Okay, now will come a bit of time jumps. I will state Naruto’s age at the beginning of each chapter even if the age doesn’t change. Still in chronological order, just jumping ahead once in a while. If that was confusing, just tell me.
Naruto, age nine.oOo
Iruka woke up to screaming and rushed from his bedroom to where the blond was sleeping. He gently shook the younger boy awake, his nerves fraying every time it took longer for Naruto to wake from his nightmares, and now the nightmares were accompanied by pain. Every time Naruto woke up from a nightmare, all he could do is lie in bed and whimper while tremors passed through his body. The pain only started after a month since Naruto came to the spirit realm, and has been going on since then. Naruto didn’t cry. Iruka seen older more experienced Guardians cry at less pain, but Naruto stopped crying after a few months. From the way that Naruto held himself back during these attacks, Iruka wished that they boy would cry. But all he could do now is hold the boy close, humming softly and rocking, and hope that help would come soon.Just as he thought it, Tsunade and Sakura came in through the bedroom door, Sakura going to Iruka’s side to help calm the boy while Tsunade prepared whatever technique she used to exam Naruto. The next fifteen minutes that passed were intense but Naruto eventually calmed down, not even fully awaking from the nightmare. Iruka followed Tsunade out of the room, leaving the young boy to Sakura’s care.“This has been the worse of his fits, hasn’t it?” Tsunade asked. “Has anything happened today?”“No. We had our lessons and practiced, but not even half of his energy was used up.” Iruka frowned to himself, thinking, before he slowly said, “It has been a year since he came…” Iruka looked to Tsunade expectantly but the woman just frowned.“There’s never been a case like this… If a Guardian is called, they go to their Master. Even just being around his Master would make the pain less.” Tsunade sighed and rubbed her forehead. “The best we can do now is give him something that’ll lessen the effects of this.”Both looked to the door as Sakura stepped out and shut it silently behind her. She gave them a small smile. “He’s resting now, but not asleep. I think he’s waiting for you, Iruka-kun.”He nodded. “Is there anything else, Tsunade-sama?”“No. Go see to your charge.”Iruka stepped into the young boy’s room, trusting the two older Guardians to see themselves out. Naruto looked over to him and smiled tiredly.“’m sorry ‘bout this, Ruka.”The older man smiled. “Nothing to be sorry about, kit. I’m just sad to see you in pain like this.”Naruto waved a hand. “It’s nothin’. Gonna be just as strong tomorrow as yesterday.” The boy yawned widely and gave Iruka one last smile. “Night, Ruka.”Iruka brushed a few strands of bright blond hair away from Naruto’s forehead, leaning down enough to give him a soft kiss on the forehead. “Goodnight, Naruto.”oOo
“Ruka! I’m gonna go meet Kiba!”A tousled head appeared from a doorway, a brush trying to comb though the dark, tangle locks. “Be careful, Naruto. You know how your chakra fluctuates after your attacks. Keep your ears and tails hidden as much as possible!”“Haaaii!”Naruto pulled on his orange jacket and raced out of the house that moved into shortly after he arrived. It was similar to a normal house in the mortal realm but held extra protections and spells that would keep the potentially dangerous energy of a Guardian in training under control. And with Naruto’s wild energy, it was very helpful. The blond boy met his friend a short walk away, the Guardian’s companion dog staying away from Naruto as much as possible. Every time Naruto saw this, something in him would hurt but he also understood why. Kiba explained why foxes and dogs didn’t get along with each other. This also made Naruto wonder if it explained why most animals didn’t like him much when he was alive. His only pet was a goldfish.“Naruto, ears.”Naruto turned sharply to Kiba, feeling his fox ears twitch in the direction of the other boy. “Damn it!” It took a few moments of concentration and the ears disappeared, leaving Naruto with a human appearance.“Maybe we shouldn’t train together…” Kiba muttered, looking a bit worried.“There’s nothing wrong with me!” The expression didn’t leave Kiba’s face and Naruto scowled. “Race you to the park!”The fox boy took off to the park where he and Kiba usually played, not looking back once. He passed by many other Guardians, narrowly avoiding knocking a few of them down, and reached the park in a few short minutes. Taking a moment to catch his breath, Naruto looked behind him, not seeing Kiba anywhere.“Hey! Dog breath!”“Up here!”Naruto turned and looked up into the tree, seeing Kiba crouched on the branch with Akamaru perched on his head. He stared at the in astonishment. “How the hell did you get up there?!”Kiba grinned down at him. “Transportation jutsu. Kurenai-sensei showed us yesterday!”