Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Naruto and Sai had shocked and hurt looks in their eyes and Kakashi just had a shocked look as all three watched Sasuke and Sakura kissing.

Naruto knew Sakura was in love with Sasuke but it still hurt to watch them.

‘Why him?’

Unable to take it anymore Naruto stood up in anger.

“Hey teme, what do you think you’re doing?!”

Sasuke and Sakura broke apart in shock. Sakura had a faint blush on her face from being caught.

Sasuke shook his head as if in a trance.

“Nothing dobe.”

He turned around and began walking away. Sakura looked at him, disappointed and hurt.

‘I should have known it would mean nothing to him. He probably just kissed me to shut me up.’

“Where do you think you’re going? You think you can just fight us, kiss Sakura and then walk away like nothing happened?” Naruto asked.

Sasuke didn’t say anything and just continued walking.

Sakura panicking, knowing that if Sasuke walked away, they wouldn’t bring him back looked at Kakashi for help.

“Kiss him again.” Kakashi mouthed.

Sakura looked at him shocked and confused.

“Kiss him?” She mouthed back.

Kakashi nodded his head.

While Sakura and Kakashi were forming this plan, Sasuke, tired from Naruto talking was about to disappear.

“Wait!” Sakura shouted.

Sasuke turned around and watched Sakura running towards him. She reached up and yanked his face towards her. Their lips made contact and Sasuke’s eyes widened in surprise.

‘What the hell? Is this a trick?’

Sakura began panicking when Sasuke didn’t respond.

‘What if he knows it’s a trick? Hurry up Kakashi-sensei!’

In desperation, she deepened the kiss.

‘Come on, kiss me back!’

She wrapped her arms around Sasuke’s neck and prayed that he would respond back.

Slowly he did and Sakura gave a mental sigh of relief.

Kakashi had taken longer than expected because he had to stop Naruto from shouting at Sasuke. That would have ruined their whole plan. Although not much time had passed, only several seconds, it was enough to send Sakura in a panic.

Now that Sasuke was responding back, she didn’t want the kiss to end. She opened her eyes to see if Kakashi was behind Sasuke yet. She saw him raising his fist and broke the kiss.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered to Sasuke.

Sasuke stared at her confused and collapsed into Sakura’s arms after Kakashi knocked him out. She staggered a bit under the weight, not expecting him to be as heavy as he was.

Sakura looked at Kakashi with a sad look as he took Sasuke out of her arms.

“You did what you had to do.” Kakashi said.

Sakura nodded her head but the sad look didn’t leave her eyes.

‘What if he thinks I betrayed him in some way?’

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sasuke opened his eyes and attempted to move his arms.

‘What the hell? Why won’t my arms move?’

He looked down and realized his legs were bound too.

‘Shit, I got caught.’

His eyes darkened as he remembered Sakura kissing him and then someone knocking him out.

‘That’s why she apologized. She tricked me!’

Sakura had noticed Sasuke was awake but had to build the courage to speak to him.

“You’re up.”

Sasuke glanced over and saw the object of his anger. He looked away, saying nothing.

Hurt passed through Sakura’s eyes but she had been expecting this.

“I know you’re angry with me but I’m not sorry. I did what I had to get you back.”

Sasuke glared at Sakura.

“You used me. I don’t appreciate being used.”

“I-“

“Don’t talk to me.”

“ Please-“

“DON’T talk to me.”

Sakura had tears in her eyes as she rushed out of the room.

“Teme-“

“Naruto, don’t. It’s their problem, don’t interfere.” Kakashi said.

Naruto nodded his head.

“I’m going to go see how she is.” Sai said.

He got up and left the room.

The atmosphere was tense as Naruto glared at Sasuke’s back and Sasuke just ignored him. Kakashi just….read his Icha Icha Paradise?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sakura wiped her tears away as she aimlessly wandered around the village they were staying at for the night.

“Are you ok dear?” An elderly woman asked.

“I-I’m fine.” Sakura said, quickly wiping away stray tears.

“A beautiful girl like you shouldn’t be crying. What’s the matter?”

“Nothing, I’m fine.” Sakura said, sniffling.

“Boy troubles?”

“How did you know?”

“It seems like all teenage girls are crying because of boys.”

“Sakura!”

Sakura turned around and saw Sai.

‘Out of the three of them, why did it have to be him?’

“I have to go. Thank you for your concern.”

The elderly woman nodded and Sakura walked towards Sai.

“What are you doing here?” She asked.

“I wanted to see how you were doing.”

“I’m fine.” Sakura lied.

“Liar, there’s deep pain in your eyes.”

“Ok, so maybe I’m not fine.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Why do you care?”

“We’re teammates; we have to look out for each other.”

This show of concern seemed to be the last straw as Sakura broke down crying. She collapsed against Sai, sobbing.

Sai wrapped his arms around her and used one hand to stroke her hair.

Villagers gave them weird and sympathetic looks as they saw a girl sobbing against a boy.

Finally, Sakura stopped crying and pulled away from Sai.

“Thanks.” She said.

“You’re welcome. Let’s sit somewhere private and you can tell me all about it.”

