Chapter 28
Two pairs of golden eyes stared at each other from either side of the kitchen table. While Saya cleaned up after a small breakfast, Tetsuya stared silently at his father with a curious expression. The little boy didn’t know much, only that his father had come back and Akira was gone. It was a bit strange, for everyone, to behave as if nothing had happened.
Saya was honestly surprised to see Tetsuya’s reaction to Orochimaru being back in their home. After seeing what he had, she was worried that Tetsuya would be scared of him. He did eye him cautiously, but he wasn’t scared. He had even asked the man if he was ok.
“Mom, are we going to go back to the festival?”
It was an abrupt question after such a long moment of silence between the three. Saya was just putting away the last of the clean dishes when her face dropped.
“Oh, Tetsuya I am so sorry. I completely forgot,” she said apologetically to her son.
“We all did,” Orochimaru said softly as he looked lazily up at her. “If the weather clears by tomorrow, make it up to him.”
Tetsuya looked back and forth between his parents as the two of them just stared at each other. “Mom?”
Saya shook herself away from Orochimaru’s gaze at the sound of his voice. Their short, peaceful time at the festival when they arrived back in the village seemed like a distant memory. She grinned at her son. “We’ll go as soon as we can, ok?”
The boy looked to the rain pouring down outside and narrowed his eyes disapprovingly. Saya almost laughed, picturing Orochimaru doing the same at such a young age.
Silence fell between them once again as the subject seemed to drop. Even Orochimaru had very little to say as he sat with his elbows propped upon the table, letting his head rest on top of his hands that were clasped together. Saya also noted how tired he looked.
“Tetsuya, could you go to den?” Saya finally asked. “I’ll be in there in a moment.”
He complied, not saying anything as he yawned and left the kitchen table. Saya watched as he entered the dark living room and stepped off into the room beside it, turning on a small lamp as he did so.
“I need to talk to him about all of this,” Saya almost whispered as she turned her attention back to Orochimaru. Her pulse started to quicken at the thought. She didn’t particularly know what to say, only knowing that there was some sort of change coming soon.
Orochimaru sat still for a moment, only breaking his silence as he too rose to leave the table. “Very well,” he replied with a sigh. “In the meantime, I need to speak further with Kabuto. I will find out what happened during the night, Saya.”
His eyes cut into hers as he stood there. Saya didn’t quite know how to react to his words. Was he threatening or reassuring her? Either way, it made her blood run to her feet before the man stepped outside into the pouring rain without another word.
Saya sighed her to herself once he was gone, beginning to wonder if keeping up this act would be more difficult than it was worth. It was the very reason she wanted to speak with her son alone, which she wasted little time on as she joined him in their cozy den at the front of the house.
Tetsuya sat in the floor at a small table with his back turned to the doorway. He had also opened the blinds, watching as the rain continued to pour. Saya rubbed her temples before she entered the room and sat down in front of him at the table.
“Tetsuya, I need to talk to you about something very serious,” she started quickly, watching as his eyes shone up at her.
“And before I get much into it,” Saya continued just as quickly, “I’m going to ask you a question, and I want you to be honest with me. Do you understand?”
The boy sat up then, looking at his mother and seeing the seriousness in her face. He simply nodded at her question.
“Ok,” Saya sighed, pausing as she collected herself. She didn’t want to show how uncertain she felt or even thought. The next few moments would be a major turning point for her, and as important as his answer would be, she didn’t want to persuade it.
“I think he’s already mentioned this to you, but your dad wants the two of us to come live with him in his village. Is that something you would like to see happen?”
The two just stared at each other for a moment. Saya knew it was a difficult question to ask, especially with him being so young, but she was hoping Tetsuya could give her some sort of an answer.
“Akira’s not coming with us, is he?”
Saya bit the inside of her cheek at his question. She frowned, but she answered honestly. “No, he wouldn’t be.”
Tetsuya then turned his gaze past his mother and to the window behind her, almost appearing as if he were deep in thought. “He told me he wanted you to stay a long time ago, but you left.”
She had to search her mind for a moment, but Saya thought back to the time before Orochimaru lashed out and placed the curse mark on her. And even after, when he asked to her stay longer than what was needed, he told her it was her choice. It was his more open, gentle moments that made part of her sad to leave that night.
Tetsuya didn’t know his mother carried this curse with her; Saya had never told him about it. No matter why it happened or as Saya had recently learned, what it was for, she knew it would be several years before Tetsuya was old enough to understand it.
“He did,” Saya finally answered softly, “and no, I didn’t stay.”
