Chapter 21: An Unexpected Surprise
Hidden Sand Village
Naruto slipped into a five tailed stage two chakra cloak giving control to Kurama as the three girls took a hold of his body. Kurama flipped through a set of hand signs before slamming his hand on the ground.
They were gone in a burst of smoke. As the smoke disappeared the three sand siblings watched the dawn sunrise, one of them already wanting the blonde back with her.
Kitsune Valley: one month after arrival
Naruto, who was blindfolded, was racing through the forests surrounding Kitsune Valley. He jumped over low fallen tree trunks and leaped onto and vaulted over other obstacles in his path that were too low to slide under. Behind him, chasing him were a pair of black wolves.
“Naruto jump, turn left and then turn to the right.” Kurama called as he acted as all of Naruto’s senses in this exercise.
Naruto continued to follow Kurama’s instructions as the he raced through the forest. “Today will be the day Kurama where we will beat those wolves and be the first back to the temple.” Naruto said as he sensed the two of them putting some distance between the chasing wolves.
“Don’t get cocky Naruto this overconfidence of yours has already caused us to fail this exercise three times today and every time this week.” Kurama growled to the blonde who stumbled over a fallen branch. “See what I mean.”
“Alright, alright you may be right…”
“I am right, now turn left and jump.” Kurama interrupted the blonde’s little speech.
Chuckling Naruto followed the fox’s instructions as he turned left and jumped over a large puddle in the middle of his path. Following Kurama’s directions Naruto continued to run through the forest putting distance between himself and the chasing wolves.
“Keep going we’re not far from the temple now.” Kurama said. “Sharp right then turn left, keep running straight, left, now right and it’s a straight run to the temple.” Kurama instructed as Naruto followed his direction.
Naruto broke out of the forest into the clearing around the Fox Sage Temple. Ripping off the blind fold he looked around to see the pair of wolves follow him out of the forest. Walking up to him, the pair of wolves grinned as they nodded in deference to him before the largest of the pair spoke. “Well done Naruto you finally did It.” he said in congratulations before the other wolf cut in. “Or did Kurama finally get pissed off enough to rip into your ear.” He chuckled teasing the flushed and panting blonde Jinchūriki.
Naruto smiled back ruffling their ears as he patted their heads. The two wolves walked away as both the fox and wolf councils made their way across the clearing towards the tired Naruto.
“Well done child you’re improving quite quickly. You’re stamina reserves and chakra coils are large than any person in living memory, maybe except for the first Hokage.” The eldest of the Fox Council said with approval.
“Indeed, you’re control over your chakra has improved beyond belief in this single brief month, your chakra control is better than most Jōnins.” A large male silver wolf that was the eldest and was also the leader of the Wolf Council said.
“And now you are half-way through your bonding training with Kurama.” Kuzunoha said walking forward with a grey and black wolf beside her.
“Tomorrow it will be Kurama’s turn to trust in you to accomplish your mission.” The wolf said before explaining the exercise.
“Do you two remember the rules of the exercise?” Kuzunoha asked Naruto and the physical form of Kurama standing beside the blonde. Both nodded even though Kurama was still grumbling about the exercise.
“Will you stop grumbling Kurama; you’re acting like a young kit. He put his faith in you to lead him safely through the forest while being pursued by enemies, now it is your turn to believe in him to use your power effectively and responsibly.” Kuzunoha laughed hitting him on the head with a single flick of one of her tails.
The two were standing before the fox summons Temple in Kitsune Valley as the sun rose above the hills in the east and dawn was turning into morning.
“Now Naruto remember as long as you are using Kurama’s chakra he will be using your own chakra.” A large black wolf named Shadow said standing in front of Naruto.
“I remember.” Naruto replied getting antsy with the delays.
“Good you’re both ready, Kurama drop your physical form so you can begin.” Kuzunoha said backing away from Naruto.
“Finally.” Naruto sighed closing his eyes and calming himself down.
“Remember your mission is to get the wolf summoning contract from their Temple and bring it back to the Temple here in the clearing within the next three days.” Kuzunoha said as she and Shadow stood off to Naruto’s right.
“You can begin good luck Naruto.”
Naruto nodded and walked into the forest to begin the exercise. As he walked towards the wolf summons forest and tundra territory he thought about the exercise and the best way to achieve his goal. He knew he couldn’t rely solely on Kurama’s power that’s what the wolves would be expecting. He was sure this test was not on using Kurama’s power like a crutch but to only use it in dire circumstances.
