Chapter 3: The bird that learned to fly
Run. Run. Run. Everything inside screamed that I run. The hyper scents of a thousand smells force violently up my nose: from the new scent of my own body, to the one of the man running beside me, even the forest smelled differently. Now it held a darker, danker, scent, and was all the more appealing.
The slap of human flash against the beaten game trail was engulfed by the scratch of the nailed paws following suit. Hunched over in such an animalistic fashion was odd, yet strangely familiar. The way this new form moved was like an ocean wave cresting. Everything felt…so natural.
I can feel the pull of muscle bunch then release with every strengthened burst of speed put out by the foxes, by my, back legs. Yes, I must remember, we are one now.
No more fights for dominance within my head. No more splitting head aches when he decides it’s a good time to fight. And, what I will most certainly never mourn is the burning from the damned fires. No, now ‘I’ am the fire. And, I think I will learn to love it…

“You know, if you go after him with out permission, you will be held in the same regard as he,” a voice startled me. Tossing the last article needed for this trip, I turn to see my…visitor.
Arching an eyebrow, I counter, “It doesn’t matter. I will retrieve him at any cost.” Pulling shut the pack, a saying Naruto once told me floats to the surface. Closing jaded eyes, sighing I repeat it to the only other man that would understand it. “"In the ninja world, those who don't follow the rules are considered trash, but those who don't protect their comrades are lower than trash.”
“That’s true,” Kakashi replied with little emotion. “But, is he really worth the risk to your career? You are promising, Hyuuga Neji, if you leave now it’ll be over for you.”
Spinning around in a flash, I have him pinned to the wall. The anger of a thousand lifetimes wells to the surface just within reach if I need it. All I have to do is call it to me, bend it to my will. “You, of all people, I would hope to understand the loss.” Squeezing his thick neck harder, the threads of chaos begin to braid neatly. “Oh, wait, of course they wouldn’t. You have lost all your team; your family. Sasuke left. Sakura traded you in. And, now, Naruto’s gone.”
When he makes no attempt to move, the value of the fight dims. Releasing him, I step back. “It doesn’t matter anyway, Kakashi. You are not worth it. I will find my friend, help him, then bring him home.”
“You are a fool Hyuuga, a bittersweet fool. While we’re on this haunted path down memory lane, should I remind you that a certain blond Shinobi once had the same ideals.”
“Naruto’s quest to save Sasuke was noble, don’t dirty it.” This is insane. How could he be like this? I had hoped he’d be different, that he’d understand the reasons why we…I…need to have him back. He’s the life in the leaf’s viens.
“You really care for him don’t you.”
The statement caught me off guard. No one knows of our relationship. It was better to keep it quiet; we both knew no one would understand it. The need for human contact so great that it encompassed every other feeling. “He is a shinobi of Konohagakure, family, and an asset to this country.”
“Right, that’s the most amount of bullshit I heard you spit Hyuuga. I know you better than that,” he hissed. Stepping closer, crowding me, he grabs my shoulders and spins. Facing that angry, hollow, black eye is eeire. “Now, tell me the truth, no crap this time. Why are you trying to bring him back?”
That’s when it hit me. This man had no idea what happened in the forest with Naruto. “I have to get him back, Kakashi-san, he needs help,” I gave him, defeated. Slipping off the hitae-ate it falls, clamoring onto the floor. White clashed with black. Steeling myself I told him the real reason for searching for him. “I will learn to fly for him.”
Elbowing him in the gut, I snatch the pack and transport from the room. It’s time this bird really did learn how to fly…

“Naruto, we should stop for the night, the moon rises.” Gaara yelled over the wind rushing us by. Looking over my shoulder, I can see the wear that’s taken it’s toll on him.
“Yeah, sure, let’s find somewhere to keep out of the storm that’s coming.” I can feel it approach, it’s promised to be a big one. It’s miles away, but I can still feel the eletric pulses play down every bit of my body.
“To the left, there’s a cave,” he says, slightly puffing.
Scrunching up my nose, I find his scent on the winds. Sweat. Exaustion. Pain. All are clinging to him like a bad smell. He is a ninja, how could a little running wear him down so badly?
“It’s not a ‘little’ running, Naruto. We have been going non-stop for an entire day,” he answers my thoughts out loud, sounding rather pissy if I do say so myself.
“Hey, how did you know what I was thinking?”
Leaping ahead, it’s his turn to look down at me. “Because you were talking out loud. Look there’s the cave follow me.”
Was I talking out loud? Hmm…maybe. Mentally shrugging, it gets shooed away into the I will deal with it later part of my brain. It’s been one helluva day, and rest does sound nice. Pouring more speed into my limbs, I catch up to the redhead streaking across the lush forest. The splash of color hypnotizes me, I must have it! Like a fox bating a hound, this quickly becomes a game. Let's see who will be victorious!
Tucking into myself, I leap overhead. Stalking through the branches, I can smell him strongly from my vantage point. I can see his every movement. His body moves like liquid, flowly flawlessly as it does his every whim. Each breath seems to be calculated into something grander than what it appears. Even the glace over the shoulder looks far to elegant in the lush wooded forest.
Stopping at the entrance to the cave, green eyes scan the area to locate me, he looks nervous. Good. Be nervous, you’ll taste all the better. Fear is a delicacy best served hot!
"Naruto?" You question, a mixture of aggitation and unease. "Are you there?"
