-----------Just after sunset----------
Naruto shifted a bit and yawned hugely, his face almost splitting in half. Blearily his eyes blinked open, looking right at Sasuke's face. His brain was still too sleep-foggy to realize he'd scooted closer to Sasuke during the day or that at some point he'd grabbed Sasuke's hands, lacing their fingers together. All he knew was that he felt sleepy and wonderfully content.
Sasuke's hands, by that point, were already gaining warmth again and his eyes opened slowly, as usual before he could see, but as his vision slowly came into focus, he smiled a little, sleepy and unguarded. Naruto’s hands in his own, the boy's scent and presence enveloping him in a cocoon of serenity and contentment.... life couldn't get any better then this... not even un-life like his own.
Naruto automatically smiled back before yawning again. Life was very good at the moment. His eyes slipping closed again he shifted a little closer and settled again, ready to doze for a few more minutes. He'd wake up when the happy fog that surrounded his brain dispersed.
More awake now, Sasuke scooted a little closer and tilted his forehead to Naruto's. He, like Naruto, had removed his hitai-ate for sleep and now warm forehead rested against warm forehead bangs mingling and sprawling. Closing his own eyes again, Sasuke inhaled deeply the one scent that could save his sanity or drive him through it to madness. His hands tightened slightly in Naruto's.
The corners of Naruto's mouth turned up slightly as he squeezed back and tugged him closer still. Certainly not anywhere near awake he moved his head just enough to lightly rub noses with Sasuke, his brain registering only Sasuke's presence and closeness. “Hi, Sasuke...” he whispered, his breath ghosting along Sasuke's mouth and chin.
“Hi...” Sasuke murmured back, a very genuine smile turning up the corners of his own mouth as Naruto rubbed noses with him. Deciding he would take a small chance - since they'd have to get up, eat, spar and then get moving again soon anyway so it wouldn't matter too much if he ruined the moment - the Uchiha tipped his head a tiny bit and brushed his lips over Naruto's caressingly.
A quiet, sleepy purr rumbled in Naruto's throat as he kissed Sasuke lightly in return, much too muzzy-brained to even question his actions. Lazy blue eyes cracked open and he nuzzled a bit at Sasuke's cheek, his sleepiness making him that much cuddlier. Never in his childhood had he ever had the chance to be remotely affectionate with anyone and now that he had someone who was more than willing to reciprocate his gestures he wasn't going to let a single moment go to waste.
Happily, Sasuke extracted a hand from one of Naruto's and wrapped his arm around Naruto's body pulling them snugly together over the remainder of the small distance that had still separated them. “We have to get up ... soon,” he added, though he really didn't want to.
“Says you,” Naruto murmured, his voice thick with sleep, and licked Sasuke's cheek teasingly. At the moment he would much rather just lay there and cuddle. His free arm wriggled out from between them to embrace Sasuke back. Nope, he wasn't getting up anytime soon.
The lick on his cheek made him shiver and he mentally retracted that statement. Itachi wasn't yet a pressing matter... he could wait a few hours longer. “Mmm.... I take it back...” he whispered in that bedroom voice.
“Good,” Naruto purred, coming more awake with each passing moment. And most definitely liking what he was waking up to. He pressed a kiss to Sasuke’s cheek... and blew a raspberry, just to see if he could get him to squeal.
All he got was a start of surprise and an annoyed growl. “Naruto...”
“Yes?” Naruto asked sweetly with a fox-grin. It was so much fun to tease Sasuke.
“That was... it spoiled the moment. Baka,” he muttered and sat up pulling his legs to him and sitting cross-legged his arms draped over his knees.
“You big baby,” Naruto taunted, reaching out to grab Sasuke's arm and pull him down again. “Come back here.”
His tug met only resistance. Sometimes Sasuke was thankful for his choice in hairstyle. Like right now, since his bangs hung about his face in a manner that didn't allow Naruto to see his expression and the smirk on his lips. Silence was the only thing that met Naruto's slight exasperation.
“Well fine, be a jackass,” Naruto muttered as he let go to snuggle deeper into his bedroll and shut his eyes, still not ready to get up.
