Chapter 27
Shikamaru rarely got up early. One of the perks of being a veritable genius was that he got to set his own hours, it was one of the only perks- generally it was troublesome. He threw on a wife-beater and some sweats before putting his hair in its usual ponytail and exiting his apartment- he vaguely noticed that Naruto wasn’t home yet, that probably meant Naruto and Kimimaro had done the inevitable. Well, it wasn’t like he wasn’t planning on remedying that and he wasn’t exactly blameless with Itachi. He got to the park and started loosening his muscles, preparing for a hard run. After he stretched he started at a jog.
Contrary to what other people believed he did exercise and he was also more than capable of kicking someone’s ass- one did not grow up with Naruto and know about Kyuubi without being able to. He increased his pace, body moving faster and started to feel beads of sweat on his forehead. He liked running, it was one of the activities that he didn’t mind- he didn’t mind martial arts either but that was generally when he was a spectator, watching Naruto fight was like watching poetry in motion.
He ran because when he ran he didn’t have to think. All he had to do when he ran was concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other and breathing. Just calm, even breaths in and out. Nothing but that. There was no Naruto, no friends, no problems that he was supposed to solve because he was the resident genius. There was nothing but him and running. For a person that never stopped thinking, never stopped analyzing, it was a relief. It was a respite and it could almost be a drug. When he ran he found peace from everything.
When he got home his shirt was sticking to his body and he was pleasantly out of breath. He could hear Naruto swearing in the bathroom. Shikamaru pulled the hairband out of his hair and shook his head, letting his hair settle where ever it may in damp tendrils. He knocked on the door, “Are you alright in there?”
Naruto opened the door, clad only in a pair of boxer-briefs and he couldn’t help but appreciate the view the tall man gave him. His eyes scanned Naruto up and down and he felt his blood boil when he saw the bruises all over delicious golden skin. He took a deep breath to calm down and when it didn’t really work bit out, “He hurt you.”
Naruto shook his head and smiled wryly, “He didn’t do anything I didn’t want him to do and it definitely didn’t hurt at the time.”
Shikamaru frowned, “He shouldn’t have left you like this. If you needed pain then there are ways he could have gave it to you without bleeding you. You look like you got into a fight, he should have taken more care,” Shikamaru examined Naruto carefully, ignoring the odd look Naruto sent him, before phrasing his next question, “Did he...hurt you? In other places?”
Naruto looked at Shikamaru in confusion before his eyes widened as he got the question and a flush worked its way up his face, “No!” When Shikamaru still looked unconvinced he shook his head vehemently, “I think I’d know if I got torn or anything happened down there. I swear I’m fine. Can you help me disinfect and bandaid these though?”
He looked at Naruto for a few more moments before he decided that Naruto was telling the truth. He grabbed a stool from the kitchen island and pushed Naruto onto it, taking the first aid kit from him and pulling on some latex gloves.
When Naruto looked at the gloves in question he answered, “I just came from a run, I’m not exactly clean right now.”
Naruto smiled and reached up to play with the ends of his hair, “I always love how your hair looks when you come back from a run or finish fighting. We haven’t been to the dojo in a long time, we should book some time soon.”
Shikamaru leaned into the touch for a few moments before humming in response, it wasn’t agreement but it wasn’t disagreement either, “Remember to stay still,” he grunted.
Naruto dropped his hand and Shikamaru set about disinfecting everything with some alcohol and putting Polysporin on everything that was bleeding before putting on either bandaids or gauze depending on the size of the wounds. He patted Naruto on the shoulder to get his attention, “You’re done.”
He stretched and ambled to his room, taking off his wife-beater as he went, “I’m taking a shower,” he called over his shoulder.
Shikamaru stood under the hot spray for a while before he sighed and ran a hand through his hair, so much for his run. It looked like he’d have to take up his activity of choice more often.
A/N: Only one person commented on the sex scene, should I take it then that you guys didn't like it? I don't own Polysporin but it is very useful for any open wounds. Also thank Dorkchic for giving me the idea for this chapter.
