Their loving that night had been soft and tender, a celebration of the possibilities. Soft kisses, slow lovemaking, they fell asleep early, both with a hand on her belly as if in protection.
The next morning, they were yet again at a loss for much to do. They had a leisurely breakfast at the tea shop, then went down to the beach. They pulled their shoes off, rolled their pants up and splashed along the edge of the water.
Kakashi splashed Sakura when she wasn't looking and before too long, they got into a full-blown water battle. Somewhere along the line, they ended up soaking each other thoroughly. They stretched out together on the sand and cuddled while they dried off. A short time later, they dragged themselves up and headed back to the inn to change and get ready.
"What time do you think they'll be here?" Sakura asked as she dried her hair from their shower. They had yet to take a single shower together that didn't involve forgetting the soap. This time, Sakura didn't mind.
Kakashi checked the clock. It was just after noon. "Hopefully soon. We can grab some food and get them caught up."
Sakura nodded. "Do they know where we are? Or are we meeting them somewhere?"
"They're checking in here. I told Tsunade which room we were in." Kakashi picked up the clothing they'd left on the floor and hung up the wet stuff in the bathroom.
Sakura made sure the bed was made and the rest of the room was straightened. She carefully tucked the rope and ball gag in the very back of the wardrobe. Satisfied, she picked up her book and curled up on the bed to read.
Kakashi paused at the side of the bed and stared at her a minute. "I know you said it would be another week, but I was wondering…" he trailed off. He couldn't believe how anxious he was about this.
Sakura looked up at him. She knew what he was asking and, frankly, she wanted to know, too. "I can try. But if I don't see anything yet, it doesn't mean I'm not. Okay?"
Kakashi nodded. Sakura set her book to the side, placed her hands on her abdomen and closed her eyes. Her hands began to glow green and Kakashi watched as she concentrated very carefully. Then she opened her eyes and they met his. "It's there." That's all she said and it was everything.
He came around the bed and knelt next to her. One hand went straight to her belly, then he kissed it tenderly. "We're…" He couldn't seem to talk. He looked up into her eyes. Taking a deep breath, he kissed her lips thoroughly and she put her arms around his neck. "Thank you." He whispered.
"I didn't do it all by myself." She chuckled, "you helped, too."
He laughed with her, then stood up, picked her up and set her on his lap, cuddling her close. "Wow. Parents." He took a shaky breath. "Our kid is in BIG trouble."
Sakura laughed. "With us as parents? No doubt."
She nuzzled his neck, kissed him here and there and he captured her lips again. But a moment later, there was a knock on the door. "Let me get it. We don't need them passing out in the hallway." Sakura climbed off his lap and turned toward the door.
Kakashi stopped her a moment. "Let's not say anything about the baby just yet. I kind of would like to keep it between us for the moment. We'll have to tell them when we explain why there's no way you're going to be bait, but for now…" He trailed off, but she nodded.
"I know what you mean." She kissed him quickly, then ran to the door and pulled it open. When she saw the couple on the other side, she paused in surprise.
"Tenten! And…Gai?" She stepped back so they could come in.
"Hi Sakura!" Tenten greeted her with a hug.
"Hello Sakura." Gai smiled at her, and formed his "nice guy" pose. The effect was somewhat diminished because he'd lost the green jumpsuit and was wearing…normal clothes. He had simple black pants, and a gray pullover shirt.
Tenten was wearing an outfit very similar to her normal ninja clothes, except that the shirt was longer than normal. Sakura thought it was a bit warm for the long sleeves, but she didn't comment.
"Yo!" Kakashi said from the bed. He got up and approached Gai and Tenten and both turned to him.
There was dead silence for about two solid minutes as both of them realized that Kakashi wasn't wearing his mask. Tenten's mouth had dropped open and a moment later, she passed out cold. That woke Gai up and he turned his attention to her.
Sakura stepped back as he picked her up with a surprising amount of tenderness and carried her over to the bed. Something about the way he held her caused Sakura to take pause, but she focused on waking her up again. Her hands glowed green as she held them over Tenten's head. A moment later, Tenten groaned. "Wha..?"
Gai was there immediately. "You passed out, Tenten. Are you all right?"
Kakashi raised an eyebrow at him, but said nothing. He had a pretty good idea what was going on.
Tenten looked up at him and smiled. "I'm fine, Gai…err, sensei."
Sakura had to fight the smile that threatened. So that's how it was…
Tenten looked back at Kakashi and blushed. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean…um, you're gorgeous." Her cheeks got redder. "Um, I mean, I was just surprised. I'm sorry." She turned and buried her face in Gai's chest and mumbled, "let me just disappear."
Gai chuckled, and patted her on the back. He leaned down and whispered something into her ear and she sat up immediately. "No!" Then blushed again as she realized she'd said it out loud. "Arghh." She flopped back onto the bed and closed her eyes.
Sakura felt real pity for Tenten in that moment. "I almost passed out the first time I saw his face, too. I don't blame you." Tenten laughed at that and sat up again.
"Are you guys hungry? We haven't had lunch yet." Kakashi spoke up, hoping to turn the conversation away from himself.
