When I awake again, light is streaming in through my curtains. I turn my face to press it into my pillows, but instead of feeling softness – I feel something warm and firm beneath my face. I smell cinnamon and spice, and my eyes open up to see the crystal necklace Naruto always wears. My face is pressed against his chest, and he has his arm draped loosely around my shoulders. He is sitting up partially, but also lying haphazardly next to me. He is still dressed in his orange jump suit, exactly like he was the night before. I remember him waking me at least 6 times last night, after I would become fitful in my sleep from bad dreams.
“Naruto…” I let my voice trail off as a question.
“Please, don’t kill me,” he says in a voice rough with sleep. “I swear to God… it was the only way I could get you to stop.” He sounds like death warmed over, and I look up to see his eyes heavy with lack of sleep. If the rings beneath his eyes get much darker, he’s going to look like…
“Stop what?”
“After the last time I woke you up…” he yawns dramatically, eyelids sagging lower than before, “you wouldn’t wake up again. But you just kept whimpering. You were driving me nuts. I kept getting this overwhelming feeling of emptiness and pain. I thought I was gonna pull my hair out.”
I must have been dreaming about the baby… I can’t remember anything fortunately.
“Eventually, I got desperate. I didn’t know what to do, so I grabbed you. I was gonna beg until you woke up… “ he yawns again. “But then you just kinda… stopped. Every time I’d try to go back over to my side… you’d start up again.”
“Thank you.” I whisper, moved by his kindness. “Please… don’t say anything to anyone about this.”
“Right,” he scoffs. “Like I need you telling me that! I don’t exactly want to die from being crushed to death.” I shudder at the thought. “Sorry… look. You have to talk to Grandma Tsunade about this before you freak out and take off! You owe me!” By the end his voice is almost loud enough to sound like himself again, but then his eyelids droop nearly closed. I decide to take pity on him.
“Fine. I will go see her now.” I get up to grab my clothes and get dressed in something other than PJ’s, and see him stand up from the bed in a zombie-like fashion. “What are you doing?”
“Going with you…” he leans far enough forward, I’m worried he’s going to fall and break his nose.
“Don’t be ridiculous! You’re dead on your feet.”
“No power… on this Earth…” he yawns, “can keep me from going. Not after that. Believe it.”
I give an exasperated huff, and head into the bathroom to change. When I glance in the mirror, I realize I look awful too. Well… this is going to be fun. I quickly dress and head for the door of the apartment before Naruto falls unconscious. When I get there he is leaning heavily against the wall. I worry that he is going to stumble into someone or something… so I drape one of his arms over my shoulder, and put mine around his waist, in an attempt to keep him vertical long enough to get to the hospital.
As we walk out the front door of the building… I feel all the hairs on the back of my neck rise – like I’m being watched. I look around, but am impeded by Naruto’s nearly dead weight.
“What is it?” he mumbles with his exhausted face swinging within inches of my nose.
“Do you feel that?” I search the area with my mind, but can find nothing out of place. The feeling doesn’t go away.
“Nope.” He mutters. “You’re not getting… away that easily.”
I sigh and roll my eyes. After another moment, I hear the briefest hiss upon the wind and the feeling dissipates. I will need to be on my guard.

I’m now sitting on the blasted hospital bed waiting for Tsunade to return from the back room. I refused the majority of their tests. I only allowed them to scan my brain activity in an attempt to see if the “leak” in my mind is somehow visible. Suddenly, she bursts through the big double doors placing her hands on her hips and narrowing her eyes at me. She is obviously unhappy.
“Why didn’t you come in for tests sooner?!” She shouts down at me in her most authoritative tone. “And they tell me you won’t give us any blood samples?”
“Obviously,” I look her defiantly in the eye, “I didn’t know I needed to until last night. And yes, I have no intention to.”
“Why not?” she challenges.
“Because, you know I don’t want you running more tests related to the blasted miscarriage and whatever those bastards did to me. I want nothing more to do with it. Now what did your tests show?”
“There’s no question,” she says in a calmer, but still aggravated tone, “Your abilities are increasing in strength.”
“Why would they do that?”
“I don’t know!” she roars out, angry. “Some little brat won’t let me run any tests on her. It’s possible that it could be hormonal. It could be an effect from your reaction to the drugs before. It could be a lot of things, but I simply cannot tell without more samples!”
“What if…” I hedge, “Would it appear the same way if they weren’t increasing… but releasing?”
“What do you mean? Is there something more you haven’t told me?” She looks angry enough to boil over now.
“I have had the impression for a while now that… Orochimaru had done something to my mind. When I was staying with the Kazekage, I had a terrible nightmare – which was actually a memory... I was very young. Sasori of the Red Sand was in it, and he was doing something to my mind. It was making it burn horribly. After that… I realized that sometimes when I reach the limits of my ability my mind burns the same way.”
She frowns in deep thought. “Sasori was an expert in mental sealing jutsu.” She begins to explain. “It would make sense that Orochimaru would seek his help if he wanted to keep your abilities contained. It would also make sense that the jutsu is weakening… now that Sasori is dead.”
I nod. “Well then… I suppose that’s the most likely answer. Is there anything you can do to help resolve my problem? I’d hate to… hurt someone unintentionally.”
“Unfortunately, not without pinning down the exact nature of the problem. If we use the right method for the wrong problem… we could damage you.” She begins to step towards me. “So if you would just…”
“Nope.” I leap down off the table and evade her on my way out of the room. “Thanks, but no thanks.”
I leave the hospital as quickly as possible. Naruto is unconscious in the waiting room, so I continue on without disturbing him. As I step out of the doors to the hospital, I gasp in shock as I run into Kankuro outside.
“Kankuro?!” I shout with delight and start running toward him. After I begin my run, I abruptly stop. He is glaring down at me, with hatred in his eyes. What on Earth…?
“Well,” he says in a thick and sarcastic tone. “Looks like you’ve been busy while we’ve been away.”
