Hitoshi escorted Sakura to a small room with a single cot bed, a small table, a single uncomfortable-looking chair and a set of five shelves hanging on one wall. The sum total of the medical "supplies" added up to little more than a first aid kit. "This is the medical office?" Sakura asked incredulously.
Hitoshi looked distinctly uncomfortable. "Well, Fushinji did say something about getting more supplies if they're needed."
Sakura scowled. "I would hope so. So, am I supposed to help people with my hands tied behind my back?" She raised one eyebrow at him.
He had the grace to blush and hurried around behind her. "No." He quickly untied her hands and she rubbed the feeling back into her wrists. He squirmed a moment as she considered him.
"You don't seem like the type of guy to be involved with something like this." Sakura leaned against the table while he struggled with a reply.
Finally, he said simply, "we do what we must." He contemplated a spot high on the wall for a moment before remembering himself. "He would like you to check over the la…women that are here currently. Please, follow me."
"One moment." She turned to the shelves and found a small medical flashlight. No stethoscope, very little else, but she could do some preliminary checking. This time she stepped into the hall and followed him voluntarily.
The halls looked mostly the same, all made of industrial gray concrete, bare red or gray brick and stark fluorescent lighting. The "medical office" was only two short halls from their destination. Hitoshi opened one half of a set of double doors and led Sakura inside.
This room was very large. It reminded Sakura of pictures she'd seen of the old open wards in the hospitals. There were two rows of beds, one on either side of the room. These beds were the same pathetic cots that were in her "medical office," thin, worn mattresses, most had a single blanket. One small lumpy pillow was on each bed.
Each bed had a single woman in it, all of them quiet. Some looked half-asleep, others, merely awake and seemingly uninterested. Sakura wondered if they were simply resigned to whatever might happen next. Each woman was tied by one arm to the bed they lay on.
Toward the front of the room, there were three beds separate from the rest. Tied to each of these was a girl barely old enough to have graduated from Konoha's academy. They were more alert than the others, but lay quietly on their beds, looking for all the world like they were trying to sink into the bed and be forgotten.
As Sakura looked over the women, she spotted Tenten toward the end of the first row. She glanced at Hitoshi, daring him to stop her and she walked down to Tenten's bed. She was tied like the rest and looked as if she was trying very hard to stay awake.
"Tenten?" Sakura approached and perched on the side of the bed.
Tenten struggled to sit up a little, but the rope made it difficult. She settled for leaning up on one arm. "Hi."
"Are you okay. Have they…?" She let the question hang.
"No. Though that guy tried. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't just give in. I kicked him." A ghost of a smile traced the edges of her mouth. "But then they forced me to drink something. I think it's like what they gave us before, but not as potent. I'm awake, but lethargic."
Sakura looked around and spotted Hitoshi still standing by the doorway. "I'll try to keep an eye on you, but I can't counteract the drugs right now. Not with him watching. Are you okay otherwise?"
Tenten nodded. "Yeah, just tired. I'm going to try to nap so I have my wits about me later."
Sakura looked her over a bit anyway, then stood. "I want to check the others out. Get some rest."
Sakura moved to the next bed and sat on the edge. "Hello. I'm Sakura. I'm going to check you over, okay?"
The woman nodded, but didn't move much. She seemed as lethargic as Tenten and Sakura guessed they kept them in that state so they wouldn't fight. Sakura used her flashlight to check her eyes, ears, and mouth, then inspected her for bruises or other problems. Finding none, she looked into the soft brown eyes. "I'd like to check your female parts. Do you mind?"
The woman just shrugged. Sakura sighed. She glanced up at Hitoshi and at a sharp look, he turned around and stared at the door. She eased the woman's pants down around her ankles and gently checked for bruising and damage. She seemed okay, but as Sakura touched her, she winced. She was apparently very tender.
Sakura sighed. There wasn't much she could do at the moment. There didn't appear to be any major damage, just evidence that she'd been used. Sakura helped her pull her pants back up, then covered her with the blankets.