"Starving! He was in such a hurry to get here. I had to threaten him last night with a thousand kunai to get him to stop and sleep." Tenten rolled her eyes at him and Gai had the grace to blush.
Sakura grinned. "That sounds like him. How about barbecue? There's a really nice little place just down the street."
"I like barbecue!" Gai announced.
"Okay, then. Let's go." Kakashi motioned to the door and Sakura stepped aside for Gai and Tenten to go first. They filed into the hall, down the stairs and outside. As they walked to the barbecue place, no one held hands and the tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife.
Finally, at the restaurant, they were escorted to a booth. Kakashi slipped into one side and Sakura sat next to him, leaving Gai and Tenten to share the other bench. Gai slid over and Tenten sat last. They seemed to sit as far away as possible. Sakura bit her tongue to keep from laughing.
Kakashi turned to Sakura and their eyes met. She gave him a brief nod and he turned to Gai and Tenten. "Sakura and I have an announcement to make." He leaned forward a bit and lowered his voice. "We are going to be married."
Tenten's eyes grew huge. She looked from one to the other and back again. She leaned in to Sakura. "For real? Not part of the mission??"
Sakura smiled. "For real." She stretched her hand across the table and showed Tenten her ring.
"Oh, it's beautiful!" She jumped up and leaned over to hug Sakura.
Gai sat there a moment looking at the two of them thoughtfully. "Congratulations." Sakura was surprised. She had expected him to jump up, strike a pose and begin a discourse on the "power of youth!" But instead that was all he said.
The waitress showed up then, and they all put their orders in. Everyone ordered sake except for Sakura. Tenten gave her a thoughtful look, but didn't say anything. When the waitress was gone, Sakura decided to ask. "How long have you two been seeing each other?"
Tenten blushed bright red and Gai looked at Sakura sharply. "What do you mean? She has been my student since she graduated from the academy."
Sakura shook her head. "That's not what I mean, and you know it."
Gai gave her a considering look, then turned to Kakashi. "Are you really getting married? Isn't there a rule about that?"
"No, actually. As she is no longer my student and hasn't been for some time. She's a teammate, yes, but not a student. She's of more than legal age to marry in our country, so there's no reason not to." He smiled, then pulled Sakura against him and put an arm around her.
Tenten stared at the two of them. "But I thought a teacher could get fired for something like that."
Kakashi inclined his head. "If they are still student and teacher, yes. But as is the case with you and Gai, she has surpassed being taught by me. I am now simply the team leader, rather than her teacher."
Gai turned to Tenten then. Tenten turned her gaze back to him. "Gai and I have been seeing each other in private for almost a year now."
Gai let out a breath and his lips spread in a huge smile. "I am in love with her. But we were afraid that we would get into trouble." He pulled Tenten against him, then, and wrapped his arms around her and right there in front of them, he kissed her.
Sakura was having a very hard time reconciling this man with the one she knew of as Maito Gai. "A year?" Sakura shook her head. "I had no idea."
"Does anyone know about this besides you two?" Kakashi asked.
"Only Lee. He has been covering for us. He pretends to take Tenten out so that if someone sees us by mistake, we pretend say it was Lee she was with." Gai turned back to them and Tenten settled into Gai's side.
"Wow. That's…" Sakura shook her head again. "That's good of him."
Tenten laughed. "He liked it. He thought it was kind of like a spy game. But it's not really fair to him. There's a girl that just passed her chunnin exam a few months ago that he's been very interested in, but with him covering for us, he hasn't been able to ask her out." She glanced up at Gai. "I suppose now he can."
She took a deep breath, leaned up and whispered something in his ear. His eyes grew wide and he grinned at her. "Do you really mean it, Tenten?"
She smiled and nodded. "Yep."
Gai scared them all, by jumping up onto the seat and shouting "YES!"
Kakashi rolled his eyes, then looked up at him. "Um, Gai?"
Gai looked down at him from the seat. "Yes, Kakashi?"
"We're supposed to be undercover?" He raised an eyebrow and Gai had the grace to blush.
"Oh, you are right." He climbed back down and pulled Tenten against him. "Well, then, I guess that means we also have an announcement to make." He grinned hugely, stopped to kiss Tenten again and then turned back to them. "Tenten and I are going to be married."
Sakura grinned and this time she was the one who jumped up and hugged Tenten. Tenten giggled and couldn't seem to stop the huge grin that crept across her face.
"Well, then, congratulations to you, too!" Kakashi leaned over and shook Gai's hand.
Then the waitress appeared again with their drinks and the meat to start the barbecue. They waited patiently for her to finish and leave, then Gai reached into his pocket and pulled something out. "Will you wear this now?" He asked Tenten.
She nodded and smiled. "Yes, Gai. I'll wear it now."
Gai opened a small velvet box and took out a basic ruby solitaire ring, then placed it on her left ring finger. "How long have you had that?"
Gai kissed Tenten's hand and turned back to them. "Six months, I have been waiting for my beautiful blossom to agree to marry me." He gave them his patented nice-guy grin.
