Sasuke’s eyes met Sakura’s. They held each other’s gaze for what seemed an eternity, and then his lips were on hers. His kiss was timid, soft, his tears wet on her cheeks. He gently traced the curve of her neck with his fingertips, running them along her clavicle before going into her hair, pulling her to him in another kiss.
Sakura felt herself melting into him. She leaned back down onto the bed, feeling Sasuke cover her body with his as he descended on her, his lips softly grazing hers before trailing soft kisses down her neck. “Sasuke…”
His obsidian eyes pierced hers. “Sakura…”
Sakura pushed Sasuke backward, sitting up with him. She took his hands in hers, guiding him to pull the bright orange shirt. Wordlessly, she pulled his shirt over his head, causing him to follow suit. Sakura’s fingertips danced down Sasuke’s muscled chest, leaning forward and kissing him. She ran her tongue down the side of his neck, biting his earlobe before sneaking back to his lips, which he captured hungrily in his own.
Sasuke gently lowered Sakura back to the bed, kissing her passionately. He pulled her bra off, kissing down her throat to her breasts. Her fingers tangled into his hair as he teased her nipple. She moaned breathily.
Sasuke reacted to her voice, grabbing her, kissing her lips fiercely. “Sakura…” he whispered. His hand slid down her flat stomach to the top of her shorts. In one quick motion, they were gone.
He appraised her body for only a brief moment before Sakura pulled him to her, kissing him again. She pulled his pants and boxers off without breaking contact with his lips.
Sasuke pushed her down to the mattress again, covering her with his body, kissing her deeply. His ran his long, slender fingers down her body to her core, slipping inside of her.
Sakura lost herself to his ministrations, feeling her pulse quicken as chakra surged through her body. “Sasuke…”
He moaned at the sound of her voice whispering his name. He pulled away, licking his fingers clean of her essence before looking at her once more. “Sakura…” he whispered gently, his eyes filled with pain, “I…”
Her breath hitched, taking in his ethereal grace and handsome beauty. His dark eyes conveyed desire, yet he hesitated. He looked to her uncertainly. Sakura took his hands in hers, lacing her fingers with his before placing her hands next to her head, pulling him down onto her. “Sasuke…”
Sasuke stared at her, his hesitation vanishing at her words. She nodded reassuringly, squeezing his fingers, laced with hers. Sasuke ground against her awkwardly a few times before finding her sheath and pushing in. Sakura moaned as Sasuke entered her.
Sasuke’s dark eyes drank Sakura in, mesmerized by her. Sakura studied him, his high cheekbones, his long eyelashes, his soft lips parted in concentration and wonder. Sasuke moved within her; she wasn’t able to silence the moan that escaped her lips.
Sasuke continued to stare at her, watching her face, her lips, losing himself in the depths of her eyes. Sakura managed to pull her hands free, without causing him to lose his balance, only to pull him completely on top of her, capturing him in a heated embrace, needing to feel him completely, to possess and to be possessed as he continued to move within her. She smiled at his wide eyes as she leaned forward, kissing him deeply, tangling her fingers once more in his raven hair, raking her other hand up his back.
Sakura squeezed her muscles, eliciting a sharp gasp from Sasuke, who looked at her in surprise. He increased his speed, once more placing his hands on either side of Sakura’s head in order to prop himself up and drive further into her.
Sakura’s palm found Sasuke’s cheek, and she stared at him, into him, his beautiful black eyes holding her captive. Within those dark orbs, she could see all of his pain, all of his need; she could feel his need to lose himself in her as clearly as she could feel her own.
Sakura could feel the familiar heat building in her abdomen. She whispered, “Sasuke,” as she hit her climax. It wasn’t heated or even intense, but rather washed through her like climbing into a warm bath.
“Oh… Sakura…” Sasuke gasped moments later, in ragged breaths, as he reached his own end. He pulled out quickly and collapsed beside her. With one deft motion, he had his arm around her, pulling her to him. Sakura rested her head on his shoulder, wrapping an arm across his chest.
Neither said anything, content to lie in one another’s arms. They stayed like that a long while before Sasuke broke the silence, whispering, “Sakura?”
“Mm?” she murmured.
“Did you… um…”
“Yes,” she replied, smiling at his concern.
“Are you…”
She propped herself up to look him in the eyes. “I’m… okay, Sasuke,” she said slowly, deliberately. Looking at him, she knew she meant it. She smiled, nodding in affirmation. “Are you?”
He sighed, “Yes… well… I mean-”
She sat up. “I know. It’s…” Her voice trailed off, thinking once more of Naruto. Her immediate reaction was to fight the tears beginning to well in her eyes, but she realized she no longer cared; with Sasuke, she was safe. “It’s hard.”
Sasuke’s gentle fingers wiped her tears away. “I’m sorry,” said Sakura, a sheepish smile on her face despite her tears.
“No,” Sasuke shook his head, “don’t be.” He studied her intently. “Are you really alright?”
Sakura sighed, nodding. “Yes, as I can be. You know this, Sasuke.”