Saya then had to hold her breath, fighting against herself as she felt a sob coming on. This is what she hated above all about Orochimaru. Placing an impulsive, meaningless curse on her to keep her tied down, when really, it was the very thing that made her run away.
“Maybe you should have.”
Saya almost narrowed her eyes. For a split second she imagined Orochimaru sitting opposite her, because even though the voice was different, it sounded so much like something Tetsuya’s father would say.
“I mean, if it’s been this long and he still wants you to,” he added. “He must really like you.”
“That’s not what I’m asking,” Saya replied gently. “I know you’ve only had a short time with him, but I want to know how you would feel about that time together becoming permanent. We would move to the Sound Village, without Akira, and you would eventually start your training. Or we can stay here and go back to how things were.”
“Either way, I won’t get to see one of them anymore, will I?”
“No,” Saya whispered sadly.
The two fell into a silent stare once again. Saya knew she couldn’t place this burden on him alone, but she at least needed to know how her son felt. She could tell he was contemplating, especially when he lowered his eyes down to his lap.
“Well,” he said sheepishly, “I would like for him to teach me.”
Saya grinned at him, but with sad eyes. It wasn’t an easy thing to choose, especially for someone so young.
“Is this because Akira’s gone? When are we moving?”
“Sort of,” Saya answered as her grin dropped. “But nothing’s set in stone yet, ok? I just wanted to ask you in case it comes to that. Just keep this between us for now.”
Tetsuya simply nodded, taking note of the serious look on his mother’s face. And that was that. The conversation soon changed as the two spent the rest of the rainy morning playing games in the den. In fact, it was just the two of them for most of the day.
Saya and Tetsuya spent lunch and dinner together without either Akira or Orochimaru as company. It made things seem like they were in fact normal again, but of course that was just a fantasy. The rain finally stopped and the clouds parted, giving the evening a warm glow. As peaceful as it was though, it made Saya’s mind wander with all sorts of worries.
In fact, it wasn’t until the sun had set and Tetsuya was put to bed that Orochimaru did return. Saya was back at the kitchen table, watching as fireflies passed by on the patio outside. Her eyes perked up as both Kabuto and Orochimaru could be seen approaching the house from a distance. She nervously stood to open the door, surprised to see the two men parts ways as Orochimaru approached her alone. He didn’t greet her as he entered, only closing the door behind him and drawing the blinds together.
“What’s wrong?” Saya asked with a quizzical expression.
“It seems your dog has indeed run away, Saya,” Orochimaru began as he finally turned to face her. “But to where and why is still a mystery. That being said, we’ll be keeping a watchful eye on this area for now.”
Saya knew what he meant, that she was being watched. She would have been mad, but it actually worked to her advantage. She didn’t know how long it would take Akira to get to the Leaf Village, let alone get word to them about Orochimaru, but if that was what he was doing, at least it wouldn’t be a defenseless ambush.
“Then why are you closing the blinds?” Saya asked as she crossed her arms.
“Privacy,” Orochimaru smirked at her. “At least, while I have you with me.”
A chill started to run up Saya’s spine, not quite knowing how to take his remark. She forced a smirk of her own to shake the feeling. “I was starting to wonder if you were even going to come back.”
“Did I have you worried, Saya?” he asked her, almost laughing.
Saya tensed her arms. “I just don’t like not knowing what’s going on.”
Orochimaru simply chuckled at her then. His eyes left Saya to scan the empty area downstairs before coming back to her.
“It’s late, again,” Saya told him with a sigh, wondering if he was searching for his son. Part of her wanted to go on to bed, but part of her also wanted to stay up and talk. The mood felt too awkward to leave it as it was.
“Why don’t you go sit down,” she suggested as she stepped into the kitchen.
Orochimaru walked past her without a word. While he settled down in the quiet living room, Saya rummaged through her cabinets. She pulled out two glasses and something she had been saving for a special occasion.
When they had moved into their new homes, Akira and Saya both exchanged housewarming gifts. It was funny at the time, as they both gifted bottles of sake to each other. But as Saya would soon find out she was pregnant, the bottle was put away unopened and never touched.
It’s as good a time as any, she thought as she opened the bottle. She poured the clear liquid over ice into the two glasses, picking up on the faint smell of peaches. Carrying the bottle with her, she took the two glasses into the living room to join Orochimaru.
He took the glass she offered to him with a smirk. Saya then set the bottle down on the table in front of them before taking the place next to him on the sofa.
“Not what I would normally expect from you,” he commented as Saya took a small sip from her glass.
