A/N: All right, last
chapter of this one. There’s no
Sasuke/Gaara smut in this at all. I’m
sure you all wanted it, but I have a reason (which I’m selfishly keeping hidden)
to not putting it in here. I hope you
all enjoyed. I’ll still be writing the
other three, so you’ll be hearing from me soon.

Nejislady: I’m so glad you reviewed all the way through this
story. I might have a surprise for you
in the future regarding this story, but it depends on my time constraints when
it will happen. Maybe I’ll even do it
today, if the idea that just popped into my head comes out quickly. :)
Epilogue
Life for Shikamaru became something much more exciting,
surprisingly, than when he had been a ninja.
He worked for the Hokage in the capacity as strategic advisor and was
home every night before supper. Usually
he was done around 4. Sometimes he was
even done as early as 2. He helped with
the assessment and creation of teams for missions.
Neji had decided he still wanted to be a ninja but take
fewer missions so that he could be home with his husband most of the time. He started teaching at the academy. Iruka was thrilled to have one of his former
students teaching with him. It had been
five years and they hadn’t regretted their choices even once. Minus the child, this was the normal, boring
life Shikamaru had often dreamed of – if you could count anything with Neji as
boring, that is.
Shikamaru pushed the door to his house open. He got stuck working late tonight, and he
knew Neji would be waiting for him. “Neji,
have you heard from Sasuke yet today?”
Neji smiled as he came around the corner, wooden spoon in
hand. “No, but come on. Supper’s on the table.”
Shikamaru sighed and took his shoes and coat off. Sasuke was supposed to be in Konoha this week
with the Kazekage, but he hadn’t heard from his friend. He knew Sasuke would contact him when he
showed up, but this was getting ridiculous.
The week was almost over. What if
something had happened to Sasuke? He
sighed. He really wished he still had
the full use of his chakra system. Through
training with Tsunade he’d gotten the basics back. He couldn’t henge or transport or anything
super useful, but he could gather chakra in his hands and feet. It was a step in the right direction that was
long in coming.
Shikamaru stopped dead in his tracks when he came through
the door into the kitchen. “Wha?” He was surprised for the first time in his
life. Gaara and Sasuke were sitting at
the table along with Itachi and Genma and Naruto and Shino. “When did you get here?”
Sasuke smiled. “A few
hours ago. We decided it would be fun to
give the genius strategizer a big surprise.”
Gaara was smiling too.
He had his hand resting on top of Sasuke’s, stroking it gently. “We wanted to tell of Sasuke’s most important
people at one time.”
Shikamaru looked between the two and he knew. It was time for Sasuke to officially become a
sand ninja by marrying their Kazekage. Honestly
he was surprised it had taken him this long.
“Well then it’s a good thing I’m home, I guess.” He smiled and took his place beside Neji on
the opposite side of the table from Shino and Naruto.
Sasuke smirked. “You
know all ready.” Shikamaru nodded. Sasuke shrugged. “I guess it wasn’t that hard to figure
out.” He smiled again. “Gaara’s asked me to marry him, and I’ve said
yes.”
Itachi smiled.
“That’s wonderful news, little brother.”
The same general consensus was heard around the table. Itachi looked at Gaara. “I’m glad you’ve seen what’s good in
Sasuke. I’ll be happy to call you
brother.”
Gaara’s smile was small, but there none-the-less. “It would be an honor to have a brother like
you.”
Everyone reached for the food on the table. Naruto was strangely quiet after having
picked up some of Shino’s habits. After
a few minutes of eating quietly, Naruto finally spoke up. “So, you fucked him yet, Sasuke?”
Gaara choked on his food as everyone else tried hard not to do the same while
starting to laugh. Sasuke rubbed Gaara’s
back as he started breathing again, while glaring at his friend. “You always were good with your tact,
Naruto.”
Itachi chuckled before glancing at Sasuke. “So, have you?”
Sasuke sighed and rolled his eyes. He turned to Gaara who had recovered. “Why did I decide I wanted to see my friends and
family again?”
Gaara smiled softly.
“Because you love them, faults and all.”
