Kakashi watched the dancing, saw when Sakura realized he was there. He watched carefully as her eyes darted to the other side of the cave. He looked over and saw the other woman sitting in the corner.
He looked back over to Sakura and waited. “No,” Sakura said, her smile widening. And at that moment, Kakashi slipped through the opening in the ceiling and landed behind him.
“No, I don’t think so, either,” he said.
The nin spun around. “Who? You.”
Kakashi looked over the rogue’s head at Sakura. “Why do they always say that?” He rolled his eye, then moved around next to her. He pulled a kunai out and carefully sliced her ropes.
Sakura chuckled. “Well, you are famous.” She shook her hands out, getting the blood flowing again.
They turned their attention back to the rogue-nin. As Kakahsi handed her the kunai, the nin lunged for him who, of course, dodged it easily, then he twisted and kicked out, landing a hit square in the nin’s chest. Sakura left them to it for a moment and went over to the other woman who was still cowering in the corner. She cut the ropes on her wrists carefully, but she had no chakra to heal her with.
She moved over to the wall of the cave where they came in, glancing over her shoulder at Kakashi. They were still trading punches, both of them struggling with the small space. Sakura took a deep breath, pulled her arm back and sent it into the rock wall.
It wasn’t as good as it would normally have been, but she did make a good-sized crack with the first hit. She pulled it back and threw once more, finally breaking through. She cursed her lack of chakra once more, then threw two more punches, clearing enough space for her and the woman to get out of the cave.
When she was sure the woman was safely out of range, she came back to the cave and climbed back through. She glanced down at herself and was glad that her skirt at least covered her genitals, but the front of her top was completely gone. There was nothing for it, she’d have to fight half-naked.
She ran up to him, pulling her arm back and as Kakashi steered him around, she sent her fist into the nin’s back, pushing him back into Kakashi. He threw another kick, sending the nin back to Sakura who launched the next one at his face. He flew backwards past Kakashi and hit the wall hard, sliding to a heap at the bottom.
Sakura went up to him and squatted in front of him. She grabbed his hair and dragged his head back. “Not going to do what you want anymore,” she said with a ragged breath. “Now, we do what I want.”
Kakashi held a kunai out for her and she looked up at him. She took it from him as he stepped back out of her way. She stared at the nin, the bloody face, the swollen eyes and he tried to sneer at her. She held the knife up to his face and his eyes widened.
She wanted to. For the first time in her life, she wanted to hurt someone. Not just for her, but for the woman outside who was never going to be the same again. She wanted to hurt him for all the women he’d helped to brutalize and for all the women he would, if she let him go.
Sakura stood up, took a half step back, pulled her hand back and released the kunai. It landed right between his legs, less than a centimeter from his balls. As she opened her mouth to speak, she heard the first rumble.
She glanced up and a few rocks started to rain down. “It’s going to go, we have to get out.” Kakashi came up and put a hand on her shoulder.
Sakura stared at the man in front of her. He struggled to get up, then held a hand up for her. But for once in her life, Sakura couldn’t do it. She stepped back and turned toward the entrance. They hurried out through the hole she’d made as the bigger chunks of the rock started to fall.
After they climbed through, Sakura turned around and watched as the nin tried to crawl toward the entrance. She fought with herself to go help him out, her hands clenched in fists. But just as she was about to give in a huge rock crashed down over him and there was no doubt that he was now dead. She winced and spun, Kakashi’s arms coming around her. “We have to go, the whole area is unstable.”
She nodded and they helped the woman up and started down along the river. They made it to the road before too long and crossed the bridge into the border village. Kakashi had taken off his vest and put it over Sakura, but there was nothing they could do about her shorts.
Kakashi found the village headman and they helped the woman get home. Sakura tried to check her over and there was no permanent physical damage, but she was too far out of chakra to help her beyond that. The woman hadn’t spoken at all until then, but when they turned to leave, she stepped up to Sakura. “Thank you.”
Sakura smiled. “You’re welcome.”
Kakashi summoned Pakkun and to Sakura’s surprise, as soon as he appeared, he jumped up to her. “Sakura! I’m glad you’re okay.” And then he did a total dog thing and licked her face. Sakura laughed, picked him up and actually hugged him.
“Thank you, Pakkun.” She scratched him behind the ear.
“You need to go let Tsunade know what’s happened,” Kakashi said and Pakkun licked Sakura once more before she put him down. Kakashi gave him a quick rundown of what went on and told him that they’d be staying in the village overnight.
The headman brought Sakura a long yukata and some undergarments, then they were offered rooms in their inn. “Just one room is fine,” Kakashi said, to Sakura’s surprise.
After getting up to their room, Sakura sat on the bed. As she started to calm down, she started trembling which turned into full-body shaking. Kakashi sat next to her, pulling her into his arms. “W-w-what’s—” but she couldn’t stop it.
“Reaction. You’ll be okay in a bit. Let’s get you cleaned up.” He picked her up and carried her into the bathroom, carefully setting her down on the toilet. He turned the water on and stopped up the tub, then stripped himself and turned to her. She still had her shredded clothes on, so he carefully peeled them away, tossing them aside. “We’ll be burning those.” He lifted her up again, then settled her carefully into the tub with him.
He took a washcloth off of the rack by the tub and wet it, running it gently over her. By the time the tub had filled, she’d started to calm down again. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me.” She looked down at his hands where he was still bathing her off.
“I told you, reaction. It’s normal. Don’t worry about it.” And with that, he pulled her back against him.
She looked up over her shoulder at him and he was watching her, a mix of emotion on his face she couldn’t quite decipher. He leaned down and his lips met hers in the gentlest, most heartbreaking of kisses. Slowly, the kiss grew into something quite a bit more. Sakura felt a small splash as the washcloth was dropped and his bare hands started to move over her skin.
