----------The Following Evening----------
Waking slowly as he usually did Sasuke’s body slowly began to rouse. His eyes opened but long before they could actually see, and his lungs had begun to draw in more regular and quicker breaths until he was at his waking capacity. Finally as he began to focus he looked for Naruto on his bed. ::On my bed... I like the sound of that....:: It felt out of character to him sometimes those mostly unfamiliar thoughts, but when he thought his Vampiric nature it really didn't seem that odd that even a little of his thinking had changed.
Naruto slept soundly curled up against Sasuke's side, still exhausted. At about four that morning he just hadn't been able to move anymore and had wanted to go to sleep, but Sasuke kept him awake (with taunts and pokes and brief, teasing kisses) until just after dawn so that he would sleep through the day. It wouldn't take him long at this rate to get used to sleeping during the daylight hours. In response to Sasuke's movements he curled up a little tighter and burrowed further into Sasuke's shoulder.
He laid there for a long time simply enjoying the moment. Then when he figured lying around pointlessly like this wasn't getting them anywhere, he reached over and rolled Naruto onto his back before poking him in the stomach. “Oi....” he demanded and poked him again. “We need to go inform the old woman that we're leaving.”
The fox-boy just rolled over and snuggled close again. “Five more minutes...” he mumbled sleepily with a yawn.
Sasuke smirked and rolled them so he lay on top of Naruto and nipped with blunt teeth at Naruto’s throat. “Up,” he ordered between two particularly harder ones.
One blue eye cracked open to glare sleepily at Sasuke. “I said five more minutes.”
“And I said no... We need to go inform the old woman that we're leaving today. Get up,” he ordered and nipped again.
Muttering darkly about what a stupid bastard Sasuke was, Naruto shoved him off and got off the bed to collect his pants and jacket. “All I asked for is five more minutes but noooooo...” he grumbled. “I'm going home and raiding my kitchen first. M'hungry.”
“We can eat at the Ichiraku before we leave. It will be a while before you'll get that... We'll talk to Tsunade now and then maybe I'll head to Ino's to Feed while you head to the Ichiraku. I'll meet you there and we'll leave,” he stated deciding that that was the course of action they would take.
“Only if you're paying,” Naruto said as he shoved his hands in his pockets and walked through the door, already heading for the Tower. Tsunade had better not have changed her mind about letting him go...!
He fell into step beside Naruto and dug into his pocket pulling out his wallet, shaped like the Uchiha family insignia and made with soft, dyed leather. He dug out enough money for Naruto to have a total five bowls of Ramen and then stated, “That's enough...” before he picked up speed. They reached the Hokage's tower with Sasuke holding back to keep even with the still-out of shape fox-boy. Once at Tsunade's door they knocked and waited. Sasuke raised a brow when there was a bit of a lag between the knock and the invitation in that was shouted through the door.
Tsunade sat at her desk and looked between them. “Yes?” she asked testily.
Seeing that Tsunade was in a twitchy mood - as was Jiraiya, standing behind her and looking like he was doing his best not to tear their heads off - Naruto decided to make this visit uber short. “We're leaving. See you when we get back,” and with that he turned on his heel and fled the room. Judging from the rumpled state of Jiraiya's shirt Naruto really didn't want to be in there any longer than he absolutely had to.
“Hold it! Gaki!” she yelled at which point Sasuke reached behind him and caught Naruto by the jacket. He could easily smell the arousal between the two Sannin and he would have liked to follow Naruto but Tsunade obviously wanted to say something to them that was important.
Tsunade shifted in her seat and grumbled as Sasuke and Naruto kept their distance. She didn't doubt the reason for Sasuke's stand-off-ishness. Naruto was probably remembering the last time he'd simply walked into her office to boot. Whatever, she had to offer her business and then she could get back to her pleasure. “I wanted to make a proposition.” Seeing that she had their attention she then said, “I want you two to consider working as team together... permanently as a unit... after Sasuke passes his second Chuunin exam... if he passes it that is. Think about it while you're on this little trip of yours... and then come speak with me when you return. That's all... get out.”
“'Kay bye!” Naruto didn't need telling twice and was out of the room like a shot, actually managing to drag Sasuke a bit. “Food and then pack and then leave,” he said to his partner as he headed in the direction of the Ichiraku, Sasuke's money in his pocket.
