Dinner was in a quiet restaurant near the docks. Specializing in fresh seafood, it had low lighting, white tablecloths and cozy booths. The two couples took their seats and Kakashi spoke quietly to the waiter who took himself off immediately.
They studied the menu quietly and Tenten and Gai conferred in whispers. He turned to Kakashi. "This place is wonderful. Thank you for bringing us here, but are you sure…?" He let the question hang unfinished.
Kakashi smiled. "Consider this a wedding gift from the two of us. We're quite sure." As he said this, he put his arm around Sakura and pulled her a little closer to him.
Sakura smiled at them. "I'm so happy for you two."
Tenten blushed and looked over her menu at them. "Well, thank you very much."
A few minutes later the waiter came back with a bottle and four glasses. He set the glasses down, then opened the bottle and the small pop surprised the two couples. He carefully poured the bubbly golden liquid into the glasses, then proceeded to take their orders. When he left, Kakashi picked up his glass and held it up.
"I never would have put you two together if someone had asked me who Gai would fall for. Then again, I might have considered that he never would have fallen for anyone." They chuckled at this. "But I'm happy for you two. We've all heard the comments about the lifespan of the average ninja. We understand how uncertain our lives can be and I think it takes a certain type of person to stand up to that and take the chance to love anyway. I sincerely hope you both have many, many years together. To you guys!" He held his glass out and they all clinked theirs together before taking sips.
Sakura took her sip and set the glass down. When Kakashi looked sideways at her, she smiled. "A sip or two isn't going to hurt." He nodded, trusting her knowledge of all things health and turned back to the other two.
Tenten had been wearing a perpetual grin and blush all day long. Now, she spoke up. "I want to thank you guys. Not for dinner, but for getting together." When Kakashi and Sakura exchanged puzzled glanced, she added, "if it weren't for the two of you, who knows how long we might have gone along? How long we might have waited?" She looked over at Gai and took his hand. "It's because of you that we were able to take the step and I'm thankful for it."
Sakura grinned at her. "Well, I'm happy for it." She looked over at Kakashi and found him watching her. "I only wish I had recognized my feelings for him sooner. Like he said in his toast, our lives are so uncertain. If Pein hadn't done what he'd done…" she paused and had to gather herself. "If he hadn't brought everyone back, I would never have known…"
She stopped and took a drink of her champagne, fighting the sudden urge to cry. She'd been fighting this all day. Thinking about how much she would have missed if he had died along with all the others during the invasion. She'd tried, unsuccessfully, over and over again to tell herself it did no good to dwell on what might have happened. He was alive. He was here with her now. But she hadn't been able to let go of it.
She felt him tighten his arm around her and she snuggled into him. She gave herself another minute to settle down again, then she turned back to the others. "Do you know, I've spent two years rejecting dates because they never measured up to him?"
Tenten laughed. "I know what you mean. I actually even dated Lee for a bit, but, well, as similar as they are…he's not Gai."
"I kept looking at the women you tried to set me up with, Gai, and they were always wrong. Hair too long, wrong color eyes, wrong color hair…I didn't even know I was doing it." Kakashi shook his head at himself.
Gai blushed. "For me, well, at first I was trying to forget her. I had no idea how much I had already fallen in love, but I could not stop thinking about her. But I kept thinking that I was not allowed to have her and so tried to find someone else to help me forget. Of course, none of them were good enough."
"A good thing, too. Or Sakura might have had a lot of work in the hospital. Cleaning up my mess." Tenten chuckled to herself. "Every time he took someone out, I imagined myself beating them to a pulp. I wouldn't, of course, but boy did I want to…"
"We really are crazy aren't we? I wonder how many other ninja couples are out there going through something similar? Afraid to act on their feelings because of our profession?" Sakura shook her head.
Their food arrived then and they all took a few moments to settle into eating. "You know Temari's back in Konoha?" Tenten said around a bit of lobster.
"Oh really? When did she get back?" Sakura asked.
"Right after you guys left. But that's not the funniest thing. I heard she walked right up to Shikamaru, grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him off." She picked up a piece of bread from the basket and tore it open.