She twisted around and reached up, winding her fingers through his hair, holding him to her. The kiss exploded then and she felt his tongue slide along hers, the promise of more—much more. She moved up against him, straddling him and his hands glided along her skin. They slid up to cup one breast and Sakura gasped in pain.
Kakashi pulled his hand back as if stung. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Just a little bruised.” She took his hand and put it back on her. “Don’t—” She swallowed. “—don’t stop.”
And he pulled her back to him, gently cupping the breast he’d let go of, his lips back on hers. He leaned down and kissed the bruises tenderly. Then, glancing up at her, took the nipple into his mouth. She sucked in a breath and moaned, her hands coming up to cradle his head against her.
He wrapped his arms around her, feasting on her as if he was starving. Perhaps he was, because Kakashi couldn’t get enough of her, couldn’t seem to stop touching her. He’d made a mistake, a huge one in letting her go. He didn’t deserve it, but he hoped beyond hope that he could correct that mistake.
Frustrated by the tub, he pulled back and reached around her, yanking the plug out. He helped her up and stood, then stepped out. He dried her off gently, carefully avoiding the bruises. But just touching her was making him crazy and he pulled her out of the bathroom and laid her back down on the bed.
He followed her down, their lips coming back together, their bodies damned near desperate for each other. He tried to take it slowly, tried, but he needed her and she needed him. She wrapped her legs around him and a moment later, he was inside of her and knew…knew that he never wanted to be anywhere else.
He started moving and she matched him, desperate herself to feel him in her. Needing above anything to give to him, show him just how much he meant to her, how much she loved him.
When it was over, they rolled with him still inside her and she curled into his chest, unable to look at him. If after this, he walked away, she didn’t know what she’d do. She didn’t know how she’d handle it. Didn’t know if she could.
He pulled a blanket over them and tightened his arms around her. He kissed the top of her head and before he knew it, the exhaustion had taken over and they were both asleep.
When Sakura woke the next morning, they hadn’t moved the tiniest bit. They were still tangled, still as close as two human beings could get. She dared to look up at him and he was awake. He didn’t say anything, just started kissing her and they got lost in each other again. He rolled her and entered her, slowly this time, their initial desperation worn out the night before.
Their hands met, fingers threaded and gazes never left each other. Even when her climax crashed into her, she didn’t look away. “Kakashi…” It was more of a breath than a scream, but he could see the intensity, feel it as she shuddered around him with it.
And then it shifted and they needed more, needed the heat. His lips crashed onto hers again, they moved faster and when the orgasm hit her this time, she did scream, though he caught it with his mouth. A moment later, it was too much and he came, too, filling her with his seed.
They lay together quietly, neither willing to speak, to disrupt what they had. She didn’t want to think about what would happen now. They’d made love, yes, but that didn’t necessarily mean anything. It didn’t mean he’d changed his mind.
He sighed. “We should get going. Tsunade is going to want to see you.”
She swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded. “Yeah.”
He tilted her face up to him and she studied his. As usual, his expression was inscrutable, his thoughts guarded. She had no idea what was on her face, but she fought as hard as she could to keep the pain out, shove it aside. If he did walk away anyway, she wanted these last few minutes to hold on to.
He leaned down and kissed her, then sighed again. “Let’s go.”
She nodded, fighting the tears. It was starting to make her mad just how much she was crying these days. They untangled themselves, got up and dressed quickly. They stopped for soup in the teahouse, neither saying anything. Sakura couldn’t think of what to say. She refused to beg him to stay with her, refused to sound like the whiny brat she’d gotten away from and so she said nothing.
Kakashi couldn’t figure out how to start. He wanted—needed—to fix things between them. He needed to see her smile again, knew he needed to be with her. But he had no idea how. The words just weren’t there.
They finished their food and headed back to Konoha, traveling in silence, though he wouldn’t let her out of his sight. They went first to see Tsunade who was, despite her attempts to appear otherwise, very glad to see them. She wanted to yell at Sakura, knock her into next year but she looked rough enough at the moment. And looking at the two of them, Tsunade saw that nothing was resolved yet.
She let them go and they headed down the steps. Sakura paused and stood uncertainly for a moment, then she reached into her pouch. She held his book out to him and he looked down at it in surprise.
“How? Where?”
“You left it. That…night in my office.” She had trouble holding it in. She was going to cry again, she knew it and she didn’t want him to see it. Couldn’t let him.
He took the book and couldn’t have mistaken the tiny water stains along the edges. She’d held it while she cried. He wanted to kick himself again.
All because he thought he was doing the right thing. But was it? Looking at her now as she struggled with emotion because he was leaving, again, he knew.
It couldn’t be. To hell with all of them, his fellow jounin, her hospital co-workers. He didn’t care anymore, couldn’t. It couldn’t be the right thing for them if she was hurting this badly from it. If he was.
“Come on,” he said, taking her hand. “Let’s go home.”
She stared at him, afraid to hope. “Home?”
“For now, anyway. We’ll have to find something bigger before too long. With the pack’s penchant for taking over, there’s not enough room.”
She swallowed hard. “Don’t…don’t play with me, Kakashi,” she said, shaking her head. “I…” And she lost the battle, the tears streaking again.
He pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her. “I can’t. I can’t be without you.” The words were barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, Sakura, but whatever it is, you have to be there.”
She closed her eyes, gripping the front of his vest, burying her face in it. “I love you.” The words were muffled, lost in his vest, but he heard them.
“I love you, Sakura. Come home with me?” he asked and she nodded, her face still buried. She took a deep breath and stepped back a little, looking up at him. And they turned toward home.