It was the middle of the afternoon when he exited the other side of the forest and was facing the hills that were the valley walls. Following the small path he had been shown the day before, he walked through the gully following the river that cut its way through the valley walls.
Halfway up the gully there was a large waterfall that cascaded tons of water down into a lake of clear, pure clean water. Naruto stopped on the side of the lake. Looking down at his reflection on the water’s surface he admired the changes in his face and body after a whole month of training and bonding with Kurama inside him.
His ears had elongated to have sharper tips. The pupils of his odd colored eyes had changed into fox like slits. His canines had permanently elongated. The tips of his canines were exposed from his mouth as he allowed them to rest upon his lower lip as he admired them.
Looking at his hands he admired the sharp claws at the end of his fingers. He had yet to test them but Kurama had assured him they could tear into human flesh as easily as his own could.
His blonde hair was jagged and wild. His fringe fell just below his eyes, his bangs fell down to his jaw line and the rest of his hair was spiked except for four tendrils that fell down to his shoulder blades.
He was smiling as he admired his wild look he really did look the part of someone capable of ending the world if he so wished.
“What has you so amused Kit?” Kurama asked as he watched Naruto admire his wild appearance in the clear, reflective water.
“I was just thinking about what the girls said about my appearance yesterday.” Naruto chuckled along with Kurama who could remember exactly what Naruto’s mates were saying.
“It won’t be long now Kit before they’re going to want kits of they’re own.” Kurama continued to chuckle as Naruto grinned continuing to stare at his reflection.
“They would make great mothers for my kids.” Naruto replied honestly as he looked away from his reflection and up at the blue sky above thinking about another woman with hair like the midnight sky.
“Are you thinking about that woman in the Land of Waves?” Kurama asked knowing that was exactly what the blonde was doing.
“Yes I’m thinking about Tsunami.” Naruto replied as he remembered the time he spent with the kind beautiful woman.
“Do you want to mate with her?” Kurama asked rhetorically.
“Yes, but do you think she changed her mind. She’s what twice my age?” Naruto replied as he cupped his hands in the water and brought it up to his lips so he could drink the cool, clear water.
“No I don’t think she would change her mind.” Kurama replied as Naruto continued to drink from the lake.
“I guess I’ll only find out if I go see her.” Naruto said as he dried his hands on the sides of his pants.
“Then let’s finish this mission, sign those summoning contracts and you can take a break, use the Hiraishin to visit her and mate her.” Kurama said with a wicked chuckle as Naruto smiled at the fox’s antics as he planted a specially marked kunai into the ground next to the lake before he started to walk along the path up the gully to the wolf summons territory.
Kitsune Valley
As the sun rose higher into the sky Hinata, Haku and Karin were standing in a clearing on the far side of Kitsune Valley. In front of the three teens stood Kuzunoha, Vermilion and a three-tailed female silver fox named Shiver.
For the past month they had been training with the three foxes. They were even training alongside Naruto during his Sage training especially when Hinata and Haku were both revealed as being possible candidates for signing the fox summons contract on their first day of training.
“Today we’re going to see if you are really going to be capable of summoning one of us. You’ve all been taught the signs and steps for performing a summoning jutsu.” Kuzunoha said as she presented them with a wrapped scroll being held by one of her tails.
Unfurling the scroll she laid it out before the three teens.
“This is a temporary contract for the three of us.” Kuzunoha said pointing to herself, Shiver and Vermilion with her right paw.
“What about Naruto, why aren’t we doing this with him?” Karin asked looking up from the scroll on the ground.
“As you know he’s being tested now and depending on how he goes he will be doing this sooner or later.” Kuzunoha replied. “Besides he has the power to have multiple summoning contracts.” She continued looking between the three teens.
“So this is our test to see if we’re capable of having the foxes as our summoning contract partners?” Hinata surmised.
Kuzunoha nodded as she went on to explain the test. “Now you will sign your name in blood to this contract, then we’ll be summoned back to the temple, your test is to try and summon us back here, understood?” she asked.
The three teens nodded as a fourth fox walked into the clearing. “Mother you summoned me?”
“Yes these three are being tested to see if they’re capable of summoning us and I need you to watch over them and evaluate if they’re capable and worthy enough to sign our contract, understood?”
“Yes mother I understand, how long is the test?”
“Same as Naruto’s three days. Girls whenever you’re ready sign the contract.”
The three teens took turns signing the contract with their blood. With the contract signed Kuzunoha rerolled the scroll and picked it up with one of her tails.
