Sasuke rubbed his temples as they entered the apartment. He’d had to have yet another parent teacher conference; this was the third time this month he would have to have a serious talk with his son.
“Come here, Naruto,” he said as he loosened his tie, before he lowered himself onto one knee. The small boy pulled at the fuzz on his small teddy bear as he hesitantly made his way over to Sasuke. “Naruto, why are you lying to the teachers and other students?”
Baby blue eyes stared at the ground as the boy shrugged his shoulders.
Sasuke tried again. “Naruto, lying is bad. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to tell you.” Sasuke frowned. “You need to go to timeout and think about what you’ve done.” Sasuke stood, pointing towards Naruto’s bedroom. “Go and sit on your bed.”
The boy dropped the bear. “No.”
Sasuke blinked a few times in surprise at the response. “It wasn’t a choice, Naruto. Go to your room.”
“No.”
Naruto bolted into the kitchen, Sasuke standing up and following the young boy. “Naruto, this isn’t a game! You're in trouble.”
“Who cares? They lie all the time!” the boy yelled, while making every attempt to escape as Sasuke caught him.
Wrapping his arms around the angry child, Sasuke replied, “Well, then their parents will with deal with them. But right now, you need to do what you’re told.”
“No! It’s stupid! You’re stupid!” The child shrieked, angrily kicking his feet. “I hate you!”
Sasuke made it to the bedroom and sat Naruto down on the bed. “Well, regardless, I still love you.” Sasuke made his way to the door, shutting it firmly behind him, leaving the blond-haired child pouting.
He had to ask himself what he was doing, and whether he was even going about this the right way. Timeout was the only thing he could bring himself to do punishment-wise, and even then, most of the time Naruto would be out of his bedroom two minutes later. He often wondered how his parents had raised two boys when he was having a hard time raising just one.
Sasuke moved to the kitchen, grabbing the leftover lasagna for dinner. He just didn’t understand why Naruto was lying; he was telling everyone that Sasuke had been in an accident, or in a fire, or some other situation that would fatally wound him, and that his mother was-- Sasuke couldn’t even repeat it in his mind. He had no clue where Naruto had even learned a word like that.
He switched on the oven, sliding in the food to heat up. Naruto wouldn’t even tell him why he was lying; he would just say he wouldn’t do it again and then, a week later, Sasuke would be being called by the school again. Sasuke grabbed a water bottle and a fruit punch drink for Naruto as he leaned on the counter, trying to figure out what to do with his son.
Naruto had been much easier to handle when he was in diapers. Sasuke had adopted the little ball of sunshine when he was three months old; it had been the best decision in his life and he truly loved his son. He just really wished he knew what he was doing.
Sasuke stood, moving towards the doorway, where the bear was laying on the ground. He picked it up, smiling as he placed it on the couch. He guessed he wouldn’t ever really know what he was doing. But it didn’t really matter, as long as he had his son safe at home with him. That’s all parents could ever really do, wasn’t it? Keep them safe, healthy and happy-- when they weren’t getting into trouble.
Sasuke walked back into the kitchen, turning off the oven and taking the heated food out, then sliding it on the stove-top to cool. He started towards Naruto’s room, but instead he found the sniffling boy in the hallway.
“I’m sorry.” A small fist rubbed over watery blue eyes as Sasuke lowered himself to the ground, instantly finding the boy in his arms. Sasuke ruffled messy blond hair as he pulled the boy to sit in his lap. “They won’t play with me if I don’t lie.”
Sasuke sighed rubbing Naruto’s back comfortingly. “Then you don’t need to play with them. There are plenty of kids who will like you for who you are, Naruto.” Sasuke pulled back slightly, using his sleeve to wipe his son's eyes and nose, earning a giggle with the action. “No more lying, okay? And if anyone picks on you, just tell your teacher or me.”
Naruto nodded, hugging his father’s neck. “Sorry for lying…I don’t hate you, daddy. Love you.”
“I know,” Sasuke smiled, hugging his son. “I love you too.”
