I'm not dead! Sorry its been so long. Here is the next chapter, sorry its kinda short, and unbeted. Its kinda all I have right now.
Let me know what you think. Any an all thoughts are welcome. Even flames. But I must warn you that I will be just as mean to you as you are to me if you flame. But I still wanna hear it.
Sasuke POV
I don't know how long I knelt on the cold grass. It was well after dark when Itachi found me. He picked me up and carried me home. He put me in bed, kissed my forehead and closed my door. And he never said a word. Not one.
I don't remember falling asleep. I woke to my mother running her fingers through my hair. She had a sad smile on her face.
"A mother knows her kids." she said. "I knew when he showed up that you would leave. I also know that it was not your first choice. I had so hoped he would let you choose, but I guess he just can't let go."
Her words sent shivers up my spine. Her face had taken on a dark look and for the first time in my life I was afraid of my mother. As she kept stroking my hair she continued to speak.
"Too bad he can't really do anything. He may have made it in here once but not again. Too bad in twenty-four hours you wont remember him anyway. Now he's just made you miserable for no reason."
At her words I jumped away from her.
"What does that mean? You will go ageist my wishes and steal my mind from me again?"
"Nothing can be stolen from someone that gives it. You gave yourself up, you chose this. You wanted to die and this is how you chose. In twenty-four hours you will be dead. You are out of his reach and well hidden. He wont find you in time. You chose the throw him and everything real away. You could have been happy here, but he took that away from you. Now you will just be miserable for the last few hours you have left."
As she said that last bit she got up and walked away. All I could do was sit in stunned horror looking at my door. I don't know how long I sat there but a tapping at my window finally drew my attention away from it.
Itachi was sitting on my window sill, with a note facing the glass.
"I know how to help him find you. I want to help you get out."
Real world narrative.
Light was just beginning to dawn on the forest. The make shift camp was already packed and the fire was out. As the first light beams began to filter down the two ninja began to move at break neck pace.
"So mind telling me how you know where to go? I never believed all that crap about the sage mode being able to find him."
"You saw the thread. It leads me to him. And its telling me we don't have too much longer before he dies."
"How did you get that anyway? Its not easy to mess with a soul and I would know."
"On our first mission Sasuke died. That was the first time the fox ever spoke to me. I had known he was there but we had never talked before. He said that he had found a seal on my soul and if he took it off I could save Sasuke.
I told him to do it. After that I found myself able to see Sasuke's soul leaving. I grabbed it before it could fade away and using a part of my own soul, I bound them both to his body. I brought him back, but like I told you before my power comes at a price."
"So now your bound to him."
"Not only that but he has the only human piece of my soul left in this world. People think that if a soul changes the person changes but its just not true. I have used too much of Kurama's power for my body to handle without being forced to adapt. My body had to adjust to the demonic power or risk being torn apart cell by cell. My soul was too human, and didn't make it. The only piece left that is truly mine is with Sasuke. And I can never get it back."
"So thats how you plan to find him but how do you plan to get him back? I know you can't wake him up the same way as before. The genjutsu will have altered its-self after your first intrusion." He pointed out.
"He will wake himself up when I tell him to. He knows that world is fake now, it wont be able to manipulate his mind so easily anymore. I just hope I don't have to reveal just how I was able to get to him in the first place. Not a conversation I want to have in this lifetime."
"You don't want him to know about him having a piece of your soul."
It wasn't a question and Naruto didn't answer.
"Is it really that bad that he knows? Is it worth your life to keep him from knowing he owes you his life?"
"I can't die until he does. Maybe not even then. The piece of my soul is being kept alive by him and in turn calls me back to this plane of existence should I suffer a fatal wound, the fox then heals me and I keep on living. And yes, it is worth whatever pain I must endure to keep him from knowing. He hates me enough as is. To find out he has been walking around with a piece of me inside him? It would only make him wish to die even more."
"But from what I can see you don't seem to fight Death. In fact you seem to almost embrace it. Why save someone who doesn't want to be saved?"
"His mind may want death but his soul yearns for the life he has denied himself all these years. I can't bare to see him die with such a yearning to live. I would rather live a thousand years and suffer a thousand deaths than to see him die but once."
"I wish everyone understood that. The soul deep need to see someone smile. The yearning to hear them laugh that is stronger than your own need for air to breath. The feeling that makes every cell in your body crave their presents like an addiction. Its not easy to live with, and its even harder to understand." Orochimaru said.
"And after you save him, what will you do then? As you yourself have satiated you don't have a village to return to, and you can't die without Sasuke." Orochimaru pointed out.
"I don't know. I have a few places I can go till everyone stops looking for me. It would help if you went back and told them I died saving Sasuke. No one looks for a dead man, and Id rather them remember me as human than a monster."
"You aren't a monster. I would know, I think even Death was relieved to see me knowing I would not be making extra work for it anymore."
"It doesn't matter what you think. It matters that the village even now has a fear of me. Or the fox rather. They wont see a man who has given everything for them. They will see a monster set free. You didn't answer my question."
"You didn't ask one."
"It was implied. Kinda. Will you go back and tell everyone I'm dead?"