“Teach me!”Kiba hopped down to stand beside Naruto and slowly showed the blond the different hand signs used for the particular jutsu. Naruto did the hand signs slowly without channeling any chakra before Kiba told him it was correct. And before Kiba could stop him, he went through it rapidly and felt everything constrict around him, taking his breath away. He closed his eyes and focused on where he wanted to be, in the tree where Kiba was.Everything shifted and when Naruto opened his eyes, he was glad to see that he was perched on a branch in a tree. It took a moment, though, for him to realize that he wasn’t anywhere he recognized. He studied the people below him, listening closely to what they’re saying and his heart sank when he only was able to understand a few of the words. He was somewhere that mostly spoke English, and it wasn’t in a Guardian area. There were no protective energies that he learned to recognize, and the unrefined power of the mortal world began to give him a headache.Carefully, Naruto edged his way to the trunk of the tree and make his way. He stopped for a moment when he noticed that his claws were out, digging easily into the bark. He checked to make sure that his tails or ears weren’t showing before continuing, knowing that he had no real way to check his eyes. Iruka once told him that his eyes would turn red once in a while during his attacks, and that it was the animalistic part of him showing, but he never seen it happen outside of the attacks. His “whiskers” he couldn’t do anything about. His feet touched ground and Naruto felt a moment of relief before power surged over him, making him cry out and fall to the earth. His hands touched the grass and power arced over him again, burning his nerves raw and overpowering his thinking.Immediately he felt his form change, painlessly compared to the power, and when he looked up again, everything was from a much lower angle, and in a different scale of colors. Smell and hearing where nearly overwhelming and Naruto had to concentrate to get his senses back in order. His first thought was that his ears and tail were noticeable to anyone that could see him and that he must hide them, but after he calmed himself down enough to concentrate his chakra again, he figured that he didn’t have to hide anything, except for maybe the fact that he was a small, red fox completely in the open with five tails. Naruto quickly took cover under a bush and curled up on his tails, shivering, hoping that Iruka or another Guardian would find him soon. The bush quivered for a moment and Naruto looked up at the eyes that peered down at him, pools of pure black that seemed to study him even though Naruto knew that most mortals couldn’t see him. Most mortals.A voice called out and the boy turned his head sharply, and when he did so, his black eyes no longer seemed black. Naruto couldn’t tell what color it was and he was distracted once again when a familiar female voice called out, “Kitsu!”The boy was gently taken out of the way and Naruto was picked up, most of his tails hidden in a pair of arms. Never once had he been glad to see the medical Guardian. She stood up slowly and when the boy continued to watch them, Sakura smiled at him.“Did you just move here?” There was no response but Sakura seemed undeterred. “Do you like him? He’s completely tame if you want to pet him.”Naruto growled at being considered tame but the growl turned soft and comforting when a smallish hand gently petted him, soothing the hair on his head back. Naruto couldn’t help it; he leaned into the hand and relaxed, feeling his headache fade away slightly. He closed his eyes and what felt like the next moment he was back to his human form, still curled up in Sakura’s arms, his ears twitching slightly, and five tails trailing behind him. The girl’s lithe body sure held a lot of power…They stopped for a moment and a door that Naruto didn’t notice opened and he was handed off to Iruka who looked worried. The older man cradled Naruto against him and the boy could feel the man’s chest rumble slightly when he talked, calming his mind almost to the point of sleepiness.“Kiba-kun said that he just disappeared. He left a few minutes ago… Where was he?”“I found him in my area.”“In the mortal world!?” Iruka’s voice reached an odd level but he calmed down quickly when Naruto whimpered softly. The headache was still there, after all. “Is he all right?”“As far as I can tell, yes. He’s sensitive to any unknown energies, but that can be just a side effect from last night. He was in his animal form, so he might be feeling low.” Naruto watched with sleepy eyes as Sakura pulled a small pouch out of a large pouch over her hip. “This is the medicine. I’m not sure how strong it will be, so give him one for now, and only give it to him if he’s hurting.”“All right. Thank you Sakura-san. Can you tell Kurenai-sensei and Kiba-kun that Naruto’s okay?”“Sure thing. Good day, Iruka-san.”The door shut gently and Naruto spoke up. “I’m sorry, ‘Ruka. Kiba just showed me a jutsu and I wanted to get into tree where he was. I don’t know what happened.” His voice hitched slightly and he could feel the tears running down his cheeks. “It’s hurting again, ‘Ruka. It’s hurting like last night.”Iruka placed him on his bed and smiled softly down at him, taking one pill from the pouch in his hand. Naruto opened his mouth obediently for the medicine and he tasted cherries and a hint of cold vanilla before he took a drink of water and swallowed it. Immediately, he could feel the healing energies run through him.Naruto was only able to whisper, “’m sorry…” before sleep claimed him.oOo
