Sasuke reappeared at Ino's front door. He knocked politely, but was so focused on getting a meal and getting back to Naruto, that he didn't notice a deeper shadow watching from just across the street.
Shikamaru had almost walked right around the corner and into the middle of the street, but for the fact that Sasuke's presence had manifested milliseconds before he turned the edge of the building. The normally lazy boy had jumped back and pressed against the wall peering suspiciously around the corner. He'd started habitually walking past Ino's house late at night a long time ago for reasons he wasn't entirely sure of himself, but this was the first time he'd caught Sasuke there. It made him uneasy and then hair on the back of his neck and arms stood straight up. Something wasn't right... and he decided to find out why he was feeling that way. He didn't even stop to think it was odd... for him anyway. ::What's that bastard doing?::
“Sasuke!” Ino greeted brightly as she answered the door. “What can I do for you?” She foolishly still held onto the hope that with time she could win Sasuke, even after he'd disappeared for a month only to return with a wounded Naruto. The whole village knew by this point at least that Naruto had been abducted by Itachi and rescued by Sasuke. But still she refused to believe what Sakura had told her over a month ago... it would mean the end of a lifelong dream and she wasn't ready to give it up.
“Can we go for a walk?” It was his usual line for a blood request. He was rarely turned down by Ino, but at least any civilians that might pass by who didn't know about Sasuke wouldn't become suspicious.
Shikamaru's eyes narrowed. :: Don't be an idiot, Ino. You know he's dangerous now. Tell him you've got a mission in the morning...:: he shifted his weight... and tried to unclench his teeth.
“Of course.” Ino gave him a smile and fell in step beside him after locking the door behind her. “It's so wonderful to have you back, Sasuke-kun. I've missed you.”
“It's good to be home...” he said softly. They were headed to the training fields. Ino's parents still didn't know that Ino was one of the now many - though Sasuke didn't yet know it - that were keeping Sasuke's Blood Lust sated.
Shikamaru followed stealthily. He really didn't like this... or the way it made him want to put Sasuke through a couple walls for no apparent reason.
That made Ino smile brightly, thinking that he meant it was good to be with her again. Her smile turned into a pout as she asked, “Why were you gone so long?”
“It wasn't easy finding Naruto... my bastard of a brother teleported often enough that even a nin-dog would have taken that long or longer to find him...” he answered as they reached the practice fields. He turned to Ino and waited. She had to come to him... like always.
Ino's heart sank a bit at the mention of Naruto, but she didn't let it show as she stepped closer to him and turned her head to reveal her neck. “You must be hungry after so much time away.”
Shikamaru's gut clenched. What was she doing?! Was she crazy putting her life into the hands of a selfish, no-account, asshole like Sasuke?! Shikamaru couldn't help the way his hand gripped the branch above him on the tree he sat in. He couldn't explain why, but he really wanted to knock Sasuke's head off. His eyes narrowed as he watched Sasuke's fangs sink into Ino's neck without so much as a word in her direction even after her comment.
Sasuke pulled away not long after he had bitten her. He really didn't want to take too much. Just enough to do for now. He lapped at the wounds and then put her away from him as he straightened. “Thank you…”
“Anything for you, Sasuke-kun,” she purred, as she always did after letting him feed from her. “I'll see you again soon, ne?”
“Perhaps...” he nodded and steadied her to walk her home still completely unaware of their silent and brooding audience. He left her at her door and made sure she was in before leaving. His mind was almost entirely on getting back to Naruto.
Feeling unexplainably peeved, Shikamaru turned and left after making sure Ino had gotten into her house safely and that Sasuke had left. He wasn't sure what exactly to think and needed some time to sort out his feelings over the incident and everything it might entail. He headed home his brow furrowed and his expression pensive.
Sasuke re-entered Naruto's hospital room on silent feet, not sure whether he would find the fox-boy asleep for real or not.
Naruto was asleep, but it was restless sleep. His fingers were twitching and his face clearly showed signs of distress.
He paused for only a moment in the doorway and then stepped forward quickly, using a quick pulse of Telekinesis to shut the door quietly. His hands caught Naruto's up gently and he knelt so that he was eye level with Naruto again. “Naruto...” he demanded hoping to wake the fox-boy up.
Naruto's hand tightened around Sasuke's and instantly his face relaxed. A quiet sigh escaped him as he finally fell into a restful sleep, at peace now that Sasuke was nearby.
For a moment, he was silent. He had noticed before that Naruto was only quiet when Sasuke was around while he slept. Otherwise he tossed, turned, and groped for something that wasn't in his reach. It might just be coincidence or a lonely heart looking for someone to latch onto, Sasuke tried to tell himself. Now that Naruto was asleep soundly he would go to his own bed and relax. Sasuke made to stand up and extract his hands from Naruto's, but he didn't get very far. Naruto's hand shot out to grab his again, tighter this time, and the sleeping boy pulled him closer.