"I told you I wanted to come with you. I know that if I leave, you will take off and you wont be found if you don't want to be."
"Then we will have to have Sasuke spread the word. You can tell him and then leave with me if thats really what you wanna do. But I still don't understand why you don't wanna go back when you can."
"I told you. We are family and I will do right by you. Although I though you would be immortal once the seal broke entirely."
"I practically am already. But when the seal breaks it would take a lot more than the five nations to wound me enough to kill me, even without the piece of my soul Sasuke has. I will be even harder to kill than Kurama was. With Sasuke keeping my soul grounded to this world it doesn't matter how you hurt me, I will always come back so long as he is alive."
"You still didn't tell me I could come with you. That it was alright."
"You didn't ask." Naruto said smirking.
"Don't be a smart-ass." Orochimaru snapped.
"Shh. We are getting close." Naruto whispered.
The both of them ran the last half mile in silence. Then the vines attacked.
It was a brutal assault. The vines sprouting poisonous thorns and even flours spraying pollen to try to put them to sleep. Naruto lead the way not caring if he was cut or sprayed. The poison not slowing him down. The pollen being eaten away by chakra in his lungs before it could do anything.
Orochimaru wasn't so lucky. Cuts littered his arms and legs, his affinity with the snakes and their venom the only thing keeping him alive. But while the cuts where small they here numerous and refused to clot, causing blood to leak with every step.
He was fading fast.
Naruto was getting too far ahead of him to be of any protection, and the vines could see their prey was getting weaker. Orochimaru also noted that the slower he was, the less the vines attacked Naruto.
At the realization hit Orochimaru he stopped running. If it took his life to repay his debt then so be it. The vines now hesitated at his sudden stop. The hesitation didn't last long.
As the vines reared to attack again, a sliver of orange flashed around him. The vines fell, screeching.
"You didn't really think I would leave you to die, did you?" Naruto said holding a vial out to him.
"Not for a second." the snake said, taking the vial and downing the silver-ish liquid inside. "What was that? It tasted like dirt. Wet dirt."
"You ask that after drinking it?"
"Well its probably not poison. Makes no scene to poison someone who is already poisoned." he said.
"For most people that makes scene, yes. It was to counter act the poison of the vines. Thanks for playing decoy, by the way. It helped. I'm almost to Sasuke now."
"We are?"
"No. I am. I sent a clone to help you, and kept going. The vines can't see clones, so it was a perfect ambush."
"Then why didn't you send a bunch after him in the first place?! Save us all the trouble.'
"Clones aren't durable enough and can't use the soul thread. Only the original can because clones don't have souls to start with. A bunch of clones would never be able to find him.
"I will take you to where we need to be. Having you there before things start will speed things along."
"What things?"
"Killing the vines, of course."
Dream world. Sasuke POV
All I could do was sit in stunned horror looking at my door. I don't know how long I sat there but a tapping at my window finally drew my attention away from it.
Itachi was sitting on my window sill, with a note facing the glass.
"I know how to help him find you. I want to help you get out."
I could hardly believe it. I was going home.
After all I had been through. All the hard work to avoid the hunter nin, braving the apparently harmless flours to get to the forest of
Dreams, finally getting to the point where he could die in peace.
And I was going back.
Itachi was just ahead of me, leading him god only knew where. The only thing he said when I had opened my window was that they had to leave right then if they wanted to make it on time.
Make it where? I still didn't know.
I didn't ask.
I didn't really care.
If Itachi could get me out…..
We where already miles outside the village of Leaves. I didn't really know the terrain well but I had to guess we where coming up on the border of Rice country. I don't really remember the journey here the first time, with Orochimaru's men.
It was beginning to get dark by the time I realized I hadn't eaten all day. At the thought my stomach protested the absence of food loudly. It was the first time Itachi stopped.
"If you where hungry, you could have said so sooner." he said pulling food out of his pack.
"You made it seem like we needed to hurry. Besides I didn't realize till now that I was." I said taking the food bar.
"We do need to hurry, and I know that that wont do you much good for real, but you need to stay sharp. We can't afford to be too far away when the time comes."
"How was I supposed to get out if you didn't decide to help me?" I question between bites.
"You can leave from anywhere in this world. But if you are closer to where you are here then your mind will be closer to where you are there. It will help you wake up faster and keep you from longing for this world so much. It will help you readjust back to what is real." Itachi explained.
"How do you know we need to hurry?" I ask.
"I can feel the vines panicking. They know Naruto is close to ending them. They are doing all they can to stop him but there's nothing they really can do. The closer you are in this world to where your body is in that one the faster you will be able to wake up and the faster you can get away."
"How do you know that I will wake up faster?"
"Why do you ask so many questions? I, like all here but you, am connected to them. I know what they know. I don't know who they know, I just know that they do. If your finished we need to move, we have a long way to go still and very little time."
At my nod we where off again. I don't know how far we managed to get but the next thing I knew, the world around me spun in a dizzying array of colors, the likes of which I had never before seen, before going black.
Let me know what you think. And I wanted to say thanks to all of you for putting up with me, and for all the support on the story so far, it means a lot to me.