“I do know,” he replied softly. He leaned back against her headboard, waiting for her to curl up in his arms next to him which she readily did. She felt reassured by the movement of his chest as he inhaled and exhaled. The ends of his dark bangs tickled her forehead. “Sakura?” From her patient silence, he knew she was listening; he sighed, “I… I miss him.”
“I know, Sasuke,” she whispered softly. “I… I do too.”
“He… was… my best friend.”
“I know Sasuke,” she struggled to keep her voice controlled.
“I never told him, Sakura,” his voice broke. She could feel his tears falling into her hair. “He never knew-”
“Sasuke,” she turned to face him, cupping his face in her hands, forcing him to look at her. It was the only time she had ever seen Sasuke cry, and she realized that he trusted her above all others to open up to her and share his grief with her. Tears began streaming down her own cheeks as she tried her damnedest to smile at him. “You never had to tell him. He knew. He always knew.
“And just like you told me that he loved me, Sasuke, Naruto loved you. He loved you too. He never doubted you. He never gave up on you.” She shook her head, smiling despite her tears, despite her grief, “Sasuke, he loved you so much.”
Sasuke nodded, blinking his tears away, his dark eyes focusing only on her. “Thank you, Sakura… for saying so.”
“I’m telling you because you need to know it, Sasuke.”
“I do…” he whispered.
“Because it’s true,” she continued, biting her lip, trying to maintain control. “You have to know how much he cared about us.” Sakura finally lost all of her composure, “How much he loved us…”
Sasuke grabbed Sakura, holding her to him. “Sakura…”
Sakura cried against him, clinging to him desperately. “Sasuke…”
“Sakura…” he said in a gently demanding tone. She took a deep breath, calming herself before looking at him expectantly. “I will never leave you.”
Sakura’s face fell, immediately feeling regret and guilt at what had happened between them, in addition to the grief and sorrow already overwhelming her. “Sasuke… I…”
Sasuke shook his head, “You are more than a friend or a teammate, Sakura. You are truly the last really important person in my life.” Sakura began to shake her head, unable to face him. Sasuke stopped her, palming her cheek and forcing her to look at him. “I don’t have any expectations about us, Sakura. I can’t promise that you’ll never lose me. I can’t live up to that promise anymore than Naruto could. But I can promise, I do promise, that I will never leave you. I will never leave you again.”
Sakura’s tears began anew. “Sasuke-kun!” she cried, throwing herself into his arms, not caring that she was still naked or now straddling him. None of it mattered.
Sasuke wrapped her in his powerful embrace, holding her to him, elated at hearing her call him ‘Sasuke-kun’ once more. After long moments, he finally pulled away. “Sakura,” he said softly, “let’s go get cleaned up. It’s pretty late, and we haven’t eaten since yesterday. I’ll take you to get some dinner.”
She sighed, nodding her assent. “Alright.”
They got out of bed. Sasuke followed her into the shower.

Neji and Tenten walked down the relatively empty street, no doubt resembling a peaceful couple to anyone who didn’t know them. Tenten’s head rested on Neji’s shoulder as they walked side by side, his arm around her waist. “You hungry Ten?” he asked quietly.
“No,” she replied.
“Have you eaten anything since yesterday?”
“I’m not hungry,” she said simply.
“You need to eat something. Especially considering tomorrow…”
“Neji, you’re not going to force me to eat,” Tenten smiled, glancing up at him. Neji gave her a look saying otherwise. “Neji…”
“Dango, barbeque, or ramen,” Neji said, “my treat. But you are going to eat something.”
“Fine…” she consented with a tired sigh. “Dango, I guess.”
“Alright.”
The two of them walked toward Neji’s favorite dango shop when he spotted the two familiar shinobi approaching the same establishment. ‘Sakura…’ he thought with a start, uncertain about how to handle the situation. Beside her was, of course, Uchiha.
He didn’t have to. Sakura walked up to Tenten, grabbing her hand. “Tenten, I am so sorry about Lee,” she said sincerely.
Tenten nodded, smiling gratefully. “Sakura, I know you did everything you could, and I appreciate it. Thank you.” Sakura nodded. “And,” Tenten continued, “I’m really sorry to hear about-”
“Thanks,” Uchiha said, stepping up to the ground and cutting Tenten off before she could say Naruto’s name.
Tenten looked back to Sakura. “You know that the shinobi funerals-”
“Are tomorrow morning,” Sakura finished. “I know. Thank you.”
Neji looked to Sakura, who avoided his eyes for as long as she could before finally giving in. Neji felt like an eternity had passed looking into her beautiful green eyes. She looked different, changed, ‘Although so much has changed…’ he realized.
“Sakura,” he said softly, hoping he wouldn’t create more tension between them by saying her name. She waited for him to continue. “Could we… could I have a few minutes?” he asked timidly, afraid of her answer.
She studied him another moment, appraising him. Neji felt as though time had crawled to a stop, forcing him to suffer through each agonizing second of her silence. Finally she nodded. “Yes.”