Everyone laughed, and that was when they decided to eat. Kakashi caught Gai and Tenten up on the mission and the information they had thus far while they ate. When he'd finished, Gai asked the obvious question. "So, why can Sakura not go?"
No one thought Tenten wasn't capable, but the fact was that Sakura already knew so much about what was going on. Kakashi and Sakura exchanged glances and Sakura took a deep breath. "May I?" When Kakashi nodded, she turned to the other. "I'm expecting. Kakashi and I are going to be parents."
There was a stunned silence from across the table. It took a full minute for Gai to recover. "How long have you been seeing each other?"
Kakashi grinned. "Since the first night we were here - officially. This has been brewing between us a long time, though neither of us would admit it."
Sakura blushed. "I'd been actually having some rather vivid dreams about him. In fact, I was having one the morning after we camped when he decided to kiss me."
They looked back to Kakashi. He chuckled and scratched the back of his head. "I thought it was a good idea at the time. I'd overheard her say my name a couple of times, that morning and the morning bef-" he stopped dead, realizing what he'd just said.
Sakura's face drained of blood. "You heard that? So, you also heard…"
Kakashi nodded. "I didn't know how to tell you. I didn't mean for it to come out this way."
Sakura buried her face in her hands. "I'm going to kill you. Right after our child is born." She mumbled.
Kakashi chuckled, then hugged her to him again. "I'm sorry." He whispered into her ear. "I'm glad you did, though. I may never have done anything. But instead we're going to be married and we're going to be parents."
He put his hand under her chin and lifted her face to him. He placed his lips on hers gently and kissed her. She took a deep breath. "It's okay. I guess it worked out for the best."
"Um, anyway," she said as she turned back to the others, "I'm just pregnant. I suspect I'm only about five days or so, maybe even less. I can just detect the second chakra signature."
"We're just pregnant." Kakashi corrected her. "And I'm not willing to put her and the baby at that sort of risk. There's too much that can happen, especially this early."
Gai nodded in agreement. "If Tenten were pregnant, I would not want to risk it, either. Honestly, I do not want to put her in that sort of situation at all, but if Sakura can not, she will have to. Aside from Sakura, she is the best option, anyway. She has the best taijutsu skills in our ninja corps."
Tenten blushed at the praise. "I agree with Gai. I'm going to have to be the one to do it. But how do we do it?"
"We think we might have an answer for that." Kakashi and Sakura exchanged glances. "Let's talk about that back at the inn."
They spent the rest of the meal just chatting about their friends and Sakura and Tenten talked about weddings and dresses. As they left the restaurant, Tenten pulled Sakura back to walk with her. "So, um, I have to ask." She blushed again. "Is it true, what they say? About pain?"
"Wait, you haven't yet?" Sakura stopped and gaped at her.
Tenten shook her head. "No. Gai wanted me to at least commit to marrying him first. He didn't want to 'take my innocence' as he put it and maybe have me regret it if we couldn't be together." Tenten snickered, "little does he realize. I lost my innocence long ago, with the things I've imagined between the two of us."
Sakura laughed. "Oh I know exactly what you mean. The dreams I had about Kakashi…" she shook her head, then cleared her throat. "Well, it does, at first. But it only lasts a minute or so and then it's just wonderful. Have you guys done…anything?"
Tenten blushed. "Oh, we've gotten close. Um, oral, you know. Mostly him giving it to me, but one night I realized just how frustrated he must have been after taking care of me and I insisted." She fanned herself. "Good grief, is it hot?"
Sakura chuckled. "Those long sleeves of yours can't be helping, but it's not that bad. I think it has more to do with your…ahem… memories."
Tenten laughed. "I have to wear the long sleeves. I borrowed an idea from…someone." Tenten stumbled, unsure if Sakura would want to hear it. She pulled up the sleeves on either side and there, tattooed on the inside of her forearms was kanji. "I can summon kunai and shuriken anywhere, without a scroll."
Sakura knew where it had come from. She appreciated her friends concern. "It's okay. I know where you got the idea. It think it's great. It also makes things a bit easier if you do end up going. You'll never be without weaponry."
Tenten nodded. "It's another reason Tsunade thought I would be good for this. I do have respectable taijutsu skills - no one on our team could get away without it - but I can also summon weaponry seemingly from nowhere. I do wonder, though, why Tsunade sent me with Gai instead of Lee. He doesn't usually go undercover."
Sakura smiled. "I have a suspicion about that. Anyway, I think you'll be fine with Gai." She winked at her. "I also strongly encourage you to, um, lose that innocence before you go. You don't want it taken from you." She paused. "Some of the women we saw were young. I'm pretty sure they were virgins and I have a sneaking suspicion that they will sell them off to the highest bidder."
Tenten nodded. "I'll be having a talk with Gai this evening." Then she blushed because she just realized she'd all but told Sakura that they would be having sex.
Sakura just smiled. "Do you know how to handle birth control?" She asked her. "I'm assuming you don't necessarily want a baby yet."
"I do. I'm okay there. And we do want a baby, but I think it'll be enough of a shock on the village when we announce our weddings and your baby."
Sakura laughed with her. "Okay, good." They caught up to the guys at that point and both women took the hands of their men as they walked back to the inn.