“No,” she agreed, “but I’m getting a little tired of being on edge. Plus, with your little game of cat and mouse almost over, I figured you would want to take a little edge off too.”
Orochimaru didn’t respond at first, only raising an eyebrow as he emptied most of his glass into his mouth. “It’s not often I do,” he finally said quietly.
Saya gazed at him them. He wasn’t turned toward her, so she could only see the profile of his face, but she couldn’t help but notice that his jaw was clenched.
“Are you having second thoughts?” she asked him. “About all of this?”
He closed his eyes and chuckled softly to himself. “This hasn’t exactly been the type of challenge I’m used to facing, but no.”
Saya took another small sip of her drink, noticing that Orochimaru was already finishing his first. “So that’s that, then? We just pack up and move in with you?”
There was a slight tone of humor to her voice, which made the man cut his eyes in her direction. “What are you getting at?”
“Nothing,” Saya almost laughed as she reached for the bottle of sake and topped off his glass. “I just want to make sure you realize the seriousness of this. Tetsuya’s not some orphan running off to join your troupe and I’m leaving my job to go do whatever.” Saya paused as she waved her hand in his direction.
“You think I’m being impulsive?”
“It wouldn’t be the first time,” Saya said as she finished her drink and started to pour another.
Orochimaru turned to face her then. “Impulsive or not, it served my purpose. Put it to rest, Saya.”
Saya cut her eyes this time. Her curse mark started to burn practically on cue. “Trust me, I wish I could. But of course, now that I know that’s Tetsuya’s reason for being here, I can’t exactly wish it never happened in the first place.”
“You wanted the truth,” Orochimaru pressed her.
“I did,” Saya agreed with a sigh. She tucked her legs under her knees and adjusted her kimono, turning so that the two were facing each other. “There’s a lot of things I haven’t put to rest, not yet anyway.”
“Saya,” he growled at her in warning, his eyes cutting into hers.
She just stared back at him for a moment, swirling the contents of her glass around. “One day I’ll get it out of you,” she told him as she closed her eyes and drank most of her second glass.
Surprisingly, instead of getting agitated, Orochimaru smirked at her. “Perhaps, but I think at this rate your tongue will loosen before mine does.”
Saya was finishing the last of her drink when she then looked down to notice that he hadn’t even started his. “Not unless you catch up,” she replied as she set her empty glass on the table.
Orochimaru moved closer to her then, putting his face close to hers. “You’re trying to lure me,” he told her in almost a whisper.
“What?” Saya responded just as quietly. She could have sworn her heart skipped a beat at his comment. He knows, her mind was screaming at her. Somehow, he had figured out what was really going on, making his day-long disappearance with Kabuto make sense.
But then Saya thought about the comment he just made, about her loosening her tongue. Maybe she was just jumping to conclusions. Maybe the alcohol was already going to her head. Either way, she decided to play dumb.
“Oh this?” she almost laughed as she lazily pointed to his glass. “I don’t think I would say I’m trying to ‘lure you’ so much as I would say I’m trying to get us both to relax a bit.”
“Why?” Orochimaru simply asked her as he finally reached for the glass.
Saya dropped her playful grin. “It makes things less awkward, makes me feel more comfortable.”
Orochimaru looked down at his glass as he replied. “That can easily be taken advantage of. I have seen too many betrayals begin just as we are now.”
Saya didn’t respond at first. She watched as Orochimaru did turn his glass up, looking at her from over its rim when he was finished. His words still made her stomach turn. Saya glanced down at the table and decided against another round.
“Is that what you think I’m doing?”
“One of the first times I was truly comfortable with you,” Orochimaru began as he set his empty glass beside hers, “you put one of your scalpels to my throat. It was half-hearted, I know, but still part of you was driven to go that far.”
Saya just stared at him as her blood ran cold. She knew her worry was also painted on her face, made worse by the fact that Orochimaru’s eyes were hard as they stared back at her.
“I’m not,” was all Saya could manage as her eyes started to tear. She clenched her jaw as her stomach knotted up that much more.
He doesn’t trust me, she thought. It actually hurt her to think this, but he wasn’t wrong in suspecting her of betrayal. Of course, all his years as a shinobi must make it hard to trust anyone, even her.
Orochimaru didn’t respond, only kept his gaze on her. It wasn’t until Saya slowly moved to straddle his lap that his eyes began to soften. Saya looked down at him with a warm grin as she ran a hand through his hair. She also didn’t know what else to say, feeling that the need for words was past them at that point. So instead, she just leaned down to let their lips press together.
