She watched her apprentice's face and knew that Sakura was braver than Tsunade had ever been. She didn't know if she could have faced what Sakura was dealing with now. She knew that there was a possibility she would lose her position as a ninja over her relationship with her former teacher and yet she stood there, her hand in Kakashi's, facing the consequences of her actions.
Tsunade considered drawing it out further, making them squirm a little longer, but they'd probably already been through hell over it. She wished she'd known sooner what was going on. "Well, it seems that the best way to handle this would be suspension with pay."
Kakashi stared at her. "Suspension?"
"Yes. Unless there's something you'd rather I do? I'm open to suggestion." She raised her eyebrows and waited.
"No, I just thought…" He started, but shut his mouth.
"I'm guessing you thought you'd be expelled for it." When he nodded, she frowned. "I can see where that would be the assumption. And I'll say that if this had happened more than five years ago, I would have. " She paused. "But for one thing, I think the rule needs to be more defined."
She watched as they started to relax a little. "There should be an age limit on it. It's not unreasonable for something like this to happen. You spend a long time together, trusting each other with your lives. You spend a lot of time together, learning about each other. It's ludicrous to expect that it would never happen." She paused. "There's a caveat to this, though." And here, she did smile.
Sakura swallowed. "Anything."
"Don't say that just yet." Tsunade warned, then smiled. "There's no law against marrying your former student." She watched Kakashi's eye widen as he understood and then the crinkle form in the corner. "I'm not quite done yet, though."
He nodded.
"You have to take off your mask." Tsunade bit the inside of her cheek to keep from grinning.
He blinked at her. "I'm sorry?"
"I said, you have to remove the mask. It's not right for Sakura to have to deal with the rumors over it. I know that you've been wearing it a long time, Kakashi, but, and maybe this is a little personal, because she is my apprentice, but I think it's only fair to her."
Ha! And I'll finally get to see his face! Goodness knows I've tried more than once when he was in the hospital. Somehow, he always seems to know when someone gets close.
"Shishou, no, he doesn't need to do that..." Sakura started, but closed her mouth when Tsunade looked over at her.
Kakashi glanced down at her. "It's okay. She's right." And so saying, he pulled it down. "Besides, it wouldn't do for our baby to meet me while I was wearing a mask, would it?" He smiled at her.
Sakura stared at him. "But…are you…"
He just smiled again. "If this is the worst of it? We can still be shinobi and be together? All we have to do is deal with a suspension and I take off my mask?"
Sakura sighed. "I…guess you're right. I'm sorry." She looked away from him, but he just tilted her face back up to his.
"Don't." He said. "Just…I really think it's time, anyway." When she gave him a puzzled look, he just shrugged. "We can talk more about it later." But when they turned back to Tsunade, it was to see her staring at him. Sakura resisted the urge to roll her eyes at the dreamy look on her master's face.
"Tsunade-sama?" Sakura said.
"Oh. Um, right. So, suspension. How long do you think it will take you to plan the wedding?"
Sakura looked up at Kakashi. "I have no idea."
"Okay, then, you have two weeks. By the time you come back to active duty, I expect you to be married and back from your honeymoon." When they just stared at her, she shook her head. "Look, I could have expelled you for it. But let's be honest. You're two of my best shinobi and even if you're out of commission for a while, it's foolish to throw away that kind of thing permanently. Especially when the rule is bullshit in your situation in the first place. Now, get out of my office and go plan a wedding. I have work to do. Before Shizune yells at me."
They stared at her another moment, then turned to leave.
It took them the better part of an hour for it to truly sink in. They were off work for two weeks to get married and have a honeymoon. They weren't expelled.
As they sat in his apartment over breakfast, Sakura started to giggle. Then laugh. "What's so funny?" Kakashi asked, mildly.
"At least you don't have to try to write Jiraiya's books for him."
He rolled his eyes. "I might have done very well. Maybe I still will…" he laughed at the look on her face. When she calmed down, he said, "Well then, soon-to-be-Mrs. Hatake, who do we talk to first?"
"Oh god. My mother doesn't know." Sakura said and her eyes were huge.
Kakashi swallowed. He was about a hundred times more scared of Sakura's mother than he was Tsunade. "Oh dear."
The whispering was getting old. Kakashi sighed and turned to Yamato. "Are they ever going to shut up?" He asked.
Yamato shrugged. "You could have chosen a better time to remove your mask permanently than at the wedding."
Kakashi glared at him. "Some help you are."
Yamato grinned. "You're not nervous, are you?"
Kakashi raised an eyebrow, annoyed that Yamato was right. "No, I'm not."
"Well, then, I'm helping." He shrugged. "I could just give them all my scary face."
"We went them to stop whispering, not run screaming." Kakashi said, fighting his own grin.
"What's going on?" Naruto asked from the other side of Yamato.
Yamato turned to him. "Kakashi's annoyed at the whispering."
Naruto laughed. "Duh. It's cause he picked now to show his face."
"That's what I told him." Yamato replied.
Kakashi wanted to growl. "Naruto, if you want to be able to father more children, shut up." Kakashi smiled in satisfaction at the sweat drop. He turned to Yamato, ready to suggest maybe he should offer his scary face when the music started.
Sakura, with the help of the other rookie kunoichi, had managed to put together a very impressive wedding in just a week. They were marrying in one of the parks, Tsunade officiating. Someone had managed to get together dresses for the women and even managed to get western-style tuxes for Kakashi, Yamato and Naruto. He figured that was probably Ino's doing. Sakura hadn't even had a clue where to begin when it came to clothes.
He watched as Hinata and Ino started down the aisle and noted all the flowers. Ino had cleaned out her parent's flower shop for the wedding so that there were blooms everywhere. He had no idea what they were all called, he only recognized the Sakura blossoms and daisies. He had been a little surprised by the marked lack of roses, but it turned out that Sakura wasn't even remotely interested. A fact that he filed away for later.
And then he stopped thinking about everything else. Sakura stood at the other end of the aisle and he couldn't seem to see anything but her. She'd pulled her hair up again like she had for Maiko's wedding. The dress she'd chosen was white with red trim with a long, full skirt. It had a high waist because she'd discovered when she was fitted that she'd started showing just a bit. The neckline was low without being too sexy and he saw that she was wearing the necklace he'd given her.
And then she was there next to him and he had to swallow hard. He was getting married, dear God. He spared a brief second to send up a prayer of thanks for the opportunity and a prayer of help that he didn't mess this up. He wasn't going to fail in this. He made mistakes in the past, but he knew that he could no longer let them rule him. It was time to look forward, like Obito wanted him to do so long ago.
Well, Obito, here goes. This woman is my future. Thank you for giving me your eye to help me see it.
