A/N: So, I’ve been
having real-life stuff taking up my time.
I apologize for this update being almost a week from the last one. This story is really winding down for me. I hope that it doesn’t disappoint. There’s still another Sasuke & Gaara
chapter before an epilogue. On the plus
side, my husband will be gone for 10 days in Texas, so provided I don’t blow up
from being alone with my kids for that many days, I should get a lot more
writing done.

Nejislady: Thank you for reassuring me that Gaara and Sasuke
are being adorable, that’s what I’ve been going for.
Chapter 22 – Trouble
in Paradise
Sasuke smiled as he followed Gaara to the kitchen. “You went out and got ice cream for us?”
Gaara nodded. “I liked it so much when I
was at your place. I just couldn’t help
myself.” He smirked at Sasuke. “And it makes my father furious, and since
you said to tell him off, I thought I could at least have something he dislikes
in the house.”
Sasuke shook his head.
“I haven’t seen your father except for the few moments I was in his
office. Does he avoid you like this all
the time?”
Gaara nodded again.
“I don’t mind it so much. I would
rather have him ignore me than for me to have to be the monster he wanted me to
be.”
Sasuke frowned. He
was so angry with the Kazekage for treating Gaara like a monster. If he had shown the boy one ounce of
compassion as a child, he would have turned out like this earlier, and probably
been a much better person for it.
Instead, Gaara had to know the true horrors of the world. Horrors that even he wasn’t forced to face on
a normal day. Sasuke grabbed the back of
Gaara’s shirt carefully. “Gaara, look at
me.”
Gaara turned around to face Sasuke, “Yes?”
Sasuke moved forward, and Gaara let him. Sasuke took a deep breath as he closed the
gap between them and pressed their bodies together. Sasuke could feel the sand pull away where
his skin touched Gaara’s. He leaned down
to capture Gaara’s lips softly. Sasuke’s
hands reached into Gaara’s hair and entwined with the strands. Gaara opened his mouth and gently guided
Sasuke’s tongue to join his. Gaara
moaned softly at the gentle prodding and caressing Sasuke’s tongue was doing to
his. Sasuke pulled away slowly, letting
his hands come to rest on Gaara’s shoulders.
Looking directly into Gaara’s eyes, Sasuke smiled a real smile. “I love you.”
Gaara felt tears run down his cheeks. He was confused. “I’m not sad you said that Sasuke. Why am I crying?”
Sasuke smiled and wiped the tears away. “Sometimes you cry when you’re happy,
too. I don’t know why that is. I wish I could explain it for you.”
Gaara buried his face in Sasuke’s chest, doing his best to
calm himself. He looked up at Sasuke
when he felt Sasuke’s hands calmly stroking down his head. “I-I don’t know what love is, for certain,
but I think it’s what I feel towards you, Sasuke.”
Sasuke closed his eyes and smiled. He wrapped his arms around Gaara’s shoulders
and just relaxed for the first time in a long time. He wasn’t sure how long they stood there, but
he felt Gaara pulling away from him as they heard a voice clearing. Gaara dropped his head and looked at the
floor when he saw his father watching them.
“Weren’t you supposed to head back to Konoha?”
“I was planning on leaving tomorrow morning, sir. I wanted to take this time to visit my
friends,” Sasuke said without emotion.
Gaara’s father smirked.
“Seems like you’re more than friends.”
Gaara growled. I want to rip him apart for you. Gaara answered the request in his mind with a
quick shake of the head. “What does it
matter to you if we are?”
Gaara’s father snarled at his son. “You are not worthy of being loved by
anyone. And anyone who could love you
obviously has psychological problems.”
Sasuke wouldn’t let this go on. He grabbed Gaara’s hand and yanked him toward
the bedroom they had just vacated. As he
shut the door behind him, he pulled Gaara close again. He could feel the boy shaking with rage. Sasuke sighed and held him tighter. “He’s not worth it, Gaara. Whatever you’re thinking. Someday you’ll be the Kazekage, and people
will all love and respect you. For now,
just let him do what he wants. I’ll
always be here for you.”