“Ashibayai start the test half-an-hour after we’re gone ok?”
“Yes mother.”
With a wave to the three teens and a wink to Ashibayai from Shiver the three female foxes disappeared in a burst of smoke.
Wolf Den Forest- Wolf Summons Territory
Naruto masking his chakra signal and scent, ghosted from tree limb to tree limb his steps never making a sound. His senses were working overtime as he tuned them to pick up the slightest sound, scent or tiny movement. His eyes darted back and forth as he looked left, looked right, looked behind him as he turned in small semi-circles as he continued to move further and further into the dense forest.
He could smell the wolves that were in the forest around him. He was lucky that none of them where anywhere near the gully that carved its way through the hills that separated Kitsune Valley and Wolf Den Forest.
“Hey Kurama, do you know where the wolves temple is?” Naruto asked his furry tenant.
“Yes it is hidden in the heart of the forest.” Kurama replied as Naruto stopped on all fours on a high tree branch. He sniffed at the air, his sensitive ears twitching as he strained to pick up any foreign sounds under the chirping of the birds above.
‘Nothing out of the ordinary, the birds aren’t disturbed so there is no foreign presence.’ Naruto thought as he scanned the forest in front of him, occasionally looking back to scan the forest behind him.
“Do you know exactly where the temple is?” Naruto asked as he ghosted to the next branch.
“Yes I know where it is, just follow my directions and you will find it.” Kurama said imparting his knowledge of the area to Naruto.
“Ok I think I know where it is, if I go off track let me know ok, Kurama?” Naruto said as he continued to ghost from tree to tree as he headed further into the forest.
Naruto had to slow his pace down as he closed in on the heart of the forest. Smelling the air he slowly maneuvered his way around the wolves that moved around the forest.
Sticking to the shadows and weaving his way through the forest’s heart Naruto ghosted towards the glade that sheltered the Wolf Summons Temple.
Landing on a branch that overlooked the glade he could view the entirety of the glade below him.
In the center of the glade was the temple, a small stream running along the side closest to Naruto. With his heightened senses he could tell he was on the eastern side of the glade, besides he could see the descending sun directly across the sky from him.
He watched as all sorts of different wolf summons, some with more than one tail moved about the glade below. He was glad he had masked his scent and was suppressing his chakra signal as he watched the wolves move around.
‘What’s the best way into the temple without getting seen?’ Naruto thought looking around the glade trying to plan his next move. “Hey Kurama is there any other way into the temple without using the front entrance or the den entrance?” Naruto asked his plan formulating in his mind’s eye.
“No, there are only the two entrances that I know of.” Kurama replied yawning as he watched Naruto’s mind at work as he studied the glade and tried to solve the puzzle before him.
With his plan set out Naruto moved with quite confidence assured in his own abilities to accomplish the task at hand.
Naruto slowly slipped a Hiraishin kunai out of the holster on his right leg. Balancing the blade between his thumb and forefinger he waited for the wolves to be as far away from the temple as they would go before he flipped the weapon in his hand and threw the kunai towards the temple. The kunai landed on the roof, the blade embedding itself into the roof.
Smiling at the pinpoint accuracy of his throw Naruto waited until the wolves that were closest to the temple were no longer looking at the temple. Watching as the last wolf turned away from the temple Naruto used the Hiraishin to instantly teleport himself from his hiding spot in the tree line to the temple roof. He landed just above where the kunai was imbedded in the roof.
Silently he ghosted over to the edge of the roof. Quickly scanning the glade to see if the coast was clear he vaulted off of the roof and landed on the soft grass on all fours without a sound. Quietly he slipped through the front entrance of the temple, hiding himself in the shadows within.
‘So far so good.’ He thought as he let his enhanced foxlike eyes adjust to the dim interior of the temple.
The almost pitch black of the temple was gone replaced by an overcast like dull grey. ‘Wow.’ Naruto thought with a small smile as his eyes easily adjusted to the darkness of his surroundings.
At the rear of the temple Naruto could see a pedestal with what looked like a tube or maybe a scroll case. The interior of the temple was completely deserted as Naruto moved from shadow to shadow making his way along the side wall of the temple.
Stopping at the foot of the raised pedestal Naruto looked around, scanning the large vault-like room for any sign of a trap.
Content that there were no traps he cautiously put his right foot on the first step. Still scanning the room he slowly and cautiously stepped onto the next step.
