“Sakura!”
‘Not now,’ she thought desperately, ‘please not now, any time but right now!’
Sakura dutifully turned to meet the man who’d just hailed her, attempting to find the patience to deal with him. “Sasuke.”
He was beside her almost instantly. “I haven’t seen you in days.”
“I know,” she replied, “that was the point.” She realized that her voice had an edge to it; she grimaced, taking a deep breath. “Sorry.”
Sasuke shrugged indifferently. His dark eyes scanned the street, though his hand discretely took hers. “I’ve missed you.”
‘What do I say to that? ‘I’ve missed you too?’ That would be misleading. But saying I haven’t would hurt his feelings whether he admits it or not,’ she argued with herself. ‘You’re going to hurt him regardless, so just do it quickly.’
“Sasuke,” she started. Sakura turned to him, her heart hurting as she lost herself in the depths of his eyes. “I’ve missed you too.”
‘Shit! What am I saying!? That’s not what I mean! I mean… damn it!’
His cool palm cupped her cheek, sending a shiver through her. He leaned down, his lips about to meet hers.
“Sasuke,” she whispered, her tone gentle but firm. He pulled away, his obsidian gaze meeting hers.
He stared at her long moments before whispering, “I see.”
“Sasuke,” she said, hating herself for the tears that began to running down her cheeks, but helpless to stop them, “I love you! I really do! I always have, and I always will, but I-”
Sasuke put his hand up, silencing her. He nodded and then suddenly disappeared, leaving her standing alone.
‘Figures,’ she thought bitterly, wiping her cheeks, ‘he would handle it about as well as he handles everything, which is not at all.’
As much as she wanted to explain herself, he eliminated the option, and though there were only so many places Sasuke would go, and she could easily locate him if she truly wanted to, there was something more important that she needed to do.

Neji stood on the bridge, looking down into the water. He’d been staring into the river for hours, lost in deep thoughts of meditation which gave him a sense of peace despite all the turmoil he felt in his life.
Sensing an approaching presence, he turned to greet the intruder. He was shocked to see Sakura standing in front of him, looking disheveled, winded, and ‘God, she’s absolutely breathtaking,’ in the moonlight.
He watched a myriad of emotions cross her face. She lurched forward, as though she were about to throw her arms around him, and then suddenly thought better of it, halting in place. Her lips parted and then closed.
Neji was aware of his heart pounding in his chest, the rush of his pulse thudding in his ears. He tried to maintain calm patience, waiting for her to speak, though he was anything but.
“Hi,” she finally said. She bit her lower lip, looking away, and then lifted her eyes to meet his.
Neji nodded, retaining his composure but silently begging for her to continue. “Hello.” Sakura’s eyes widened at the formal use of the greeting. ‘Shit,’ he thought, regretting it immediately. He quickly continued, “It’s been a while.” ‘That was even better. Way to go.’
“I… um…” she stammered, “well, I wanted to… get perspective, you see, and… well…”
Sakura couldn’t contain herself any longer. She threw herself into Neji’s arms, clinging to him tightly as the words tumbled free, “Oh, Neji! There was never anything to think about and I was just so stupid to even think there was and I know that I’ve made mistakes, and so have you, but I just… I love you so much and you’re all that I want and I’m just so sorry that I-”
“Sakura,” he said gently. She lifted her big green eyes to meet his, filling Neji with more happiness than he had ever known. He cupped her cheek in his palm, leaned down and kissed her.
Sakura’s arms slid around his neck as she responded. Neji deepened the kiss, tangling his fingers into her short hair with one hand, the other wrapped around her waist pulling her as tightly to him as he could.
His heart hammered in his chest; he felt as though he were soaring, being lifted higher and higher to the heavens and nothing would ever pull him down-
“Neji, I love you,” she whispered into his ear.
-except his need for her. “And I you, Sakura,” he replied, surprised at his own calmness. He wrapped her tightly in his arms, his hands quickly flying through seals; they vanished.

Sakura quickly unlocked the door, throwing it open, tossing the key wherever it landed, and throwing her arms once more around Neji as he entered behind her, slipping off his shoes.
She made quick work of his yukata, pulling the offending material off, letting it fall where it would. Neji likewise removed her shirt and bra, unclasping her skirt and tugging down her shorts as they stumbled blindly down the hall towards her bedroom.
Neji kissed her deeply as she lifted her leg, undoing the leather guard behind her, holding onto him for balance, without breaking contact with his lips. She likewise removed the other one, slipping off her shoes as she pulled down his hakama, both finally nude.
Sakura lay back on the bed, propping herself up on her elbows. With the grace of a cat, Neji slid over her, kissing first her lips before trailing his way down her body. He nipped at her clavicle, rained attention on her pert breasts, trailing kisses down to her toes and back up her legs before reaching her center.
