Three hours later, Sakura lay curled up against Kakashi, her body humming. It was the only way to describe the almost electric sizzle that her nerves seemed to be feeling at that moment. "What happened?"
Kakashi grinned down at her. "It's your fault, you're going to have to go back to wearing your regular ninja clothes." He paused a minute to consider something. "On second thought, don't bother. I don't think that will help. You see, I'm in love with you, I love your body and you're incredible in bed. I'd be insane to not want you constantly."
Sakura laughed. "Yes, well, you're downright deadly in clothes and out." She sobered then. "But there was something else tonight."
Kakashi nodded. "I think there was something in the food. Or that champagne, I don't know which. It seemed to make a number of people much more willing to have sex." He snorted. "You should have seen this one couple, I tilted my head to the side and still couldn't figure out how they managed it."
"Perv." She said without heat. "I wonder if there isn't something else though." She sat up a little and looked up at him. "What if that's how they get the women?" Then she sat bolt upright. "That's it!"
Kakashi considered her a minute. "I know what you're thinking, but no."
She raised an eyebrow at him. "What do you mean, no?"
"No. Look, you don't want to do that. I don't want you to do that. The theory is great, but…" Kakashi paused, once more unsure if his reticence was personal or professional. He had to admit it was both. "I just don't think it's a good idea to take that kind of chance. They likely drug the women. Did you see how they were? None of them even once tried to get away."
Sakura sat back, thinking. She'd seen them alright. She hadn't given thought to the idea that they may have very well already been used. If they were being sold and were obviously not virgins anymore, then Fushinji wouldn't care if they were used again, as long as they could do what they were supposed to. But in the end, as a kunoichi, she knew the dangers of the job and that was something that could always be required. At least she hadn't had to use that sort of option before she'd given her virginity voluntarily and in love.
She couldn't be expected to put off that kind of thing forever. "I'm not worried about drugs. I'm a poison expert, remember? I can either take something ahead of time or, if I don't have time for that, I can likely take care of it after the fact before I'm incapacitated." She waved one hand vaguely. "The problem here is that we still don't know where they take them or even the true scope of this. What you heard in the meeting tells me that they have big aspirations. Big deal, we'd never let it get that far, but I just don't like the idea of sending them packing and let them do whatever they want back where they come from, too. I mean, I know they're not under our jurisdiction, but they're still human beings. We can't let it continue."
Kakashi sighed. "I agree, but organized crime is an extremely difficult monster to beat. They're often like hydra - you can cut off one head, but it only grows two more in its place."
"Then where's the heart of it? Do we even have the ability to do anything about it from here?" She flopped back onto the bed and tried to think, but her body was still humming from Kakashi's loving and it was late.
"I don't know yet. Let's get some sleep and we'll see what we come up with in the morning. Whether we like it or not, it may be time to call in help." He gathered Sakura close and pulled the blankets over them.
"I know." She frowned into the darkness, but snuggled into Kakashi's warmth. There was an answer here, but it was beyond her at that point. Within a few minutes, she fell into a fitful sleep, filled with bad dreams.

The only thing the morning sun brought with it was more questions. After showering and dressing, Kakashi summoned Pakkun for another message to Tsunade, this time with a request for aid. Neither was looking forward to ending their time alone, but the mission was getting more complicated.
Their breakfast at the teahouse was quick, as both were anxious to hear what Tsunade would have to say. Back in the room, they gathered their clothes for a quick laundry run while they waited for Pakkun to return. Thankful that the inn had a washer and dryer at the end of the hall, they sat in the room, discussing options.
"The only thing I can think of to find out for sure where the ships go is to be on it. You have to figure that there's a single point on the other end to move them to before they…" she paused, unable to finish the thought. "Well, anyway, but where?"
"I agree that they all probably go the same place, but there are any of hundreds of places they could sail to from here." They walked together to the laundry room, their voices low. "This is the difficult part of getting involved with another ninja, especially a teammate. I don't want you within a hundred leagues of these guys."
Sakura smiled. "I can handle myself. You know that."
"That's not the point. As your husband, I want to protect you from it entirely." He opened the washer and began pulling the clothes out. Sakura had opened the dryer but just stood there, staring at him. He handed her a couple of wet articles of clothing, not realizing that she wasn't moving. "What?" He asked her.
She shook her head. "We're not really married. Not yet."
"What?" He paused, momentarily non-plussed.
"You called yourself my husband."