Sasuke sighed and nuzzled against Gaara’s chest. Gaara wrapped his arms around Sasuke’s
shoulders. “The food is really
good. You should eat some more of it.”
Neji chuckled. “At
least my cooking is good for something.”
Shikamaru reached over and grabbed his hand. “I can calm my husband’s appetite and
apparently diffuse embarrassing situations.”
Genma smirked. “If
you’re moving to Suna, can I have your room to keep my stuff in? I’m still keeping my apartment you know, but
I’m sick of sharing any space with all those bachelors; I’m afraid of what’s on
my stuff half the time. Naruto wouldn’t
let me move my stuff into your place, though.”
Sasuke smiled. “Yeah. I guess it won’t be my room anymore anyway.”
Gaara gently rubbed Sasuke’s hand. He knew his fiancé was having trouble with
making the move permanent, even if he hadn’t lived here in five years. Naruto growled at Genma from across the
table. “You know, I still don’t want you
moving your shit in. You and Itachi need
to find your own fucking place. It’s
been five goddamn years.”
Gaara chuckled softly.
“Naruto, you’ve got such a dirty mouth.”
Naruto blushed and rubbed the back of his head. Gaara smiled.
“And in answer to the question you asked so bluntly earlier, no we
haven’t.”
Neji smirked and winked at Gaara. “It’s good once you finally do. Waiting for your wedding night?”
Gaara nodded. “I guess I am slightly
‘old-fashioned’ as they say. Sasuke’s
working on me, but I am not so well versed in many things in this world.” Sasuke chuckled softly before Gaara
continued. “I was hoping to invite you
all to the wedding. Sasuke and I have
decided we’d just like a small, simple wedding with only our closest friends
and family in attendance.”
Shikamaru smiled. “Of
course we’ll be there.” His smile turned
into a wicked smirk. “And bearing gifts
like the ones he got Neji and me for our wedding.”
Sasuke sputtered. “I
don’t think that will be necessary, Shika.
I mean, Gaara and I aren’t you and Neji.”
Neji smirked before taking his husband’s hand.
“No, you’ll need them more.”
Gaara and Sasuke blushed as the rest of the table began laughing. Neji sighed and stood. “Help me bring out desert, Shika.”
Shikamaru stood up and followed Neji into the kitchen. He wasn’t prepared to be slammed against the
wall and attacked by Neji’s lips, but he wasn’t complaining either. When Neji finally released his mouth he
smiled, “What brought that on, not that I’m complaining?”
Neji shrugged. “I'm just
glad that I’m the one you’re with, and I guess glad that Gaara is the one
taking Sasuke. I was so worried for a
while that you’d leave me and go back to Sasuke.”
Shikamaru frowned. He
hated the thought of causing Neji any pain.
“I couldn’t have even thought about leaving you after we got
together. It was hard to break up with
Sasuke, but Neji, I love you more than anything.” He leaned in to capture Neji’s lips in
another kiss. Neji moaned softly, and
Shikamaru pulled back and sighed. “You
can’t moan. That’s all it takes to get
my cock hard as a rock.” He pulled
Neji’s hand down to his crotch to emphasize his point.
Genma chuckled from the doorway. Neither was sure when he’d come in, but
judging from the look in his eyes, he’d seen enough. “Don’t let me stop you, but I’ll take desert
out to the table.” Genma grabbed the
custard he saw on the counter and went back to the party with a wink.
Shikamaru chuckled as Neji buried his face into his chest in
embarrassment. Shikamaru kissed Neji’s
temple. “We’ll finish this later.” He
pulled his husband back to the meal and smirked at Gaara’s blush. “Genma told you, didn’t he?” The entire table burst out laughing.
*************************
Sasuke stood incredulously in front of their new Hokage. “You could have told me last night.”
Naruto smirked. “Yes,
but this was more entertaining.”
Sasuke sighed. “When
were you appointed?”
Naruto smiled. “Just
a few days ago. Tsunade decided she’d
rather spend her time in the hospital.
She’s been missing it for a while and she hates the paper work, so it
worked. She didn’t have much trouble
convincing the new counsel either.”