“Neji…” she whispered, her eyes wide. He watched Sakura as he lowered his head, losing himself in a tangle of pink curls, his tongue lightly flicking over the bundle of nerves he sought, making Sakura to jerk away in tickled surprise.
She giggled, gripping his shoulders and trying to push him away, but Neji wouldn’t allow it. He slowly ran his tongue over her sensitive clitoris, causing her to melt into the mattress, unable to suppress a moan.
Neji smirked, licking her hot folds as he slipped a finger in, timing his movements with his tongue. With his free hand, Neji reached up, caressing a breast, rolling her nipple between his fingers until it stood erect.
“Oh… Neji…” Sakura mumbled, unable to keep the words from tumbling free, “God…” She closed her eyes, writhing, unable to escape Neji’s expert onslaught and not wanting to; the sensations he was producing were too incredible.
She started to feel a familiar burning in her abdomen, knowing this would be a mind-blowing orgasm. “Neji…” she whispered, just reaching her brink.
Neji suddenly stopped, withdrawing his hands and pulling away.
“What?” Sakura cried, her eyes shooting open, looking at Neji in furious indignation. “Why? I can’t believe you just-”
Neji raised an eyebrow. “I’m not finished with you yet.”
Sakura was too shocked to say anything more. She stared at him in wide-eyed surprise as he lay down beside her, running his fingertips lightly over her stomach and chest for several minutes. He watched her as he kissed her shoulder, trailing his lips up her neck, finally finding her own and kissing her.
Sakura found herself prisoner to the incredible sensations Neji produced within her. She wrapped her arms around him, holding him to her fiercely as she deepened the kiss. A second later he was atop her, and then he was in her, moving quickly, gracefully.
He pulled back, staring into her deep green eyes. This was heaven. This was home. “Sakura…” he whispered.
She smiled up at him. Neji was everything she had ever wanted or could ever want, and after everything they had been through, everything they had put each other through, that he could still say her name so tenderly brought tears to her eyes.
“Neji,” she cried, clinging to him desperately as he drove further into her with each thrust.
Sakura felt her climax building a second time, and again was denied when Neji suddenly stopped, still within her, pausing long moments. Her hand immediately cupped his cheek. “Are you alright?” she asked, this time concerned.
He simply smiled and nodded, palming her cheek and capturing her lips in a gentle kiss, supporting his weight with his other arm. He waited several moments before quickly pulling his hand away, and without breaking the kiss, suddenly plunging into her once more.
Sakura’s nails dug into his shoulders as she cried out in surprise. His quickened his pace until he could go no faster, driving into her as Sakura’s hands danced over his body, gripping his arms, his ass, anything and everything she could.
Neji could sense the fire building within her, knowing he too was about to reach his own end. He thrust with as much force as he could, feeling Sakura begin to clench around him, sending him over his edge.
Sakura cried out as she was assailed with the most intense orgasm of her life, literally seeing white lights as she rode out the waves of their union. As the sensations subsided, Sakura refocused her eyes to see Neji staring at her, his own eyes full of love for her.
“Wow…” she whispered.
He smiled, “Yeah. Wow.” He withdrew, lying down beside her. Sakura immediately curled up against him, resting her head on his shoulder as she threw her leg over his and wrapped her arm possessively around his chest.
After several long moments, she propped herself up to look at him and said, “Neji…”
“Hm?” he replied, staring at her contentedly.
“I love you.”
Neji realized he would never tire of hearing her say that, that those three words would never lose meaning for him or become routine. He would love her with his very last breath and even beyond. Staring into her eyes, he realized, for the first time, that she’d felt this way all along, that she had loved him all along, and that nothing would ever change that now.
“And I you, Sakura,” he said, drawing her down to him again, content to feel her heart beating against his own.

“So you chose Neji.”
Sakura sat talking with Naruto in Ichiraku’s two days later, watching him slurp a third helping of ramen. She smiled, “I chose Neji.”
“Happy?”
“Yes,” she sighed, “although I don’t know that Sasuke will ever speak to me again.”
Naruto shook his head, “He just needs time. I don’t think he’s ever been rejected by anyone in his life, and he’s still got a lot of issues that need dealing with.”
“I know… it’s just-”
“It just sucks because you care,” Naruto replied, saying, “You’re not responsible for his happiness, Sakura-chan. And he’s not going to be happy unless he chooses to be, which he hasn’t. He’s a miserable, brooding, bitchy little bastard and that’s his problem, and he needs to get over it.”
“You always do that!” Sakura said, nearly knocking her bowl over with her arm. “You can’t just… well, trying to change how someone feels… Naruto, you…” she was running out of steam, realizing the lack of logic in her argument, and the fact that even if she had logic, it wouldn’t matter with Naruto anyway. “Well…” she sighed, “it’s not going to be that easy…”
“Yeah,” Naruto replied with a grin, “it will.” He tossed money on the counter for both meals, nodding thanks to the old man as he led Sakura out into the street. “Besides, if we can forgive him for all the shit he’s pulled, he can get over you dumping his pathetic ass.”