"I did?" He blinked at her a minute, realizing she was right. He'd already started thinking of her in those terms. Somewhere along the way this past week, he'd simply stopped reminding himself that they weren't really married. "Huh. I did." He shrugged. "Whether we're simply engaged or already married doesn't change the fact that I'd just as well prefer to protect you from that kind of situation entirely."
He leaned one hip against the washer as she finished loading the dryer and started it. When she had, they walked back to the room together and when the door was closed, he said, "I recognize that there is a chance at some point even after we're married that you're going to get sent on a mission because of your gender. I won't like it. But we're ninja. I am marrying you, knowing that. I can also hope it never has to happen. There will be others that can take those missions - kunoichi who aren't married."
He stopped what he was saying when Pakkun appeared. "Yo boss!" He padded first over to Sakura and sat at her feet, giving her his best puppy eyes. Sakura laughed and picked him up, scratching him behind the ears. He rewarded her with lavish doggy kisses on her cheeks and face.
"Can you two remember maybe that I'm here?" Kakashi's amused voice came from the other side of the little table.
Pakkun stopped kissing Sakura, but didn't move right away. He sat while she continued to scratch and rub him another moment before sighing and jumping down. "By the way, boss, the others are in agreement. We like her for our alpha bitch."
Kakashi stared at him a moment, trying not to laugh. Sakura's face was bright red. "I recognize that that's the proper terminology, but could you perhaps not refer to Sakura as a 'bitch'? In human terms, that's not a nice word."
Pakkun just tilted his head. Sakura spoke up to save him. "It's okay, it's what he understands. I just didn't realize he understood all of what's between you and I."
Pakkun looked over his shoulder at Sakura. "I couldn't have missed it if I wanted to. The scent is strong enough to catch from a mile away."
Sakura had to forcibly remind herself he wasn't talking about her smelling badly. He was a dog. Everything was about scent to him. "Okay. I'll, um, take that."
Kakashi had enough. "Did Tsunade send a reply?"
"Oh, yeah." Pakkun trotted over to him and sat patiently while he removed the scroll. He read it over quickly.
"Okay, Pakkun, thanks."
"Yeah, okay." He went over to Sakura again and gave her the puppy eyes one more time. She bent down and scratched him behind the ears again before he poofed.
"She's sending some help. Another 'couple' probably, but she's not saying who. We're not to do anything rash - like offering you up as bait. Not yet, anyway, though she's less hesitant about the idea than I am." He frowned at this thought, then continued. "We should expect them late tomorrow sometime. For now, we're supposed to lay low and wait."
Sakura sighed. Doing nothing would drive her nuts. "I think I'd like to find a bookstore or something. I can't just sit around for the next day and wait, it'll drive me crazy."
"I can show you one. I found it our first day here." He said and stood. "Let's get the laundry back and we'll head down there now. I've finished my book, anyway." He walked up to her and pulled her into his arms. "Of course, we could just stay in bed until tomorrow. I'm sure we could find inventive things to do."
Sakura closed her eyes. She'd like nothing more than to do nothing but that, but even she knew that you could only have so much sex in a twenty-four hour period. "Maybe we should recharge our batteries a bit before we attempt to kill each other again."
Kakashi chuckled against her neck. "Are you saying you're tired?"
Sakura opened one eye and glared down at him, but it was lost as she couldn't see his face. "Ha. Hardly. I'm only trying to think of you. I know you older men wear out pretty quickly."
"Is that a challenge, Sakura?" He pulled her against him to show her that he was perfectly able to keep going.
"I wouldn't want to give you a challenge you couldn't handle. Or perhaps you're simply so much of a perv that you can't think of anything else to do? Maybe I'm that boring?"
He grinned down at her. "Ah ah ah. You can't dodge it that easily." He leaned in and kissed her thoroughly. "As it happens, though, I do agree with you. There are plenty of other things to do." He patted her butt and opened the door. They made quick work of folding the laundry and putting it away, all the while joking and teasing about their ability to do something other than have sex.
They had a quick lunch at the ramen stand, then headed to the bookstore. Surprisingly, they were able to spend a good deal of time simply browsing books and when they went to check out, Sakura was surprised to find that both she and Kakashi had picked out the same book. They stopped for a moment, just grinning like fools at the situation.
When they came out of the bookstore, they discovered that they'd been in there longer than they'd thought. They could see that the sun was just beginning to go down, so they strolled to the docks and watched as the evening gulls hunted for their dinner over the water. Sakura breathed in the sea air and realized she was hungry.
They stopped for tempura takeout for dinner, then headed back to the room. As they sat eating, Kakashi studied her a moment. "There's something I need to ask you."