It wasn’t long until their intensity to caught back up with them. Their kiss quickly deepened, setting Saya’s shoulder on fire. Her mood changed as she went from calmly running her fingers through his hair to digging her nails into it.
Orochimaru sat gripping her hips as they began to rock back and forth on top of him. It didn’t take long for it to being him to full arousal, but as Orochimaru reached a hand between the two of them, he reached for her instead.
Saya gently bit his bottom lip as he moved her clothing aside and slipped a single finger inside her. As his thumb also teased her from the outside, she could feel just how quickly her body reacted to his touch. Orochimaru did as well, as he slowly pulled his hand away to unfasten his pants and let himself free.
There wasn’t any hesitation or guilt from Saya as there had been just a few nights before. Her mouth finally broke away from Orochimaru’s, sighing as she rose her hips and slowly came down over him. Orochimaru laid his head back, sliding down further on the sofa and pressing his hips into hers.
Their eyes were glassy as they glanced at each other only for a moment as Saya’s hips began to rock against the man again. As he laid himself further back, Orochimaru untied her kimono and let the rest of her body be exposed to him. He snaked his hands around her, pulling her close as his mouth traveled along her neck.
Saya wasn’t slow about her movements. He harder he gripped her, the harder and faster she ground against him. Even though he was still clothed, having her bare skin press against him set her on fire. Their mouths eventually found each other again with Saya practically panting against his. Her insides felt as though they were going to explode as she roughly pressed her body into his, moaning into his mouth each time he fully entered her again.
Orochimaru remained quiet but breathless as their hands dug into each other, nearing their release. Even as his body stiffened as his climax came, Saya held her face against his, forcing him to cry out against her lips. Saya moved with him as his back arched, hitting her in such a way that made her own come shortly after his. She clung tightly to him, letting out a shaky breath as her body rode out the sensation.
Their bodies slowly but surely began to relax around one another then. Even as their rapid breaths began to slow, the two kept their foreheads pressed together with their eyes closed.
It was then that another sensation took over Saya. It wasn’t her curse mark, but an overwhelming feeling of protectiveness. Her fingers gently pressed into his hair as she moved to rest her chin on top of his head. Saya’s body began to shake as the feeling only intensified.
“What?” Orochimaru asked her. Fatigue was beginning to catch up with him as he kept his eyes closed and lazily dropped his hands down to her waist.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Saya whispered as she fought against the stinging in her eyes. She combed through his hair once before forcing herself to smile. “I guess you did need to close the blinds after all.”
His breath hit her chest as the genuinely laughed at her comment, making Saya tiredly laugh along with him.
The two grew quiet again after that as they made their way upstairs. They both disrobed before getting into bed, and even though he still wouldn’t hold her as they fell asleep, Orochimaru let Saya lay close to him, facing each other as they fell asleep.
As happy as it made Saya to finally go to bed with him this way, that happiness didn’t carry over into her dreams.
Orochimaru was in her bed sleeping peacefully as he was then, but he alone. Saya watched from a dark corner in the room as two black figures broke through her bedroom window. Orochimaru was stirred from his sleep as the glass rained down on him, unable to move as the two figures ran to pin him to the bed. Each figure stood on either side of him, holding his hands down as a third figure appeared.
Orochimaru struggled as the dark figure drew a sword and pointed it to the man’s neck. A fourth fair of hands came from the darkness behind Orochimaru to pull his head back by his hair.
A flash then filled the room before everyone disappeared. Saya moved from the corner was standing, seeing that her bed was empty. It was then that a headless white snake fell lifeless from the ceiling and onto the empty place in her bed.
Saya jumped in her sleep as the snake landed in her dream, waking her with a panicked breath and sweat all over her body. Her eyes rapidly scanned the dark bedroom until they turned to Orochimaru beside her. He was groggy, but he raised his head up to look at her.
“Bad dream?” he asked sleepily.
Not knowing what to say at first, Saya just looked down at him. She drew her blanket up around her as her sweat began to chill her skin.
“People broke in through the window,” Saya started as she looked to the moonlight shining through. “They cut your head off with a sword. I think so anyway. There was a white snake with its head missing laying here where you were.”
Orochimaru still looked up at her visibly shaken expression. “It was just a dream,” he told her softly.
“But-”
“Saya,” Orochimaru interrupted her, “we earlier had a conversation about you putting a blade to my throat. Your subconscious is running wild, as are those two shots right before bed.”
Saya then watched as Orochimaru closed his eyes and rolled onto his back. It wasn’t just a dream to her; it was a warning. It wasn’t the first dream of Orochimaru she had seen come to life, and with Akira gone, it all seemed too real. Her pulse was still pounding in her ears as she sat there looking down at him.