Gaara shook his head.
“You won’t always be here for me.
You live in Konoha.”
Sasuke bit his lip.
“You could move in with me in Konoha.”
Gaara frowned. “I
want to, but my father would never give me permission to move. He’d never give me permission to be happy.”
Sasuke forced his tears to stay back. “I’m sorry, Gaara.”
Sasuke and Gaara both jumped when someone knocked on his
door. They had been too invested in each
other to notice Kankuro approaching.
“Come in,” Gaara said quietly. He
didn’t bother to let go of Sasuke. He
knew Kankuro knew about them anyway.
Kankuro smiled sadly when he saw Sasuke holding Gaara so
close. “Sasuke, you should leave
now. My father is promising to harm
Gaara if you don’t leave now. Don’t
worry; Temari and I will keep them apart.
We won’t let anything happen to Gaara.”
Gaara smirked. “So you do like me?” Kankuro rolled his eyes and motioned Sasuke
to hurry. Gaara sighed and kissed Sasuke
one last time. “Call me when you get
back. I want to know you made it
safely.”
Sasuke nodded and squeezed Gaara’s hand before he grabbed his pack and followed
Kankuro. Temari was standing outside
Gaara’s door. Kankuro nodded to her. “Temari will make sure you get on your way
safely, and I’ll stand here and make sure Gaara is left alone.” Sasuke nodded again, but couldn’t say
anything around the lump in his throat.
He waved to Kankuro as he and Temari started out toward the gates.
Sasuke frowned when he turned toward Temari at the
gates. “If he gets really bad, you know
what I mean, call me right away, please.”
Temari nodded. “I’m
sorry for my father, Sasuke.”
Sasuke nodded and shrugged.
“It isn’t as if I’m not used to it.”
He turned and ran toward Konoha, not stopping for more than 20 minute
naps the entire way. He just needed to
get home to Naruto and have someone tell him it was going to be all right. He gasped at the sight that greeted him.
***********************
Shikamaru laughed when Neji threw a dinner roll at him. “I’m not that late, and I called to tell you
I would be.”
Neji smiled. “I know,
but I spent all day making us this little romantic dinner, and then you called
to say you’d be late. It broke my
heart.” He chuckled. “Seriously though, you’re going out on a
fairly dangerous mission tomorrow, and I’d like to have a nice night if
something happens.”
Shikamaru frowned.
After Sasuke had left an urgent mission had come through the ranks from
the daimyo. He feared for his life and
wanted a guard to accompany him from Konoha, where he had been staying back to
his castle. Tsunade had assigned
Shikamaru, Shino, Kiba, and Asuma to go.
Neji had offered to go, but Tsunade said she wanted to keep him in the
village so he could finish training with his uncle. She didn’t think the mission would be too
dangerous.
Shikamaru pulled Neji into his lap as he sat down at the
table. “Thank you for going to the
trouble of making this meal, but I don’t think anything is going to
happen.” He kissed behind Neji’s ear
tenderly.
Neji smiled. “I know,
but I’d rather have a nice last memory just in case than one of us sitting on
our asses and watching television.”
Shikamaru chuckled.
“Since when have we just sat on our asses watching television?” He let Neji up and smirked as his husband
took his place on the side of the table opposite Shikamaru. “What’s the reason you’re sitting so far away
from me, Nej.”
Neji smirked.
“Because if I’m not at least this far away your libido rubs off on me
and we end up fucking before we get to the food. I want to eat first tonight.”
Shikamaru smiled and nodded.
“All right, give me food then.”
Neji shook his head before handing the plate he had just
been dishing from to Shikamaru. After
they finished their meal, Neji pulled Shikamaru to the bathroom. “I made up a bath for us.”
Shikamaru smirked as he pulled Neji’s shirt off. “I love when you have surprises waiting for
me.”
They finished undressing each other and Shikamaru settled
back in the bath and made room for Neji between his legs. He wrapped his arms around Neji’s waist and
rested his chin on Neji’s shoulder for a while.
