“Set up the decoy.” Sasuke ordered only to twitch in annoyance when he saw that the decoy campsite was already set up and sitting down in a hidden ditch. The blonde was already handing Sakura some food. “What are you doing?” He demanded, feeling a little annoyed that Naruto wasn’t treating him like the leader.
“Eating. Get out of the decoy campsite.” Naruto snapped as he sent out clones that looked like them to sit near the fire.
Sasuke snarled, “You should share.” He said wanting one of the pork buns Naruto unsealed. One of the buns was already being eaten by Sakura. Yes, she smiled and silently offered half of hers, but he suspected Naruto actually had more.
“You have food. I saw 8 snack cakes and some other things and I saw you eat only all except 3 snack cakes.” Naruto commented before taking a big bite out of his pork bun.
Pride kept the Uchiha from digging into his own supply. However, Naruto didn’t give in. It wasn’t until the sun started going down that Sasuke finally fished out a snack cake and ate his own treats. The whole situation fueled the rather tense atmosphere, but Naruto realized it might be a good thing. Everything was so awkward that Sasuke and Sakura didn’t notice what happened next.
Several insects crawled onto his hand. They formed only one word, which was ‘sage’. That simple message was followed by the insects moving around to form an arrow.
Naruto finished his pork bun and sighed, “This should be the last decoy we need. If we wake up early then we can make it to the tower in time for breakfast. Of course, if we just leave now we might be the first ones there. Now that would be impressive-”
“Let’s move.” Sasuke ordered as he stood up and he smirked when Naruto followed suit just like he should.
A very tired Sakura blinked in shock, “Now? Ah!” Sakura yelped as Naruto actually threw her up in the air where she landed over his shoulder and he followed after Sasuke.
Once team 7 was out of sight another Naruto popped out of the bushes, “That was easy. My clone can handle them.” He said to the insects on his sleeve revealing that when he threw Sakura he swapped out with a clone. “Tell team 8 that I’m heading to the tower after a few tweaks to my trap.” He said to the insects, knowing that the insects were probably sent ahead to warn him. No doubt team 8 was headed to him to help and he wanted to keep them away from Orochimaru’s attack. It’s not like they needed to worry. Naruto didn’t plan on staying around either.
Much to Naruto’s amusement, only about half of the insects flew off to find team 8. The rest of the insects stayed on his jacket. It was as if they were guarding him or something. Whatever their motive was, their presence didn’t slow him down at all.
Naruto dispelled the clones he had near the fake campsite, “Ok, what were the hand signs again? … I remember.” Naruto murmured to himself before starting a series of hand signs.
One of the hand signs was the classic sign for a clone. After completing the sequence three pink crystals sprouted out from the ground. Barely a minute later the crystals turned into Sasuke, Sakura and Naruto. The second the new clones went over to the fire and pretended to sleep, Naruto zipped up his jacket.
“Hold on.” The blonde warned the bugs, who wisely crawled into his jacket a split second before Naruto bolted through the treetops.
At the speed Naruto was moving at, it took no time at all to catch up with his teammates. With some excellent stealth only the clone holding Sakura knew he was there. Thankfully, the insects saw their cue and left his jacket. The blonde saw them fly away at an angle so they weren’t spotted, but he hoped that they were headed to report to the hokage. For now he focused on swapping places with his clones.
Sakura spluttered when the blonde carrying her jumped too high resulting in a head full of leaves, “Watch it, idio-“ She couldn’t finish that word. It was too painful after Sasuke called her that, but that trauma worked in Naruto’s favor. After all, she never noticed that the clone was swapped out for the real Naruto.
“Be quiet.” Sasuke snapped, getting annoyed because Naruto was clearly trying to get ahead of him.
Every time Naruto got close to pulling ahead Sasuke would speed up. What the Uchiha didn’t realize was that Naruto was doing this deliberately. Poking Sasuke’s pride seemed to be the best way to get the Uchiha to move as fast as possible. The farther they got away from Orochimaru’s attack the better. Granted, Naruto did find it funny that Sasuke didn’t realize his true goal considering the blonde did beat him in a race already.
“I made it.” Sasuke said the second he pushed the door to the tower open. Apparently, he refused to give Naruto any credit or even acknowledge that the blonde had put Sakura down inside already. “Now what do we do now?” He muttered when he saw the large empty room with only a tapestry hanging on the wall. Before he could examine the tapestry Naruto threw two open scrolls at it. “You fucking idiot! We aren’t supposed to-“ The sound of a poof stopped Sasuke’s tirade and everyone saw Iruka standing there.