“Sakura,” Sasuke said quietly, “I’ll wait for you here.” She nodded, smiling at him gratefully before walking a few feet away with Neji.
Neji stopped, turning to look at Sakura, suddenly unsure of what he wanted to say. “Sakura… I’m sorry. For everything I said and for how I handled everything. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
Sakura stared at him long moments before nodding. “Thank you.”
“Honestly, I… I didn’t mean what I said… about your trying to… about that being foolish.”
“Thank you, Neji,” she said, smiling graciously. Neji could read her eyes though, which still looked wary and mistrustful.
Neji sighed in frustration, reaching out, gently grabbing Sakura’s hand. “I know I screwed up, but I want to try to work things out because… Sakura… because I…”
Sakura looked at him expectantly. Neji swallowed. This wasn’t how he’d initially wanted to say it, but it seemed as though he might never get the chance again and it was so important that he tell her how he felt. “Sakura, I love-”
“Sakura!” Sasuke’s voice interrupted them once more.
“Damn it!” Neji muttered. He shouted at Uchiha, “Can’t you wait just one minute, Sasuke?”
“I’m sorry,” Sasuke said, approaching them anyway, “I can’t.” He nodded over his shoulder to Izumo behind him. “Sakura, we’ve been summoned by the Hokage.”
Sakura looked to Neji, clearly torn at what to do, or so Neji hoped. Sasuke added, “Immediately.”
Sakura finally nodded. “I understand. Just one second, okay?” she asked. Sasuke looked from her to Neji and back, nodding. He went back to Izumo and Tenten. Sakura turned back to Neji. “I’m sorry, Neji. I do want to finish this-” seeing Neji’s eyes widen, she rephrased, “the conversation, I mean, but I have to go. Can we talk later?”
Neji sighed, nodding. He knew he couldn’t ask her to stay, not when it would cause her to defy a direct order from the Hokage. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to finish saying what he’d initially started. The moment was ruined, was no longer right. “I understand. Go. I’ll find you later.”
Sakura nodded. “Thank you… Neji.” She surprised him by stepping forward, kissing him gently on the cheek.
Neji ached to take her in his arms, to kiss her as he wanted, as he always had before everything had gotten so screwed up between them, yet he resisted.
She said again, “Thank you,” before taking off with Sasuke and Izumo to the Hokage tower.
Tenten approached Neji, concern evident on her face. “Neji? You okay?”
“Yeah…” he replied half-heartedly. “I guess I have to be.”
Tenten wordlessly stepped up to him, embracing him. Neji did the only thing he could do; he let her.

“Shishou?” asked Sakura as she and Sasuke entered Tsunade’s office. She noticed Jiraiya standing in the corner and Kakashi leaning lazily against the wall. Her keen eyes scanned their faces, looking for clues as to what would be so important as to summon her and Sasuke so late at night.
Tsunade looked grave. Sakura could feel a pit forming in her gut despite the reassuring look from Jiraiya. Tsunade turned her attention to her student. “Sakura, I need to ask you a few things.”
“Um… okay,” Sakura nodded.
“About the jutsu you performed when you found Naruto…”
Sakura’s face fell. Her eyes went to the ceiling, as though looking skyward in hopes of finding strength. Finally she nodded, sighing, “Okay.”
Tsunade studied her apprentice for long moments before asking, “What happened when you completed the jutsu?”
‘Why does it matter?’ Sakura thought bitterly. ‘It won’t change anything…’ And yet she was not about to defy her Hokage.
“It was… odd… Shishou. I can’t really explain it. I’d performed the seals and summoned all my chakra to my hands, but when I thrust my chakra into Naruto… it was like there was this moment where I could feel the life draining from me. I felt weak, like everything was going dark. And then just as suddenly, I felt this tremendous energy surge through me, throwing me back, with such force…
“I was stunned, unsure of what had happened, but when I looked to… to Naruto… nothing had happened. That’s all I know,” Sakura finished.
Tsunade and Jiraiya exchanged a look. Jiraiya turned to Sakura, “What do you know about Kyuubi’s chakra?”
“Um… not much,” Sakura admitted honestly. “I had only ever seen him in that form a few times, and when he was, I couldn’t get near him.”
“Did the chakra that repelled you feel like Naruto’s?” asked Jiraiya.
Sakura looked to Sasuke, as though he had answers to remedy her growing confusion. He stared at Tsunade, lost in thought. “Um… I don’t know. It happened so quickly, and I was upset…” She looked back to Tsunade. “I’m sorry, but why does any of this even matter?”
“Sakura…” Tsunade said carefully, “whatever you did… it sparked something.”
“Sparked?”
“In Kyuubi,” Jiraiya added.
“What do you mean?”
Tsunade continued, “What you did, it triggered something with Kyuubi’s chakra. We’re certain that’s what threw you back. But it threw you back, meaning the chakra was there.”
Sakura shook her head in frustration, unable to comprehend what she was being told. “I don’t understand. What are you saying?”
“Sakura,” Tsunade said, staring hard into her eyes, “Naruto is alive.”