“I'll meet you at the Ichiraku then,” he said and vanished from sight and detection. He reappeared outside Ino's door but stopped when his super-sensitive ears picked up two voices and no extra heartbeats. Ino was in there alone... with Shikamaru? He stepped up to the building and leaned against the wall by the door, listening.
“......... it's ridiculous Ino. The leech is using you like a cow! You're good for blood and that's it! That's all he wants from you...” Shikamaru was saying, apparently a small part of a larger conversation, as he looked Ino right in the eyes.
“That's not true!” Ino yelled back, fighting back the tears that had been threatening since Shikamaru started yelling at her. “He's not like that! He came to me because he trusts me!”
“Yeah, he trusts that you'll give him anything he wants or needs! He's using you!” he snapped in a totally un-Shikamaru-like manner. “You're cattle to him! and what if he comes here starving and takes more than you can give safely? Then what are you going to do?”
The crack of palm meeting cheek echoed through the room. “He is not using me!” Ino snapped viciously back. “And he won't take too much! He's always careful of how much he takes!”
Shikamaru's head had snapped to the side sharply when her palm had met his cheek. A very placid look suddenly stole over his face as he looked to her. “Fine... what does it matter to me anyway? Damn woman.... it's your problem. Not mine.” And he left with that heading out the front door and letting it shut on it's own behind him.
“It matters to you... because you care about her... and it hurts that she hasn't noticed you at all.”
Shikamaru stopped dead in his tracks and then turned slowly. “Bastard.... takku...” He glared at Sasuke a moment and then looked away. “Hurt her and I’ll kill you... somehow.” And then he seemingly left.
Despite the fact that it seemed Shikamaru had left Sasuke knew that he was still out there somewhere in the shadows watching him. Sasuke sighed and leapt to the roof of the Yamanaka residence. There would have to be a meal elsewhere tonight and from now on, the Yamanaka residence was off-limits. He set out for Iruka's apartment hoping to catch him either alone or at least unoccupied.
Ino slowly climbed the stairs to her room. She'd watched through the window as Shikamaru left and had heard Sasuke's words, which ran through her mind in an endless loop. Shikamaru... cared about her...? She was... hurting him...? ...When she realized just what she had done she sobbed herself to sleep.
--------------------
Done with his dinner Naruto waited impatiently outside the Ichiraku for Sasuke. He was sorely tempted to just go home and pack without him.
Sasuke eventually arrived looking a little peevish. He'd had to find Lee which meant he had to deal with Sakura. It wasn't as bad as it might have been but still, they had both insisted on feeding him and taking blood from sakura while Lee had watched was awkward and vise versa. Sighing he looked down at Naruto. “Ready to pack?” he asked and waited impatiently to be on their way to their respective apartments to pack. “Bring clothes for all weather and make sure you have some extra rations in your pack just in case,” he warned then waited again since he might have cut Naruto off at that point.
“Yeah, I know. I've been doing missions for how long now?” Naruto quipped back with a smirk. “See you in a bit. I'll meet you at your place.” He left to pack... and reminded himself to pack as light as possible. He didn't want a repeat of when he'd gone traveling with Jiraiya on the search for Tsunade.
With a nod, Sasuke took off in the other direction. He was standing in the middle of his room staring at his enormous and multi-pillowed bed - which he had just finished making - when Naruto appeared on the balcony. The large sliding doors that led onto the balcony were open breathing the curtains in and out with soft puffs of night air. Sasuke didn't acknowledge Naruto's presence even a tiny bit though. He seemed too engrossed in the bed.
Naruto walked up to stand next to him, a large pack on his back, and looked at the bed too. Not understanding why Sasuke was staring at it he turned his head and asked, “Did your brain shut off again?” He was eager to be off. The sooner they left, the sooner he could train, the sooner they found and killed Itachi.
Sasuke didn't even look at him. He only muttered something about "dobes and their ever-running mouths" and turned heading for the balcony. Finally, as he reached the second story porch, he turned and said, “Let's go... we need to find a shelter before sunrise...”
“I am not a dobe,” Naruto grumbled, but he followed without protest. They traveled mostly in silence throughout the night, Sasuke leading the way since he was using his over-developed senses to search for his brother. When the glow of false dawn touched everything around them, they were leagues away from Konoha and still had no clue as to where Itachi was. “Oi, Sasuke! I found a cave over here!” Naruto called as he examined a small hole in a side of a cliff. The hole was a little too small to accommodate both him and his backpack so he took it off and crawled in. There was more than enough room inside for the both of them and it would be child's play to guard the entrance. Perfect.