“You guys made it! I’m so proud!” Iruka exclaimed proudly while slightly tearing up. “Now let me explain the point of this puzzle-“ Iruka paused when he heard footsteps and they all looked behind Iruka. “Hokage-sama? I was just explaining-“
Hiruzen smiled as team 8 suddenly came through the doors and joined Naruto, “Perfect timing. Don’t mind us, Iruka. You finish explaining everything to Sasuke and Sakura. We have something quite serious to discuss.” He said seriously as he guided Naruto and team 8 to the doors out of that room.
Iruka looked uncertain for a moment, but then his eyes widened, “Oh! Naruto will need-“
“I will inform him where team 7’s room is.” Hiruzen said without looking at Iruka. Once the door closed and they went deeper into the tower some insects came out of a room. “Your insects wasted no time finding Torune and reporting in.”
The insects returned to Shino, “I’m glad they were fast enough.” He commented as they followed the hokage into the same room his insects came out of. When they entered the room they saw Torune there.
The older insect user quickly shut the door behind them, “This room is secure, hokage-sama.” He said as Naruto took off his glasses and made a hand sign that made him dizzy.
“Naruto, what happened?” The hokage asked as Naruto summoned his crystal clones, which appeared in the lenses for a minute. After a hand sign the three crystal clones emerged through the lenses and stood in front of everyone.
Naruto canceled the jutsu and the image in the lenses, which was of the spot in the forest where the clones were laying, completely vanished, “The clones waited about 10 minutes.” Naruto paused for a second to rub his eyes. The technique was basically the Spy Glass jutsu, which is what made him dizzy and ultimately what allowed team 8 to get interested in him in the first place. “That is a pain in the ass to adjust to. Anyway, the Grass team actually confronted the clones first, but they quickly revealed that they were Sound ninjas. Orochimaru bit my crystal Sasuke clone on the neck, put a seal on my clone and … well my crystal clone is pretty tough, but I’m pretty sure Sakura’s clone would be dead if she was the real thing.” He said as the crystal clones dropped the realistic appearance of team 7 and just looked like pink crystal statues.
Kiba raised an eyebrow as he looked at the crack in the crystal Sakura statue’s chest, “Yeah, I don’t think she would’ve survived a punch that could crack this thick crystal.”
“Sadly, I agree.” Hiruzen said absentmindedly as he examined the black inky seal trapped inside the neck of the crystal statue of Sasuke. “Very interesting. Perhaps a curse seal .. Torune, take this to Danzo.”
“Yes, Hokage-sama.” Torune said and immediately went over to the statue. Of course, the statue would be awkward to carry as is, so Naruto removed the extra weight. “So when do I get all the details about how you two got together?!” He asked and no one could blame him for it. It would be very hard to resist the temptation to ask when you were waiting in the same room as your younger brother and his new boyfriend.
“I want answers too! It’s not fair that Akamaru knows and I don’t.” Kiba exclaimed only to get a few casual barks. Kiba huffed. “Yes, I know. We can’t talk about the ritual.” He muttered as Naruto quietly whittled away the crystal statue so only the chunk of crystal between the neck and shoulder was left.
Torune snapped his fingers as if he remembered something, “That’s right. The clan is going to travel to Pelidnota after all this to start our roles as diplomats for Konoha. Dad was hoping you and Naruto would come since you’ve been there already.”
A blush exploded on Shino’s face that only made his brother and teammates more curious, “We’ll talk later.” He said and actually looked relieved when Naruto handed over a crystal chunk with the seal, which meant his brother had to leave.
Hiruzen, who was very amused by the interaction, smiled, “About your status, Naruto. Thankfully, it looks like Orochimaru tried to mess with the spot where thought your seal was.” He said pointedly and everyone knew that seal would’ve failed even if it hit the real blonde. “As for the third and final round of the exams, some investigations have discovered a few things. The village of Sand is working with Orochimaru. However, we found the kazekage’s body.”
Naruto frowned, “You don’t believe Sand is aware of this.”
“No I do not.” The hokage said seriously as he pulled out a photo from his robes. “However, they soon will. Kurama is going to talk to Sand’s demon vessel, Gaara, a little bit later.” He commented showing them the photo of a redhead with dark circles around his eyes. “Considering Gaara’s seal is known to be very unstable I believe Orochimaru might time his attack with him going berserk, which will happen if he bleeds.”