Exasperated a little, Sasuke tried to extract his hand from Naruto's again, but he wasn't fairing well at it. Naruto kept grabbing the other one. Finally fed up with trying to get away (not that he was putting forth a whole lot of effort anyway) Sasuke stared at the hand he now willingly held whose fingers laced with his and sighed. Fine... if Naruto was going to be stubborn... He'd get his rest otherwise. He wasn't sure how Naruto would feel waking up with Sasuke - who for all intents and purposes appeared to be dead - laying beside him, but time would tell. Naruto seemed to want him there.
---------The next morning--------
Naruto woke up to the panicked gasps of one of the nurses. Opening his eyes to growl at her and tell her to go hyperventilate somewhere else (he was tired, dammit!) he rolled over a bit... and yelped. Sasuke was lying next to him, and he wasn't in good shape. Every bit of the vampire that the sunlight - streaming through the window the nurse had just pulled the curtains off of - was badly burned and getting worse by the second. Fortunately Jiraiya walked in right then to check on Naruto.
Seeing Sasuke he flew to the window and yanked the heavy curtains closed. He gave the nurse a scary look. “Go get Tsunade. Now!” he barked when the girl failed to move immediately. Satisfied she would do as told he turned back to the boys on the bed and winced. Those burns looked nasty.
“What happened?! Sasuke!” Naruto grabbed a patch of skin that hadn't been damaged and began to shake, trying to wake him up. “Sasuke! Oi, Sasuke!!”
“He's not going to wake up, Naruto,” Jiraiya stated.
“But we have to do something about this!!” Naruto yelled at him. “He just started burning out of nowhere!!”
The old man sighed. “That's why I sent for Tsunade. And he got burned because he's a vampire and young vampires are incredibly sensitive to sunlight.”
Tsunade threw the door open and stormed in, upset that the nurse had done something stupid that had pulled her away from her usual morning nap. “What - OH!” she stopped – stunned for a moment and then moved forward more slowly the anger dissipating. “That has to hurt... is he unconscious or Resting?”
“Resting,” Jiraiya said. “At least I think so. He was like that when I walked in.”
“I just woke up...” Naruto said absentmindedly, still trying to shake Sasuke awake.
Tsunade sighed and leaned over Sasuke gently pushing Naruto away a little. “Let me look...” she murmured and picked up one of Sasuke's arms. A bright red and blistered line where the sun had hit his skin striped across his forearm just below the elbow. “These are third degree burns.... He has a high healing rate, much faster than even Naruto's... why isn't this healing?”
“Wasn't there something in that manuscript of yours that said vampires are truly dead when they Rest?” Jiraiya asked, trying to remember exactly what the book had said.
“Yes! That's exactly what it said... Are you saying the reason he isn't healing is because he's... clinically dead and everything's shut down?” she murmured thoughtfully in response. There was no reason to get frantic... not yet. Sasuke didn't seem to be in pain yet, or suffering a fatal injury. The burns were only where the sun had hit skin directly, so the damage was limited to his left cheek, left arm and left lower leg.
“That would be my best guess, but you're the healer,” Jiraiya said with a shrug.
“Wait a minute! Whaddya mean he's dead?!” Naruto demanded, beginning to feel a bit of the panic he had last night when Sasuke had left to feed. “He was fine last night!”
Tsunade thought a little longer, examining Sasuke closely and then sighed, turning her attention to Naruto. “He's dead to begin with, gaki. You knew that already, didn't you?” she honestly didn't know how to explain it any other way. She didn't fully understand it herself.
“Yeah... but...” Naruto's eyes turned into slits in his confusion.
“Naruto,” Jiraiya tried to explain. “Sasuke's an undead. That means he's alive while awake and dead while asleep, so far as I can figure. Once he wakes up he should be able to heal himself quickly.”
Tsunade nodded. “That's the best we can figure,” she agreed and then looked back to Sasuke. “So ... if we wake him up he'll start to heal... plus it would be advantageous to see just how sluggish he is during the day while awake... any knowledge is just that much more power...”
Very much liking the idea of waking Sasuke up, Naruto began to shake him even harder and yell in his ear… loudly. “WAKE UP!!!”
Tsunade sweat dropped looking as though she were ready to pass out for Naruto's sheer stupidity when she caught the faintest flicker of life from Sasuke. She had begun to straighten out and look a second time to make sure, but apparently that was the only warning she was going to get.
Sasuke was sitting up slowly all of a sudden and swinging his legs out of the bed. His movements were sluggish as if he weren't quite fully awake and he had yet to open his eyes. It was a little like watching a corpse sit up.
