Kankuro sat behind Gaara’s desk slowly making his way through the day’s mountain of papers when Shishio popped through the door. “This just arrived from Konoha, sir. It’s the Hokage’s seal.” He handed the scroll to the puppet master.
Kankuro nodded, taking the scroll with practiced ease and coolness. “Thank you Shishio. That will be all for now.”
Alone again in the large office, Kankuro uttered a tiny prayer as he opened the reply. Relief washed over his painted face at the words he saw. He thanked whatever god had helped him.
…
The afternoon dragged on as Kankuro flipped through paperwork on the kazekage’s desk on autopilot. He was focused on the meeting ahead. Sakura was concerned Tsunade would notice her condition, however he hoped with the long journey and Gaara’s state she’d miss it. It was cute how Gaara and Sakura were already like old married people. They’d been playing shogi in total silence for an hour, completely relaxed.
A knock at the door brought them to attention. “Enter.” Kankuro and Gaara chorused automatically.
Shishio stepped in, “They are here, sir, Lord Kazekage.” He bowed to his superiors.
Kankuro replied, “Send them in.” The three shinobi stood to greet the visitors from Konoha.
Shishio barely cleared the door frame as a blonde headed orange blur ran in. Naruto lifted Sakura up, swinging her around the room in an exuberant hug. “Sakura! I missed you!” She simply laughed as the knucklehead ninja turned and hugged Gaara too. “Gaara! You don’t look sick at all!”
Gaara smiled slightly. Befuddled at his friend’s enthusiasm, he replied, “Sakura has been taking good care of me, Naruto. It’s good to see you, my friend.”
Temari, Ino, and Tsunade filed into the large office. Tsunade was irritated, “Naruto! Please remember the protocol.” She barked as the kyuubi holder returned to his proper place. “Lord Kazekage,” she bowed, “I understand you need some assistance.”
Gaara bowed in return, “Thank you for coming so quickly, Lady Tsunade. I am in your debt.”
Tsunade’s eye twitched. Sakura gulped, knowing her shishou well. “Lord Kazekage, please excuse me but, I need to speak privately with my apprentice before we discuss your problem.”
Sakura sighed. “Kankuro, I told you so.” Ino’s eyes widened, Temari held her expression perfectly stoic, and Naruto was baffled.
“Seal the room, Sakura.” Gaara ordered. She made the signs quickly, strands of chakra granting them privacy.
Tsunade’s short fuse was close to its end. “Sakura, I’m sure you want to talk to me alone.” A sharp glare highlighting her terse speech.
Kankuro looked straight at Gaara, “I believe this confirms her hypothesis, don’t you brother?”
Gaara’s poker face covered the emotional turmoil in his gut. His own sister... How could she… And clearly the godaime was not involved. “hmmm… indeed it does.”
The hokage persisted with her near daughter, “Sakura. You have a lot of explaining to do young lady.”
Ino was nearly in shock, “Sakura…” she had no words.
Naruto was completely confused. Everyone else seemed to be in on something. “Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on!”
Sakura turned to her brother with a sad smile. “Use sage mode, Naruto. I think everyone else could use a moment to meditate before speaking anyway.”
The room went quiet as the seven shinobi took deep breaths and cleared their minds. Naruto opened his orange rimmed toad eyes and took in the room. Why were there nine chakra signatures? Realization hit him, and the boisterous ninja blurted out, “Sakura, how’d you get knocked up?”
Sakura stiffened. “Naruto, we thought it would be easier to have you in the room so you don’t have to hear things second hand. But if you can’t show a little decorum and shut your trap, you can be removed.”
Naruto was suddenly aware his comment was insensitive and crude. “I’m sorry Sakura. Please don’t make me wait outside.”
Sakura softened. “Okay then. Just please be quiet, alright?” The blonde man nodded.
The hokage spoke next, “His question may have been crude, but is accurate. Sakura, please explain your condition. Though why we aren’t speaking privately is still a mystery. Please enlighten us.”
Gaara nodded to his sweetheart and took the floor, “I’m sure Sakura will discuss all the details with you at length, Lady Tsunade. However, I believe the person who can best answer your questions and mine is Temari.”
All eyes turned to the blonde wind user. She deflected, “Gaara, is that any way to greet the sister you haven’t seen for two months?” She smiled at him hopefully.
