“So, what do we call you? Kabutochimaru? Or perhaps Orochito?” Tenten cocked a hip and rested her fist on it as she considered the foul vermin in front of them.
“Hahaha. That’s actually rather novel. Did you come up with that all by yourself? Or did you need help?” Kabuto pushed his glasses up on his nose and stared around at the various faces opposite him.
Neji activated his Byakugan and scanned the area. There, over to the right was one of Kabuto’s nasties, up a few branches. There, another to the left, also above them. And two more down on the ground. They had odd chakra signatures, and he suspected they were more of Kabuto’s odious experiments. He turned his attention back to Kabuto.
“You have a lot of nerve.” Kiba growled. “You’re wanted by every major village in every Great Nation.”
Kabuto turned his attention to Kiba. “Ah, yes, the dog. Are you going to be the one to take me in? You and your pet?” Akamaru’s growl matched Kiba’s. Kabuto chuckled. “No no, I’m not here to be taken in. Not that any of you could manage that.”
Lee dropped into a fighting stance and Neji laid his hand onto Lee’s shoulder to calm him down a bit. They weren’t yet ready to fight.
“What do you want?” Neji’s voice was quiet…and dangerous.
“Why your lovely eyes, of course.” He chuckled and pushed his glasses back up his nose. He was wearing a full cloak, complete with hood so that all you could see was one hand and his face. Apparently, he wasn’t too happy with the portion of his anatomy that had taken on his master’s essence. “Oh, and the child.” His mouth twisted into a sickening grin.
Hinata grabbed Neji’s hand and squeezed it. Neji looked down at her and gave her a small curve of his lips to reassure her. His mind was working furiously. They needed to get the drop on them. There was no way to communicate effectively.
He looked at Tenten and waited to catch her eye. He deliberately turned his eyes up and to the right. She winked at him. He then squeezed Lee’s shoulder and when he looked up at him, Neji did the same as he did with Tenten, this time looking up and to the left.
Lee gave the most imperceptible nod to indicate he understood. Kiba and Shino would be harder to get their attention. He was used to working with Lee and Tenten, they understood his way of doing things. He released his bloodline trait, glanced down at Hinata, then whispered, “Byakugan!” hoping that she would take his meaning.
Thankfully, she did. She activated hers and he looked down. She followed his line of sight then looked over at Kiba and Shino who were more attuned to her. She made an obvious sniffing motion and then bowed her head. Kiba and Shino both caught on immediately.
All of this happened in the space of a few seconds. Neji turned back to Kabuto. “What makes you think we would give them to you? You have to realize that you’re outnumbered.”
Kabuto chuckled. “Yes, yes, let’s see. A bug nerd, a little girl who plays with knives, a dog…” he ticked off each on his fingers, “then there’s the one with no ninjutsu and, oh yes, the two who are useless out of close combat. As if I need worry about any of you brats.”
Hinata felt the tension rolling off of Neji, though there was no outward appearance of it. She squeezed his hand again and, knowing that he had everyone’s attention, he nodded, just once. Hinata wished she had a camera to capture the surprise on Kabuto’s face when they all leapt off the branches simultaneously.
She heard Lee and Tenten land above them, and Kiba, Shino and Akamaru below them, but they were concentrating on Kabuto. Neji went in first, his hands automatically making the first motions of the Gentle Fist. Hinata pushed her chakra into her feet and jumped against the tree trunk to come up behind Kabuto.
There was a scream below them that was obviously not human. There was no way to know what kind of being it was. And they were too busy dodging Kabuto to pay enough attention. Neji managed to land a hit, but was thrown back almost immediately. And as soon as Kabuto winced from the hit, he seemed to recover.
Neji remembered the conversation over sake one night with Naruto about his encounter with Kabuto. A former medical nin, Kabuto had methods of healing himself almost immediately. Their only hope was to get in a few good hits to block his chakra, which wouldn’t be easy. And that was the easy part.
Hinata hit once from behind, but her movements, though still graceful, were much more careful because of the babies. She didn’t dare take too many risks.
