fallen_angelz: Okay, the votes have been tallied and I’d like to thank everybody that’s participated in the vote!
Kakashi: Uh huh. That’s why you were listening to “Our Solemn Hour” when you tried to count the votes before and “Lies” this time around.
Neji: Why don’t you just tell us which one of us is going to be Mahina’s teacher?
Shikamaru: Troublesome. Why didn’t you just draw a name instead of going through such a troublesome process?
fallen_angelz: Look at how many times my cousins nearly killed me and how many times one of them put me in a sleeping bag before shoving me down a flight of stairs and ask that again. Anyway, it was close and it was brutal and-
Neji: And you were seriously debating whether or not to tell your brother which one won.
fallen_angelz: Dude, you’d be scared of the monkey too if he shot a gun at you while you were getting pulled at 40 miles an hour behind a van. *grins* I’d like to point out that most people from South Dakota aren’t this insane but there was like two or three feet of snow and a pickup truck’s bumper that was just begging to be attached to a rope with someone sitting on it and since my brother was home for a couple of weeks… yeah…
All three guys: JUST SAY WHO WON!
fallen_angelz: *rubs head* Fine, fine. It was close between Kakashi and Shikamaru but in the end… Shika won by one vote since I decided that I wasn’t going to include my preferences. I suppose if anybody wants a chapter where it’s the first training session between Kakashi and Neji, send me a message and I’ll get it to you ASAP. Anything after that, well, I’m struggling enough to get off of my ass since their training styles are different. Everything else will just be the same.
Chapter Twenty Three
This was so troublesome but he supposed that he couldn’t complain too much. Kakashi had a mission that required him to be out of the village for some time (although he suspected that he actually didn’t want to worry about getting Mahina seeing as rumors had been spreading that if the Copy-Nin had gotten the girl then he’d favor her since she was his goddaughter) and Neji had to tend to some kind of problem that required his immediate attention that probably had something to do with the rumor that he’d play favorites since his cousin had been on the same team with a member of the Inuzuka clan and she was Mahina’s adopted mother.
Now that he thought about it, both Jounin had an excuse that conveniently took them out of the running for teaching Team Seven. Either fate had a sense of humor or something was bound to happen that would require him to restrain the three students.
Dark eyes lazily looked over the three students that sat patiently, seeing the anxiousness in the two boys’ eyes and the same bored look in the girl’s eyes. Suzaku Raijin, age twelve. Giro Inuzuka, age twelve. Mahina Uzumaki, age ten. Oh yeah, he could tell already that he was going to have to restrain each of them at least once by the end of the day. “Okay,” he said calmly, “names and what you’re best and worst with. You can say what you like to do in you free time and where you want to end up in the shinobi community. We’ll start of with the blonde kid.”
“I’m Suzaku Raijin and I want to be the next Hokage. I’m good with genjutsu and suck at taijutsu. In my free time I like to determine my weaknesses and improve on them.”
Shika’s eyes flickered to the Inuzuka boy, seeing that he already had a puppy. If that puppy got as big as Akamaru then he wasn’t going to be cleaning up any poop. “Giro Inuzuka, I’m weak in both ninjutsu and genjutsu but I kick butt in taijutsu.” Giro said with a smug look. “In my free time I like playing with the dogs.”
Of course, that one would have been obvious. His dark eyes fell on Mahina and saw the small frown that appeared on her face. “Mahina Uzumaki. I’m good at ninjutsu and okay with taijutsu although I don’t like it. Genjutsu is the only one I really suck at. I like to draw in my free time.”
Okay, his team was actually pretty balanced when it came to strengths and weaknesses so that was at least tolerable. Giro could help Suzaku with taijutsu while Suzaku helped Giro and Mahina with their genjutsu and all the while Mahina would be helping Giro with his ninjutsu.
“Okay, let’s get started then. Follow me.”
The three students followed the man and stopped when they got to an empty training field. “Okay, kids,” Shikamaru said calmly, “stand together in a line.”
Suzaku and Giro looked at each other before pushing Mahina between them. They stared when the man tied their ankles together, trying to figure out what he had planned. “What the hell is this?! A four legged race?” Suzaku demanded angrily as he kicked his leg, ignoring the ten year old girl that nearly fell in the process.
