Chapter 26
The easy banter in the shower turned to embarrassment once they were back in the bedroom and Kakashi realized what Iruka must have guessed about him. He had told no one, not even the medics, psych nins, his closest friends or his ninken what two of his so called teammates had done to him. Most days he didn’t even admit it to himself. Kakashi sat in one of the chairs, wrapped a blanket around himself and stared defiantly at the chunnin, “Well aren’t you going to laugh?” “There is nothing to laugh about,” Iruka said evenly as he placed dried mint leaves into a tea kettle. Most people who’d ever been raped felt ashamed even though it was not their fault. He’d been counseled enough and counseled enough others to know the importance of removing that feeling and reassigning blame to the perpetrator where it belonged. He added water and casually commented, “I imagine that when it happened you were younger and more vulnerable?” Kakashi frowned and nodded unsure of where the chuunin was going. “All of us are young and vulnerable at some point. We all grow and gain strength both physically and mentally. A large portion of the mental growth brings knowledge and wisdom. If we are lucky at some point we learn to accept that many of the things that happen to us, regardless of age, power, size and strength are not our fault.” “If we do not learn and accept these things there has been no point in growing up. If we can’t use our wisdom to recognize the vulnerability and innocence of others; our strength to protect it and find a way to absolve the foolish parts of ourselves that attempts to explain what happened as punishment for some perceived wrong doing we will continue to remain victims and perpetrators in a sense.” Iruka smiled sadly as he strained the tea into a cup, “I long ago I was told by someone who loved me very much and that I loved even more that only an incredible dumbass could find a way to rape themselves.” “Most people put an end to an act when they feel pain. Rape is a lack of consent. If I am the one doing it or allowing it to be done it is not rape. It is something else. If I do not want it to happen, voice my refusal or if I am incapacitated and unable to refuse then it also means I am unable to consent thereby I have done nothing wrong, have nothing to be ashamed of and no need to feel embarrassed,” Iruka continued changing his tone of voice and pattern of speech to more closely match that of the original speaker. “That is the most confusing thing I ever heard,” Kakashi retorted as he tried to place the person Iruka was mimicking. He had heard that tone and inflection enough for it to be familiar but he was unable to recall the owner. “Yeah, I thought so too, then I started working with five year olds,” Iruka chuckled. “Besides I wouldn’t be worried about being embarrassed over something that’s happened to 98% of our profession. I’d be more concerned about admitting to being captured by Manzô. Wasn’t he listed in the checker book as world’s oldest genin up until a few years ago?” Kakashi made a strangled sound similar to one might expect to hear from a cat coughing up a hairball. The checker book was the opposite of the bingo book; it held the list of ninja not even worth being concerned over. Iruka rushed to his side with the cup of tea, “Here, drink this.” Now that Iruka was closer, Kakashi grabbed the chuunin’s hair, “If you tell anyone that clown captured me I will tell everybody you have sexual fantasies involving the Unholy Trio and Ibiki.” “You tricked me,” Iruka yelped trying not to spill the hot tea while attempting to wrest Kakashi’s fingers from his ponytail. “Yeah, I did,” Kakashi said letting go and gently rubbing Iruka’s scalp. He accepted the tea and held it both hands as he contemplated Iruka’s words. He took a sip of tea, swallowed and looked at his companion. “You said it was something that happened to 98% of our profession and that what you told me is someone had told you; so you?” “Yes,” Iruka replied quietly while lowering his head and staring into his teacup. “At times I still have nightmares about it, but thanks to the efforts of others when I wake up I know better than to believe I have anything to be ashamed of or that it was my fault. Even if I doubt myself I love and trust them enough to believe that.” Iruka raised his head and looked Kakashi in the eye, “One of those people was Sandaime. If he knew, I know he would say the same thing to you. I know that I am no one of importance to you, but please have enough faith in him to believe his words even though I am the one repeating them.” Kakashi nodded. Iruka was often in the company of the old man. It was so much so that when Asuma was younger and he and Third were not getting along Asuma would grumble about how easily his father had replaced him. Now that the Third was dead Asuma would sometimes seek Iruka’s company rather than his older siblings when he needed a bit of his father’s wisdom. He would acknowledge the truth in Iruka’s words in that they came directly from Sandaime. It sounded like something the old man would say, even if he weren’t sure he could totally accept them.Kakashi and Iruka were awakened the next morning by heavy knocking at the door. “Just a moment,” Iruka cried out sleepily then rolled his eyes when he looked at the clock. It was six am and they had visitors. He thought Anko and Naruto were the only ones who showed up all hours. At least these people wouldn’t be expecting free food. He hoped. “Who is it?” he yawned sliding the curtain back before moving to open the door. “Shinsuke,” the voice on the other side replied. “I have a package for you.” Iruka opened the door but to his delight and surprise the Snow ninja didn’t come in. Instead he bowed and thrust out a bundle wrapped in the brown packing paper that was used at the general store, “On behalf of myself and my teammates I apologize for what happened yesterday. Please accept these new towels as payment for what happened to the old ones and your floor.” Iruka blushed and muttered a quick “thank you” but before he could say anything else the boy or rather clone disappeared. Since he was already up he began gathering leftovers for breakfast and preparing more tea with crushed pills for the still sleeping Kakashi.
The rest of the day went by without any visible sight of ninja or lingering overhead chakra signatures. Iruka guessed that by now they had moved their search farther away from the area and closer to Konoha. He wished he had thought to give Shiba and Uuhei reverse summoning tags so he would know which route they had taken back to Konoha. If he knew where Kakashi’s false trail ended his next letter to his mother would include instructions to be aware of the area. He didn’t want any unsuspecting comrade passing by to be captured. He has also missed excellent opportunity to learn more about the ninja in the area, their abilities and gain the identities of their other benefactors if a surveillance team were sent. Despite their age difference, Suzume-Sensei and Akimichi Kantarou could portray a rather convincing newly married couple. She was younger and pretty but not a quite a spring chicken while he was older and big-boned but not quite old and fat. It was a combination which drew curious onlookers attempting to discern if she was a gold-digger or if he was a dirty old man showing off his trophy wife. Both were genuinely friendly and likable enough that those drawn in by curiosity soon became comfortable enough in their presence to begin revealing things about themselves. He was still berating himself for his stupidity when Kakashi woke up demanding breakfast. Iruka sighed, at least this mooch was one he was actually supposed to feed. It didn’t take long to warm the leftovers and prepare a of bowl gruel for Kakashi. Iruka did have to give the man credit. Unlike Naruto and Anko Kakashi happily ate his meal without complaining.