She moved down one row and back up the next the same way. All of them had been used at one point or another and most were tender, but they didn't seem to have any major damage done to them. Physically, at least. Sakura couldn't begin to imagine the emotional damage they'd suffered.
She checked once more on Tenten, but she was asleep. Praying that she'd be okay, she approached Hitoshi. "They're fine, relatively speaking." She crossed her arms over her chest and stood staring at him.
He fidgeted a moment, then turned to the door and opened it. "You will be needed again in several hours. Please, get some rest in your office. I will bring you food."
He led her back to the medical office and she stepped inside. "I'm going to need more supplies."
Hitoshi nodded. "I will get some paper and pen for you. Please, rest." And with that, he was gone.
Sakura took a few minutes to inventory what she had and start a mental list of things she would probably need. If she was going to be needed later on, that could mean only one of two things. Either they were bringing in more or they would be used again.
Sakura took several deep breaths to try to calm herself down and she sat on the side of the bunk to wait. Hitoshi returned a short time later with a tray with tea and a bowl of rice and vegetables, along with a sheet of paper and a pen.
"You are to write down what you need and the Boss will see that you will get it." He started to bow to her before remembering himself and turned to leave.
"Thank you." She said quietly. He paused for a moment, his back still to her, nodded almost imperceptivity and left.
Sakura ate her food quickly after smelling it for drugs, then sipped her tea as she wrote out her list of supplies. Then, at a loss for what else to do, she took Hitoshi's advice, stretched out on the small cot and fell asleep for a bit.
* * *
She was shaken awake quite a while later. Still disoriented, she had no idea what time it was and, briefly, she didn't even know where she was. She blinked a few times, and saw Hitoshi standing over her. She struggled into a sitting position.
"You may be needed soon. I was told to wake you up." He stepped back away from her.
Sakura rubbed her face to help her wake up and looked up at him. "I need a bathroom."
He motioned toward the door and she stepped through it. "Down this way," he said as he turned left and walked down the hallway. About fifty meters along the corridor, he motioned to a door. "You may use this one."
Like the rest of this building, there were no windows, just bare brick and cement floors. There was a dirty sink in one corner and a toilet that had seen better days in another. She shut the door on Hitoshi and did what she had to quickly. She took a minute to wash her face and try to gather her waning courage.
She opened the door and followed Hitoshi back to the medical office. There, on the table was a box. When she looked inside, the medical supplies she'd requested were there. "Well, I'm not sure I actually expected to get them."
"The Boss doesn't want any real harm to come to them." Hitoshi's answer was met with a snort.
"You mean he cares about his profit." She glared over her shoulder at him as she put the things onto the shelf. He didn't try to answer her.
"I want to see my friend." She set the empty box on the floor under the table and turned back to him.
"She is not here."
"WHAT?" Sakura practically shouted.
"Shhh!" Hitoshi made shooing motions with his hands. "Please. She will be back later, but she is not here right now."
"And where, pray tell, is she?" Sakura had to fight every instinct she had to beat him to a pulp then go racing through the building to look for her. She'd been asleep - asleep - and Tenten was having…she couldn't allow herself to think about what Tenten might be going through. Entirely aside from that, she had no idea how large the building was or how convoluted the passageways were. She closed her eyes and counted slowly to ten.
"She was taken out for inspection." Hitoshi spoke hesitantly, as if sensing just how dangerous Sakura could really be.
"Inspection?" She tried to even her breathing. That didn't sound too bad.
"Yes. There are a couple of buyers here this evening to look over the stock." Sakura peered at Hitoshi and saw the white lines around his mouth. He was not as calm about this as he let on.
Still, she couldn't suppress the snort at 'stock.' "And then what?"
"Some of them will be chosen to stay for the buyers' entertainment. The rest will return here." Hitoshi looked more and more uncomfortable as the conversation continued. "I am not supposed to tell you this much. I was to wake you and get you a plate of food. Please, Sakura-s…" he paused, but Sakura caught the beginning of the honorific.
"Do what you're supposed to. Let me know as soon as they get back, please?"
Hitoshi nodded and made his escape.
