They crossed back into Fire country before stopping. They found the burnt out village they'd camped by before and settled down. As Iruka sat, he realized he'd taken a few hits from the Rock nin. He had some bruising, at least and he winced as he felt along his ribs.
"Iruka?" Kakashi asked, but the younger man shook his head.
"I'll be fine. Just some bruising, I think." But when he went to take a deep breath, he winced again.
"Let me check." Yamato approached him. When he would have argued, the look in the other man's eye stopped him. They were worried. He dropped his arms and started to unzip his vest.
They pulled his hands away, though and in a few seconds had him naked from the chest up. "Geez, you two are fast at that," he tried for a joke.
They chuckled, but when Yamato ran his fingers along the ribs on his right side, he winced again. "Fuck. That hurts."
"Broken," Yamato said shortly. "Three of them, at least."
"Damn, I wish Sakura were here." Kakashi said. He dug bandages out of his pack and between the two of them, wrapped his chest the best they could to try to pad the ribs. "We shouldn't wait. We should head back."
"I'll be fine for us to rest a bit. And we still don't know where the woman went." Iruka said, then coughed into his hand.
All three of them stared at the blood on his palm. "Let's go." Kakashi said quietly and no one argued this time.
Iruka called once more on his ANBU training to help him shove his emotions aside. This time, when he looked at the other two, they had similar blank looks on their faces. He wondered at it. After all they'd done the last few days, he didn't understand why now they'd feel the need to force their emotions aside so much.
They took to the trees, moving as quickly as they could. He only made it another hour, though, before he started to slow. He was having major trouble breathing and he had a feeling he knew why. Yamato put him on his back and they kept going.
Between the two, switching him back and forth, they got a good chunk of the way back to Konoha before they had to stop again. Iruka was having a lot more trouble breathing. He had to face the fact that at least one of his broken ribs had pierced a lung. He could still breath some, so he didn't think it was both, but at least one was in serious trouble.
But the jostling was making it worse. Every bump, every jump hurt. He'd passed out at one point on Kakashi's back, but woke up to the pain again when he launched off of another branch.
They landed in a small clearing and Kakashi set Iruka down gently. "We've got to get him back before long. I don't know how much damage there is internally."
"He's having trouble breathing. I heard him wheezing the last time I carried him." Yamato swallowed hard and stared at the still, pale face. He'd passed out again sometime since the last switch.
"We'll rest just a few and then get going again." He, too, couldn't look away from Iruka's face.
"We'll make it, right?" Yamato asked. There was a world of fear behind the question.
Kakashi stared at him. "Yes, we will." They fell silent, both of them watching the younger man struggle with breath. "Let's go."
Both of them were frustrated with how much slower they had to go. Having to carry the extra man meant that it would take longer. But finally, they saw the gates ahead. "Go ahead and get the medic-nins." Kakashi said and Yamato took off.
As he passed through the gates, the guards scrambled out from behind the desk. Fuck. One of them was Raido. "What happened?" He stared at Iruka's pale clammy face as he helped Kakashi set him down.
"Broken ribs," the copy nin said, panting. "Internal bleeding and probably a punctured lung."
Raido's eyes were glued to Iruka for another moment, then he turned on Kakashi. "How? How could you let this happen? Why was he on a mission that dangerous anyway?" He stood up, his fists balling.
"Rai!" Genma stepped forward, looking between the two, seeing in Kakashi's visible eye what Raido wasn't. "Don't."
"Fuck that!" He pushed Genma back. "How could you let him get hurt?" He shouted. Kakashi simply stood and took it, his eyes still glued to Iruka.
The medic nins showed up then and they backed up to let them work. They got him onto the stretcher and took off. Kakashi glanced once more at Raido, at the fear on the man's face, then followed them.
When they got to the hospital, they tried to get him to sit so he could be looked over, but he refused. He caught up with Yamato outside the surgical suite and they sat together on the bench.
"Is this what it was like when I was in here?" Yamato asked, staring at the door.
Kakashi nodded. "They told me you'd be fine, but I didn't believe it until I saw you again. I think I did about a hundred laps of this hallway."