He closed his eyes and whispered to Neji, “Want to go to bed?”
Neji nodded and kissed Shikamaru softly. “I want you to make love to me.”
Shikamaru smiled and pulled Neji up. “I think I can muster up the desire for
something like that.” He laughed as he
wrapped a towel around Neji’s waist.
They spent the next hour making love before Shikamaru fell
asleep from exhaustion. Neji
frowned. He had gotten a bad feeling
that morning. It was like he just knew
this would be his last night with Shikamaru.
He couldn’t shake the feeling and was having difficulty falling
asleep. He ran his fingers through his
husband’s silky hair, smiling sadly. He
loved Shikamaru with all his heart. He
would pray that his premonition of bad things ahead was wrong.
*********************
Shikamaru spun as quickly as he could to get away from the
enemy. Tsunade had been wrong. The people trying to kill the daimyo were
very strong and his team was currently outnumbered. Shino and Kiba were fighting off
approximately a dozen ninja while he and Asuma were dealing with nearly
18. When the enemy heard the daimyo had
gone to Tsunade, they had more than tripled the number of ninja initially sent
to finish the job. These were all jounin
level ninja. Asuma was the only one on
the team truly trained to take them on.
Shikamaru realized the enemy’s plan with only time enough to
either deflect the blow himself or let his teammates be destroyed. He moved without thinking, rounding up the
three of his teammates and taking two combined blasts from his enemies’
attacks. He crumpled to the ground at
Asuma’s feet.
Seeing someone he thought of as family fall at his feet made
Asuma angry. He honed his chakra even
further and began to fight even more fiercely.
The same was true for Shino and Kiba.
Shikamaru had put his life on the line for them. The least they could do was make sure the
battle was won.
Fifteen minutes later, the three remaining Konoha ninjas
ended the battle, looking worse for the wear.
Asuma made the decision he knew Shikamaru would have wanted him to
make. He picked up Shikamaru and carried
him as they headed for the daimyo’s castle.
It wasn’t much further. They
would be there in a matter of a few hours.
They would all ready have been there if the daimyo hadn’t required so
many fucking stops. For a man fearing
for his life, he didn’t seem like he was in much of a rush to get home.
After seeing the daimyo through his gate, the team rushed back
to Konoha. They made it back by
midday. Neji was waiting at the gates
for Shikamaru. He’d gotten nervous when
the team hadn’t made it back on time, and he’d had that nagging feeling. When he saw Shikamaru’s torn, bleeding body
he broke down. Neji screamed at the sky
and no one in particular. Asuma sent
Shino for Tsunade. He laid Shikamaru’s
body down in the grass before turning to Neji.
“He’s still breathing, but it doesn’t look good. We finished the mission instead of coming
straight home. You know he would have
wanted it that way.”
Neji had tears streaming down his cheeks and he was
hysterical, but he knew Asuma was right.
Shikamaru would have wanted the mission finished whether or not it cost
him his life. Tsunade showed up almost
immediately and checked Shikamaru’s stats.
“He needs to get to the hospital immediately.” She turned to Kiba. “Get Naruto and tell him that Neji is going
to be in need of a friend. Explain the
situation to him.”
Heads turned as Sasuke’s cry of anguish broke through the
air. Asuma headed to the hospital with
Shikamaru without looking back the obviously upset man. Sasuke turned to toward Tsunade. “What happened?”
Tsunade shook her head. “They were
ambushed while completing an escort mission.”
Neji cried harder. Sasuke swallowed his
own misery at the sight of Shikamaru’s near lifeless body, and moved to
Neji. He wrapped his arms around Neji’s
shoulders and let the man cry out all his worry. When Sasuke looked up again, Naruto was
standing behind them. Sasuke whispered
to Nej, “You need to be strong for him.
He’s not gone yet, and you know he wouldn’t want you sitting here in
tears. He would want you to continue on
with your life.”
Neji nodded. Naruto
smiled sadly at Sasuke before helping Neji stand up. “Would you like to go wait at the hospital or
at our apartment?”