“I’d hate to see what you say about me when I’m not around,” Sakura said with a laugh, Naruto already lifting her spirits.
“Nah, you’re my favorite person ever, Sakura-chan. It’s impossible for me to say un-nice things about you.”
“Well that’s good to know.”
Naruto’s eyes darted for a moment, before finding hers again. “I need to get going though.”
“Um, okay…” she replied uncertainly, “if something’s come up…”
“How about I’ll meet up with you later tonight. That sound good?” he asked in a rush.
“Sure,” Sakura nodded. Naruto gave her a quick peck on the cheek before dashing off.
Sakura turned, about to head home now that she suddenly found she had the afternoon free, but froze upon seeing her dark haired teammate approaching. His eyes locked with hers as he continued to approach. “Sasuke.”
“Sakura,” he said. “Naruto said you’d be here.”
“I see,” she said. ‘So that’s why Naruto suddenly took off. He set this up.’ She realized she felt both relieved that he’d sought her out yet also apprehensive. ‘Is this the end then?’
“We need to-”
“-talk,” she finished. “Yeah.”
“Come,” Sasuke said quietly, walking ahead, fully expecting Sakura to follow, which she did.
Sakura walked silently beside him through the village until seeing the red bridge he was heading towards. She was about to say something, but Sasuke cut her off. “This was our place first.”
“What?” she asked, caught completely off guard.
“The bridge. It’s our place. Team Seven. Anything afterwards, it doesn’t matter. This is our place first.”
“Okay…” she replied, unsure of the point of his diatribe.
She realized his eyes were fixated everywhere but on her. “You’re happy?” he asked.
“Yes,” Sakura whispered.
He lifted his gaze to meet hers. “I meant what I said. I won’t stand in the way.”
Sakura’s voice caught in her throat, her ‘thank you’ silent on her lips.
“We’re okay,” he said, his eyes piercing her own, “you and I.”
Sakura could feel the familiar burn of tears in her eyes, and bit back her usual impulse of throwing her arms around him affectionately. Given the nature of the situation, it would seem unfair, or hurtful, ‘because despite what he says, I’m sure he’s ups-’
Her train of thought ended when she felt herself pulled against him. She tentatively wrapped her own arms around him to complete their embrace. “Sakura,” he whispered into her ear, “we’re okay.”
She was suddenly able to let go of her inhibition, trusting Sasuke. Her tears finally spilled over. “Thank you.”
And none of it seemed to matter anymore. She knew that her relationship with Sasuke would be okay, that things would never be the same again, but had the potential to become something even better. She stayed in his embrace long moments, before some part of her realized that she had to walk away, symbolically ending what was and no longer could be. She leaned up, whispering in his ear, “I will always love you, Sasuke.”
She felt his arms squeeze around her, and then she pulled back. Her eyes searched his for but a moment and then she pulled away altogether. “I’ll see you tomorrow then,” she said casually.
“Hn,” came his stoic reply. She tore herself away from his dark-eyed gaze.
‘Neji.’ He was all she could think about. The nightmare had finally ended. She had Naruto back, her best friend in all the world. Sasuke had finally come home, and for all the conflicts he’d caused, she was happy he was home with them where he belonged. And now Neji, the man who’d been there for her through it all, even though she hadn’t realized it.
She didn’t feel like going home as it would feel tiny and enclosing; she needed an open space, somewhere to clear her head. She decided to go to her own little training area, the one she’d first really ‘met’ Neji in. So few people went there, and it was a good place to think which was what she needed more than anything else.
Sakura pulled out a few kunai, inhaling deeply in preparation when she sensed another presence. She threw a kunai with deadly precision, unsurprised when it came out dangling on the finger of the intruder.
“Your aim has gotten even better,” Neji smirked.
“Well, I try,” Sakura said nonchalantly, smiling as he approached. He reached down, unsnapping her holster and sliding the kunai back into its proper place against her thigh.
“You succeed.”
Sakura could feel her heart beating just a little faster at the sight of him, his hand against her leg, his other slipping around her waist. In that moment, nothing else in the world could have possibly mattered. Sakura slid her hand up behind Neji’s neck, pulling him to her, kissing him. “I’m in love with you, Hyuuga Neji,” she whispered.
Neji pulled back, his light eyes searching hers. “Marry me.”
Sakura knew she ought to feel surprised, caught off guard, but she wasn’t. She continued staring into Neji’s deep white eyes, and said the only thing she could. “Yes.”
And for the first time in either of their lives, it was as simple as that.
