A metallic taste
hit the back of Kakashi’s mouth. Hunched in a chair, his forearms resting on
his knees, he did not reach up in time to stop the drip of blood from
splattering onto the floor. An arm sleeve was immediately placed over his
nostril. Peering down, he noticed the stray drip left a nice burst pattern of
glowing ruby; a stark contrast to the formerly stale hospital floor. He scuffed
the stain with his foot, smearing it into oblivion. Besides, a little more
blood on his already caked outfit would only enhance his haggard appearance at
this point. No, he would not be catching the eye of any female med-nin’s in this condition. “Unfortunately…”
Kakashi especially
hoped that he would not catch the eye of one woman. That
horrible disinfectant nurse, running around with a bottle and a rag on this
night shift. A stickler for cleanliness, she would come along and berate
him again and spray that foul liquid at his feet. The smell had nearly
nauseated him the first time, and lunch was not something he wanted to see
again. Lunch? A growl hit his stomach at the thought.
He had not ate since approximately 1 p.m., and here it was nearly 4 a.m. “What am I still doing in this godforsaken
place at this hour?”
Short, clipped
footsteps started coming down the hallway. Kakashi blanched. Had that horrible
nurse heard a tiny blood drop from all the way down the hallway, around a
corner, and possibly several rooms in? “Ah,
I hate this place. I can hear it now, “You’re getting blooooood,
EVERYwhere.” Ugh…” The
accent she loved to throw into her words, the whine, how she already smelled of
disinfectant and recycled air. Kakashi felt the room get smaller. He did not
want to deal with that horrid nurse, nor any other one, and what should she
care that he was still here, and…
“Kakashi!
I’m so sorry it took so long. Shikamaru’s internal
injuries were more severe than you initially thought, but I have a trainees
following up with care, though it may take several more hours. You see his…”
Sakura.
Just Sakura. The walls grew a bit, and his heart
slowed. His nostrils did not burn, and bile did not rise to the back of his
throat. For a moment he was grateful. After all, she was the one who took
Shikamaru out of Kakashi’s arms and started shouting orders to save his life.
He looked up at her, and while most people would notice only his blank
assessment, Sakura caught a look of gratitude in his upward gaze at her. She
decided it was located solely in his lifted eyebrow and widely open eye, but it
really did do wonders for his appearance. And then she noticed the rest of him,
still covered in dirt and blood. She interrupted herself right before “anterior
mediastinal hemorrhage,” and instead questioned Kakashi with a scrutinizing
look. Usually he was positively bored or sick looking when she reached that far
into detail.
“And you Kakashi?
I think most of the blood on you is Shikamaru’s, but
I should really check to make sure you’re okay. Kakashi?”
“Is Shikamaru
alright?” He was just still grateful that he was not arguing with in irate
clean freak right now. “Grateful,” he
decided, “I am grateful I will not have
to deal with that again tonight.”
“I already told
you that he will be okay, and I was asking you…”
“Oh, will you
check this wound then? On my side? I think it’ll need
healed.” A happy little eye crease accompanied his request, which usually got
him what he wanted out of the situation.
Sakura’s eyes
roved over the man as he stood to his full height minus an exaggerated slouch.
Kakashi’s attitude in hospitals always threw her mind into a loop. Usually a
methodical man, she could not follow his train of thought nor his weirdly timed
expressions. Out of all the positions he found himself in, how could a simple
hospital visit throw his demeanor so severely out of whack. She sighed and
moved next to him. Her far hand came in front of her to clench his closest
bicep, and her closer hand came to rest near the small of his back. A small
squish from the pressure of her hand on his clothing told her he had bled far
longer than he let on.
“Alright, come on Kakashi,”
she said with a sigh. “I’ll fix you up.”
“Aaah!” A strangled cry erupted from behind the both
of them as Sakura turned her head over her shoulder. But Kakashi did not move.
His body became so taunt, he felt like a stone statue. Sakura only mutely
acknowledged the screaming nurse before turning back to Kakashi. His eye had
nearly bugged out from his skull as he took on an appearance similar to the
time she and Naruto had collected their bells by
almost telling him the ending of his new book.
“Ze blood! Look at all zis
blood! Oh my goodness, you seez?! You seez what zis man does to ze cleanliness of zis ‘ospital!” The ending rang with an echoing screech.
