----------Konohagakure, 2 years later----------
Kakashi ambled slowly through the streets, heading towards the cafe where he was supposed to have met Naruto and Sakura an hour ago, but the sunset had just been too beautiful to pass up. And besides, if he wasn't late his students would probably die of shock. He was about to turn a corner when a strange presence caught his attention and he looked around for the source. His gaze fell on a young man who was beautiful beyond words. The boy had hair as dark as the night sky without moon and eyes like abyss. His skin was so ivory pale Kakashi thought he could have been a corpse if he wasn't clearly breathing. He looked familiar, and yet he didn't at the same time... Casually, the Jounin walked over to him, bent on finding out who this newcomer to the village was. He could have only been a newcomer. Kakashi would have noticed him a long time ago if he was a citizen.
“Yo.”
Sasuke looked up at the voice, having heard the steps approaching him and sensed the mind behind the scent long before a greeting was voiced. “I'm going to assume you're late and only getting later,” he said soberly in a voice that had smoothed out of adolescence like small folds fell out of black velvet. He was alluring to just about any person now and his perverted former-sensei couldn't be too hard to tempt. Still that wasn't his goal... even if it was achingly wonderful to be... home again.
“And why would you say that?” Kakashi didn't allow his surprise to show. Apparently this boy knew him... or knew of him. He carefully studied the way the boy's face... and the way he was standing... “Never mind. You've changed quite a bit, Sasuke. I almost didn't recognize you.”
“You didn't ... until two seconds ago...” Sasuke corrected him evenly. He was a little calmer than the last time they had seen him. In fact he was so calm he was icy. He brushed one inky black bang out of his eyes and studied his familiar sensei with these new senses. Kakashi's scent was a mixture of his shampoo and the open field as the dew burned off it at morning. Beneath that scent lay the faint traces - beneath the smell of the shower and on the same level as his own personal smell - of sexual play and not solitary play at that. Sasuke could hear Kakashi's pulse, the very blood rushing through his sensei's veins. The strength and power of the man were easily measurable with his new eyes, the Sharingan’s power greater than even the level of the Mangenkyou… Sasuke shook his head a little and tilted it. Those thoughts could wait until later. “How have things been here in the village since I've been gone?” his tone was still even, but a small part of him quivered almost violently hoping for news of Naruto.
“Why don't I tell you on the way to the Tower? You do realize, Sasuke, that I have to take you to the Hokage,” Kakashi said evenly. There was something unsettling about this new Sasuke but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. “The way you left has marked you as a possible traitor.”
The Uchiha smirked, a very collected little smile. “Of course,” he answered casually, as though they spoke of the weather. Sasuke had figured something like this would happen. Tsunade was a problem though. She was the Hokage, yes, but she was also a medical specialist and he was less than the standard perception of healthy. “Tell me as we go...” he paused and then asked, “Who were you meeting?”
“Naruto and Sakura, but you're a much better excuse for being late than I could ever hope to come up with, so...” Kakashi just shrugged and began to walk towards the Tower, Sasuke at his side. “As to what's happened, we've managed to avoid any more serious conflicts. We have a new peace treaty with Kumogakure and we're keeping a very close eye on Sunagakure. Sound for the most part is wiped out, but there are still groups out there causing trouble. Jiraiya's disappeared on us again, Naruto passed the last Chuunin exam a couple months back, Sakura decided not to try again, and I think Asuma's finally ready to propose to Kurenai. Now, if only I can convince him that he's ready...”
“Naruto passed the Chuunin Exam...” Sasuke murmured to himself as they turned down a street that was much less crowded than the others they had been on and the Hokage's Tower came into view. It seemed he'd only paid attention to a small amount of the updating, however, he'd heard everything Kakashi had said. “Sakura finally realized she was incapable of becoming a Shinobi?” he asked after a long, thoughtful pause.
Kakashi decided to ignore that last comment since Sakura wasn't around to defend herself. “Yeah, Naruto passed. Quite the upset. He not only passed, but he won the tournament.”