Sasuke leapt down to the ground from the very top of an ancient and giant tree and landed crouching right before the entrance to the cave. Naruto's backpack sat outside the cave and Sasuke looked at it then removed his own laying it beside Naruto's. Without hesitation he crawled in. Despite the size of the cave's entrance it was quite spacious on the inside. Sasuke stood and looked about then very carefully sniffed the air. He detected no harmful fumes - and if he couldn't detect them than they weren't there - so he lifted one hand in the darkness of the cave and reached into his Powers. A tiny flame flickered to life in the palm of his hand as if it flared from a large wick there and it sent light licking to all corners of the room-sized irregularly shaped cave. “Good,” he said shortly and looked to Naruto.
Still on his hands and knees Naruto pushed Sasuke's legs aside and pulled his pack through the hole. He then left, soon returning with an armful of sticks and twigs. Not fazed at all by the fire in Sasuke’s hand Naruto lit a twig with it and soon had a fire going in the middle of the cave. “Dinnertime!” he declared, now digging through his pack for a water bottle and packet of instant ramen. His bedroll could wait; his stomach couldn't.
There was a faint, bemused smirk on Sasuke's lips as he set their bedrolls up. He wasn't eating so he had the time. For a moment he debated how to lay them out and then opted to consult Naruto before making any final decisions. Looking up he stated, “I'm laying your bedroll between mine and the entrance... You can wake up quickly during the day... I obviously can't.” Then he lifted a brow. “Is that ok?”
The old Sasuke would have never even explained or asked. This one figured it was better to include Naruto in everything as an equal if he wanted to stay on the blond's good side. and oh how he wanted to stay on Naruto's good side.
“Sure, okay,” Naruto said around a mouthful, not questioning Sasuke’s explanation as it made sense. He didn't mind playing guard dog, and he liked the idea of Sasuke putting his life in his hands. “You want some of my broth before I drink it all?” he offered, holding the bowl out. He had plenty more packets in his bag so he didn't mind sharing.
Sasuke blinked once in surprise before nodding in silent, stoical shock and moved over to settle cross-legged by Naruto. Taking the bowl he sipped a little of the still warm fluid from the bowl careful not to take in any stray noodles and then handed the bowl back to Naruto muttering “Thanks...”
“No prob. Do you actually get anything from it besides the taste?” Naruto asked curiously as he devoured the rest of the noodles, wanting to know everything about being a vampire that Sasuke was willing to tell him.
“No. Well....” he hesitated. He wasn't certain he was right, but he figured it couldn't help to voice his speculation as just that. “My Maker told me we get nothing but the taste from actual drinks, but I think part of it is that anything liquid is somewhat hydrating. Just like humans need water to survive...”
“Your maker?” Naruto asked, finishing his first bowl and beginning to make the second one. His attention never left Sasuke; he could and had made ramen in his sleep.
“The vampire that Changed me,” Sasuke explained. “Makoto.”
“How do you get turned into a vampire?” His second bowl was already almost empty. It was a good thing about half his pack was filled with food...
“Blood exchange. Sort of like a transfusion. The vampire drinks your blood and then you drink the blood of the vampire. It would work if you were bled out and drank vampire blood too, but you'd be a much weaker fledgling for not getting at least some of your own blood returned to you though slightly altered.... why the sudden interest?” he asked tilting his head. Naruto usually didn't ask a lot of questions about potentially confusing subjects.
“'Cause I wanna know,” Naruto said with a shrug, in the process of making yet another bowl. “It's interesting. and... it's you, y'know? I have to know in case your brain decides to leak out your ears and you do something stupid again,” he taunted with a fox-grin. “The more I know the more likely I'll succeed in saving your sorry ass.”
Sasuke snorted, but he didn't argue. Naruto had saved him from himself countless times. He was just a little reluctant to admit it still. Leaning back on his hands he let one knee rise from the cross-legged position and he looked at the brightening of real dawn. “I'm going to bed... or I won't make it there by myself,” he said at last and then twisted until he was on hands and knees before making his way to his bedroll.... just like that.
“Okay. Oyasumi.” Naruto ate two more bowls of ramen before stripping down to his boxers and settling into his bedroll, laying on his side and facing Sauske. The vampire was already dead and losing warmth. His face was the last thing Naruto saw as he fell asleep, back to the sunlight and shielding Sasuke from its harmful rays.