"Yeah." Yamato swallowed and they fell silent, both staring once more at the surgery door.
The first thing he noticed when he woke was that he could breathe a lot better. But as soon as he tried to take a deep breath, he became aware of the second thing - that his chest was a single large mass of pain. "Fuck."
"Hello to you, too." Kakashi's voice said.
"Oh hell. I'm dead, aren't I?" Iruka asked the ceiling.
"I thought that the first time I woke up, too." Yamato's voice said.
Iruka looked toward it. "I'm not?"
Yamato shook his head and smiled at him. "No. I understand the feeling, though."
Iruka looked the other direction and there, in the hospital, was Kakashi. "Why are you here?"
"Why does everyone ask that?" He sighed and shook his head.
"Because you hate hospitals. It's a well-known fact." Iruka said.
Kakashi sighed. "I've already had this conversation once. Yamato, would you care to enlighten him?"
"He'll tell you how well aware he is of his dislike of hospitals, then go on to ask you where you would be if the situation was reversed. Then, when you told him that you don't hate them as much as he does, he'll tell you how much he loves you and then you'll have no arguments left." Yamato raised an eyebrow at Kakashi. "Did I cover everything?"
Iruka stared at Yamato, then turned again to the copy nin who looked thoughtful, then nodded. "That about covers it."
Iruka simply blinked. How much he loves you? "Um..." He had no idea what to say to that. "Um..." He decided he just couldn't deal with that yet. He tried for another deep breath. "Okay, God, that hurts." He closed his eyes, stopped trying to breathe deeply and concentrated instead on taking any air in.
"Do you want the nurse? Pain killer?" Yamato asked, standing. the worry evident in his voice.
That's when Iruka registered that they were holding his hands. He really was in pain if he hadn't noticed that yet. He swallowed. "No. It'll only delay my healing."
"You two are so alike." Kakashi said, shaking his head. "Yamato's the same way."
Iruka looked over at him. "Go ahead and tell me you take it. How long have I been here?"
"He won't take it, either." Yamato put it.
"Um…" Kakashi glanced at the clock. "You've been in not quite a day and a half."
Iruka blinked. "Please tell me you haven't been here the whole time."
Kakashi glanced at Yamato. "Let's see, how did he put it? Oh yeah, 'if you'd prefer, I could sit in the hallway'."
Kakashi rolled his eyes. "That was only after you told me I stink."
"Oh, right." Yamato said, nodding. "The first time, you had to get Tsunade-sama first so I could report and you dodged the discussion altogether."
"You told him he stunk?" Iruka asked.
"Yeah, but only because I was trying to kick him out. He didn't listen."
Iruka nodded. "He's stubborn like that."
"I'm still here." Kakashi said, peeved.
Iruka laughed, then started coughing. "Ouch."
"Settle down. Water?" Yamato asked and Iruka nodded.
They helped him sit up and drink. By the time he was laying back, he was exhausted again and let out a big yawn. "Ugh. I hate being injured."
"You need more rest." Kakashi said, perching on the side of the bed. He took his hand again. "Sleep. We'll be here."
"Go home, I'll be fine."
"Don't bother, he won't listen." Yamato said.
Iruka turned to him. "Then how about you? Go home. I'll be fine."
"I won't listen, either." He chuckled.
Iruka rolled his eyes. "I give up."
"Good! He learns faster than you do." Kakashi said, looking over at Yamato who scowled.
"Get some rest. We'll be here when you wake up." Yamato said and dropped a kiss on him.
Iruka blushed, a little surprised, but it only got worse when Kakashi did it, too. Fortunately, his body took over for him before he could get too flustered from it and dragged him back under.
"What are we going to do with him?" Kakashi asked.
"What do you mean?" Yamato glanced up from watching the younger man sleep.
"I don't think he realizes how we feel." Kakashi frowned.
"Oh. Yeah, I think you're right." He shrugged. "We're just going to have to tell him. We learned that lesson, didn't we?"
"Yeah, that we did." The copy nin paused and frowned. "Do you think he'll believe it, though? He can be kind of stubborn."
"Hmm. I don't know." Yamato sat back, looking thoughtful. "We'll think of something."