“So he's gotten better...” again Sasuke looked and sounded a little thoughtful. Actually distant was probably a better way to describe his behavior. It was like he was listening with half an ear and yet somehow managing to follow the conversation easily anyway. Not a terribly hard feat for Sasuke now. Before he'd had such a one track mind that he 'd been unable to think of anything else but Itachi and becoming strong enough to kill Itachi. The Tower loomed before them and Sasuke finally looked fully at Kakashi. “The old hag still around?”
“Unfortunately... Don't tell her I said that.”
“I won't,” Sasuke smirked very, very faintly as they entered the Tower. It took them very little time to reach the Hokage's office despite all the twists and turns Kakashi took him through. Sasuke couldn’t remember every seeing such wonderful craftsmanship in all of his travels. The halls of the Tower were exquisite and the whole building was worthy of being called a masterpiece. He’d found it a little odd that he’d gained such a respect for true art and craftsmanship since his Change, but he was slowly learning to deal with his extreme attention to the slightest detail. However now was not the time to study or oogle his tasteful surroundings. It hadn’t taken them long enough for him to get a good look around but he figured he’d get a good look at it all someday soon. They were even waved right in making things go faster yet. Sasuke readied himself. He knew he would not go unnoticed. What he was would most certainly prevent that. Tsunade-Hokage-sama was a very sharp woman.
Tsunade looked up from her paperwork and smiled at Kakashi. She'd found it amusing to flirt with him and also found that it was safe to do so since he was more interested in the lovely Umino Iruka than any woman. However the smile died on her lips as she laid expert eyes on the youth beside him. “Kakashi -…” she began but seemed to freeze indecisively for a moment as her eyes met Sasuke's. She finally found her tongue again and said firmly to the Jounin, “Leave.”
“Gladly. I'll go prepare the body bag,” Kakashi said lightly as he turned on his heel and walked back out. He didn't bother to mention who the bag would be for.
Sasuke was feeling a little relieved. He'd timed everything just right. the moment his eyes had met Tsunade's he'd reached out with his newfound power and trapped her mind. He'd frozen her words in her throat and then used her voice to order the other ninja out of the office. Kakashi had been none-the-wiser as Sasuke had not used Chakra. Once Kakashi was gone, he released Tsunade who blinked owlishly and then stared at Sasuke with eyes narrowed to slits.
“What did you do?” she practically hissed at him as she rose from her chair. “You are obviously Uchiha Sasuke... but what did you do to yourself.” ::He learned more from Orochimaru than he told us... Oh, gods, no. Please do not let him follow that dark path... Naruto... I don't know how team seven would handle such a cruel twist.::
“It was done to me,” he stated calmly and watched her with his vivid black eyes. “It was a sacrifice I made to bring him down. I am here to finish it.” he stated his voice dropping at least fifty degrees below zero.
Cautiously she moved around the desk and came towards the boy who had gotten taller since the last time she had seen him. “Uchiha... you are all such stupid fools... you are no different than he is. Killing him to avenge the family he killed. More family dead...”
“It ends with Itachi. I have no more family,” he stated coolly. In her vehemence, Tsunade's jugular vein had begun to throb at her throat ever so slightly. To the normal eye it was an invisible tick in the pulse groove of the neck, but to Sasuke... it was the ebb and flow of the sweetest life-giving substance, a source of power and strength. He had to leave before he did something that would not serve him.
“Then why did you come back to Konohagakure?” she whispered her voice dripping a small amount of warning venom.
“I will kill him where this all began,” Sasuke's voice was colder and harder than steel at the moment. He shook his head a little and then refocused his mind from her throbbing pulse to her eyes. “I request only immunity until that is complete and then I will either leave at your command or stay at your request, or that of the village.” ::Hurry woman... you have no idea how you are trying my control...::
Tsunade took a step closer and reached out to touch his cheek gently, cautiously and she watched his nostrils flare slightly and saw, from this close, his pupils dilate. Her own eyes widened as she watched the obsidian irises get swallowed almost entirely by the abyss of his pupils. The effect put a whole new meaning to fathomless. Speechless and unable to explain the warmth she felt beneath her fingertips despite his corpselike pallor, Tsunade stepped back all the way to her desk. “You... are no longer human... Uchiha Sasuke.”