Another scream from the ground. The tenor of the scream was different but still, thankfully, not belonging to either of Hinata’s former teammates. There were very few sounds above them, aside from the rustling of leaves and the occasional branch. Hinata looked up, and could see Lee and Tenten moving about, but they were still engaged with the other two who seemed to be giving them a lot of trouble.
She dodged a snake flying toward her. Apparently, Kabuto could now summon Orochimaru’s snakes. She fervently hoped he hadn’t learned to summon his really big nasty snake. She spun on the branch and aimed another hit at Kabuto’s back, but he must have heard her and dodged again.
She was getting frustrated. She was better than this, babies or not. She watched as Neji landed another hit to Kabuto’s shoulder. Kabuto grunted and let out an angry yell. She hoped that was his summoning hand.
She jumped up to another branch, to try to just stay out of Neji’s way for the moment. She glanced up again, and saw Lee’s heel connect with the being’s shoulder and knock him back. She glanced down at Neji and caught his eye and he nodded to her. She would be more useful above.
She leapt higher still and came face to face with Lee’s opponent. He was…ugly. There were no other words to describe him. Obviously male, but he had a beak where his mouth should be. Two arms, two legs, but otherwise very little else to identify him as once being human. He had scaly wings that extended out of his back. His hands were the only other human-looking part of him and she realized a second later why.
He started forming hand signs and she managed to dodge the extra branch that sprouted out of the tree at the last second, landing lithely on top of it. She focused her chakra and formed the first hand of her 64-palms. The wings might be a problem, but as she focused, she could see the chakra points that led to them. They would have to go first.
She dodged another tree branch, then lunged for her first strike. The bird-thing tried to dodge it, but wasn’t fast enough. He seemed almost cumbersome on his feet. She would have to use that to her advantage. “Four-palms!” she shouted and aimed for the other wing. It fell limply to his back and he looked very surprised. Lee brought his leg up and placed a well-aimed kick to it’s head and it started falling from the tree.
Lee leapt after it and Hinata looked down to see Kabuto and Neji still dancing around each other, each aiming a strike, both attempting to dodge. She turned her attention to the other being. This one looked entirely human, except for the red eyes. She pondered that only briefly before jumping behind it and focusing her chakra once more.
This creature’s chakra network was very different from a normal human’s. Everything else looked the same, but the chakra network seemed to flow differently. She concentrated on each of the points and began her own dance. “Two palms, four palms!” She moved swiftly, and managed to hold on to the tree branch she was on by sheer force of will.
The wind whipped around her and Tenten, and she realized that he was a wind ninja of some sort. Careful to keep the chakra at her feet for fear of falling, she moved in again, aiming her next strike. Tenten’s kunai landed in his shoulder, thrown off course by his wind. He turned his wind and anger at Tenten and she was knocked back. “TENTEN!” Hinata yelled.
Tenten flipped and managed to grab onto a branch at the last second. Hinata channeled the panic and anger back into her Gentle Fist and turned to strike again. “Eight palms! Sixteen palms!” She spun again, “Thirty-two palms!” He was so focused on her, that he missed the shuriken aimed for him. Tenten embedded one in his throat and several more in his back. Hinata struck the chakra point near his heart and he dropped from the branch. Tenten jumped down to follow.
Hinata turned again to Neji and Kabuto. They were still circling, still aiming strikes, still dodging them. Hinata jumped down to a branch near them and focused her chakra once again. Concentrating, she pushed her chakra through her palm to the point at Kabuto’s other shoulder.
As she connected, she was thrown back again. Damn! She grumbled to herself. Throwing her chakra once again into her feet, she landed safely on the ground. There to her right was Kiba and Akamaru, though at the moment she wasn’t sure which was which. They’d used Human Mimicry and were currently battling another very human-looking creature. However, this one apparently was a fire ninja and was throwing fireballs at them, so they were doing more dodging than damage.
She glanced to her left and saw Shino and his destruction bugs battling a water user of some sort. There were puddles everywhere and water that seemed to come out of nowhere. She would have to give that more thought later. Shino currently had a layer of his bugs surrounding himself and still more moving in again to attack the other being.