“Heeeellllllloooooooooooo... Anyone in there? Oi, Sauske!” Naruto waved a hand in front of Sasuke's face and tugged at his hair. Anything to get him fully awake.
Groaning at Naruto's idiocy Jiraiya pinched the bridge of his nose. And tried very hard not to laugh at the fox-boy's efforts.
Sasuke moved before anyone really had the chance to register that he'd gone from slow as a snail to lightning fast. Lunging he made a dive for Tsunade's throat even as his hands reached toward her to catch and hold his prey. His eyes were open and Tsunade actually shuddered as her gaze met and held the blood-drenched irises.
“Sharingan!” she gasped even as she tried to get out of the way. It was all happening to fast and yet so slowly.
Before even Jiraiya could react Naruto dove on top of Sasuke's back, grabbing his shoulders in a bruising grip and biting down on Sasuke's neck. He didn't even realize he'd done it at first as it had been an instinctual reaction - Kyuubi's instincts. Any creature would freeze if its throat was in serious danger, and that's what the fox-demon had been aiming for when he'd forced Naruto to leap forward.
Sasuke hit his knees immediately despite the fact that everyone in the room well knew he could have killed Naruto in the blink of an eye. The bloody color drained from his eyes, fading like the burns were slowly fading on his body. He was panting heavily, but he was awake now, if a little groggy. The wince he gave when he shifted and pulled at burned skin told them that. Naruto's teeth on his neck was both suppressive and... arousing, making him squirm a little, but he stayed where he was. “What...?” he muttered his voice weak and breathy.
Tsunade stared down at the boys in front of her with hazel eyes so wide they looked almost honey-colored instead as the light from the bulbs above them caught in her irises. Sasuke would have killed her... had Naruto not jumped in to save her. She couldn't speak for the moment.
Coming to his senses with a snap Naruto let go of Sasuke and scooted back quickly. “What... just... happened?”
“That's what I'd like to know...” Jiraiya muttered. “But I know one thing - we're all definitely a lot more awake.”
Tsunade nodded and found her voice, thankful that it didn't shake. “Sasuke... wasn't the one doing the snapping... it was the blood lust... ne, Sasuke?”
The Uchiha looked up slowly at her from his slumped position on the floor and thought back. He vaguely remembered everything, but it was foggy as though the memory was centuries old and clouded. “Hai.... I felt the hunger, but it drowns me out easily during the day... I'm burned... what happened?” his words were slow and carefully thought out, which meant his limited attention was not on his balance. He had to sit back to look at Tsunade and so he began to tip that way. He went a little too much though, unable to counter himself properly when his body wouldn't hardly listen anyway.
“An idiot nurse opened the curtains. Guess she hadn't been told that that's not a smart thing to do with you in the room,” Jiraiya explained, holding back a chuckle at the adorably worried look on Naruto's face as he easily caught Sasuke. ::Well, Naruto's certainly feeling better. He doesn't look as tired as he did yesterday.::
It took several minutes for Sasuke to process that and then he nodded a little. “Oh...” he said glibly and then let his eyes drift up to Naruto's face above him. The back of his head was resting against Naruto's midsection due to the distance that they had been sitting apart when he'd lost his balance. His sleep-relaxed face asked so clearly, ‘How did I end up here like this?’
Tsunade finally let out a small chuckle at that and looked up to Jiraiya with a smile. She took pride in Naruto... He'd wormed his way into her heart from the very beginning and she knew he'd done the same to most others as well. Jiraiya included and Sasuke... even before the two of them.
Convinced now that Sasuke was just fine Naruto shoved him off his lap and bonked him. “Is there a brain in there or not?” he wondered out loud teasingly. “You look like you're drunk...”
Jiraiya just looked knowingly at Tsunade and smirked. Yep, Naruto was definitely feeling better. Especially about his relationship with Sasuke.
Sasuke caught himself a little better this time. He was slowly gaining more control over himself. It was just taking awhile for his motor abilities to revive so that he could at least function properly if not well. He managed a small scowl at Naruto and swatted at him slightly. He could still feel those strong, warm and slightly most teeth on his neck and it was something his mind, the more awake it became, decided it didn't want to let go of just yet. “I’m not all here... yet... no...” he admitted and tried to stand. “I need...” he began but tottered dangerously half way up.
Sighing and feeling a bit like a nanny Naruto got up and pushed Sasuke down to sit on one of the beds. “Be right back.” Figuring that Sasuke was hungry after his healing - Naruto always was ravenous after having to heal some major wound - he went in search of a doctor or nurse who would give him a couple blood bags. He didn't even notice the growing puddle of IV fluids on the floor (When he'd pounced he'd pulled the catheter out of his hand. He had yet to notice that too).