"We need to think of it before Raido has a chance to talk to him."
Yamato blinked at his lover. "Raido? Why?"
Kakashi nodded. "He was on the gate, saw us come back. He nearly took my head off."
"You think he really loves him?" Yamato asked, staring at Iruka's face again, his frown coming back.
"I don't know. I think he thinks he does. But I don't know if he really does. Maybe he's in love with the idea of it. He missed having someone, they got back together again, even for only a short time, and he liked having that someone." Kakashi shrugged. "Maybe. I don't know, I'm no expert. Look how long it took us. Either way, he might convince him that we can't possibly love him."
"Why couldn't we?"
Kakashi glanced up at him. "Because we're already together. I mean, how many people do you know that love two others?"
Yamato paused. "Yeah, I see what you mean." He looked up at Kakashi. "You know, we never really talked much about it. About him."
"We didn't, really, did we? Aside from the fact that we were both attracted to him." Kakashi considered Yamato for a moment. "Does it bother you? That I could love both of you?"
Yamato blinked. "How could it? I mean, if I'm the same way…" he trailed off. "No. It doesn't. You?"
Kakashi shook his head. "No. You know, if you'd asked me four months ago if I could, I'd have called you crazy. But it's there. God, the fear when I thought he wasn't going to make it." He looked back at Yamato. "It was you all over again."
"I'm sorry." Yamato swallowed and went back to watching Iruka sleep. "But he did make it. He'll be fine."
"Yes, he will."
What the heck was going on? Iruka surfaced from sleep slowly. The pain hit him hard, and it stunned him a moment. Then he heard the voices again.
"No. You have no need to go in there. He's asleep." Yamato's voice said.
"Then I can just look at him and make sure he's okay." That was Raido's voice.
"He's fine. But you don't need to be in there, especially if he wakes up." Kakashi this time.
"What gives you the right to decide for him?" Raido asked. "What gives you the right to keep people out? You're practically claiming him. You're fucking chakra's broadcasting three blocks away!"
"Because we love him?" Yamato challenged.
Raido snorted. "Please. Everyone knows you're committed to each other. You can't love each other and him. I love him."
"Do you, Raido? Do you really?" Kakashi asked. "You have a funny way of showing it."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Raido's asked angrily.
"You've hurt him! More than enough." Yamato said, in answer. "He doesn't need to be hurt anymore."
"What do you know about it?" He paused, then when they didn't answer he said, "you don't even know him!"
"Don't we?" Kakashi asked. "I think we know him better than you. And I think it's time you left."
"Bullshit." Iruka could picture Raido gritting his teeth at that.
"If you know him so well, then tell me something really basic. Why does he teach?" Kakashi asked him.
There was a few seconds of silence at that. "Because he's a chuunin and that's what he can do. What kind of question is that?" Irritation was leaking in.
"He teaches because he wants to, to pass the Will of Fire on. Because he enjoys it and he's good at it." Yamato said, "and if you were more concerned with loving him instead of just wanting someone, you'd know things like this."
Iruka lay quietly, listening to the conversation, stunned. "Go home, Raido. He doesn't want to see you."
"I can be just as stubborn as you. I'll be back. You can't be his guard dogs forever." This was followed by retreating footsteps. A moment later, the door opened and they came in.
He was too shocked to close his eyes and pretend to sleep, but he wished he had. He didn't have the mental capacity in that moment to figure out what to say. He just stared at them as they came back into the room.
"He's awake." Yamato smiled. "Welcome back."
Iruka blinked at him. "Um… thank… you." He swallowed hard, then winced. His throat was horribly dry.
"Do you need some water?" Kakashi asked and Iruka nodded.
They poured him a cup and helped him sit up a little more. After sipping, he sighed. "That's better. How long was I out?" He was avoiding it, the big white elephant in the middle of the room.
"Um, it's been about twelve hours since you were awake last." Kakashi set the cup back on his table and, after pausing to lay a long kiss on his forehead, sat on the bed next to him, taking his hand.
"No wonder I'm hungry." He said, frowning.
"I'll see if I can find a nurse," Yamato said and left.
"How are you feeling?" Kakashi asked, looking him over.
