodded thoughtfully. They reached the Hokage’s tower and entered, going up to the floor where the special guests were housed. The siblings had neighboring rooms up there where they would be staying all week for the celebration ceremony. As they reached their floor and started down the hallway, Gaara made up his mind. “Have you ever been kissed?” he asked his sister, his tone entirely conversational, just as though he was asking her for her latest mission report.
“Wh—wha—what kind of question is that!?” she yelped, looking at him in horror and flushing brilliantly red. “Gaara…that’s not a question for just…just out here! Come on, if you have those sorts of questions, you can come to my room and ask them in private.”
“Oh, I see.” Gaara nodded. He hadn’t realized it wasn’t an appropriate question, but if Temari had advice to give him, he would certainly take it. He was sure that if he couldn’t figure anything out, he’d be up all night thinking about it. Not that he slept much, anyway. Years of being afraid to sleep couldn’t be erased by Shukaku’s removal. He honestly attempted to sleep, but he usually achieved no more than a few minutes before his subconscious fear woke him again. But a night spent agonizing over what had just happened would be less restful than usual.
“Yes, this is gonna be great.” Kankurou followed them, and Temari gave him a glare.
“I didn’t say you could come.” She hissed at her older brother, and he attempted to look pathetic. Mostly he just looked confused.
“Hey, I might have some advice, too! Who says I’ve never been kissed?” he asked her indignantly.
“Okay, fine, but whatever we talk about in here is meant to be private, got it?” she insisted, ushering them both into the room. Gaara took the only chair, and Temari sat on the edge of her bed, leaving Kankurou to sit on the floor. “Okay then.” She pulled her legs up and crossed them neatly beneath her. “Who kissed you?” her dark eyes bored into Gaara, and he was momentarily stunned. He had not intended to tell anyone about what had happened. He still wasn’t sure what he thought about it, and he had no idea how to react. He wasn’t going to tell Temari, who would take it too seriously, as she often did, or Kankurou, who would likely leak the information to most of the Leaf before they left at the end of the week.
“Oh man!” Kankurou was beside himself. It had been a while since he’d had anything to drink, but he’d had so much that he was still rather tipsy, and this all struck him as hilarious. “You got some action tonight, Gaara? Was it at the party? Oh, lemme guess!”
“This is not a game, Kankurou.” Temari glared at him. “And if you don’t have anything useful to say, you can just leave.” She turned to Gaara expectantly. “Well?”
“No…nothing like that happened.” He lied. He wondered if they could tell, as he hadn’t lied to them in years, and he figured they knew him better now and might be able to notice the difference. “I was just curious.”
“Really?” Temari seemed highly suspicious. “Just curious, huh?”
“Yes.” He insisted stolidly.
“Weird thing for you to be curious about if you didn’t have a specific reason.” She grumbled slightly, clearly put-off, but unable to tell whether or not he was lying to her. Gaara thought quickly, and invented a story.
“I heard some of the others discussing such things.” He told her. “And I was curious.”
“But no one kissed you?” she asked, as though trying to trick him into answering a different way. Gaara wondered if she thought that might work because it would almost certainly work on Kankurou. At least, at that moment. Overall, he was an excellent ninja, but at times, he could lean toward the side of excess.
“No.” he lied again, feeling a bit of guilt, and shoving it down. It wasn’t really her business what he did on his own time. It wasn’t as though the fate of Sunagakure hinged on whether or not he’d received his first kiss that night or not.
“Okay then.” She finally conceded. “Then I guess if you want to know about that sort of thing, I am your big sister. It only makes sense that you come to me.”
“What about me! I would know more about kissing girls.” Kankurou insisted.
“Oh yeah? How many have you kissed, then, big shot?” Temari demanded. “And I want names so I know you aren’t just making up a number.”
“Well…that is…I mean, not too many, really, I mean, being a ninja is very hard work…and advisor on top of that…” he stumbled along.
“Ha! I knew it! None!” she pointed at him triumphantly, and he glared at her.
“No! I just have to think, is all.” He frowned in concentration. “Okay…I think…five.”
“Who?” Temari insisted, a highly skeptical look on her face.
“Well, when we were in academy, Kaoru—“
“Academy? So you were kids?” Temari snorted. “That doesn’t count.”
“Fine!” Kankurou’s buzz seemed to be wearing off under the power of his irritation. “Well, then Hikaru, the one who works in the hospital? The nurse with—“
“Okay, yeah, got it, next.” Temari seemed very annoyed that he actually had kissed real girls.
“And then Hana at the festival three years ago—“
“That was you! And you guys only kissed once, and she slapped you!” Temari interrupted. “That one doesn’t count either.”
“I don’t see why it doesn’t.” he grumbled. “Why do I have to be interrogated like this?”
“I’m just making sure you’re qualified to give advice about this sort of thing.” She straightened her back. “Your record’s spotty, but I suppose it will have to do.”
“I wasn’t even finished! And what about you? Why don’t you list off all your swarms of boyfriends?” he glared at her, and she unfolded so swiftly that he hadn’t realized what was happening until she’d kicked him in the head already, and she was settling herself back down while he clutched his head.
“So, Gaara, what do you want to know about it?” Temari addressed her younger brother in a much gentler tone than she had likely ever used on Kankurou. She used it when she was feeling responsible for Gaara, and while it irritated him a bit, it also warmed him to realize that she cared about him genuinely.
“What sort of reasons are there for kissing people?” Gaara asked her, his brow furrowing seriously once more. She could tell something was going on beyond what he would say, but it was clear he didn’t want to share any details with them, and Temari decided she would respect his privacy. That didn’t mean she wouldn’t try to figure out who this was about.
“Do you mean, like…how mothers kiss their children, or how little kids kiss to see what it’s like, or how people our age might kiss?” she asked, not sure she understood the question.
“Yes, the last one.” He nodded expectantly.
“Oh…well, I don’t know, I mean, usually they would kiss because they have feelings for one another. I don’t really kiss anyone for any other reason that I can think of. Mother used to kiss me goodnight, of course, but that’s different.” She coughed, knowing that it pained Gaara to hear about their mother for obvious reasons. “But yeah…if people are interested in each other…romantically, then they would kiss. Like Hinata and Kiba.”
“Hmm, yes, or Sasuke and Naruto.” He nodded shortly. “That is what I assumed. I just wanted to check.”
“Well…I mean, are you sure you don’t need to know any more? Or like…is there a person you’re interested in?” Temari asked, and Kankurou, even though he was nursing a heavy bump on the head, giggled weakly from where he was lying on the floor.
“No, I don’t think you could answer any more specific questions.” He answered abruptly and stood, striding out of the room, leaving his siblings rather disappointed.
“Something’s going on with him.” She told Kankurou. “And I think you’re right, it did happen tonight. Did you see how weird he looked when we found him? Well, it had to be someone there, and there weren’t that many. I’ll just check and see if any of the girls are following him around, or asking questions…”
“It could be a guy, too.” Kankurou offered, and after a moment of silence he burst into giggles.
“You are totally worthless.” She sighed heavily.
