Chapter 23

Shikamaru wandered into the little nook when he saw Kimimaro approaching, it would give them a bit more privacy, “I was wondering when we’d get to have a chat.”

Kimimaro stared at him for a bit, eyes narrowed, “You’re in love with him.”

The corner of Shikamaru’s lip curled upward, “The boyfriend’s always seem to figure that out quickly.”

“You can’t have him, he’s mine.”

“Naruto is not an object, you don’t own him”

“And neither do you. I bet that burns doesn’t it?” Kimimaro smirked.

“I’m not the one that’s ever mistaken that,” Shikamaru drawled back, leaning against the wall, “You two will never last. I know Naruto.”

“And does he know you? Does he know about your feelings?”

“He doesn’t need to know,” Shikamaru said calmly.

“Why not? You’re best friends aren’t you? Shouldn’t there be no secrets between the two of you? Or is it you’re afraid of his reaction? Scared that he’ll reject you or won’t think of you the same, scared he’ll leave you?” Kimimaro moved closer to Shikamaru when he stiffened, like a shark scenting blood on water.

“Naruto is there for me just like I am there for him.”

Kimimaro edged closer, “Hmm, funnily enough that doesn’t answer my question. So which is it, that he’ll reject you or just won’t be comfortable around you anymore? That he won’t look at you the same anymore?”

“I am confident enough in my relationship with Naruto to know that me being in love with him will have no effect on our relationship. Can you say the same? Seems to me that he was ashamed to introduce you. I had to do that, he didn’t even want to confirm it when Sai asked, does that hurt?”

Kimimaro glared at him before smirking again, “Ah, so it’s rejection then that you’re afraid of.”

“I’m not afraid of rejection.”

“Then why haven’t you told Naruto how you felt before now.”

“I don’t need to answer any of your questions but you’ve met the infamous ex, and I certainly wasn’t expecting Naruto to show up here with you,” Shikamaru’s lips pressed into a thin line.

Kimimaro smiled placidly, “Well then, since I’ve gotten in your way so much, why don’t we tell him. I won’t try to stop you.”

Shikamaru snorted, “And why would I do that? You guys will break up soon anyway and I wouldn’t trust you as far as I can throw you.”

“Who said that I wouldn’t tell him whether or not you agreed?”

Shikamaru felt himself pale a bit before he slowly smiled, “Are you sure your farce of a relationship would survive that?”

Kimimaro frowned, “Farce?”

“He hasn’t even slept with you, has he? You sure you should be acting so smug? He gets attached to people that he has sex with, if he hasn’t had slept with you yet it means that he’s prepared to break up with you. So are you sure it should be me you’re worrying about, his friends do influence him greatly.”

“I might not last long with him but you must know that you don’t have a chance if you haven’t told him even though you’re friends, I can relate to Naruto far more than you ever would. I understand him.”

Shikamaru snorted, “You mean what Kyuubi’s been training him in? Do you think that’s news to me?”

Kimimaro’s eyes widened in shock, “Well then how about I just tell Naruto your secret? Even if I don’t end up with him you won’t either but I’ll have had what you want even if it’s for a little while.”

Shikamaru chuckled quietly before he shook his head, “I never once said that Naruto would reject me, did I? The one thing you’re forgetting to factor in here is that he loves me, Kimi dear. What do you think Naruto would do, friendship oriented man he is, if he found out that his best friend- whose been there for him through thick and thin- loved him? He’d be with me just to avoid hurting me even if he didn’t like me back. Our bond is stronger than yours and it always will be. So are you sure you want to test that? Go ahead, I dare you. It would save me the trouble. The only reason I haven’t told him is because I don’t want to force his hand, being the good friend that I am. So go and do it,” Shikamaru gestured out of the nook.

Kimimaro didn’t move, when he was silent Shikamaru grinned at him, “I. Win.”

Kimimaro moved towards the opening of the nook, “This time, but you won’t win everything.”

“I don’t lose,” Shikamaru stated flatly.

“I think you’re wrong, we both have our specialties...”

“I’d like to see you try, Naruto is one of mine.”

“And yet he’s still with me,” Kimimaro left.

After he was gone Shikamaru leaned against the wall, relaxing tense muscle, and stared at the ceiling, “Yeah, he’s still with you. I’m going to have to do something about that.”

He waited a few moments more before joining the rest of his friends, they were still objecting to the Kimimaro and Naruto was starting to looked stressed. He looked at Kimimaro and raised an eyebrow before stepping behind Naruto and pulling him into his arms. Naruto relaxed against him and Shikamaru looked at his friends, “You guys aren’t helping. I’m sure you can find a better way to express yourselves than browbeating him.”

“As if you were any better,” Ino scoffed.

Shikamaru petted Naruto’s arms, relaxing him, “Did you hear me arguing with him?”

“Do you disagree?” Sai asked.

“I never said that,” Naruto stiffened in his arms and he started kneading at his muscles instead of just stroking, “But it’s still his decision to make.”

Shikamaru continued to hold Naruto in his arms, ignoring Kimimaro’s glare. He sighed, stirring the hair on the nape of Naruto neck, things were going to get messy. He looked around and found Hinata sitting on the couch with Gaara sitting close to her. A small smile curved his lips- someone was happy, at least there was that.