"Like I got hit by a horde of Naruto's clones."
Kakashi laughed. "You look like it. They changed your bandage while you were out. You've got some very pretty bruises on your chest."
"I can believe it." He sighed. "They say how long I'll be here?"
Kakashi shook his head. "No idea. They… wouldn't talk to us much."
Iruka blinked at him. "Why?"
"Neither of us is your partner, as far as they know. So…" he let it trail off.
Right. That kind of thing is reserved for family. He frowned. As far as they know. He didn't know what to say to that, but he was rescued by the nurse who came in then.
"Hungry?" She asked and he nodded. "I'd expect so. You've been out for a while." She turned to the other two. "You'll need to leave while I check him over."
"No, it's okay. They're… the closest thing to family I have." He held his breath at that until he saw Yamato smile.
"If you insist." She said, shrugging it off. She moved his bandages aside and he grabbed the sheet when she started to poke. Yamato took his hand and gripped it. Kakashi was forced to stand back for the nurse. "You're healing nicely. You'll still be another day, but that's only if you have someone to help you at home, otherwise it'll be a good deal longer."
"He'll have help at home." Kakashi said and the look he gave Iruka dared him to challenge it.
"Then you can probably go home tomorrow. I'll get you some soup." She replaced the bandages and patted his shoulder as she left.
Iruka didn't say anything at first after she closed the door. He just stared at the blanket over his legs. "Um, don't you guys need to go back out? Find that woman?"
"We've already reported in. The attacks have stopped, at least, as far as we know. Apparently the two that we took care of were the head of that portion of it. Naruto came back late yesterday to let us know that the caves are empty now." Yamato sighed. "They still don't know for sure who the leak in ANBU is, but Sai thinks he's getting close."
"That's something. Have they told the Tsuchikage who the woman is?" Iruka asked.
"Naruto headed back out this morning to go talk to him. He's meeting Gaara on the border of Earth and they're going together." Kakashi shook his head. "They'll make sure to give him a good description of the woman and what we knew of her whereabouts. He's not going to want to hear this stuff. But he can't argue with the fact that he's not ready to go to war with two separate countries. "
"No, I guess not." Iruka sighed. "I'm sorry."
Yamato raised an eyebrow. "Whatever for?"
"You guys had to carry me back. I shouldn't have gotten hit in the first place." He shook his head. "I've been out of it for too long for missions like that. Not to mention as a chunin, I should never have been on an S-ranked mission to begin with."
Kakashi actually laughed. "Please. You're only a chunin because you're too stubborn to take the test."
Iruka raised an eyebrow, then blinked. "And because it would take you out of the classroom too much," Yamato added.
"Really. Don't give us that. Anyway, it doesn't matter. We're just glad you're okay. If you want more missions, I'm sure you could get them. You more than held your own out there. So, just let it go." Kakashi chuckled.
Iruka opened his mouth to argue, but the nurse brought the tray in for him, then. "Have you two left at all?" Iruka asked instead as he picked up his spoon.
"We took turns going to the cafeteria." Kakashi said. "We're fine."
"You really should go home. You stink." Iruka said, holding on to a straight face carefully.
"That won't work twice." Yamato said.
"I was talking to you." Iruka lost the battle and laughed.
"Ha. You're funny." Yamato leaned over. "Keep it up and even when you're healthy, you won't get sex for a month."
"Right." Iruka laughed. "Ouch. Can't do too much of that."
"Laugh or sex?" Kakashi asked.
That only caused more laughter. "Owwww. Laugh. Stop!"
"You should eat that before it gets cold. Their soup isn't all that great in the first place." Kakashi said, pointing at his tray.
"I could if you'd leave me alone to eat." Iruka said, lifting the spoon.
"You don't need to be alone to eat." Kakashi said. "And for the record, you're coming home with us tomorrow."
Iruka peered at him, his spoon half way to his mouth. "I have my own apartment, you know. I'll be fine."
"We promised the nurse you'd have help. You're apartment is way too tiny for all of us." Yamato paused. "We've seen where you live," He said, at the look Iruka gave him. "It makes no sense to go there."