Sakura gave him an appreciative smile and they walked to a secluded bench.

Sai waited patiently for Sakura to begin talking.

“I….I wonder if I did the right thing. Kakashi-sensei thinks so and part of me does too. The part that knows that I had to do it for the sake of the mission. Another part of me, the part that loves Sasuke-kun, wonders if I did.”

Sakura didn’t notice Sai flinch when she said she loved Sasuke.

“He kissed me back, so I know he has to have feelings for me, even they are small, I wonder if I just destroyed any chance of that developing. What if he hates me?”

Sai knew it would be difficult to have this conversation but he didn’t realize how much it would hurt.

‘Why him? Why does she love him? He doesn’t deserve her.’

“Sasuke’s hurt and angry. His clan was massacred and it’s hard for him to trust people. Can you really blame him for reacting the way he did towards you, after what you’ve done?”

“No, I knew that Sasuke-kun would probably react the way he did. I did it anyway because I was desperate and I didn’t want to lose him again. Naruto had failed the first time and we both failed the second time. I couldn’t bear to fail again and loose him again.”

“Try talking to him once he’s not so angry. He’s not an unreasonable person, I’m sure he’ll understand why you did what you did.”

Even though Sai sounded completely confident saying this, he wasn’t so sure Sasuke would be so forgiving towards Sakura. A part of him wished Sasuke wouldn’t so he could have Sakura.

“Thanks Sai.” Sakura said, smiling.

“No problem.”

The two headed back towards the inn, one feeling optimistic and the other feeling guilty for their thoughts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, the four left the inn to head back home. The atmosphere was tense and no one spoke a word.

Sasuke had his hands tied behind his back with chakra strings with Kakashi leading the way, Sakura and Naruto on each side of Sasuke and Sai behind him.

Sasuke glanced at Naruto and Naruto looked at him, daring him to try to escape.

“Che.” Sasuke said, looking back ahead.

Sakura quickly peeked at Sasuke and looked away. He hadn’t said one word to her since they are fight and it was killing her. He seemed just as angry at her as he was with her before.

‘Will his anger ever fade? Should I just force him to look for me?’

Something told Sakura that forcing him to listen to her wasn’t the way to go but she didn’t know what else to do. His anger hadn’t faded one bit and she was afraid it never would.

Their eyes made contact and Sakura flinched as Sasuke glared at her.

Naruto noticed this and it was all he could do to not shout at Sasuke.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lunch was tense and once they were done, the five continued on their way.

It was beginning to get dark when they arrived at the gates of Konoha.

“We’ve brought back Sasuke Uchiha.” Kakashi said.

The ninjas on duty nodded and allowed them all to pass.

Whispers erupted as the five walked to Tsunade’s office.

Kakashi knocked on Tsunade’s door and walked in.

“We’ve retrieved Sasuke.” Kakashi said.

“Let me see him” Tsunade ordered.

Sasuke walked forward and looked at Tsunade with a look of defiance in his eyes. She chuckled when she saw this.

“Even when your neck is on the line, you look at me like that. A typical Uchiha move.”

Sasuke’s look didn’t lessen.

“You betrayed our village by leaving and although I never declared you a missing nin, you still need to have a trial.

‘She never declared me a missing nin, why?’

“Why didn’t you ever declare me missing?”

“You didn’t betray our village to cause harm to us or our allies, you left to get power to avenge your clan. There was no need to do so, besides we’ve been spending the last three years trying to get you back. If I had declared you missing, it would have been a waste because you’d be dead”

“Hn.” Sasuke said

He looked at her with a look of like the ANBU could kill me.

Tsunade chuckled again.

“You’re trial will be tomorrow afternoon at three. I’ll have ANBU take you to your cell.”

“Tsunade-sama, why is Sasuke-kun’s trial so soon? Don’t trials usually take longer to be heard?” Sakura asked.

“Usually yes but Sasuke’s presence has caused a stir. It’s best to get his trial done with as soon as possible. The elders will want to determine his fate as soon as possible as well.”

Sakura nodded her head in understanding.

There was a knock on the door and four ANBU walked in.

“Sasuke Uchiha, come with us.” The one in front said.

Sasuke walked toward the ANBU and they all left the room.

“Tsunade-sama, what do you think will happen to Sasuke-kun? Do you think it’s likely he’ll be executed or tossed in jail?” Sakura asked.

“Honestly, I don’t know. The fact that I didn’t declare him a missing nin and that he hasn’t attacked our village should help his case though.” Tsunade answered.

Sakura looked more optimistic but worry was still heavy on her face.

“Go home and relax. You may see him tomorrow before his trial.” Tsunade said.

“Ok.” Sakura said.

She bowed and left the room. The other three bowed and left as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasuke sighed as he sat on the cot in the jail cell. He would never tell anyone but he was scared about the trial. There was a strong possibility that he would be executed. He did betray the village after all and not only that he went to one of the most wanted S class criminals to gain power from.

‘Yup, things definitely don’t look good for me.’

Sasuke couldn’t help but think of Sakura. Even though he was very angry with her, he still loved her. Just because she had tricked him didn’t mean his love for her would automatically shut off, it would take time for him to fall out of love with her.