Shikamaru smirked a bit before answering, “Close, but not quite. When you’re on future missions, it’s vital to watch another’s body language for any clues that will determine if you’re getting close to your target or not. From what I’ve seen already, none of you are interested in what the other has to offer.”
“So you’re tying us up?! That’s stupid!” Giro shouted at the Nara.
“No, it’s not stupid. This is a trust exercise that will force the each of you to work together.” Shikamaru smiled, warning them that he wasn’t playing. “Since you two boys have decided to place Mahina in the center, she’ll be the center of your universe. If you three manage to somehow keep me from catching your shadows and render me temporarily immobile, then we’ll move onto something more challenging. Until then, show me what you have.”
Mahina frowned slightly before saying, “So let me see if I understand your train of thought, Shika-sensei. Until we render you temporarily immobile, we’re going to be tied together during training and each day, someone different will be the center of the other two’s universe. If something happens to the one in the middle, like their shadow gets captured, then we each get captured and fail.”
“Exactly.”
“What?!” Suzaku shouted. “That’s complete bullshit!”
A gasp left Mahina’s lips when she saw Shikamaru made a familiar hand sign and she tried to jump back but ended up falling onto the ground. “You idiots, move!” Mahina shouted as she tried to get back up.
Too late.
The two boys struggled to break free when Shikamaru’s shadow touched theirs, keeping them trapped. “Remember, you three, this is an exercise to promote teamwork and trust in your teammates.” Shikamaru informed them. “Since you three just got caught, you failed already. You’ll have two hours to render me temporarily immobile and I don’t care how you do it. Blood-line abilities, traps, whatever your minds can think up. If I think that you’re actually trying to work together, then I won’t send you back to the academy even if you fail to render me immobile. If I think that that you’re just working together because it’s convenient, then the three of you are off to the academy.”
Releasing the jutsu, Shikamaru jumped back when Suzaku charged at him only to fall down when Giro grabbed Mahina and jerked back with her. “Idiot,” Giro hissed as he carefully moved so he could stand in front of Suzaku. “I don’t want to go back to the Academy with a bunch of little kids. Mahina-hime could easily fit in with the little kids but you and I would look rather funny getting shown up by a bunch of kids.”
“Shika-sensei gave us the tools. Now we have to use them.” Mahina added softly.
Shikamaru watched from a safe distance as the three began discussing what they would do. He was careful to keep his chakra from being detected but he knew full well that the little girl would be able to sense the small traces of Kyuubi’s chakra that had apparently rubbed off onto his own.
The man wasn’t certain that he liked the idea of others being able to locate him simply by checking for the distinct pattern that Kyuubi’s chakra had formed after rubbing off onto him. Since it wasn’t a part of his system like it was with Naruto, he couldn’t do anything to hide it and staying away from Naruto wasn’t an option. Sakura had gone off on a mission for six months and as soon as she got within thirty feet of the main gates, Mahina had been there waiting for her. Time didn’t get rid of the bijuu’s chakra, it just clung like it had hooks or something.
Of course he wondered if the little girl was going to use her family’s ability to help her teammates. It wasn’t exactly a secret among shinobi but he was fairly certain that the Inuzuka boy could at least sense that there was something about the girl. Then again, he was fairly certain that that Raijin boy could sense something too. His teachers at least described him as antisocial despite being clever. They had even described him as being downright cruel to his youngest classmate so why they were put on the same team was beyond him unless they were actually trying to reinforce the concept that you’d be working with people you didn’t like.
Yeah, that made sense. When he was in the academy, they just threw you on a team depending on where you stood in class. These days it seemed like students were getting thrown on a team with somebody two people got along with while the other two students were practically guaranteed not to like each other.
The Jounin looked up at the sky and watched the clouds floating lazily along. He wanted to watch the clouds but he needed to keep an eye on the munchkins. A sideways glance at the munchkins in question told him that they were trying to work on walking without knocking each other over. So far they were each counting and stumbling along so it’d take some time before they figured out how to move as one body.
Heh, being the teacher was actually kind of fun. Sighing, he got up and stretched a little. Time to mess up their progress just a bit to see how well they responded. There was no way in hell that they were going to render him immobile but oh well. He did say that he just wanted them to work together even though he knew that they thought that they were just supposed to render him immobile.
With a small flicker, the Jounin vanished from his current location.