Strangely enough,
Kakashi loosened himself enough to whine in fear and start chanting barely
audible words. Only on the fourth repeat, did Sakura realize he was chanting,
“Disinfectant nurse. Disinfectant nurse. Disinfectant nurse!” With Sakura’s grip on his bicep, he
could not perform a transportation jutsu, but he could certainly run. The pink
haired woman found herself nearly swept off her feet as Kakashi made a mad dash
down the hall. Sakura had to use some chakra to keep herself upright as she
refused to let Kakashi go, lest he make a complete break from the hospital. She
did not need to spend several hours hunting him down outside these walls when
Shikamaru was still in serious condition.
She used her
amazing strength to steer the man into a room near the end of the hallway. Not
the examination room she was intending, but this one would do. Kakashi turned
to slam the door, and after he checked for locks and found none, he performed a
jutsu to seal the door. So much for Sakura’s levelheaded
sensei. Who knew such a man could be taken down by a Disinfectant
Master? Sakura began to giggle at the thought, which Kakashi took as her just
laughing at him.
“This is no
laughing matter. That woman is insane. IN-sane!” This
made Sakura laugh that much harder, which forced a pout onto Kakashi’s
features. His eye drooped and dark circles of anger and irritation seemed to
form underneath immediately. His slouch became so pronounced, Sakura was sure
he was trying to touch his own toes. Before she could notice a jutting lip in
the outline of his mask, she asked the unusually irrational man to have a seat on
the bed after removing his upper clothing.
Questions
about the mission soon returned Kakashi’s demeanor back to normal. It was a bit
unnerving to see him so, unnerved in the first place. But the details he
offered helped Sakura understand the nature of Shikamaru’s
injuries. When she learned he had taken on a four man squad by himself, she
looked up at Kakashi quietly and shook her head before she returned to healing
his wounds.
She
had seen Shikamaru a lot lately. Even on relatively simple missions, he had
become rather banged up and bruised, more so than most returning team leaders.
When Sakura posed this question to Kakashi, he confirmed her suspicions.
“He
seems to be taking on missions designed best for a squad by himself. I suspect
it is not his genius that’s motivating this tactic, but rather a deeply rooted
emotional one. There were several better strategies to go with, but he chose
the one that put him solely in danger while protecting the rest of us. I don’t
know if it’s bloodlust or concern for his comrades, but he seems to be building
a solo emotional complex one mission at a time. I reviewed several reports from
his previous missions before being added to his team three missions ago. Each
one shows a continuing pattern: He prefers to take out the targets in a
singular fashion.”
“I
suspected as much.” Sakura stood up, but looked down at the toes of her shoes.
Concern etched her features, including lines across her brow. When she looked
to Kakashi’s face, she found concern there, too. Kakashi admitted to himself
that he did not like what he’d seen any more than she had. “He needs to get his
priorities straight before he kills himself. I can include it in my medical
report, and please mention it in your field report. Hopefully, we can get
together with the Hokage to convince Shikamaru not
travel a destructive path.”
“Hmm,”
Kakashi murmured a mute response. He was always ready for the long explanation,
but had little to say afterwards. He had said his piece, and unfortunately,
Sakura agreed with him.
“Alright,
Kakashi, you’re free to go. I’ll stop by to check on you tomorrow, alright?”
“Yeah,”
Kakashi muttered absentmindedly. His eye stared intently at the corner of the
room. He cleared his head for a moment with a quick shake before he looked up
to Sakura. “May I visit Shikamaru now?” Concern still covered his expression,
and Sakura worried a little bit about his mental state as well.
“Tomorrow, Kakashi. He’s still getting healed, and we
shouldn’t interrupt the med-nins.”
“Right… right.” He twisted around for his vest before
slipping it onto his shoulders dejectedly. In a puff of smoke, he was gone into
the night. Twilight streaked the sky when he reached his balcony. He turned to
look at the start of this new day, and hoped that it would be a fresh start for
Shikamaru as well. Kakashi himself had acted the same way, and it had nearly
destroyed him. He gazed over the towering buildings in the direction of the
monument he sometimes visited. Now was not the time to think about that. The
shower and bed calling him seemed like a lover’s embrace as he pried open his
apartment window. New days always started best after appropriate sleep.
