Akane could only stare after such a confession. He wasn't aware of any special looks he gave, or didn't give, for that matter. Still, the tone of Kankuro's soothing voice had lulled him into a calm. "You don't know me as well as you think..." It was something to say, at least, in an attempt to prove that Akane still had some secrets. It was unfortunate that he was incorrect, as the face he was making now was telling Kankuro to kiss him again. Obliging, Kankuro leaned down to do so.
It seemed that the world was right again, as the three pairings had taken themselves and their lovers back to bed. It was the forth pairing, however, that was not fairing so well. Sai and Neji had been out for a week, trying to track down the hideout of Kabuto's base. They had a few good leads, which lead them to the deep desert. There was nothing around outside of mountainous orange structures of sandstone. Caves that lead for miles, only to lead nowhere at all. Sai had been using his drawings to send out scouts, only to find that the caverns were in giant, tangling circles.
Neji kept a very detailed log of the explorations, and the number of failed attempts they took trying to find an entrance. It was finally decided to head to the Hidden Sand Village to gather the only two people who might know where Kabuto was hiding. Sitting in the waiting room for the Kazekage was annoying, and Neji gave an exasperated sigh while sitting next to Sai. He hadn't had a bath in a few days and frankly, felt a bit...dirty. He also didn't want to deal with the inseparable couples. Standing, Sai and Neji gave a humble bow to Gaara as he walked into the room. The Kazekage bowed back, then extended his arm towards the door of his office.
Going inside, the ANBU members took a seat in front of the large, wooden desk that was in front of Gaara's throne-like chair. Before Neji could break the ice, Sai took it upon himself to be as rude and informal as possible. "We need your ugly boyfriend and that stupid, dickless Uchiha."
"....Pardon?" Gaara's face held a smile, but his twitching eyebrows told a different story about his mood.
"Sai!" The man got a prompt wack from Neji, who sighed deeply. "I apologize, Kazekage. What we mean to say that we are at a lost finding Kabuto's base of operations. We believe that Shiro and Sasuke, who have previously been to these multiple places, would be able to help us scout out the location..." Keeping his placid smile, Sai only rubbed his arm in the place it was hit.
"That's the same thing I said, except with more words..."
"That's not what you said!"
Clearing his throat, Gaara was able to stop the couple's bickering. "I see. Well I'm sorry, but Shiro is not leaving my side. As for Sasuke...Well you'll have to ask him, but I doubt Naruto will allow him to leave on his own." Looking ahead, Neji looked even more irritated. That's exactly what he did not want to hear, but knew he was going to hear it anyway. It took a moment for him to stop chewing his lip and forced himself to ask the question he didn't want too. "...If he can't leave your side, would you please accompany us, Kazekage?"
"Absolutely not, I am far too busy here."
That was it. Losing his temper, Neji stood as he slammed his hands on the desk. "You have no idea how important it is that we find Kabuto! With all due respect, you're being extremely selfish and reckless for trusting a minion of Kabuto to begin with. We must insist on taking Shiro with us, with or without your consent!" Laughing, Sai pulled Neji back down, keeping his calm.
Gaara only looked, his eyes narrowing. "You fail to understand the situation, Neji. Kabuto has no choice, but to come out of hiding and attack here. We have what he needs to complete his plans, whatever they are."
"Plans? What do you know of his plans? His mission is to gather the tailed beasts and the only one he won't be able to reach is the nine-tails..."
"And the first, and the sixth."
"Excuse me? The first? But the first one was..."
"....Exactly."
Calming down, Neji sat down blinking. "Kazekage...Gaara...Are you saying that you're still in possession of the one-tailed beast?"
Putting a smile back on, Gaara gave a nod. "It seems that I am. Some new information came...and once a Jinchuriki, always a Jinchuriki. Even though it was..extracted..." Putting his hand to his chest, Gaara continued to speak. "There is something that always remains as I am alive. Over time, it has reformed inside of me."
"....And what of the six-tailed?"
"It's Shiro, isn't it?" Sai answered Neji's questions, putting the pieces together. "Shiro holds the six-tailed beast. He's cold-blooded like a snake, but that makes it more perfect for a beast who is based on water techniques. He's a perfected host."
Gaara gave a nod. "Correct. It seems that he was forced to be a host before Kabuto changed him, but the change made him stronger." Neji had to stop to rub the bridge of his nose.
"So, you're saying you want to wait until Kabuto comes to collect his property? And what of Sakura? Our reports indicated she's...involved...with Kabuto. We know of how the Uzumaki twins came to be. We fear she is...producing his offspring to be tested on."
"If she is with Kabuto, then she will die with him." Sai nodded, agreeing to Gaara's resolve and words. Not to mention, he never liked her. It worked out well either way.
"We can't simply dismiss her as dead. Naruto will not accept that, just as he didn't accept Sasuke's demise. He will attempt to stop any action against her...you know that."
"We cannot say for sure...Frankly, with his children and Sasuke in danger, he might surprise us."
"The Hokage will not overlook his actions a second time. Sasuke was his one chance and they were both exiled for it. If he were to interfere with Sakura's capture or death for her actions, he will..."
"Naruto is not your problem, Neji. Or your Hokage's. Naruto and Sasuke Uzumaki are under my command, and I will be the one to punish them, were they to do anything traitorous."
"But Gaara, you can't just..."
"The ANBU are part of the Hidden Village, Neji. Remember where you are."
The grey eyes narrowed before turning to look at Sai. Sai looked back and took Neji's hand, before this got personal. "We understand. We're going to talk to them now." Grunting, Neji pulled his hand away, frustrated at the situation. "Fine." Gaara stood, watching the two of them leave. He understood entirely what he just said, but he also meant it. As much as he wanted to argue, he did agree that Sakura had gone too far, but could not let his personal feelings control him. It wasn't too long ago where she nearly killed Shiro, who blocked the attack that was meant to take Gaara's own life. He could still feel that rage, boiling inside him with every passing day.
Clenching a fist, he looked down as it turned into a familiar sand claw that haunted his nightmares as a child. Ah, so it was that rage again. The same rage which would warp his body into the one-tailed beast, had returned. Releasing the anger, the claw faded as Gaara calmed himself down. It wasn't something he was able to do as a child, but curbing such blood thirsty thoughts was something he taught himself to do as an adult. Still, Gaara wondered if he could control himself in front of Sakura. Or better yet, did he even want too?
