Chapter Twenty Two
--------------flashback------------
“No! I won’t! You can’t make me!”
Naruto flinched at the hate in the little girl’s voice as she screamed, arching her back as she threw her tantrum. “What can’t you make her do?” Kakashi questioned lightly as he entered through the window.
“Teme’s coming over too and she’s upset because I told her that she needed to be polite to him.” Naruto answered.
Kakashi nodded a little before squatting next to the little girl. “Ah, so that’s what’s got the Princess upset.” Kakashi said with a small twinkle in his eye before looking at Naruto. “Mind if I take her for an hour?”
“Go ahead.”
“Come on, Princess. Let’s go throw some kunai at a dummy.” Kakashi said as he scooped the little girl up into his arms.
Mahina wrapped her arms around Kakashi’s neck and buried her face in between her arm and the crook of his neck. Naruto gently rubbed daughter’s back before allowing Kakashi to take off with the little girl.
“I hate him.” Mahina said stubbornly as she sat on the swings.
“Who?”
“Sasuke. He was mean to me and no one cares.” Angry tears gathered in her eyes. “He let Orochimaru hurt me and didn’t stop him when he was hurting other people. He didn’t even stop Kabuto!”
Kakashi sat down on the swing next to the little girl and swung lightly next to her. “Hi-Hi, there are two sides to one story.” Kakashi told her.
“I’m not lying!”
“I didn’t say that you were. I’m just saying that everybody has their own story that others don’t know.” Kakashi said before standing up. “Come on. I want to show you something.”
Sniffling, the little girl slowly slipped off of the swing and wrapped her fingers around Kakashi’s fingers. Her eyes widened when they came to a compound that had a familiar red and white fan everywhere. “This is where Sasuke lived for the first thirteen years of his life.” Kakashi told her as he led her through the abandoned streets. “When he was a child, his older brother killed their entire family. His brother, Itachi, forced Sasuke to watch the whole event.”
Itachi? No, Itachi was nice to her! He let her go. When the little girl made her argument for Itachi, Kakashi smiled softly. “Yes, but please listen to the rest of Sasuke’s story.” Kakashi looked thoughtful for a moment. “Until the day he left, he felt all alone and felt like no one wanted to catch Itachi and make him sorry for what he had done. He allowed that anger and sense of loneliness turn into hate. That hate, Mahina, ultimately resulted in him accepting Orochimaru’s offer and abandoning the village.”
Mahina fell silent, her heart growing heavy. “He thought if he did what Orochimaru wanted, then he wouldn’t feel lonely?” Mahina questioned.
“I think so.”
“Then why did he hurt me? I didn’t do anything.”
“I know that, and he does too.” Kakashi brushed the little girl’s hair out of her eyes. “You know that you could pass off as Naruto’s real daughter. I think that when Sasuke first saw you, he was reminded of his best friend and he became lonely and angry all over again.”
Mahina bowed her head slightly, tears gathering in her eyes. She hadn’t thought that maybe Sasuke had really been hurting and had actually been friends with her father. It wasn’t until after she came to Konoha that she even discovered that her aunts and uncles had even known Sasuke. She hadn’t known that her father had been friends with him and that Auntie Sakura had even had a crush on him. “I’m still scared of him though. I don’t know why Daddy wants me to be near Sasuke when he scares me.” Mahina answered slowly.
“Because he knows that you’re still hurting.”
“Grandma knows too?”
Kakashi nodded slightly, not wanting to let the little girl know that her mental state was constantly being observed. Her time with Ibiki was merely evaluation sessions and so far, the only thing being discovered was that she was still scared but steadily getting over everything that had happened. Peace was being made with the opposite sex but they wouldn’t know if peace was being made with the idea of sex until she was older. “Yes, Grandma knows.” Kakashi told her. “I remember that even Aunt Shizune told you a story about a kunoichi that got hurt like you did.”
“Yeah. She was scared after because she thought that someone was going to do it to her again but she faced her fear and didn’t let it turn to hate.”
“Uh huh. What happened afterwards?”
“Umm… the lady that got hurt later found someone that cared about her and made her feel better so no one could make her feel scared again.”
Kakashi smiled again as he started walking with the little girl back towards the apartment. “So how about it? Do you want to give Sasuke a second chance?” Kakashi questioned.
“I don’t know if he’s sorry.”
“If you look in his eyes, Hi-Hi, you’ll see that he probably is.” Kakashi answered. “Even if he’s not, you can act like a grownup and forgive him.”
“I don’t want to.”