She looked up from her box and quirked an eyebrow. "Oh?"
He speared his chopsticks into his box and sat back, trying to figure out how to ask it. "Are you…um…" he scratched the back of his head nervously, his eye crinkling. "What I mean is, do you…" He couldn't believe this was so hard to get out. "Have you been using birth control?"
Sakura stared at him a moment. "Yes. It's extremely easy to do. I don't have to use much chakra concentration on it, but I do need some chakra…" she trailed off as a thought hit her.
Kakashi figured it out at the same time. She swallowed hard. "When will you know?" He asked her.
She started counting backwards, then her eyes widened. "Two weeks." Her cheeks reddened as she realized what that meant.
He nodded, but he was still puzzled. "Why is that so significant?"
She closed her eyes a moment to gather herself together. She heard him move and when she opened her eyes, he was crouched next to her. He laid one hand on her leg, the other he used to brush a stray lock of hair back from her face. "It means that I'm at my most fertile right now." Her voice was barely above a whisper.
She stared morosely into her box of food while that sunk in a moment. She had no idea how he would react. Good grief, they'd just admitted their love. They'd just gotten engaged. They weren't even married yet. She tried not to look at him, but failed miserably.
He was simply staring at her. She couldn't tell at first where his eyes were aimed, but then realized that they were aimed at her belly. Could she be? Right now? He'd never thought he'd actually have a child. Of course, he'd never known anyone he'd want one with.
And Sakura was, without a doubt, the one. Hadn't he done with her pretty much everything he'd ever avoided? Hadn't he asked her to marry him? She'd seen under the mask, she knew his secrets, she understood him as no one else ever had.
She'd said yes. But marriage did not always mean family, especially for a kunoichi. Did she want a child? His?
He let his gaze travel slowly from her belly up to her face. When their eyes met, he saw fear, love, uncertainty, but no revulsion, no disappointment. "Do you want one? We haven't talked about it…"
She blinked at him, once. "Yes. I guess I'd just assumed you wouldn't. I have no idea why."
He let out the breath he hadn't realized he was holding, then smiled. "Well." He said, and the hand that had rested on her leg moved to lay on her belly, over her womb. "Well. If you are, then I guess we'll be parents. If not, then when things settle down and we're home and married, I suppose we talk about when."
She couldn't believe it. He wasn't freaking out, wasn't unhappy at all. She closed her eyes again briefly and savored the feeling of connection with him in that moment. She laid her hand over his on her belly and hope she didn't realize she had, flared. She realized she wanted it, wanted this.
He kissed her hand, then moved it aside and kissed her belly. "I suppose if you are, then we'll have a solid timetable for the wedding, eh?"
She laughed. "My mom is going to be thrilled. One way or the other, I think she'll be happy." When he gave her a questioning look, she said, "I can't do much better than a former Hokage, can I?"
"I was never confirmed, thank you very much." He answered grumpily, then laughed. "You really think she'll be okay with it?"
She nodded firmly. "I do. She might have preferred I wait until after the wedding to get pregnant, but hey…" She took a deep breath and blew it out. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I can probably examine myself in another week or so. By then the first hint of a second chakra signature should be present. Until then, I suppose I won't be drinking a whole lot, eh?"
He laughed, but sobered. "This also means that there's no way I can let you offer yourself as bait." When she would argue, he held up a hand, "at least until I know if you're carrying my child? A man can only take so much."
She closed her mouth without speaking, then nodded. He was right. If she was carrying a child, there was way too much risk to the baby for her to do that. And Tsunade, even if she agreed it was a good plan, would have her head if she did it while pregnant.
Her body chose that moment to remind her she hadn't eaten much yet. They both laughed as her stomach growled. Kakashi stood up and pulled his chair around so he was a bit closer to her, then sat and went back to eating.
She let her mind wander while she finished her dinner. Images of little silver-haired children insisted on running through her mind and her hand unconsciously went to cover her belly. Things were moving so quickly for her.
Intellectually, she knew this had been building for years, but it seemed like someone jumpstarted things recently. The last couple of months, when she'd first been assigned with Kakashi on a few two-man missions, she'd found herself thinking about him more and more. Then word came of this long-term mission that they would be on and her fantasies had blown way up, causing her to even stop and daydream at work. That's also when her dreams at night had started.
And now, just a week after the last one, here she was, daydreaming again. But now she was engaged to be married to him. And contemplating his child. She shook her head and in an effort to distract herself, she picked up Master Jiraiya's book and tried to read.