Fury flared from Gaara’s eyes as he regarded his older sister. He raised his voice a notch, the restrained violence of their father showing on his face. “Stop playing the game now, Temari, or I will break your fucking neck. Tell them. Tell us all exactly what you’ve done.”
Temari turned to Sakura her voice barely above a whisper, “You told them about him, didn’t you?”
Tears threatened to spill from Sakura’s eyes, “You left me no choice.”
Ino felt the sorrow and betrayal from her kunoichi friends. “Temari, what have you done?”
Temari sighed. She was totally busted. Even so, Sakura was pregnant, so the pieces in play would fall as they should, so long as she could keep herself and Shikamaru out of prison. “I did it all for the love of Shikamaru Nara.”
Naruto scratched his head. “I don’t get it. You’ve been living with Shikamaru for two months in Konoha. How did that get Sakura pregnant here?”
Ino was closest so she punched the loudmouth on the shoulder. “Shut up and let her talk, idiot… Go on, Temari, spill.”
The wind user fiddled with her pony tail. Sheesh she hadn’t done that since she was a child. It had to be that glimpse of their father in Gaara’s face. She suddenly prayed she wouldn’t wet her pants. Best to start at the beginning. “I fell in love with Shikamaru at the chunin exams when we were kids. I don’t know why. Nothing happened for a long time, but then a couple years ago, after Gaara became kazekage, I started going to Konoha on diplomatic missions. We spent time together, and well, he felt the same way. It wasn’t that serious until after the war. You all know how that went. There’s something about a war like that, we were both just happy to be both alive, you know? Anyway, he lost his dad and had to take his position as head of the Nara clan. Plus his responsibilities with the village meant he’d never be released from his commission.”
Tsunade concurred, “That is true. His security clearance means he’d need the consent of the village council to retire. Leaving Konoha is not an option for him.”
Now the blonde looked Gaara in the eye. “We knew it would be difficult to get your permission for me to leave Suna. Not only am I your sister and one of our strongest shinobi, I’m your lead diplomat. Additionally, if anything happened to you before you had a child, any of my children might be in line to be kazekage. There would have to be something in the deal for you to get your consent. So, we talked, and we kept our relationship from you and we waited. Sakura was at the top of our list so…”
Kankuro interrupted. This was madness! “You had a list?!?!”
Temari glared at her dark-haired brother, “Yes, we had a list. We knew we needed a strong kunoichi from the leaf, anything else would mean three-way negotiations or the perception of an uneven trade. She also needed to be someone Gaara could fall for. He’s picky you know.”
Gaara chimed in, “I prefer discerning. But, please continue.”
Temari picked up, “Anyway, Sakura was at the top of our list, so when the medical mission came up, Shikamaru played her up and made sure she got the mission over Shizune.”
Sakura smiled, “I wondered about that. How’d you get the pills?”
Temari sighed. “It was my idea. I was in Konoha for relief work after the Pein incident. Shika and I were going through old mission item’s cataloging and organizing when we found them. It was just such a strange thing to find. But I remembered them and had them sent here for Sakura. I knew if she was pregnant it would seal the deal. I’m sorry Gaara. I… I had no idea you’d get sick like this. It… It never crossed my mind I… I… I’m sorry.”
Gaara stepped to Temari and embraced her warmly. “No, Temari. I am sorry. I’m sorry because you are right, I would not have let you go easily. I’m sorry because now I know exactly how you feel. But I will not be sorry for my child. I can’t wait to meet him.”
Temari hugged him back, a small sob escaping her as she managed not to wet herself. “How do you know it’s a boy already?”
Naruto cut in, “Wait. I thought we all knew they’re both boys?”
Sakura was suddenly quite nervous, “Naruto, what do you mean ‘both boys’?”
Naruto stuttered, “But … Sakura, you said use sage mode. I did and there’s two little boy chakras right there.” He poked her abdomen just below the belly button. “Isn’t that what everyone else saw?”
Sakura had unconsciously held her breath too long. She passed out. Fortunately, Naruto was directly in front of her with ninja reflexes. He caught her, then lowered her to the floor.
They circled around her, Tsunade taking charge. “Ino, seal the room.”
Ino nodding, replacing the privacy seal that broke when Sakura lost consciousness.
Gaara brought over a glass of water. “That would explain why she’s been so sick.” He looked at Kankuro who nodded in agreement.