‘Something is off, but I can’t put my finger on it.’ Naruto thought cautiously stepping onto the third step then the fourth step.
He could hear and feel his heart beating in his chest as he stepped onto the last step and was directly looking into the green eyes of a pitch-black wolf.
‘Shit, busted.’ Naruto thought as he snatched the scroll. Ripping it open he looked at the scroll and quickly read the words to make sure it was the summoning contract. Seeing the names of previous signers he quickly rerolled it and placed it inside his black jacket.
Letting his chakra flow through him he saluted the growling wolf that was crouched and ready to pounce on him and teleported back onto the roof. Grabbing the kunai that was imbedded in the roof he placed it back into its holster.
“Alright Kurama I’m gonna need some of your power so I can teleport us back to that waterfall and lake in the gully.” Naruto said as he heard the commotion in the temple below him.
“So that’s why you planted that Hiraishin kunai back there.” Kurama said in surprise, inside he was beaming with pride that Naruto had been able to plan so far ahead. “Haku is really rubbing off on you.” He said as he granted his power to Naruto.
“Yeah you think so?” Naruto asked as he funneled Kurama’s chakra through himself and extended it towards the gully and the Kunai he had stabbed into the dirt earlier.
‘Yes it is still there.’ Naruto thought as he pinpointed the kunai letting Kurama’s chakra flow through him. He activated the jutsu just as a trio of wolves came running out of the temple.
In an orange flash he was gone.
Kitsune Valley
“Summoning Jutsu.” Hinata cried slamming her bloody hand down on to the grassy ground at her feet.
Yelping in shock and surprise she retracted her hand from the sudden cloud of smoke that erupted from the ground where her hand had made contact.
Emerging from the smoke cloud strode Kuzunoha a satisfied grin and an “I’m always right” look on her face. The vixen walked over to the shell-shocked Hyūga who was staring down at her bloody hand.
“Are you ok Hinata?” she quietly asked the still shocked teen.
“Y… yes I’m o… ok I just d… didn’t exp… expect such a chakra drain.” Hinata whispered as tried to control her breathing and slow down her racing heart.
“Yes, my mistake, we summons often forget how much of a chakra drain the first summoning is.” Kuzunoha replied with a light chuckle.
“It would have been nice to know beforehand.” Hinata panted with a smile as she slowed her heartbeat and regained her breath.
“How long before the other two sum…”Kuzunoha was cut off.
A large burst of smoke erupted before Haku, the cloud of smoke rising high into the air. Emerging from the smoke was Shiver. Shiver walked up to and sat beside the panting Haku who like Hinata was unprepared for the chakra drain involved with summoning. Haku gratefully sunk down to her knees, leaning on Shiver for support as she regained her breath. Catching Hinata and Kuzunoha watching her she grinned at her friend.
The three foxes and two Kunoichi watched Karin as she attempted to summon Vermilion.
Karin like Hinata and Haku before her slammed her bloody hand down on to the ground. A smaller burst of smoke compared to the other two’s summoning erupted in front of her.
As the smoke cleared the three foxes and the three Kunoichi were shocked to see not Vermilion or any other fox but a pure white female snow leopard.
Shocked the three foxes and two Kunoichi all looked at each other then back to the panting yet smiling red head who hadn’t taken her eyes off of the leopard in front of her.
“What’s going on Kuzunoha?” Hinata asked what everybody else was thinking.
“Hm, I’m not entirely sure. She obviously hasn’t signed a summoning contract with the cats. We would’ve known when she signed the temporary contract.” Kuzunoha spoke slowly as she tried to puzzle out what had just happened.
Karin was awestruck by the pure beauty of the snow leopard in front of her. Slowly she stretched out her hand towards the beautiful creature in front of her. “Who are you?”
The leopard sniffed at her outstretched hand. Liking how the female smelt she rubbed her head against Karin’s hand.
“I am Frost. Hurry we must hurry, follow me.”
Gully Pass Waterfall
Naruto gasped in shock as he was splashed with icy cold water. Gasping at the shock of landing in cold water he inadvertently inhaled a lung full of icy water as he struggled to break the surface of the lake.
Choking he struggled to break the water’s surface. Continuing to struggle for freedom from the icy water he quickly lost sense of where up and down was. His vision began to darken as the cold sapped him of his strength.
Numb and quickly losing consciousness he felt adrift in a sea of darkness. ‘Is this it, is this all there is to my life?’ he thought closing his eyes as he was swallowed by darkness.
