Sakura lay in bed fighting it. She wasn’t going to get sick. She couldn’t, it was that simple. She had too much to do. The wedding was in three weeks.
She’d managed, despite Ino’s nagging, despite her mother’s ‘polite’ suggestions, to keep it simple. But even simple with the number of friends that they had—nearly half the ninja corps— was still no small undertaking.
Naruto had taking the news of their engagement rather well, considering. There were comments about perverts and questions about just how gooey they’d be when they were on missions, but other than that, he’d handled it very well.
Her stomach churned again and she groaned softly. This was a really bad time for it. It must have been something Ino cooked the night before. They’d had dinner with Ino and Chouji and she had, of course, cooked just about everything imaginable.
But a moment later, despite her attempts at holding it in, she practically leapt out of bed and bolted for the bathroom. Kakashi was behind her in a few seconds, squatting next to her, holding her hair back. “Sakura? Are you okay?”
She shook her head. “Must have eaten something bad last night. Ugh. This is not the time for this.” She lost it again and reached blindly for the toilet paper, which Kakashi handed her. “Water,” she croaked.
He filled a glass and handed it to her, at a loss. “Can I do anything?”
She shook her head. “When I can get my face out of the porcelain god, I’ll check my stomach.”
It took her a few more minutes, but she finally sat back. She rinsed her mouth thoroughly, then took a sip of the water. When it stayed down, she drank a little more. Finally, she tilted her head back and Kakashi sat next to her, brushing the hair out of her face.
After taking a few deep breaths, she closed her eyes, focused her chakra and her hands glowed green. She passed them over her stomach, then opened her eyes, puzzled. “Doesn’t seem to be anything wrong.”
“Maybe you’ve gotten rid of it?” Kakashi suggested.
“Maybe.” But Sakura had a nagging suspicion. “Um, could you get me a fresh glass of water. From the kitchen?” she asked him.
He raised an eyebrow, but did as she asked. While he was gone, she moved her hands lower, then her eyes widened. She concentrated, studying it for a moment, and then released the technique.
When he came back in and handed her the glass, she drank a bit more and stared at him. How would he react to this? She closed her eyes a moment and gathered her courage. “It’s not something I ate.”
“Oh?” He raised an eyebrow, and waited.
“I--” she cleared her throat. “I’m pregnant.”
He blinked at her, saying nothing for a full minute. “You’re pregnant?” His gaze went from her face to her belly and back to her face. “Really?”
She nodded. “Yup. And if it’s a boy, we’re going to have to name it Jiraiya.”
That caught his attention. “What?”
“It’s his fault.” She waited a minute and wasn’t disappointed.
“Oh. Well, damn.” Then the grin split his face and he pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly. “A baby.”
She grinned up at him. “I take it your happy about it.”
He chuckled. “Yes, I think you can say that.” He paused, as he realized she hadn’t said anything about her own feelings. “Are—are you okay with this?” Around the time the baby was born, he’d be voluntarily taken off the roster for a while, but he knew that this meant that her status as a ninja would be very different for a lot longer than that.
She took a deep breath, carefully considering it. “Yes, I am.” She smiled up at him. “I can’t think of a better reason to be grounded than that.”
He grinned. “Well, then, Mommy, let’s go get some more rest. You’re going to need it.”
“Mommy? Dear gods, I’m not ready for that, yet.” She shook her head. “I just figured it out. I have almost eight months before that’s an issue, thank you.”
He laughed. “Either way, we have a very busy few weeks and you’ll need rest. Let’s go back to bed.”
“Are we going back there for rest? Or something else?” She grinned.
“What do you think?” He picked her up, then and carried her back into the bedroom. “Is the nausea better now?” She nodded. “Good,” he said as he laid her back on the bed.
There was, of course, no rest involved.