Ino eyed the brothers curiously, “Why would twin boys make her sick?”
Kankuro replied without hesitation, “Everyone knows boys cause more problems for their mothers. Two boys would be double trouble, obviously.”
Tsunade chuckled, “Well I don’t know about that. But as long as she’s out and can’t argue, Gaara how sick is she getting?”
Gaara nodded to the hokage, “Violently ill every morning for… almost a week. We have a routine of sorts. She runs to he bathroom before the alarm, projectile vomits, dry heaves. I hold her hair back, flush the toilet, get her water to rinse her mouth. So little I can do, really. Then I carry her back to bed since she can’t stand. Then it’s tea with one, not two, sugars and two crackers.”
Tsunade frowned at his description, her chakra glowing green as she examined Sakura carefully. Sakura woke up in the middle of the exam. “Just lay there a minute, Sakura. You fainted.” She finished the exam and Sakura sat up. “How much vomiting. Don’t lie.”
Sakura bowed her head, “It’s not that bad, really.”
Tsunade handed her the water to drink and patted her back. “Sakura, numbers.”
The pregnant kunoichi confessed, “Twice a day for the last four days. Two mornings before that. I’m not keeping much down. I’ve tried everything I can think of, but nothing is helping.”
Tsunade nodded. “We’ll get back to this later. Temari, please go on about the pills. I have a bad feeling I know where this goes.”
Temari swallowed hard. It was strange, the way they were all sitting around on the floor now, it felt more like a campfire circle than an interrogation, but she knew better. “They were fake birth control pills. I replaced Sakura’s regular prescription with them. That’s why she’s pregnant. But… how did you know they were fakes?”
Sakura pulled the pill box from the pouch on her hip. “They are really good fakes.” She took several out and passed them around so everyone could look. “But if you look carefully at the ‘P’, it’s missing a serif. I never would have known, but when I found out I was pregnant.”
Tsunade smiled, “Well isn’t that karma a bitch? I made these three years ago for a completely unrelated mission. These must be the leftovers.” She shook her head. Of all the things. “Let’s see if I have this straight… Temari, you and Shikamaru Nara want to marry. Sakura is pregnant with Gaara’s child. Er, children. Gaara has a torn chakra patch in the occipital lobe of his brain which will ultimately kill him without the surgery I’m here to perform. Did I miss anything?”
Sakura spoke up with eyes that could shame a puppy, “Shishou, Gaara and I love each other very much and I’d like your permission to marry him.”
Tsunade took in her pregnant apprentice’s heartfelt plea. “Damn I need a drink.”
Gaara had a bottle and two cups. “Perhaps we should speak kage to kage for a bit.”
Sakura looked at him hesitantly. Gaara stepped to her side and kissed her lightly, whispering in her ear, “I’m the kazekage, you’re the medic, right?”
…
The kages emerged just in time for dinner, a scroll with both their seals in hand. Five sets of anxious eyes sat in the waiting area. Tsunade sealed the room. “What’s said here is top secret. Understood?” They all nodded. “All the arrangements are set. Sakura will marry Gaara next week after his surgery. Temari will marry Shikamaru two weeks after that in Konoha. The surgery will be tomorrow. Sakura, I’ll need you to go over the details of the scans with us. You, Ino and I will do a dry run in the morning.”
Sakura nodded, “Yes, Shishou. I’m glad you brought Ino. It’s a wise precaution that buys us some leeway.”
Kankuro noted the detail immediately, “Explain, please, Sakura.”
“Ino will be able to use a section of her brain to make a back up of key parts of Gaara’s conscious mind. Vital memories, information that he can’t live without or no one else has, that sort of thing. It will take her and Gaara a couple of hours to set it up. It can help after the surgery. If he has gaps in his memory from mild brain damage, the backup can restore him faster.” She clarified.
Kankuro raised an eyebrow, “And what happens to the copy after that?”
Ino answered, “It will disappear in my next purge cycle. Don’t worry, Kankuro. The Yamanaka have used this technique successfully for years. Suna’s secrets will be safe.”
Kankuro eyed the shapely blond skeptically. He wanted more details. Now that he looked at the hot kunoichi he really wanted more details. Ino… where had he… oh yes. The puppet master smiled, “This is totally unrelated, but, do you like to dance?”