Iruka sighed and let it go. He wasn't ready to go yet, one way or the other. He concentrated on his soup and was annoyed when he started to fall asleep before he'd even finished it.
When he woke again, both men were asleep in their chairs and he felt a lot better. He still couldn't move much, but breathing wasn't nearly as hard as it was the night before. He looked to one side and Yamato was turned a little in his, his head resting on the back and the rest of him sprawled as much as possible in a chair. And, of course, one hand holding one of Iruka's.
On the other side, Kakashi had his legs stretched out in front of him, his head back and his mouth open under his mask. And he was, like his partner, holding Iruka's hand, too.
His partner. They were still partners, he and Yamato. But Iruka couldn't ignore what he'd heard, either.
He didn't realize how little Raido knew him. That had hurt, even though it shouldn't have. But it helped put a lot of their relationship into perspective. Maybe, if he hadn't already loved Kakashi and Yamato, at least to a point, they might have been able to get past that stuff, but it didn't matter now.
But the thing that had really shocked him was hearing Yamato say outright that they loved him. To someone who was very likely going to tell plenty of other people. And they did know him, in ways that Raido couldn't begin to imagine.
He still couldn't quite wrap his mind around the idea of them opening up their relationship to him, though. It just didn't make sense to him. He sighed. Maybe he was just fuzzy from being in the hospital and unconscious so much, or maybe he was just missing some piece here.
"I think I can smell the smoke from all the thinking." Kakashi said.
Iruka turned his head toward him. "Ha. Ha. You're funny."
Kakashi leaned over and laid his lips on Iruka's, kissing him slowly. "Do me a favor?" He asked when he pulled back.
"Hmm?" Iruka asked, his mind having gone blank.
"Don't scare me like this again."
Iruka blinked at him. "What… I mean…" He swallowed.
"We thought we were going to lose you there for a bit." He frowned. "Scared us both."
Lose him? He must really be missing something. When did he ever have them? "I swear, my brain is off. I'm… sorry. I don't know what you mean."
"There were a few moments there where we thought you weren't going to survive." He frowned.
"Oh!" Iruka's eyes widened. "Oh. Sorry, I didn't do it on purpose." He blushed.
"I know. Didn't scare us any less." He sat back and sighed. "I hope they let us take you home today. These chairs are not the most comfortable." He stretched the best he could.
"Don't I know it." Yamato said from the other side of the bed. "Not enough room."
Iruka considered telling them they didn't have to stay there, but he figured they'd just argue with him, so he saved his breath. Instead, he said, "you couldn't get enough room in a king-sized bed by yourself."
Kakashi laughed and Yamato scowled. "I'll have you know, our bed is a king and I sleep just fine there, with room to spare."
"Well, you did have room to spare. We'll see how that goes tonight," Kakashi said. "I'm going to hunt up the nurse and see if we can get you released." He leaned down and kissed Iruka before leaving the room.
Iruka gave up. He just wasn't going to understand these two, at least not yet.
After she checked him over thoroughly, during which he needed to grip Yamato's hand again, he was cleared to go home. Nothing strenuous for a week, including sex, which all three of them pouted at, to the confusion of the nurse. No shower for at least two days until the bandages could come off, which Iruka pouted at. He was already itchy.
He had to fight with his clothes and frustratingly, he ended up needing help dressing. He finally managed to finish and sit up, and he stared at the two of them. "We could simply overpower you and force you to go with us." Kakashi said, with a raised eyebrow.
"You wouldn't." Iruka said, his mouth hanging open.
"We would." Yamato said, crossing his arms.
"I could kill you." Iruka challenged.
"You could. But not in your current state and not without any weapons at all." Kakashi leaned in to him. "And you wouldn't because you love us."
Iruka gulped. He knew they knew. But having it said like that made it worse, somehow. He blushed, then sighed. "Fine. I'll go with you." He threw his hands up, then winced.
"Good," Kakashi simply said. They got him to their house and settled into the big bed and by the time they did, Iruka was exhausted. He didn't think moving that little - they transported him, for God's sake, would have done it. But by the time they'd efficiently stripped him, and got him settled between them on the bed, he fell asleep.