And that's when it hit him. Sasuke that is, pouncing on Naruto like a cat pounces on a feather toy wriggling in front of it. Sasuke's hands caught Naruto's exposed sides and tickled for all he was worth. He'd seen this done before by other people of varying degrees of closeness to one another... but never actually participated before... or at least not in his memory. It had always looked like fun... and now he had the chance to try it.
“WAH!!!” Now very much awake Naruto squirmed and wriggled as he tried to get free. Where in hell had that come from?! He was soon breathless and had tears streaming down his face as he racked with silent laughter, not enough air in his lungs to do much more than squeak.
Having gained much enjoyment from that, Sasuke retreated to the entrance of the cave when he finished tickling the poor boy to near suffocation and then turned to look at him, a triumphant look in his dark eyes. There was only enough light left by the embers of the fire to illuminate a very little bit of each of them. However, due to both of their enhanced eyesight it wasn't hard to see one another. “I'm going out to hunt... stay safe...” he said and then turned to go.
Naruto just lay there panting, trying to grasp the fact that Sasuke had just... tickle attacked him!! That wasn't normal. “Itai...” he winced as he sat up a moment later and his sore-from-laughing ribs twinged. “I am so getting him back for that... Sauske you bastard.” But he was smirking. Now that he was fully awake Naruto dug out a ration bar from his pack for breakfast before pulling his clothes on and heading outside to warm up. Unfortunately his physical strength was not one of the things Kyuubi’s power added to and he had to improve that solely by hard work. and now he had to regain a good year's worth of muscle as soon as possible so he could take out Itachi. Naruto was soon not a very happy fox-boy as he tested his muscles.
Sasuke returned after a short while, his hunger assuaged but far from sated. Animal blood was just never as filling as human, and so six rabbits, two deer and a gopher later, he still wasn't very full. Still, he had to make do. They needed to stay as far away from the other towns and villages as possible if they were to remain unknown by Itachi. Sasuke crouched in a tree silently watching Naruto shadow spar and stretch and run through katas. For all that everyone complained about him, he was actually a very disciplined youth. Sasuke smirked. If the village had only noticed him sooner, how much more powerful would he have been? Or would he have been weaker for not having had to fight for every scrap of anything he ever got?
Naruto could feel Sasuke watching him and so after a moment he paused and crossed him arms, looking in the other boy's general direction. “Are you just going to sit there or are you going to come down here and help me?” he called.
Dropping to the ground on all fours Sasuke looked up at Naruto for a moment and then straightened taking one of those classic 'Come At Me' stances. “I suppose since I promised...” he teased, but his face was straight, making it more of a challenging tease than a taunt.
“One of these days, Sasuke, that smug bastard attitude of yours is gonna get you in a lot of trouble,” Naruto smirked as he crouched, examining his teammate's stance for openings and weaknesses. Quick as lightning he went from still to throwing punches, aiming for even the tiniest openings in Sasuke's defense. He wouldn't use Jutsus unless he had to - this practice was all about getting his strength back. He could work on Jutsus while they traveled.
Sasuke had little trouble blocking and parrying Naruto's attempts to actually hit him. He wasn't using his superhuman abilities either, it was just that Naruto had so much to gain back that Sasuke held back any massive fighting strength. He showed only enough to make Naruto work enough to pant and sweat and that was it.
Eventually Naruto had to slow down gradually, his body screaming at him and begging him to stop completely, but he knew if he did that everything would seize up and he wouldn't be able to move at all for awhile. He didn't stop moving until he collapsed by the remains of last night's fire, coaxing it to life so he could eat something hot. Breathing hard he used the hem of his shirt to wipe off his face.
Sasuke settled next to the blond, coming to rest on his knees. Naruto looked so.... so tasty sitting there with his shirt hiked up to wipe his face exposing re-toning abs and smooth tanned skin. The Seal was visible at the moment for his expenditure of energy in practice. Unable to resist Sasuke leaned forward and licked one stray bead of sweat from Naruto's temple, tasting salt and Naruto. To him it was ambrosia.
The fox-boy didn't even have the energy to start in surprise. He just glanced sideways at Sasuke and shoved him away by putting his hand over Sasuke's face. “Ecchi,” he taunted with a tired smirk. Setting some water to boil he dug out a few packets of ramen. Once he had the food in his stomach he'd feel a lot better.