Turning back to Kiba and using the distraction, she moved in silently. Dropping to her Gentle Fist crouch, she aimed the first strike and succeeded in disabling his first chakra point. It gave Kiba the advantage he needed and both he and Akamaru moved in for the attack. His opponent dropped a moment later.
Just as she turned back to Shino, however, the water-user was on the ground covered in bugs. Not wishing to watch the rest of the destruction, she jumped back into the trees.
“Enough!” Kabuto shouted, surprising both Hinata and Neji. “I will come quietly.”
Neji paused and raised one eyebrow at him. “I do not believe that for one moment.”
“It’s quite true. My companions are all dead. There are six of you and one of me. And, while I am quite a bit more talented than each of you, I have no intention of dying today, however remote the possibility.” Kabuto chuckled.
Neji looked at Hinata and then to the others, who had joined them. “Fine then, let’s not waste any time, shall we?”
They formed a circle around Kabuto. None of them trusted him, but they had standing orders to not kill him, unless they had to. Since it was quite obvious that they had no reason to, they couldn’t do it as much as they all wanted to. They moved swiftly in the ninja way and after the battle, Hinata had a hard time keeping up.
She noticed Tenten having a bit of trouble, too. She moved over beside her. “Tenten, are you alright?”
Tenten nodded. “I will be. I’ve…used a lot of energy.” Thankfully, Kabuto’s back was to them. She passed a meaningful look at Hinata and placed a hand on her abdomen.
Hinata’s eyes widened. She glanced at Kabuto, then grinned and mouthed “congrats” to Tenten. She reached over and squeezed her hand before turning her attention back to the horrible person in front of her.
Shino had released one of his bugs ahead of them and hopefully, it would reach the village soon. They could definitely use backup.
Hinata moved back over next to Neji. “Neji…” she began.
“Yes, koishii?” He murmured.
“If the ANBU manage to meet up with us soon, do we turn around? Or do we go back to Konoha?” She bit her bottom lip.
“That is a good question. I’m not sure. I suppose that we still have our business to attend to, regardless of the capture of Kabuto.” Something was nagging at Neji, but he couldn’t place it. This was way too easy. “I think it’ll depend on whether the ANBU catch up to us or not.”
Hinata looked at him. “They will. You know as well as I do how fast they travel – how fast we’d be travelling, if we were alone.”
Neji nodded. “Hai. Well, then we’ll see if Tsunade has any orders for us when we meet up with the ANBU team.”
He turned his thoughts inward. It was too much to ask that it was a coincidence that Kabuto met them on their trip. Very few people knew of this trip and even fewer knew which route they were taking. Hinata’s own father had insisted they not tell him what route they were taking because he didn’t want someone to be able to get it out of him.
Then how? He’d wanted the Byakugan eyes and the baby. They baby made sense – he saw the evidence of his atrocious acts for himself. As did the Byakugan, but Hinata wasn’t even showing. How did he even know she was pregnant? He shook his head. He needed to concentrate more on the path ahead.
By mid-afternoon, they’d met up with the ANBU corps. The black ops ninja dropped down in front of Neji and Hinata and knelt. “We are here to escort the prisoner.”
Neji recognized the tiger mask. “Do you have any orders for us from Tsunade-sama?”
“She says you are to continue your trip. She will…deal…with the prisoner.”
“Very well. Thank you.” Neji bowed slightly and the ANBU captain in front of him, whom they knew to be Yamato, or in this case Tenzo, behind the mask, turned to Kabuto and grasped his arm to lead him away. Seven more ANBU dropped out of the trees to join him. Tsunade was taking no chances.
The group watched them go. Neji turned to the others. “I believe it would be wise to stop here for the night. I know it’s early, but Hinata needs rest. She used up too much chakra in the fight.”
They all readily agreed. It took little time to make camp. By the time the fire was crackling and the tents were up, the normal forest sounds had returned. Obviously, the ANBU and Kabuto had gotten far enough away.