Jiraiya did notice the puddle and sweat dropped. “We need a mop...”
Sasuke sat there, groggily staring fixedly at his healing skin. The hunger was making itself known more and more... and he wasn't strong enough right now to fight it too much.
Sighing Tsunade turned and grabbed up a sheet from "Sasuke's" bed and tossed it on the floor before knotting up the catheter. “There... now... Jiraiya come with me. I want to discuss something with you.” she turned to Sasuke. “You stay here until Naruto comes back. Got it?”
Nodding without looking up was Sasuke's only answer. He seemed entranced by his own burns and his expression was complete sleepy-innocence.
Jiraiya followed Tsunade out, not saying a word until they were far out of Sasuke's earshot. “What is it?”
Tsunade was quiet a little longer until they turned out of the hospital and were outside. “It's funny... that Sasuke has always been completely uncontrollable, in life and undead-life... until just now... don't you think?” she inquired wondering if Jiraiya was thinking the same thing she was.
“Hm...” Jiraiya grinned mischievously. “Naruto definitely seems to hold Sasuke's leash, doesn't he?”
Tsunade smirked a little, her walk slow and casual. “That's my point exactly... you know Naruto best... what do you think about making them a unit? Would it work or would it fall apart at the seams...” she mused a little and then tilted her head in realization. “Perhaps we should inquire Kakashi on this as well... He knows Sasuke better than most... since we can't talk to Naruto.”
“I'm... hm…” Jiraiya thought about that for a moment. “I would see first how Naruto's going to act around Sasuke in the long run. He's all buddy-buddy now, but that might change. And definitely ask Kakashi about Sasuke, but Sasuke's changed so much since he left...” He shrugged.
Tsunade nodded a little at Jiraiya's reasoning. “You have a very good point. Let's see how they behave and then we'll see about making a unit of them... perhaps by the end of the next Chuunin exam we'll be able to decide... But… Let's go consult Kakashi right now though... and get his insight. Ne?”
“If he isn't busy,” Jiraiya chuckled wickedly.
Tsunade rolled her eyes. “Then we'll wait for him to finish and then talk to him!”
“Or we could just walk in and laugh at the looks on their faces,” Jiraiya suggested with a grin.
She half-choked and then whipped around smacking him relatively lightly on the top of his head. “Ecchi!!” but then she smirked just a bit.... then added to Jiraiya’s surprise, “Alright... Let's see this master peeking skill of yours that you always used to brag about... this Cloaking Jutsu,” she said and grinned at him. It never hurt to humor friends sometimes and she was feeling pretty good at the moment.
Jiraiya bowed and motioned that Tsunade lead the way, his grin getting more wicked by the second.
With a smile of her own she vanished, teleporting to Iruka's apartment. She honestly didn't know why Kakashi didn't give up his place and just move in with the school teacher. She supposed it had something to do with Iruka never having suggested it to her knowledge.
Jiraiya and Tsunade appeared in Iruka's living room, much to the surprise of the Jounin on the couch. “What are you two doing here...?!” Kakashi asked.
“Oh, damn, you're not busy,” Jiraiya pouted, earning a pole-axed look from Kakashi.
“Excuse me...?!?!”
“It's nothing, Kakashi.... We wanted to talk to you about Sasuke... and something we were thinking about doing. Perhaps after the Chuunin exam is over provided Sasuke passes,” she stated. She and Jiraiya would have to taunt them some other time. “Where's Iruka... by the way?” she asked as she looked around curiously.
“Back at the school... We just finished lunch.” Kakashi gave Jiraiya a suspicious look. “What do you mean, 'oh damn you're not busy'?”
Knowing that Kakashi had already figured it out, Jiraiya did the smart thing and disappeared so as not to get "killed".
“Pervert,” the Jounin grumbled.
Shaking her head, Tsunade moved over to sit next to Kakashi and began to lay out their small and basic plan for the two boys. She'd need his opinion on it for certain... she just hoped he would be right.
“I think the best way to do it is just tell the boys your idea and see what they do,” he said once she was done. “Sasuke's changed so much since he became a vampire that I can't predict what he'll do anymore.” Kakashi smiled knowingly. “Though I have a strong hunch he'll say yes. Naruto... He could really go either way.” He shrugged.
“So, you honestly think I should just tell Sasuke we're putting a leash on him and using Naruto to do it?” she asked jokingly, not realizing how serious Kakashi was actually being.
“Sure, go ahead. I'll be out in the hall with the body bag, waiting,” Kakashi joked back. “Though Naruto would absolutely love you for putting it that way.”
“Hmmm.... Well, perhaps I can rephrase so that they both like the sound of it...” she muttered a little to herself. “Thank you for your time Kakashi...” she murmured and stood. She vanished in a cloud of smoke.