All he received was a soft chuckle and then Sasuke stretched and leaned back on his elbows sticking his legs straight out in front of him. He idly watched Naruto making the ramen and quietly thanked whatever Powers That Be that he and Naruto were getting a second chance. Or was it their third or fourth? He had forgotten to be honest. He was just glad for another one and very glad that this time they had the opportunity to try and make things right between them.
Naruto ate slowly, lost in thought. When he finished he set his bowl down and pulled his necklace out of his shirt, looking at it thoughtfully. The stone shone in the firelight.
Hooded eyes opened the rest of the way, though they maintained their sleepy appearance. “What's that?” he asked softly.
“Tsunade-baa-chan gave it to me... a long time ago,” Naruto murmured absentmindedly, his thumb stroking the stone. “She bet I couldn't master the Rasengan in a week and I did. This was the First Hokage's, her grandfather, before it was hers... Supposedly it only recognizes Hokages... and I haven't died yet in almost seven years...” Sighing he fisted the jewel and rested his forehead on his fist.
Sasuke sat up straight slowly and drew his legs into a crossed position. “Isn't that what you want? To be recognized as a Hokage someday?” he asked gently.
“I'm already almost twenty and I'm only a Chuunin...” Naruto said, his voice thick with frustration. When he opened his eyes they were troubled and unsure. “It doesn't help that the village still refuses to see past the demon I hold... They would never want me for their leader... and a future Hokage would never fall so easily to his enemies,” he grit out bitterly, remembering his capture by Itachi.
“Naruto...” he began, a little surprised at the uncertainty he saw in his best friend's eyes. It was very unlike Naruto to show his uncertain side. “Naruto, you're still only nineteen. Sometimes we of the present and those of the future aren't meant to measure up to those of past.... each ninja has his own path to walk and no two paths are truly the same.” He couldn't help but think of what life would have been like if he had had someone to tell him these things when he'd been unsure or so set on being like Itachi, jealous because Itachi was ‘his father's son’ and that was never said of him. Sasuke reached out and pulled Naruto to him, careful to mind any resistance. “You are now exactly as you should be in this moment. Otherwise it would be different.”
Naruto didn't resist Sasuke's pull, resting his head on the other's shoulder and soaking in his friendship. “I guess... but it's still annoying as hell,” he pouted before sighing again. “All I want is for them to acknowledge that I'm me, not Kyuubi... That's not too much to ask, is it?” he asked wistfully.
“Not at all. The difference is obvious. They're just afraid of what they don't understand and they don't understand the difference between holding the demon and being the demon.” Sasuke rested his chin on Naruto's head, holding him close. “Godaime Hokage recognizes you as a potential Hokage. Kakashi-sensei recognizes you, and so do the other Jounin from our first Chuunin exam. I recognize you... Sakura recognizes you. Your peers recognize you. They don't all know you have the demon in you but they see you as a powerful friend and ally.”
“Who are you and what have you done with Sasuke?” Naruto asked teasingly with a poke to the ribs. The old Sasuke would never have been so supportive of him, and it was a welcome change. And fodder for teasing. Naruto could never pass up fodder for teasing. “Give him back,” he demanded as he continued to poke.
Suppressing the urge to jump at every prod Sasuke merely said, “A really old leech sucked him dry and then put this one in his place. Sorry. No refunds…” as stoically as he possibly could.
Naruto blinked audibly and looked up at him... before doubling up and dying of laughter. That was absolutely priceless!
The faintest of smirks turned up the corner of Sasuke's mouth as he asked “What? It's not a laughing matter. You are absolutely stuck with this one. Forever. Literally.”
::I know. And I couldn't ask for anything more wonderful.:: Once Naruto could breathe again he just leaned on Sasuke's shoulder with a content sigh, feeling infinitely better. He never could stay down and out for long. “So... are we going to travel any tonight or not?” he asked quietly, not really ready to move yet.
I think... that we can take a little time out for you for now. I want you healthy and ready to take Kisame down before we actually go and challenge them. I don't want any of our usual close calls,” he answered as he wrapped his arm around Naruto happily. He couldn't believe they were sitting there, like this. He was almost tempted to believe it was a dream.