"You're kidding. I thought they were so adamant about not seeing each other." Sakura took another bite of her meal.
"Ha. So did I." Tenten shook her head again. "Guess they were covering up after all. It's good, though. She'd be good for him."
"Well, at least they're not as bad as Hinata and Naruto." This came from Kakashi and they turned to him. "Well, she's been pining after him for years. He's such a blockhead for not realizing what's been going on. Even after she said what she did during the invasion, he still doesn't get it. None of us are that bad, at least." They laughed. "He'll figure it out someday. Hopefully before he's gray."
Sakura smiled. "Might be sooner than that. I heard him ask her out for ramen. Of course, she passed out right after. But he was nice and woke her back up." She paused to think. "I think he ended up having to carry her back to the Hyuuga compound."
They turned to their food again and ate in companionable silence for a while. When they finished, their plates were cleared away and a small white cake was brought out. The waiter set it on the table and handed a small knife and server to Gai. "Congratulations," he said before bowing himself away.
Gai turned to Tenten and together they used the small knife to cut the cake. They served a slice to each of them then turned to each other. With goofy expressions on their faces, they fed each other a bite of cake, punctuated with deep kisses.
Sakura laid her head on Kakashi's shoulder, happier than she could remember being in a very long time. Their lives had changed drastically in a few months. When the seeming invulnerability that Konoha had begun to enjoy in recent years had been breached, it seriously upset the balance of life in the village. But as they were also known for, they pitched in and began rebuilding. Life would get back to normal.
And she would have a husband and, a few months later, a baby. It seemed a little surreal, actually.
When they finished their cake, they made their way back to the inn to change into more comfortable clothing. Ninja clothes for Tenten, casual pants and shirt for the guys, Sakura again considered what to wear. Since Tenten was wearing pants, however, she opted for her own short pants, flat sandals and simple top.
Back out to the pier they stopped in front of the bar they'd been in several nights prior. Kakashi held the door for the women to precede them into the room and they settled into one of the tables off to the side. Gai bought a round of drinks and they settled in to see who might show up.
At first, they were afraid that after the confrontation several nights ago, no one would show up, but after about half an hour, they needn't have worried. The one Sakura had thought was a bit nicer showed up with a few of his friends and took seats at the bar.
He hadn't missed that she was there and his eyes passed over Tenten, lingering on her longer than was necessary. It made Tenten squirm a little, but she recognized that it had to happen. She didn't like it, but it might just get them what they needed to happen.
Kakashi went over to the jukebox and dropped some money into it. He selected a few songs and came back to the table, holding his hand out for Sakura. "Care to dance?"
She grinned up at him and went over to the corner by the jukebox with him. They swayed to the music a bit, taking the few moments to enjoy each other. They noticed that Gai and Tenten had joined them and the two couples commanded the attention of the men at the bar.
When the songs were over, they went back to the table and everyone finished their drinks. Kakashi bought the next round and they pretended to get a little louder with their conversation. Knowing that the men at the bar were still watching them, though more surreptitiously now, Kakashi got up and headed toward the restrooms. A moment later, Gai did, too and the women were alone.
"Hello, pretty lady. Remember me?" The man Sakura remembered from the other night.
"Oh, hello. Um…Hitoshi, right?" Sakura smiled at him.
"You do remember!" He grinned broadly. "Would you introduce me to your beautiful friend?" He turned to Tenten.
"Yes, um, this is Tenten. Tenten, Hitoshi." She sipped at her soda and watched Tenten measure him up.
Tenten smiled and held her hand out. Hitoshi, in a rather surprising move, kissed her knuckles. "It is a pleasure to meet you." He turned back to Sakura, "I do not wish to cross your husband again, however if it is possible, I would love to dance with you later."
He tilted his head to them in a small bow before heading back to the bar. Sakura stared at him a moment. "Wow. I have a feeling someone had a talking to…" Tenten sent her a puzzled look, but Sakura waved her hand slightly. "Later."
The guys came back then and sat back down. "Our…friend… stopped over to say hi. I'm thinking he might bear watching."
