Gaara rests his weight above me and caresses my skin, running his hands along my body. I ache – it has been so long since he’s held me. I hear his ragged breathing filling the night air, and his lips trail along my neck. I love the feel of his hair in my hands. He presses his body urgently against mine, and I moan softly. I love you, I whisper to his mind.
He jerks back from me suddenly, with hollow eyes.
“Wait,” I say in surprise, “Baby what’s wrong?”
His eyes turn angry and he starts to leave. No! Wait! I chase after him, but he’s out the door as fast as I blink.
Suddenly I’m standing beneath the sun in Konoha… the streets are full of people. I can see him ahead of me in the crowd. His back is turned, and he’s weaving through them away from me. No! Gaara, don’t leave! Please don’t leave! I run after him, but he is too fast… the crowd is too thick. They run into me, knocking me down. My hands burn and bleed as I strike the pavement, and now I’ve lost sight of him. I reach my mind out into the crowd, searching, but he’s nowhere!
“Gaara!” I scream through my tears. “Gaara don’t leave me!”
The world starts shaking, and a voice fades in above me. “Mizuki,” it calls, “Mizuki wake up!”
My eyes snap open and there is a face hovering just above me. Naruto, with his blond hair and whisker-like marks on his face, looks distressed. He’s got ahold of my shoulders – he must have been shaking me awake. I can feel my body trembling. I’m in a cold sweat, and I can feel the tear tracks on my face. Shit… I think to myself only. I’ve been having the nightmares ever since Gaara left me here. It’s embarrassing to think that Naruto now knows. I haven’t seen him since I left them in the street nearly two weeks ago. He’s been out on a mission for the Hokage since then.
“Did you…?” I ask, afraid to look.
“Uh… yeah.” He replies nervously. “I kinda saw it… weird.”
“Sorry.” I jump up to run to the bathroom and compose myself, but the movement is too fast. I feel the blood rush from my head. I feel myself start falling.
“Whoa!” he says, catching me and setting down on the edge of the bed. “Don’t get up so fast. It’s okay.”
“I’m sorry,” I whisper again. God I don’t want to cry in front of him.
“It’s okay, you know.” He says, with a worried face. “You can talk to me about it.”
It belatedly occurs to me that Naruto is… in my bedroom?... in the middle of the night. “Naruto!” I gasp. “What are you doing here?”
“I… Uhhh….” He blushes slightly. “Well, I wanted to check on you, ya know. See if you were okay.”
“In the middle of the night?!” He is trying to hide something, which would almost be funny if I weren’t so shaken up. “Why on Earth are you here?”
“Hey, don’t be mad. Please?” He looks like he wants to explain… but doesn’t.
“Naruto, tell me the truth or so help me…!”
“Okay, okay!” he says, putting his hands up defensively. “Grandma Tsunade wanted me to check on you. She heard some weird reports… and wanted me to see if they were true.”
Oh no… oh shit! “What reports?” I ask cautiously, hoping desperately to be wrong.
“Well…” he rubbed the back of his head nervously. “It’s kinda funny see… your uhhh… your neighbors have been having trouble sleeping. I think the guy from upstairs…” he fights to hold back a laugh, “I think he told Grandma Tsunade that if he wakes up one more time longing for the Kazekage of Suna…” he’s losing his hold on his laughter, “he’s gonna jump off the roof of the building!” He can no longer contain himself and bursts into a full roaring laugh, holding his sides.
Oh my God! I am so embarrassed I could die right on the spot. I thought the heartache was bad enough. I jump up from the bedside again, and walk to the window facing out – fresh tears streaming down my face. What the hell is going on? I don’t normally have this problem! I have to be really sick… or really under for any kind of dream to leak… and normally it’s only the extreme ones that do. I have felt recently like my mental reach was growing, somehow strengthening slowly – despite the fact that I’m hardly using it at all. But this?
“How long?” I ask Naruto. “How long have my neighbors been having trouble sleeping?”
“Uh… Grandma Tsunade says it was recent… only a few days maybe. Why?”
This confirms my suspicion. I have been having the dreams for much longer than that. If they are only now starting to leak… it must be a gradual thing. Damnit! That also means it’s likely to grow if I don’t find a way to stop it.
“Oh, Naruto,” I sob, “What am I going to do?! I can’t not sleep!”
“Do… do you have dreams like that a lot?” he asks, with a sad voice.
“Every night.”
“Really?” he sounds surprised. “Wow, that… really sucks.”
“I should leave.” I head to my dresser, and start grabbing clothes to shove into a duffel bag. I will take only what I need. Until I can get a handle on this… I cannot handle the embarrassment, or risk that something truly terrible will come out in my dreams.
“Hey, wait a minute!” he shouts getting up. He comes towards me and grabs my wrist. “You can’t just leave!”
“Yes, I can,” I insist, shaking him off. “I am not a prisoner Naruto.”
“You’re making a big deal out of this!” he criticizes. “So you have bad dreams… and yeah maybe sometimes people can see them. So what?! That doesn’t mean you have to leave the whole village!”
“Naruto, this isn’t normal for me,” I try to explain. “I’ve been feeling like my mental power is growing, and this seems to confirm that. If I cannot control my ability… I could hurt someone. I don’t want to risk that.”
“No way!” he counters. “All you’re risking is relaying some bad dreams. It’s not a big deal. If you leave, you’re risking your life!”
“Well, that’s my choice,” I roughly snatch more clothes up, but he snatches the bag from my hands, holding it away from me.
“No way, am I letting you just walk out of here!” he shouts again, “Gaa… Grandma Tsunade will kill me! And Jeriyah will refuse to let me train for weeks!” I don’t have to read his mind to know that’s not who he’s really afraid of.
“Naruto, this is serious!” I can feel my panic setting in. “There are things in my nightmares that would terrify you… things that could kill. I don’t know what’s going on with me right now. I will not let other people be put at risk to protect myself. GAARA,” I enunciate strongly, “will get over it. He’ll probably be happier once I’m out of sight and mind.”
I try to snatch my bag back, but he jumps across the room and holds it away from his body and mine like a bomb. I roll my eyes in exasperation.
“Wait, wait!” he shouts as I’m about to lunge at him again. “It’s the middle of the night! You don’t have to go now… why don’t you think about it more in the morning?”
“What would be the point? I would still have to sit awake for the rest of the night.”
“No you don’t!” He’s reaching, grasping for a way to keep me here. “I… uhhh… I can stay! Yeah! I’ll stay here for the rest of the night. You can go back to sleep… and… and if you start having bad dreams again, I’ll just wake you up!” He suddenly grins from ear to ear at his desperately inspired idea. “Come on! It worked this time didn’t it?”
“And what if you fall asleep?”
“I won’t! I swear. If it even looks like you’re gonna freak out or cry or anything… I’ll wake you up right away. I swear!” He looks so desperate, I almost giggle. I am exhausted, too. The events of the day have completely wiped me out.
“Fine…” I accept begrudgingly. “But I swear, if you don’t, I’ll inflict more pain on you than you thought possible.”
His whole body seems to relax, as he sags down with his arms hanging to his knees. He then looks around the room, and gets a distinctly worried look on his face; what he’s volunteered for only now occurring to him. He stands up straight, like a sentry, as if he intends to stand there all night. I can’t help but laugh.
“Oh please, Naruto.” I scoff. “I don’t bite. Just sit on the other side of the bed.” I flop down on my normal side, hugging the edge. I pull my blankets up over me to my chin, and try to fall back asleep; but now the additional worry is plaguing me. I feel his weight settle down on the other side of the mattress and try unsuccessfully to think of nothing.