Sasuke quirked a brow.
“Who’s the new counsel? I didn’t
know the old one was gone.” He
sighed. He really had missed a lot
living in Suna the last five years.
Naruto shrugged. “We
try to keep you informed, but some things just slip our mind. They died of heart attacks about two weeks
apart. Now the counsel is made up of
Shikamaru’s father, Kakashi, and Tsunade and Jiraiya.”
Sasuke smiled. That
would make his transfer between villages much easier. The younger generations of ninja didn’t look
upon Naruto as a monster and they saw him as more than the last Uchiha. It didn’t hurt that the last five years had
proved Suna an invaluable asset. “So,
I’m here to formally resign my position as a Konoha ninja.”
Naruto nodded. “You
know you and Gaara are welcome back here anytime you need a break or just want
to get away.”
Sasuke pulled Naruto into a hug. “I’ll
hold you to that.” Sasuke pulled away
and straightened Naruto’s robes. “We’ll
see you all in Suna in two weeks, right?”
Naruto nodded. “I’ve got the guest list
and I’ll keep everyone on it off missions the best I can. Tsunade has promised to take my place while
I’m on vacation.”
There was a knock on the door. Gaara
opened the door and smirked at Naruto.
“Finally caught up with me?”
Naruto laughed.
“Something like that.” He pulled
Gaara into a hug as well. “You’ll be
good to my friend, right? I wouldn’t
want to have to start a war between villages because you hurt him.” He winked, hoping Gaara was better at
catching sarcasm than he was before.
Gaara smirked.
“You’re lucky. Sasuke has taught
me all kinds of interaction, including the sarcasm you just used. I might have strangled you with sand
otherwise.” He nudged Naruto just a
little. “We’ll see you soon.”
***************
Naruto smiled as Gaara and Sasuke kissed on their wedding
day, signifying their permanent union.
He’d never seen either of his friends look so happy. He saw the rest of his friends and
family. They’d all tied the knot, but he
and Shino hadn’t gotten there yet. It
wasn’t as if they weren’t going to be together for the rest of their
lives. They’d all ready decided they
wanted no one else in the world. Naruto
just hadn’t been asked yet, and he didn’t really feel like asking Shino just
yet. To be honest, he was a little
scared of making something permanent with another person. If people knew Shino was his husband,
Konoha’s enemies could use that against Shino.
He didn’t want to cause that kind of pain.
Naruto turned his head to spectacled lover when Shino grabbed his hand. Shino smiled softly, briefly at Naruto. He knew when his lover started warring with
himself over their relationship. He
kissed Naruto’s cheek and whispered, “I can’t wait for you forever, so I’m
going to ask you. I won’t do it today
and take away from their day, but I’m going to do it this week.”
Naruto smiled softly and kissed Shino. “I love you.”
He turned back to see Gaara and Sasuke being presented as Mr. and Mr. Sabaku. Sasuke, like Itachi, had no plans to tie his
children to the Uchiha name. He smiled
at his friends as they left the small church their wedding had been performed
in.
Gaara smiled at Sasuke as danced the last dance of the
night. It was one of the few times in
his life he had been intoxicated, but he was enjoying it. “Sasuke, I love you.”
Sasuke smirked, the alcohol affecting him far worse than it
was affecting Gaara, “I know, baby. ‘s
good.” He stumbled a little and giggled
as Gaara’s sand righted them. He noticed
that Itachi and Genma were laughing at him, but he didn’t care. “Les go home.
Who cares ‘bout these people?”
Gaara chuckled. “You
do. You invited them.”
Sasuke snorted. “You
like ‘em too, or youdda said no.” He
leaned in and captured Gaara’s lips in a punishing kiss. “Come on.
If we walk by the time we get home the alcohol will be out of our
systems and I can show you a really good time.”
Gaara shook his head and smiled before nodding. “Say goodbye to Shikamaru first though.” Sasuke’s eyes snapped open at the
comment. Gaara shrugged. “When Genma told us that Neji had to feel for
himself that Shikamaru was only interested in him, it rang true throughout my
body. I know you love me. I know you just got married to me, and yet
there’s part of me that worries that Shikamaru may win you back.”
