Chapter Twenty Four

�Watch out! He�s attacking again!�

The three students moved back, stumbling ever so slightly as they moved. Three kunai came at them followed by another three. There was no way that they�d be able to dodge them all, especially since no one had taken into consideration their teammates� handedness. Mahina narrowed her eyes at the kunai and stared when they stopped in midair before watching as they dropped harmlessly to the ground. �Go find him, Tsuki!� Giro said to the puppy in his jacket.

The puppy barked a couple of times before running off towards the trees, searching for the Jounin teacher. �Incoming at one o�clock!� Mahina shouted. �Shadow jutsu!�

�Not this time.� Suzaku said as he crouched down a little, lightening surrounding his fist.

The light flickered across the ground, weakening the shadow to the point it was nonexistent. �Alright! We countered a Jounin�s attack!� Giro cheered before realizing that he couldn�t put his arm down. �What the hell?!�

Their eyes flickered to where the shadow grew lighter and saw a small, thin line extending from the one they had been watching. �That�s cheating, you son of a bitch!� Suzaku shouted angrily.

Shikamaru looked at the three with a lazy expression before answering, �Never assume victory until you�re absolutely certain that your opponent is either dead or defeated. Greater shinobi than yourselves had made that mistake and they�ve either lost their lives or a limb.�

Mahina�s eyes narrowed as she looked at the shadow user. He knew that he had them rendered immobile, but his shadow jutsu did nothing against her power. She could force him back, make him let them go.

Naruto said to never use it against one of Konoha�s shinobi. A voice argued. Not unless you know that they want to hurt somebody in Konoha or any one of the Kages. You know that. But it�d be okay, right? This was training and surely Naruto wouldn�t complain if she used it in training. Besides, Shikamaru did say that bloodline abilities were okay. He wouldn�t have lied and said that they were if it wasn�t.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she reached out, the barest traces of a smirk showing on her lips when the mental rope wrapped around her target. Keeping her gentle blue eyes focused on Shikamaru, she tugged and watched it hurtling out from the trees.
He heard the trees give way before he saw the puppet charging at him. As he threw part of the shadow to catch the puppet, the wooden doll jerked off to the side. His dark eyes flickered to the dark-haired girl and saw the concentration in her eyes as her eyes watched the puppet. Watch the puppet, her eyes told him when their eyes met.

Shikamaru jumped back when the puppet crashed into the ground, forcing him to break the hand sign in favor of deflecting the kunai that as flying at him in the mixture of dirt and grass. When had the girl hid the puppet?

His eyes widened slightly when he remembered the Inuzuka boy telling the puppy to go. They must have worked out a plan that he hadn�t heard before.

With their shadows freed, the three moved back while the puppet took its place in front of them, its mouth wide open revealing a single kunai. Electricity crackled around Suzaku�s hands as his eyes narrowed while Mahina flicked her fingers, chakra strings connecting to the puppet.

Giro whistled and Shikamaru watched out of the corner of his eye as the puppy came charging. When the puppy was safely tucked back into Giro�s jacket, the three Gennin grinned slightly. �Very good.� Shikamaru complimented with a nod. �You three can relax now. You pass.�

�We didn�t immobilize you though.� Suzaku said cautiously.

�You three are working together willingly and not because it�s convenient. Tell me, who made up the plan? One, two, or all three of you?�

�The three of us.� Giro answered as if it were the most obvious thing on the planet.

Shikamaru nodded, watching as Mahina allowed the puppet to fall onto the ground, its mouth slack. He�d need to remember to talk to Kankuro about giving the girl a puppet that was a bit easier for her to move since he could see the small beads of perspiration on the girl�s forehead. Maybe he could talk the brunette into placing small bits of sand that Gaara used into the puppet so the girl would have something to help her.

As if taking the younger girl�s lead, Suzaku allowed the crackling chakra around his hands to dissipate. �So we pass.� Suzaku said slowly.

�You pass.� Shikamaru confirmed as he untied the three. �We�ll meet tomorrow morning at ten. Don�t be late.�

His dark eyes focused on Mahina causing the girl to grin a little. When the boys took off, the girl remained behind to pick up her puppet. �You knew what we were going to do.� Mahina accused calmly as she wrapped the puppet back up.

�What makes you say that?�

The girl walked silently next to him for a moment before answering, �I�ve been around you since Dad found me. I know that you�re usually two or three steps ahead of everybody else. Three newbies� that�s hardly a challenge for you.�

Shikamaru chuckled a little before answering, �You could probably give me a run for my money when you decide to stop playing around.�

Mahina frowned slightly before answering, �Being smart is boring. Besides, my goal is to be in ANBU.�

�Then you need to stop playing around. You could have easily made Katsu do more but you chose to hold back. If you keep holding back, then the rest of your potential will wither away and you�ll be left with the bits you only chose to develop.�

The girl looked away for a moment before answering, �Maybe I�m scared of what I can do. What I was told when I was little, what Pein told me� I know he�s right. I know why suddenly every Chuunin and above is suddenly watching my every move.�

�Why�s that?�

�Hiro says it�s cause some woman said that Konoha might have the wrong one and if Konoha does, then the world is going to die.�

Shikamaru looked at her, seeing the sorrow hidden in her eyes. �What do you think?� Shikamaru questioned.

Mahina frowned even more before answering slowly, �I don�t like the Bijuu being locked up like they�re animals or prisoners. I think it�s wrong to try and control them when they clearly just want to be left alone.�

The man sighed a bit before answering, �Well, I know one thing for certain, Hi-Hi.�

�What?�

�We don�t have the wrong one. I know that we have the one that knows right from wrong and will wait as long as it takes to make things right again.�

The girl grinned and nodded, clearly comforted. �Yeah! I can hardly wait until we start taking hard missions though! I heard that there�s demons all over the place that hide from humans.� Curiosity showed in her eyes. �Have you ever seen a demon? I don�t mean Ichibi or Kyuubi when his chakra surrounds Dad either.�

Shikamaru chuckled a little before answering, �Maybe I have, maybe I haven�t.�

Protests left the girl�s lips as she tried to get the answer out of the Jounin only to have him use a teleportation jutsu. Groaning in frustration, she hurried home to take a warm bath and enjoy the relaxing company of her family.

Tomorrow, she vowed, she�d get the answer she wanted.