“I know, but that’s the mistake that Sasuke made with his brother. While Itachi did do something bad, Sasuke couldn’t act like a grownup and move on. If you don’t forgive Sasuke, then you might make the same mistake that he did.”
Mahina didn’t say anything for a moment before slowly nodding. “I’ll try.” Mahina said softly. “Does that mean that I have to forget?”
“Forgive and forget.”
“Forgetting’s hard.”
“I know. Forgiving is pretty hard too.”
When they got back to the apartment, they noticed that Sasuke was already there and talking to Naruto. “Sai and Sakura here yet?” Kakashi questioned lightly as the little girl darted over to her father to give him a hug.
“No, but they should be here in a few minutes. Hey, Hi-Hi. Did you and Uncle Kakashi have a good talk?” Naruto questioned with a bright smile.
“Uh huh. I decided something too cause Uncle Kakashi says that I can act like a grownup.”
“How?”
“Forgiving and forgetting.” Turning, she stared at Sasuke. Slowly, as if she were fighting against her own fears, the little girl moved towards Sasuke.
“Don’t you dare.” Sauske said with a warning tone.
Mahina frowned before wrapping her arms around Sasuke’s torso. “You’re not going to be my uncle,” she said when she quickly pulled away, “but you are Daddy’s friend. While I don’t want to give you a second chance, I’m going to act like a grownup and give you one.”
Smiling brightly at him, she skipped out of the room and to her bedroom to change clothes. Before she vanished from sight, she smiled when she saw the surprised look on the Uchiha’s face. He hadn’t expected her to be forgiving and she couldn’t help but feel like she had won some important fight that had been going on.
--------end flashback------------
“You do realize that it’s impolite to show up at one’s house when it’s so late at night.”
Mahina looked at Sasuke, seeing the irritated look on his face. “You told Dad what I can do with demons, but you changed the story to make it seem like Orochimaru was trying to acquire a demon’s lifespan. Why didn’t you tell him the whole truth about how it happened?” Mahina said with a small frown.
Sasuke looked at the little girl, seeing that she was wearing a dark blue shirt and white pants. “Did you want me to?” Sasuke questioned.
“No.”
“Then why are you complaining?”
“I want to know. Why didn’t you tell Dad that I can do it with humans too?”
“Because there was no reason for him to know. Demons are all over in the outside world and hide from humans. If you were to ever become injured to the point that life or limb loss would have been inevitable, you could simply call and pull from a demon.”
Mahina frowned slightly as she eyed him warily. She remembered very clearly the discussion she had with Kakashi about forgiving and forgetting. While she forgave Sasuke, she couldn’t forgive anybody else that had hurt her. “Dad says that the man that attacked me in the hospital was working for Kabuto.” Mahina said as if she were talking about the weather.
“That’s what he says.”
“Why did he come after me then? Orochimaru’s dead and the only one that knows how to use that resurrection technique has turned into a mummy in the desert.”
“You remember that experiment they did a while back? Took some of your DNA and put it into another kid?”
“He died.”
“Yes, but you pulled what energy he had acquired into yourself the moment he died.”
Sasuke looked up at the stars for a moment before answering, “He had cellular damage in life. The moment that your DNA was introduced, his cells rejuvenated. I assume that Kabuto wants to try it on corpses so he can resurrect Orochimaru.”
Mahina closed her eyes for a moment before answering, “I can turn my feelings off, Sasuke.”
“I know that. I was there when you started doing it.”
“If I see Kabuto, I’ll kill him. I forgave you, remember? I didn’t ever forgive Kabuto.”
“I know.”
The ten year old smiled softly before starting to walk away before pausing for a moment. “I’m in Team 7, Sasuke.” Mahina said softly. “Dad’s pretty proud of me. He says that’s the team that everybody in his family’s been in so far.”
“I heard.”
“I made peace with what happened and Ibiki just told both my father and Grandma that I could probably take missions that deal with seducing people when I’m older.” Mahina paused for a moment before smiling at him. “I should go home now. The two idiots I’m stuck with want to make a good impression on our new teacher.”
Smiling, Sasuke nodded. “Good luck with that.” Sasuke chuckled.
Grinning a little at him, the little girl vanished in a flurry of leaves. Shaking his head as he returned to his own house, the Uchiha could easily tell who had taught the little girl such a trick. Oh well, whatever put her chakra levels down at a normal child’s levels, he supposed.
Glancing up at where the moon was supposed to be, the Uchiha found himself wondering if the little girl hadn’t somehow managed to deceive them regarding her mental stability.
Deciding that he’d simply watch just incase, the Uchiha retreated to the privacy of his own home.