Her body began to shake again as it had earlier in the night. Maybe her subconscious was getting the best of her, but for a different reason. She clutched at the blanket wrapped around her chest.
“I know where Akira is,” she finally told him.
Orochimaru chuckled as he still lay there with his eyes closed. “Saya, I’ve known that all along.”
Her eyes hardened as they looked down at the man. He did know after all, then. “How?” she finally asked with a slight edge to her voice.
“You would have been in hysterics if he truly went missing.” Orochimaru laughed to himself then. “Just because I don’t have a love as deep as the two of you share, it doesn’t make me ignorant.”
It wasn’t a physical slap to the face, but it may as well have been. Saya’s heart fell to the pit of her stomach as he looked away from him, her hands shaking as she tried to control herself.
“He had a plan he wanted to carry out,” she finally told him with a steady voice. “I didn’t agree to it, so I honestly was surprised to see that he was gone. Him going to Kabuto is what shocked me the most.”
“And what was his plan?” Orochimaru asked from behind her.
“He’s going to the Leaf Village,” Saya replied with defeat in her voice. “He wants to find one of the other sannin-”
“Tsunade,” Orochimaru almost growled as he finally sat up. “What does he want with her?”
Saya turned in the bed so that she was facing him. He was finally waking up and his eyes were beginning to fill with rage.
“A cure, for me,” Saya almost laughed. “He went from wanting to exchange information about your location to actually leading them to your location. I’m supposed to keep you here until he comes back. He even mentioned planning an ambush.”
“I think he got mad because I didn’t want to go along with it,” she continued. “I just didn’t think he would go behind my back to do it.”
“If that’s not what you want, why keep it from me?” Orochimaru’s eyes drilled into hers as they grew even more animalistic.
“Because I didn’t know what to do,” Saya whispered at him. “I thought maybe I could get you to leave soon, so that when they do show up you won’t be here. I could honestly say you had left and I didn’t know where you were.”
“Like you claimed with Akira,” Orochimaru rasped at her. “Only to break under the pressure in less than a day.”
“I’m telling you this because I’m scared for you,” Saya growled. “I don’t want to see anything happen to you. That’s why I told Akira no. It’s not me breaking under pressure or a drink making me lose control of my words, it’s concern.
“And don’t you dare sit in this bed and take another cheap shot at me. I know what I did earlier, and I did it was because I wanted to be with you. So I guess you’re right, maybe I don’t love him like I thought I did. I hope that makes so happy to finally hear.”
The room fell quiet then. Saya’s words hung heavy in the air as the two glared at each other, breathing hard until their nerves started to settle. Orochimaru finally broke the silence as he slowly blinked his eyes with a sigh.
“As soon as we wake in the morning, I need you to tell me everything,” he calmly told her. “Every detail he gave you before he left. We also need to come to an understanding before we move any further with this.”
Saya simply nodded her head at him, looking away as her eyes started to tear.
“Putting aside our situation, Saya, Akira had already committed an act of betrayal against me and against the Sound Village when he disappeared those years ago. Yesterday was another matter. But this, planning to align and lead an ambush alongside my enemy, this completely takes your control of his fate from your hands. Do you understand?”
Tears finally left Saya’s eyes then, but she nodded. It was out of her hands at this point. While Orochimaru had done some terrible things to the both of them, he had never gone as far as Akira was planning to do.
“I don’t want to see it happen, but I understand,” she said weakly. “I never thought it would come to this. I thought one of you would just give up and move on.”
“He did,” Orochimaru responded as he settled back into bed. “Now, go back to sleep.”
“I don’t think I can,” Saya whispered as she looked to the window. “Not now.”
“Try. Tomorrow won’t be easy.”
Saya turned her eyes back to Orochimaru. He simply lay there on his back with his eyes to the ceiling, looking none to at ease himself. Saya remembered her first night back with him at the compound, when Tetsuya burst into the room the morning after. He had instinctively drawn a blade that was hidden in his bed. Even then and there, he was prepared for an attacker.
They didn’t have that luxury now, save for the few Sound ninja that were supposedly watching her home. That did give her some comfort but not much. She then put her back to the window.
It earned her a questioning look, but Saya moved one of Orochimaru’s arms above him, giving her the freedom to slide over and close the space between them. It made the man tense, but he didn’t say a word as she laid both her hand and head on his chest.
Saya simply sighed against him. He did tell her to try to sleep, and in that moment nothing was more soothing to her than being close to him, to be able to touch him.