Kakashi nodded. "I thought so. Well. I think we all need more drinks."
"My turn. Blossom, did he say anything to you?" He turned to Tenten.
She smiled at him. "He introduced himself, but was actually rather gentlemanly. Be nice, Gai, we need him."
He didn't look happy about it, but went up to the bar anyway to get their drinks. A few minutes later, he returned and Hitoshi had gotten up and approached the jukebox. He started a slow song and came back to their table. "Sakura, would you honor me?"
Kakashi had to hold his temper forcibly. Sakura squeezed his hand once before standing up. "Sure." He led her over to the corner and she took his hand.
They started decently enough. He was actually a nice dancer, too. "You really are very pretty. I suppose I should say something like, 'your husband is a lucky man.' But I will say that if you ever decide he's not the man for you…" he trailed off and smiled.
She laughed. "Thank you. I'll keep that in mind."
The song ended and he escorted her back to the table. He turned to Kakashi and bowed. "You are a very lucky man."
Kakashi acknowledged it with a nod of his head and put his arm possessively around Sakura. "Thank you. I am, indeed.'
Hitoshi turned to Tenten then and extended his hand. "Tenten, could I have this dance?"
Tenten looked a bit nervous but stood up anyway and went with him. Sakura smiled encouragingly at her.
She put her hand in his and they started dancing slowly to the music. "How do you know Sakura?"
Tenten paused, unsure of how much they'd said. "I work with her."
"At the hospital?" He asked.
Tenten cringed inwardly. "Yes, at the hospital. I… work in security."
He nodded. "She healed me a few days ago. We'd gotten into a bit of a…fight…with her husband. Another guy at the bar here hit on her and, I admit, so did I. She made it clear enough that she was happy with her husband, but the other man - Takeshi - wouldn't take no for an answer. Her husband tried to warn him not to pick a fight but Takeshi makes a mule look easygoing."
Tenten laughed. "That's pretty bad. So, you ended up in the fight, too?"
"Yes, though I'm not quite sure how. One minute I was watching he and the lady's husband fight and the next I was throwing punches." He shrugged. "I got off without too much trouble, but Sakura patched me up."
"She's good at that. The few times we have trouble in security, she's usually the one to take care of me. We've been friends since school."
The song ended and he escorted her back to the booth. "Thank you very much." He said and kissed her knuckles again, then turned back and sat back at the bar with his friends.
"He doesn't seem the type." Tenten said quietly.
"I know what you mean. After the initial…confrontation, he was very apologetic. Though I don't know if that was because he was afraid of Kakashi or genuinely sorry. I think it was as much the latter as the former." Sakura sipped at her drink. "How are we going to manage this?"
Gai looked pensive for a moment. "I think perhaps we are a bit intimidating."
Sakura looked at him. "No, you, Gai?"
The humor was lost on him. "Yes, me. And Kakashi."
Kakashi got it right away. "I see what you mean. Maybe you and I should take a walk." He turned to Sakura and, kissing her close to her ear, whispered, "we'll set up nearby and watch you guys. Please be careful."
"I will. I love you." She whispered back to him.
"I love you." He kissed her again and stood.
Gai and Tenten were having a similar moment before he stood as well. "We'll see you later." He said louder and they waved as they headed out the door.
It didn't take Hitoshi more than two minutes. He appeared at their table, holding two drinks. "Did they desert you?"
Sakura smiled up at him. "Oh, no. They had some things to see to. We just wanted to have another drink before we went back."
"Well, then, isn't it convenient that I have one here for you?" He placed the drinks in front of them. "Could I, perhaps, join you?"
Tenten and Sakura exchanged glances, and Sakura scooted over in the booth. Hitoshi sat next to her. Sakura reached out and picked up her glass. She sniffed it carefully, trying to be inconspicuous. She recognized a couple of the chemicals in it. Her eyes flashed at Tenten in warning and, Tenten twitched her nose in reply.
It wouldn't hurt the baby. That was her first thought, so she took a couple of sips and watched as Tenten drank quite a bit more. Hitoshi seemed to be waiting for something and Sakura suspected she knew what it was.