“You would have said that instantly, but that I had anticipated it. Do I have your pardon?” Sauske pressed.
“It will be discussed....” she answered finally. Then added loud enough for the Jounin outside to hear her. “Kakashi! Come in please!”
“Wow, no one died,” Kakashi observed casually as he walked back in. “and here I was expecting blood everywhere. At least hear some yelling.”
“It wouldn't do any good. One of us already is...” Tsunade replied her voice a little shaken. “Dead...”
Sasuke sighed. Tsunade wouldn't let that go unannounced to at least someone. He didn't have a pulse or heartbeat noticeable to their senses, so therefore he was a walking corpse to her. Truthfully he was the living dead, an oxymoron that explained his situation very well. It meant that he had died once and was given a life beyond that of normal humans, a life which exceeded all boundaries of human limitations. He waited to see his former sensei's reaction.
Kakashi just looked at her, then looked to Sasuke, and then back. “Excuse me?” He was confused. They were both breathing, both moving, both clearly alive... Did she mean that Sasuke was dead emotionally or spiritually perhaps?
It was finally hitting home. Tsunade's own confusion was beginning to show through. She was stressed by being Hokage enough, but to have a living, breathing corpse walk into her office was a little too much. “Check him... be careful... but check his... his...” she floundered a little and then put two fingers to her neck as example.
Sasuke's eyes trailed from the near to hyperventilating Hokage to the confused Jounin teacher and waited. ::I wonder what you will do Kakashi-sensei...::
Thinking that Tsunade was suffering from too much work and too little sleep Kakashi decided to humor her. He sighed and gave Sasuke a questioning look, silently asking his permission to check his pulse.
Sasuke's eyes narrowed slightly with his usual dislike of being touched outside of combat, but he grudgingly turned his head to the side slightly and tilted his chin up. He really disliked this position of submission. He could feel his canines lengthen slightly and indent his bottom lip faintly as every muscle tensed. His instincts were fiercely warning him not to let someone touch his throat, but he ignored them. He had a mission to accomplish.
Casually, Kakashi reached over and put his index finger on Sasuke's neck over the artery. He felt nothing. Frowning he pushed a little harder, searching for the pulse he knew should be there. Eventually he found a pulse, but it was so faint and slow he was surprised Sasuke was able to move. “That's not normal...” he murmured, brow knit with confusion.
“You found a pulse?!” Tsunade moved forward reaching out to touch the place Kakashi was touching, praying she'd just missed it. That Sasuke was human and not something brought back from the dead to bring the people of this village more pain. She found the same thing, a very sluggish, unhealthy rhythm. So he was alive, but how? And did that make him still human?
Taking a step back he lowered his chin and glared at them. “Enough!” he snapped, irritable after having submitted even a little bit of his dominance. “Do I have your pardon or not, Hokage?”
The pale-blond woman pushed her hair behind her shoulders again and looked Kakashi. “This needs to be discussed... stay with him until we reach a decision on what to do with him... be cautious,” she finished and then turned to her desk. the other members of the council would be there in a few hours and this situation would be discussed. She was still suspicious. She wanted to know how Kakashi had found a pulse when she herself had missed it. She wanted to know why he looked so... unliving...
Knowing a dismissal when he heard one Kakashi bowed his head quickly and turned to leave, motioning for Sasuke to follow him. They walked in silence for a while, the Jounin heading once again for where Naruto and Sakura were waiting for him. “What did you do that unnerved her so much? and how... You're pulse is so faint I'm surprised you can move.”
One shoulder lifted slightly. “I didn't do anything. As for my pulse... that is my own business,” he stopped suddenly and looked to Kakashi. “I won't be going with you to meet with Naruto and Sakura,” he stated firmly, flatly, as if there was no argument.
Deciding to drop the issue of Sasuke's new strangeness - for now - Kakashi raised an eyebrow. “Why not? They'll be glad to see you. and besides, I'm supposed to stay with you, remember? That means you have to stay with me too, and I'm going to go meet Naruto and Sakura.”
Sasuke shook his head once negatively, his long black bangs swaying slightly.