Sakura eased herself down into the chair. She was too big for a booth, now, and only took small comfort in the fact that Ino was bigger than she was. She glared across the table at Hinata, still somewhat small, despite the twins growing in her.
“Tsunade is going to kill us,” Tenten said from her chair. She rubbed her hand over her swollen belly.
Sakura laughed. “She’s already glaring daggers at Ino and I.” She shifted in her seat and rested her hand on her own huge stomach. “God, I feel like a whale.”
“Don’t I know it,” Temari said. “I thought Shikamaru would be too lazy to father twins, damn him. The only consolation I have is that they’re relatively quiet.”
Ino growled. “I don’t want to hear a word from any of you about feeling big.” She was, in fact, the biggest of all of them. “I knew the Akimichi’s were big, but dear gods this is crazy. I now go to the bathroom, like clockwork, fifteen minutes after taking a drink of anything. I’ve told Chouji that if he so much as blinks in my direction for a year, I’ll simply kill him.”
They all laughed. Hinata sighed. “Who would have thought it? If someone had told me nine months ago that we would be sitting around a table at the tea house now, married and less than a month from giving birth—all of us, I would have said they were crazy.”
“I still think we’re crazy. What the hell got into us?” Temari asked, shaking her head and sipping at her tea.
This was greeted with silence. “Um, our husbands got into us,” Tenten said, completely deadpan.
That caused another round of laughter. “Oh gods, don’t do that,” Ino said, holding her side. “Every time I laugh like that, he rolls and starts kicking again.”
“Hey, he’s nothing,” Tenten said, pointing at her belly. “Taijutsu master here already. And he knows exactly where to kick to make me the most miserable.” As she spoke, they could see the bumps where he pushed against her skin. “See? Settle down!” she scolded her belly.
Sakura glanced down at her own belly again. They didn’t know if it was a boy or a girl, had chosen not to find out. They had names picked out and would be happy with either. Kakashi was beside himself these days, not wanting to let her out of his sight. He’d been true to his word and had put most of his past behind him.
There were still a few rough spots. She’d almost miscarried in her fourth month after she landed wrong during training and they’d both been scared shitless. It was the worst three days of her life as they watched the spotting slow and stop. Tsunade had kept her in the hospital and Kakashi had refused to leave the whole time. But it had stopped and the baby was perfectly healthy. She’d been extremely careful since then.
She glanced around at her friends. She found she almost wanted to thank the rogue-nin for their rampage. It had kicked started something for them that may never have happened. Or, at the very least, would have taken quite a bit longer. She would never have wished on the rape victims what happened to them. But she couldn’t help but be glad she was where she was.
They spent their lunch together laughing over their husband’s antics, even Shikamaru who was no longer quite so lazy, now that Temari couldn’t do much. She’d been on restricted activities for the last few weeks after false labor had started. The twins, while they were apparently calm inside, weren’t so lazy when it came to wanting out.
Tsunade was annoyed at them, to a point. She kept grumbling about how ten of her best shinobi were out of commission. But Sakura had laughed when she’d overheard Shizune tell her it was her own fault. Sakura had finally cornered Tsunade and, after a large bottle of sake, found out that the guys who were held back that night were no coincidence. She’d arranged the whole damned thing, even Sakura and Kakashi. She spent a good portion of that evening trying to apologize for what Sakura had gone through, but Sakura finally convinced her it wasn’t her fault, it was Kakashi’s and Sakura’s own.
When lunch ended, all five men were there like clockwork to collect their wives. Sakura stretched her back a little, thinking again that she couldn’t wait to get the damned baby out of her. Kakashi offered, again, to carry her but she just glared at him and started walking. She needed the exercise.
When they got home and she settled down on the couch, he started in on his favorite activity these days. He leaned over and kissed her large belly, then started talking to the baby. He told them all about his father and Rin and Obito and how if they wanted to be shinobi they could but that they didn’t have to. And as he did, Sakura enjoyed her own favorite activity, watching him—his wonder at their child, the changes that had taken place over the last eight months.
Yamato had built them a house as a wedding gift. The baby gift from him was a beautiful crib. They nin-ken wouldn’t go far from her, either, these days, anxiously awaiting the ‘little human’ as they called it. Pakkun especially was never far away.
Something so horrible had turned into something very beautiful. As Sakura drifted off for her afternoon nap, a smile on her face, she sent up a prayer of thanks once more for it all.

Tsunade collapsed into her chair. She was going to kill her shinobi. It was that simple. She was exhausted. Every one of the five girls had gone into labor within hours of each other. Sakura was last, but she’d been too far gone to help with the others.
Her head fell onto her arms and before she knew it, she was asleep. So when Shizune shook her awake what felt like moments later, she was understandably grumpy. “Let me sleep, Shizune. I’m exhausted. Just a few minutes, please.”
“Lady Tsunade, it’s been two hours.” Ton-ton added her two cents in and Tsunade glared at the pig, who shrunk into Shizune’s arms.
Tsunade sat up and rubbed her face hard. “When they’re back at work, I swear, I’m drinking three large bottles of sake straight in a row. After I go take my frustrations out on the nin who are responsible for this.”
“Lady Tsunade?” Shizune asked, puzzled.
“There are still three of them alive in Konoha prison. It’s their fault. If they hadn’t been causing problems, I wouldn’t have had to ground the kunoichi in the first place.”
Shizune wisely said nothing to that. “Well, they all need to be checked over. Then you can sleep some.”
Tsunade groaned as she stood up. “I’m going to kill them.” She sighed. “Right after their kids are grown.”

Kakashi grinned as Jiraiya started fussing again. Like his namesake, he was happiest when he was near a breast. He turned to Sakura and handed the baby to her. She opened her shirt and set him to her breast where he latched on and sucked away happily.
Sakura shook her head. “Just like the master. Not happy unless he’s near one, huh?”
Kakashi laughed. “Yup.” He looked up at her. “Thank you.” He leaned over and kissed her gently on the forehead. “He’s beautiful.”
“Only because he looks like you,” she said, laughing. Jiraiya had silver hair and green eyes. He was going to break hearts when he grew up, she just knew it.
“He’s got your eyes. And smile.”
“But thankfully, not my forehead.” She chuckled, but Kakashi just shook his head.
“I don’t know what you’re complaining about.” He kissed it again, then went back to watching his son nurse.
Kakashi was still scared. He could admit that, now. The thought of losing them did that to him. But he knew he’d do his best to keep them safe and that might just be enough. He knew she was strong in her own right and would fight to her last breath to protect them. And that they weren’t the only ones who would protect Jiraiya.
He didn’t know, for sure, what the future would bring. He hoped for a sister for Jiraiya someday. Or a little brother, instead. In the end, he was grateful for whatever he had with them. He was luckier than most, which he was reminded of every time he saw Kurenai and Asumaru walking around the village.
When Sakura switched Jiraiya to the other breast and settled down, he moved, too, to watch them. They were his life now and he couldn’t remember what it was like without them, without her. He couldn’t imagine why he had ever thought it was a good idea to walk away from it. He sent up a prayer of thanks to whoever had helped him wake up and realize it before it was too late.