“Close calls? You mean like the times where you almost wet your pants 'cause I did something really cool in a fight?” Naruto taunted with a smirk. “I remember the look on your face when I summoned Gamabunta in front of you. I swear you needed a change of underwear,” he sniggered.
This time Sasuke retaliated. He pinched Naruto's arm where his hand rested and growled. “How would you have felt if you had been in my shoes... if our roles of that time had been reversed? Remember we used to really fight some of the time back then.”
“I would have stared at you and then begged for you to teach me,” Naruto shot back, poking Sasuke's nose in retaliation for the pinch. “Or gone to Kakashi-sensei and beg him to teach me after copying you.”
Sasuke sighed. “I wasn't able to copy anything at that point. If you'll remember I was barely able to stand. And I didn't believe in begging back then anyway. I wasn't exactly myself. Not all the time anyway.”
“You were yourself right then,” Naruto argued, settling more comfortably against Sasuke. “You were bent on protecting me and Sakura, telling me to rescue her and run away while you distracted Gaara. That was one of your best moments, even if you couldn't really do much of anything.”
There was a moment of silence and then Sasuke spoke softly. “I was myself...” he admitted. “The me that wanted nothing more in the world than to have friends and be a friend and love and be loved again... I wanted to protect the people I thought might understand me...” ::But no one really understands me... they can't. Not without experiencing that day...::
“And yet you never let anyone understand you,” Naruto pointed out quietly, his voice holding a hint of sadness. “I kept trying but you never let anyone close enough to even begin to understand you...”
“I.... was afraid. I could only ever think of the pain I'd felt when close ties were ripped away from me... That day... will always haunt me. No matter what happens. I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced that kind of loss, on that large of a scale, could ever truly understand. And it wasn't just the loss... It was my brother's betrayal and his words on top of the deaths of my parents and outer family...”
“Then tell me, so I can understand,” Naruto requested gently as his arm wrapped around Sasuke's waist in a gesture of support. “You have to let it out before you can begin to heal... That's what Iruka-sensei always told me.”
An audible swallow followed Naruto's statement, but then Sasuke let out a long breath. He could do something a little more intense than that... it would mostly involve his Empathy, but he could use a touch of Telepathy to make it that much clearer. Naruto couldn't possible understand or recognize something that wasn't a Jutsu of some kind. “I don't know.... How much do you want to know? I mean how badly do you want to know where I'm coming from?”
“I want to know everything... I want to understand you, Sasuke,” Naruto said honestly, lifting his head from Sasuke's shoulder to meet his gaze. “But if you don't want to tell me it's okay. I can wait.”
“No... Actually, I want to... show you. It's hard to explain, but I need you to trust me for this...” he waited for the rejection, the retreat he was anticipating and yet still held Naruto's gaze steadily, his eyes honest.
“Show me? How?” Naruto was curious and it showed in the way his eyes narrowed to fox-slits.
“The trick I did before only different. Remember when I threw you backwards without touching you?”
“Kinda hard to forget,” Naruto smirked.
“That was my mind touching your body, or actually the force of it. I wanted you to slide away from me so my mind gave you a physical push. I have the ability to read you emotions in the same way only you don't feel me doing it.” He stopped and gazed at the blond for a minute. “Did you understand that?” he asked after a second.
“Yep. ...I think...”
Satisfied that Naruto at least understood the very basics, Sasuke nodded and continued, “What I want to do.... is share how that night with you... It might get intense though, so if you ever want to just back out all you have to do is think it hard enough. You can pull out any time...” he stopped again and watched the blond to see what he would decide. To try it or not?
Naruto thought about it for a moment before nodding firmly. “Okay, go ahead.” ::I trust you... at least, I trust you enough for this...::
Another moment's pause and then Sasuke pulled Naruto closer to him and settled the blond's head under his chin. Then very slowly, Sasuke opened himself to Naruto, reaching for the fox-boy's mind and emotions at once and channeled cautiously his thoughts and feelings, his experiences and memories of that whole day, of everything that led up to that day even. Sasuke shared his love for his family, his admiration of his brother and his terrible, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching fear that horrible evening. He let Itachi's words whisper into Naruto's mind careful not to let them leave residue from Sasuke's memory on the boy's mind. The last thing Sasuke wanted was competition for killing Itachi. When it was over he very slowly took down the rapport between them and let his hold on Naruto loosen. Warily he opened his eyes and waited.