Hinata frowned, “How should we stop this, hokage-sama?”
“Well thankfully someone narrowed down so many ninjas with unorthodox and … bare tactics.” Hiruzen commented and coughed sheepishly while glancing at the blonde, who didn’t even bother to look guilty or sorry as he canceled the 2 ¾ left of the crystal statues in the room.
A blushing Hinata squeaked as she looked at Naruto, “You did strip all of them.” She said as Shino blushed.
“If someone points something at me I’m going to strip them.” Naruto commented with a shrug, but while his comment was about the pointing of weapons it could be taken a few ways.
Hinata nodded, “I get that, but … you should’ve drawn on them.” She murmured revealing a bit of a prankster side.
As Kiba burst out laughing, Naruto face palmed, “I completely missed that opportunity! Hey, Gramps, can I go back out there?”
The hokage couldn’t help but laugh, “I’ll have you help design the next exam and there you can rectify this oversight. As for now let’s get this test over with. Thankfully, Naruto skimmed down the competitors down to the point where we can have the next round one day after it ends. When it starts there will be two rounds before Gaara comes up. The first round will, of course, be Naruto vs Sasuke.”
Kiba cheered as Akamaru barked excitedly, “Yes! Kick his ass!” He exclaimed excitedly.
The hokage chuckled, “I’ll take one recommendation for the other round, but I plan to put Gaara up against someone specific. Any thoughts?”
“I could use the chance to spar with Neji.” Hinata suggested sweetly.
Hiruzen nodded, “I'll make that round 2.” He commented, but everyone was a little taken back when a sadistic glint came to Hinata’s eye for a moment. “Right … well, here’s your keys for your rooms. You each get your own, but they have a connected common room so you could be separated or with your teammates.” The hokage said as he handed them their keys. “I’m sure you can figure it out.”
As Naruto took the card the hokage gave him he frowned, “Do you know who’s helping Orochimaru? The person who pretended to be an Akatsuki member?” Naruto asked while taking his card.
“After thinking about the conversation I heard over your crystal … If I’m right then it’s another old student of mine.” Hiruzen said softly, clearly a bit hurt that his own students could be behind this.
With that saddening thought team 8 and Naruto watched the hokage leave. After that they went to find their rooms. Funnily enough they noticed that just getting into their rooms was a puzzle. Granted, it was a simple puzzle, but still a puzzle.
On the way to the hall that had their rooms they looked at their hotel style room keys. A strange little poem was on the back of the keys. They were curious enough that they didn’t immediately see Sasuke and Sakura glaring at the door labeled with a big gold 7.
The keys’ poem said: ‘With me you can hide. With me you can see more. With my strength I support your path.’
After examining the poem they looked down the hallway. While ignoring the twits banging on the 7 door they took in all the other details. Besides the huge doors with fancy gold numbers there didn’t seem to be much. However, when their eyes spotted the little decorative carvings of trees going along the ceiling molding they had their answer.
Sasuke scowled and threw the hotel key on the floor, “Stupid keys don’t work.” He snapped only to tense when he finally noticed the presence of other people. He’d never admit it, but he was startled by his blonde teammate who was picking up the key he threw. “What took you so long, idiot?”
Of course, Naruto ignored Sasuke, “I’ll see you guys later.” Naruto said as he looked up at the tree carvings on the ceiling molding.
“Good luck dealing with those stupid teammates of yours.” Kiba said loudly, but when Sasuke and Sakura turned to glare at team 8 the team was gone.
“Oh. Why are you two over there anyway?” Naruto asked casually as he found and stood under the colorful, yet elegant, tree carving with a little 7 on it.
Sasuke scoffed as he watched Naruto stare at the blank wall between two doors, “It’s our room, you idiot. Go find someone to fix our keys-“
Naruto pressed Sasuke’s room key to the wall under the carving and instantly heard a click, “I do believe this is our room.” He said while sliding the hidden door open and walking inside.
“How the hell?” Sakura gasped as she followed the annoyed Uchiha into the room just before the door closed.
The blonde tossed the keys on the kitchen counter in their suite, “It was pretty obvious. The riddle on the key had the hint.” Naruto commented before opening the first bedroom door and took it before Sasuke even realized there it was possible to pick a room.
Sasuke and Sakura took a closer look at the keys on the counter. As a result Sasuke stormed off into a bedroom and threw a tantrum as Sakura sat on the couch trying to understand why everything is so different now …
