Fox Hunt

“Attack the fox. Bring him to me.”

‘Yes, master.’ It was the only thought in his mind as he lunged at the blonde ninja.

He never touched his target, however, as someone had jumped onto his back. Shikamaru growled loudly when he hit the ground, immediately trying to wriggle free of his captor’s hold.

“Run, Naruto!” he heard someone yell, as the dog barked and snarled.

‘No! I must get the fox!’ He twisted around fast and latched onto the human’s shoulder, his long fangs penetrating the soft flesh. The pain-filled scream sent a pleasing tremor down his back and the lovely taste of human blood filled his mouth. He almost wished he could have savored the moment, but he had a mission to complete. He increased the pressure of his jaw and felt a bone or two break at the strength.

The dog was about to release the man’s shoulder when something large rammed into his side, causing him to roll away from the bleeding human. He immediately stood, arching his back, fur on end, growling and baring his teeth at the one who’d attacked him.

A lighter furred dog stood in a similar pose a few feet away, and behind it the black dog could see blonde hair running off into the darkness.

“Bring me the fox!” the voice commanded. “Get rid of any who stand in your way!”

If the dog could have smiled, he would have. The power flowing through him swelled; he knew he was strong enough to do this. Unfortunately, he realized that he wouldn’t be able to have much fun with the other dog snarling at him. His quarry was escaping.

Planning on just dodging the white-furred mutt, he took a step to the side. He was actually quite surprised that small motion triggered the other into attacking. The floppy eared canine pounced on him, biting and growling, almost pinning him to the ground.

The black dog knew better. He made sure his feet were planted firmly in the dirt then whipped his head around and latched firmly onto the mutt’s neck. He took some satisfaction in the painful whine that reached his ears. While the other tried to claw at him, Shikamaru raised to his full height. Building up the power flowing through him, he easily swung around and threw the large, white dog into a nearby house.

“Akamaru!”

Paying the other humans no mind, he bolted off in the direction the fox had gone. Not only did his nose guide him, but the red color at the edges of his sight increased to a sort of tunnel vision. He was able to look far ahead, and he saw his prey jumping through the trees. He wasn’t too far away.

Growling happily at the discovery, the black dog followed, easily leaping into the trees and bounding from branch to branch. He didn’t think that this large form could ever have done such an agile thing, but with his tail as a rudder and sharp claws digging into the tough bark, it all made the job a lot easier.

He emerged into a small clearing, seeing the golden hair just vanishing into the trees on the other side. He was close.

The victory within his mind was cut short, as a puff of smoke appeared around him, quickly clearing away and the black dog found himself surrounded by a handful of dogs. They were of different sizes and breeds, all adorning some kind of clothing and a familiar headband.

He snarled menacingly, lowering his head, fur bristling higher upon his skin. He didn’t have time for this! The fox was getting away! The inhuman power being pumped into him swirled around, piling more and more, casting him in a silvery glow as it kept building, escalating higher and higher. His muscles tensed and he howled loud, face turned toward the dark sky.

“Kyuubi!!”

Releasing one last growl at the band of canines around him, the black dog freed the power. He shot off like a flash, leaving the dogs dazed at his speed. It was almost like he was as fast as time; when he followed the fox back into the village the people he passed seemed to be moving in slow motion. Nobody noticed his presence as he moved through the crowds at lightning speed. His nose carried him over a wall and into another bundle of woods, this one he knew was owned by a clan; which one he couldn’t recall.

Shikamaru saw him. The fox was just ahead and only a few more bounds would grant him the opportunity to do his master’s bidding.

“Bring him to me.”

He moved so fast, by the time the blonde ninja was turning to see what was there, the black dog was already upon him. Sharp fangs bit down into the human’s arm as he brought it up to protect his face. They fell to the forest floor, the dog losing his hold as they rolled onto the soft grass. He wouldn’t give the other another chance to escape, though, and immediately attacked again, this time latching onto the bicep of the same arm. The dog held tightly, ignoring the struggling from the human at the attempts to push him off.

His nose flared as the scent from the fox increased considerably around them, and he noticed the color of the human’s eyes had changed completely. ‘Yes,’ he thought, enjoying the more feral look the ninja was sporting, ‘let’s see who is stronger.’ He released the flesh between his teeth and was going to lunge at the other arm, when a buzzing sound stopped him.

Small black beetles began flying all around him, forcing him backward, away from his prey. ‘No!’ The dog tried to leap at the human still lying on the ground, but the bugs settled on his feet, pinning him to the grass. He snarled in frustration. His master wanted the fox, damn it! He had to get the fox! Further efforts to try and move only proved futile, as more of the beetles came from the darkness, completely covering his black fur and buzzing madly.

The dog let out a high pitched bark as he started to feel the power surrounding him begin to fade.

“…what is this?” the voice wondered, bringing what was left of Shikamaru’s consciousness to the front of his mind, demanding an answer.

He looked around his body, noticing the bugs and glanced at Naruto, now standing next to another man wearing dark glasses. He felt his heart give a painful twist at not only seeing them together, but also noticing the blood running down the blonde’s arm, knowing he had done that. ‘Aburame… boyfriend… bug tamer.’

It felt like this “master” had suddenly opened his mind like a book, and flipped to the information indicated by his thoughts. He continued to feel like he was being drained as the one inside his brain gathered what he needed. It was quite sudden when the presence left; the power being given to him vanished completely and he gasped at how weak he felt without it.

Shikamaru tumbled to the ground with a thud, panting heavily, eyes gazing on the two men standing a few feet away. His furry lids fell closed as the beetles continued to eat away what little energy he had left to remain conscious.