Naruto's fingers were tangled tightly in Sasuke's shirt, his knuckles white as he tried not to shake at all the emotions running through him. He wanted to weep at the pain Sasuke had felt at the death of his family, wanted to tear Itachi's heart out from his living body at the torment he had caused his brother, wanted to hold Sasuke close and tell him it was all going to be alright in the end, wanted... he wanted to make sure that Sasuke was never alone again. He understood now why Sasuke had pushed everyone away... understood why he'd tried to kill him... At that moment Naruto felt like he could bear any pain Sauske dealt him because now he understood and would always be there for him... because Naruto understood loneliness more than anything else and would never let anyone be condemned to a lifetime of it.
He let it all sink in the rest of the way, let the newness of the experience fade a little, before he finally inquired in a very soft voice, “Naruto?” He could feel the hand fisted in his shirt and he could feel the faintest of tremors from the body in his arms. It caused him to hold Naruto a little tighter and he nuzzled the blond's head, wondering if Naruto found the experience distasteful or too much to deal with at once. Certainly Sasuke himself hadn't had the choice, but perhaps it would have been better to take it slower than he had with the blond.
Suddenly Naruto stood up and started shoving things back into his pack. “Get up. We're moving,” he ordered. He wanted to find Itachi as soon as possible to deliver the punishment the bastard deserved.
On his feet in an instant Sasuke caught Naruto's hands up and pulled them away from sloppily packing up the bag. “Naruto!” he exclaimed very softly trying to get the boy's attention. “It's fine... We wouldn't make it very far today anyway... and we're not even sure how far we're going... just relax. It's alright,” he soothed and tried to look into Naruto's eyes. “I'm sorry... I didn't mean to upset you like this...”
“How can we relax when that bastard is out there?!” Naruto yelled, his eyes determined and defiant. “He deserves to die for what he did to you!! Nobody should have to go through what you did!! Nobody!!!”
Wide stunned eyes stared fixedly at Naruto for several long seconds as the blond panted slightly in front of him worked up over everything he'd just felt and seen from Sasuke. Sasuke shook his shock off a little and tugged on Naruto's wrists, pulling the blond close until he held Naruto's hands to his chest. Then slowly he leaned down until his lips brushed Naruto's, before whispering, “Thank you...” softly against Naruto's lips.
“For what...?” Naruto murmured back, surprised as he always was whenever Sasuke thanked him or apologized to him. He shivered lightly at the feel of Sasuke's lips against his own - it never failed to set fire to his nerves.
“For being the only person in the world who really understands me... who wanted to understand me...” he breathed against Naruto's lips and let the words themselves be the softest of kisses so that Naruto could feel them as well as hear them. His hands gently squeezed the hands that he was clutching to his chest, in a small show of physical emphasis to his words.
“Oh...” Naruto whispered before giving in to his desire and outright kissing Sasuke, making it as tender and sweet as he could. His hands wriggled free from Sasuke's to slide towards his spine and tangle in the cloth there, pulling Sasuke closer.
Heaven. It was the only word Sasuke could think of to describe Naruto's taste, touch and the emotion he put into everything he ever did. Soft lips caressed his own gently and Sasuke's lips brushed back lightly. His arms, now freed of the other young man's hands, slid around to Naruto's back so that one could cup the back of Naruto's neck as the other looped about the blond's waist.
Purring lightly Naruto deepened the kiss as his hands began to trek up and down Sasuke's back, kneading every inch of flesh into warm submission. Bliss covered his brain in fog, the outside world disappearing to leave only himself and Sasuke. Every place where they came in contact it felt as if someone had lit a fire under his skin and it was slowly growing into a wildfire that completely enveloped him.