‘Che, I wonder if that’s even possible. If I could have fallen out of love with her, wouldn’t I have done that three years ago?’

Sasuke heard a door open and he couldn’t help but hope it was Sakura.

‘Stop being stupid, there’s no way Sakura would visit you. You pretty much guaranteed that with the way you acted towards her.’

Sasuke saw a ninja come up and open the jail door and place a fray of food in the cell. He shut and locked the door and walked away.

Sasuke walked towards the tray and pick it up. On the tray was a plate of fish, a bowl of rice and a cup of green tea. He sat back on his cot, broke his chopsticks apart and dug in.

Sasuke set the tray next to the door once he was done and sat back on the cot, staring at the wall. He didn’t bother glancing at the ninja who came back to get his tray. The ninja took the tray and Sasuke continued to stare at the wall.

He didn’t know how long he stared blankly at the wall; it could have been minutes or hours, before he finally decided to go to bed.

Sasuke lay underneath the covers and once again, for the past three years, his last thought was Sakura before sleep overtook him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning Sasuke woke up to someone opening his cell door. A different ninja placed his breakfast by the door and left.

Sasuke got up and grabbed the fish. This time it was a different type of fish, miso soup and green tea.

‘Fish again? Che, what did I expect, a gourmet meal? They’re not exactly going to go out of their way to give the best kinds of food to prisoners’

Sasuke finished his breakfast and the ninja came back and took the tray away.

Lunch came around and it was the same routine.

Sasuke was sitting on his cot when he heard a door open.

‘Is it time for the trial already?’

Sasuke heard two sets of footsteps and was surprised to see one of them belonged to Sakura.

The ninja let her in the cell and locked it back up.

“I’ll come back in ten minutes.” The ninja on guard said.

Sakura nodded her head.

“Thank you.”

She turned to face Sasuke and wasn’t surprised to see that he wasn’t looking at her. She wanted to go towards him but knew it wasn’t a good idea.

“I know you’re very angry with me and I know you have a right to be. I did trick you after all. I’m sorry your angry with me but I’m glad that your back. I’m glad that we were able to get you back. I didn’t do it with nay cruel intentions but I did it because I couldn’t bear to lose you again.”

Sasuke still refused to look at Sakura but her words were getting to him.

“I don’t regret kissing you either time, even if you only kissed me the first time to shut me up.”

Sasuke still didn’t look at her but his aura of anger had greatly lessened.

“Sasuke-kun please say something. Anything, even if it is that you hate me and never want to see me again. Just please say something.”

Sasuke finally turned to look at Sakura.

“I don’t hate you.”

Sakura looked relieved at this.

“I felt betrayed. I had let my guard down and you tricked me.”

Sakura opened her mouth but Sasuke stopped her.

“Let me get this out. You know how difficult it is for me to talk about my feelings.”

Sakura nodded her head.

“I…I…”

Sasuke seemed unable to finish at this point and a blush had appeared on his cheeks.

“Never mind.” He muttered.

Sakura looked disappointed but nodded her head.

“We’re going to be there, Naruto, Kakashi-sensei and I. Tsunade-sama requested that we testify on your behalf.” Sakura said.

Sasuke gave a brief nod at this.

A couple of minutes passed in silence until Sakura broke it.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered.

Sasuke looked at her, waiting for an explanation.

“I know it’s hard for you to open up to people, to trust people and I betrayed your trust with what I did to you.”

“Sakura, stop it. You did what you had to do, for the sake of the mission.”

“Why does everyone keep saying that?! I didn’t do it for the mission, I did it for you! I did it…to get you back.” Sakura softly finished.

“For me, the mission was about me. Whether you did if for the mission or for me, it’s the same thing.”

“You don’t understand, I did it because… because… I…I”

The two looked out the bars when they heard footsteps. They saw the ninja coming with the keys in his hand.

“Times up.” He said, unlocking the door.

Sakura nodded and turned back to look at Sasuke.

“I’ll see you at the trial Sasuke-kun.”

“Hn.”

Sakura left and the dread Sasuke had been feeling about the trial returned full force.

‘What if this is one of the last times I’ll ever see her?’

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sasuke’s face had its usual uncaring look but inside he was worried and scared. He looked around and saw Sakura, Naruto and Kakashi sitting on a bench. He looked in front of him and saw Tsunade up front, sitting in the center of the table, with the elders on either side of her.

He took his seat and waited for the trial to begin.

“The trial to determine Sasuke Uchiha’s punishment now begins.” Tsunade said.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sakura was filled with worry. So far Naruto and Kakashi had been called up to the stand and although it seemed to go well, one could never tell when it came to a trial. She knew she would be called next and she was dreading it.

‘What if I choke? What if give a bad answer? I can’t lie so I could very well help send Sasuke-kun to life in prison, or worse, I could help get him executed.

“Sakura Haruno, please come to the stand.” Tsunade said.

Sakura stood up and calmly walked towards the stand. Although inside was a whole different story. She had never been this scared in her life. She could very well help send the boy she loved to his death.