Sasuke frowned. “I’ll
do it to humor you, but Gaara I left my village for you. Please don’t think, ever, that I don’t love
you.” Gaara nodded and pushed Sasuke
toward the table Shikamaru and Neji were sitting at. Sasuke smiled. “Can I borrow Shikamaru for a minute?”
Neji nodded. Gaara
had spoken to him earlier in the evening and he was prepared for this interruption. Shikamaru kissed Neji softly. “I’ll be back as soon as possible.” He walked out into the night air with Sasuke
beside him. He looked at the man being
illuminated by the moonlight and remembered one of the first things he’d fallen
in with when he was with Sasuke. It was
always incredible how much peace seemed to spread across the face in soft
moonlight. “Gaara’s a lucky man.”
Sasuke sighed and turned toward Shikamaru. He loved when the man would wear his hair
down. That hair was long, beautiful, and
silky to touch. “Neji, too.” He sighed and sat down on the steps. “It’s such a long time ago that I left the
two of you on that bridge.”
Shikamaru nodded sadly as he dropped down beside Sasuke. “But you never really left me, Sasuke. You’ve always been my first love, and that’s
something that won’t change. Our lives
are simply propelling us forward.
Forever you’ll be one of my best friends.”
Sasuke wiped at the tears in his eyes. “It’s the alcohol,” he said as if he had
never cried in front of Shikamaru before.
Shikamaru chuckled. “Have
you ever considered what would have happened if we had stayed together?”
Sasuke frowned. “I
did at first. I did a lot. I was always so jealous of Neji. I’d see him holding your hand, touching the
small of your back, kissing you when he thought no one else was looking, and laughing
with you at the stupid jokes you would make.
It hurt.”
Shikamaru nodded, his own tears beginning to fall. “I never wanted to break up with you, but I
just couldn’t take it after that incident.
I’m happy with Neji now and I no longer worry about what will happen in
your life. For nearly a year my world
was wrapped up in keeping you safe and it hurt so badly when it crumbled.” He sighed and ran a hand through his
hair. “It’s all better this way. I think you can see that too. We would have worked, but it wouldn’t be what
we have now. We just needed to give each
other something. You gave me confidence
and I gave you the knowledge that love could be a good thing.”
Sasuke chuckled softly.
“You mean you gave me a sore ass.”
Shikamaru couldn’t help but laugh back. “I love you, Sasuke. Go home with your husband and enjoy this
night, all right. You’ve been through a
lot and you deserve someone who can love you as well as Gaara can.”
Sasuke smiled as he stood up and turned to go back
inside. “I think you and Neji are
perfect for each other, too.”
Shikamaru sighed as he felt Sasuke’s presence disappear only
to be replaced by Neji’s. Neji wiped the
remnants of the tears away. “Everything
okay, sweetie?”
Shikamaru nodded and pulled Neji close. “I love you so much.” Neji smiled and waited for Shikamaru to
continue, not pushing but rather just enjoying the closeness of his
husband. Shikamaru laid his head back on
Neji’s shoulders and smiled as the arms wrapped around his waist. “He’s saying goodbye again. It’s hard, but I’m so glad that I have you.” He twisted his head to kiss Neji softly. “I wouldn’t change anything in the world if
it meant you wouldn’t be here with me.”
Neji nodded. “Me
either. You want to go back to the
hotel?”
Shikamaru nodded. He
took Neji’s hand and held tight as they walked down the road. He turned over his shoulder when he heard
Gaara and Sasuke walking down the same road.
He smiled softly to Gaara and nodded.
Gaara smiled back at Shikamaru understanding the message for what it was
‘Don’t hurt him’ and ‘goodbye’. Shikamaru
turned to Neji. “Let’s leave tomorrow
morning. We can take our time getting
back then. It’ll be like a little
vacation for us, right?”
Neji nodded and pulled closer to Shikamaru. He knew his husband was happy and that was
really all that mattered in the world.