Neji shrugged and followed along, completely drained of all
emotional capability. Naruto took him to
the hospital. While it wouldn’t make the
wait any easier, he thought Neji would want to be as close as possible when
there was any news on Shikamaru’s condition.
Once they had Neji settled in a waiting room, Naruto pulled Sasuke to
the side. “Are you all right?”
Sasuke shook his head. “I love
Gaara. His father wanted to kill me for
loving him. I loved Shikamaru, but blew
that through stupidity. Now I feel
guilty for loving Gaara while Shikamaru is probably going to die. I know it’s supposed to be Neji’s pain, but
it feels like I still love Shikamaru, even if I do realize that he’s just a
friend now. I don’t know how else to
explain that.”
Naruto nodded. “I
understand. There’s nothing we can do
other than pray that Shikamaru recovers.”
Sasuke sniffled but nodded. Naruto
smirked. “You love Gaara?”
Sasuke nodded. “I
told him so while I was visiting him.
However, his father made it known to me that I wasn’t welcome in Suna
and especially not welcome to have a romantic interest in his son.”
Naruto growled. “I hope that bastard
gets destroyed. Anyone would make a
better Kazekage.”
Sasuke nodded again.
He looked toward Neji. “Do you
think he’s going to be all right?”
Naruto shrugged. “I think
it’ll depend on what happens with Shikamaru.
In the end I’m sure he’ll be fine, but if Shika doesn’t make it he’ll
probably have a really rough patch. If
Shika doesn’t make it, we’re going to have to be there for a lot of
people. His parents, Neji, and Asuma are
going to take it hardest.”
Sasuke frowned and stared at his hands. “Can I ask you about Gaara?”
Naruto looked at Neji who still seemed almost
catatonic. “Yeah, sure,” he answered as
he turned back to Sasuke. He hated
seeing Neji like this. It reminded him
too much of before they became friends.
Sasuke sighed. “If
his father is so against us, will Gaara be willing to take the chance on us?”
Naruto laughed softly.
“He may do it simply because his father is against it. Sasuke, he opened up to you. He stayed home with you when he was looking
forward to seeing the fireworks with us.
He likes you, Sasuke. He will
make it work to be with you, whatever has to happen.”
Sasuke and Naruto looked up as Neji started crying
again. The sat on either side of him and
hugged him tightly. Neji was relying on their
strength right now. The look on Tsunade’s
face when she emerged from the operating room gave no indication to anything
other than that she was worn-out from the surgery.
Neji looked up at her face and she frowned and shook her
head. Neji broke down. “Oh, God.
I can’t believe he’s gone.”
Tsunade shook her head again. “You miss
understand, Neji. He will make it, but
he’ll never be able to do anything relating to an actual assignment again. He’s taken too much damage directly to his
chakra system.”
Neji took a deep breath and nodded. “May I see him?”
Tsunade nodded and pulled Neji through a few doors until they arrived at
Shikamaru’s room. “He’s still in
critical condition, so he’ll need his rest more than anything. You have about 10 minutes before I have to
kick you out.”
Neji nodded. “Thank you, Tsunade-sama.” He entered Shikamaru’s room and saw his
husband covered from head to toe in bandages.
He sat down in the chair beside the bed.
“What did you do, Shika?” Neji
carded his fingers through Shikamaru’s hair.
“You can’t be a ninja anymore…I think Tsunade wants to keep your mind in
her service though.”
Tears came to his eyes as he smiled in relief as Shikamaru’s
eyes fluttered open. He couldn’t speak,
but he did squeeze Neji’s hand. The only
thought going through Shikamaru’s head was that he didn’t care if he couldn’t
be a ninja so long as he could still be with Neji. He hadn’t been ready to die, and he was
certain that had helped him make it back to Neji. He closed his eyes again and focused on
feeling Neji’s hand until Neji had to leave and his lips came in contact with
Shikamaru’s eyelids. “I’ll see you
tomorrow, Love,” Neji whispered before making his way out the door.