The whole scene was too surreal, Sasuke thought momentarily, though it was disjointed with pleasure. Naruto's hands on his back made him moan softly as every muscle bundle there tensed and then relaxed completely. His senses narrowed focusing on Naruto, and Naruto alone as his own fingertips began to explore the broad expanse of skin covered muscle beneath the boy's usual black shirt that he wore beneath the orange jacket.
Just then Sasuke managed to find one of Naruto's ticklish spots and he laughed into the kiss, squirming a bit to get away from Sasuke's questing fingers.
The giggle made Sasuke chuckle a little effectively ruining the kiss the rest of the way, but somehow Sasuke wasn't overly upset by it. He simply stopped moving his fingers and pulled a very small distance away to look into Naruto's big blue eyes.
Naruto gave him a sheepish fox-grin, a light blush dusting his cheeks.
Unable to resist the urge Sasuke licked Naruto's bottom lip lightly. “You taste like ramen...” he muttered his tone playful with that very faint smile on his lips. His deep voice, this close, caressed Naruto's senses like black velvet.
“Well, I did have a few bowls just a little bit ago,” Naruto pointed out, nipping at Sasuke's nose teasingly and tightening his grip on the other boy.
Sasuke raised a brow and glanced down at his torso then looked back up to Naruto. “You don't want to get into a squeezing match...” he warned.
Naruto blinked in confusion, his eyes narrowing to fox-slits. “Who said anything about a squeezing match?”
Sasuke's smirk was wicked suddenly as he tightened his arms around Naruto. “I did,” he stated and released the tighter hold after that. He didn't want to hurt Naruto... just to spend time with him and if that meant "playing" a little bit then he could deal with that.
“Well, this is no fun,” Naruto pouted and razzed him. “We both know you're going to win.”
“I know,” Sasuke muttered and then slowly released Naruto's body completely. “Then... what would you suggest we do for entertainment?”
“Hmm...” Naruto fox-grinned. “I do still owe you for that tickle attack when we woke up...” All of a sudden there were 10 Narutos and they all pounced on Sauske, tickling for all they were worth.
The greatest secret in all of Konoha... wasn't a secret any more. Sasuke gasped as the first three pairs of hands attacked him and then he was writhing, squirming, bucking anything he could do to get away from the mass onslaught of playful Naruto's. He was ticklish... very ticklish, but it wasn't something anyone but Sasuke knew, until now. “S-stop it you... idiot!!” he tried to sound demanding but it came out pleading instead because he couldn't stop laughing around the words.
“Not until you say uncle!!” Ten voices sing-songed in unison.
“Like... hell...” he ground out and then literally squealed as one of the multiples grabbed behind his knee. Now that just wasn't fair!
“Say it,” one of the clones - or was it the original? - purred in his ear mischievously.
Not fair? That was the lowest of low attacks in fights of this kind. “Mmphf... fine! Uncle!” he gasped as something else brought his attention from the tickling to focusing entirely on the voice purring pleasantly in his sensitive ear.
“Now was that so hard?” Naruto asked sweetly as his clones vanished, leaving him alone to kneel by the panting Uchiha.
His right hand, which had been lifted and pressed into the shoulder of one of Naruto's clones fell to his stomach when it vanished and Sasuke dragged his legs about until they were comfortable with one slightly up and sagged to one side and the other straight out. He was panting harder than he would have guessed from the tickling and he inhaled deeply to try to even out his breaths as he lifted his head and tucked his other arm beneath it. His eyes never left the real Naruto beside him. “Yes... it was...” he teased with a small smirk.
“You big baby,” Naruto taunted, standing up and stretching. “I'm gonna go run through a few more katas. If we're gonna stay here tonight then I might as well get a decent workout.” He crawled out of the cave to the clearing just outside and began to go through the movements of simple warm-up katas.
His gaze turned to the ceiling of the cave. Naruto still wasn't seeing it completely. Or was the other boy just ignoring Sasuke's deeper feelings? At that thought, a very small plan started to form in his mind. If Naruto wasn't going to decide on his own then Sasuke would give him a little incentive to make up his mind. Standing slowly, the vampire moved about the cave restocking the fire to keep it light in the cave and then eyed their sleeping rolls which were still stretched out side by side. Starting tomorrow things would definitely be a little different.