This could be her only chance to separate from Tenten. "Um, I need to run to the ladies' room, could you excuse me for a moment?" She smiled at Hitoshi.
"Of course. Please." He stood up and motioned toward the back. Sakura dearly hoped there was a window in the restroom.
She wasn't so lucky. And when she came back out, she felt an arm around her neck squeeze slightly. Spots formed in front of her eyes and then she passed out.
She was only out a moment or two, however, because she heard Hitoshi say something to the men at the bar, then, more loudly, "I guess they can't hold their liquor. I'll just help them back to their inn."
The bartender spoke up over the din of voices. "Make sure you do! She's a nice one and helped me out!"
She felt herself being lifted into a set of arms and carried. Someone apparently held the door for them and she felt the cool night air on her skin. She tried to gauge distance, but it was difficult at best, not being used to being carried.
She thought they turned a corner and she allowed her eye to open to peek around. Tenten was passed out and over another man's shoulder. They were in an alley of some sort and she started to "stir." "That one is going to wake up. She didn't drink enough."
"Shh." This was Hitoshi. "Or you WILL wake her up. We're almost there."
A moment later, Sakura heard a door open and she started to worry. She'd waited too long. She moaned quietly, hoping to get them to stop. She didn't want to cause Tenten any problems, but she didn't want to find herself kidnapped after all.
It didn't work. The door closed behind them and she and Tenten were laid gently onto a carpeted floor. She opened one eye a bit and peeked around.
A warehouse of some sort, the room they were in was large and dark. The section they were laying in had a small metal desk, a chair of some disrepair and a desk lamp casting a weak circle of light on the industrial grey carpet they were laying on. She couldn't see a ceiling or the walls.
Hitoshi came around the desk after retrieving something from the drawers, so Sakura quickly shut her eye. It was a mistake, though. A moment later, she felt her hands being pulled behind her and tied. Then her ankles were tied together. A moment later, she was picked up and thrown over a shoulder likes a sack of rice.
She opened her eyes and realized she was staring at Hitoshi's back. She struggled. He slapped her butt. "Hold still. I really don't want to have to hurt you."
She cursed herself silently. Looking over, she saw Tenten was still passed out and was trussed similarly. She was thrown over the shoulder of one of the other men from the bar. Shit shit shit. She wasn't supposed to be kidnapped, too.
She tried to calm herself down. She could still get out, but she had to be careful or she'd blow their cover. She decided it would be better to wait it out and see if she could learn any more. She only hoped that Kakashi didn't try anything. He would recognize the necessity of keeping away. She hoped.
After what seemed like forever but was probably only a couple of minutes, they came into another room. What she could see from her upside down point of view was another mostly-empty room. There was more of the industrial grey carpet and more weak lamps, this time hanging from the ceiling. She and Tenten were put down on the floor, though Hitoshi took more care with her than his partner did with Tenten.
"Watch it! Don't go damaging her. We're supposed to be careful, at least until the Boss knows more about them." Hitoshi scolded his partner.
"You mean until he figures out if they're virgins or not." He chuckled. "I hope not. I'd like a piece of each of them before they're shipped off."
Hitoshi sighed. "Just go get the Boss."
"Yeah yeah." And the other guy left through a different door than they'd come in.
Sakura struggled to sit up but with her bound hands it was extremely difficult. She looked around, the room and saw Hitoshi sitting in simple metal chair by the door, his arms crossed over his chest, watching her. She couldn't decipher the look in his eyes, but she thought maybe there was a bit of regret in it. He looked away.
She turned her attention to the rest of the room. There was only one other chair in the room, but nothing else. There were no windows that she could see, but as dim as the lighting was, it was no real surprise. The ceilings were high and what she could see of the walls, they were bare brick.
A moment later, the other door opened again and Sakura was surprised when she heard the voice.
"Well well, what do we have here? Welcome, Mrs. Hatake."
Sakura managed to roll over to face the speaker and came face to face with none other than Fushinji himself.
