A/N: Here’s a Sasuke
& Gaara chapter. They are figuring
some things out about each other and what they feel.
Review Responses:
nm1716: Thanks so much.
I hope I don’t disappoint with this one.
Nejislady: I have to agree on Cary Elwes being drop dead
gorgeous in that movie. I’m glad someone
likes my sense of humor. I’m a little
dry at times, but I try not to let it get too dry in my writing. Hiashi is fast becoming one of my favorite
characters to write…even if it is an OOC Hiashi. I’m glad you liked it when I finally let Neji
top. I hope this chapter doesn’t
disappoint.
SexySesshy: I’m glad
you liked it. Thank you for taking the
time to review. It really does make my
day.
Chapter 20 – Learning
the Little Things
Gaara rubbed his eyes in the morning. He smiled softly. He had slept almost all night. Either it was Sasuke’s presence or he had
actually gotten through to the fucking raccoon bastard that used to keep him up
at night. Gaara rolled over to his side
and saw that Sasuke was still sleeping peacefully. The birds were back again, and bigger than
ever. This feeling wasn’t going to go
away the way it did with Naruto.
Gaara carefully extracted himself from Sasuke and snuck into
the bathroom. He sighed at his
reflection. His hand came up to caress
the ‘love’ on his forehead. He’d thought
it laughable that someone would put something like that on a child who would
forever be unlovable. Now he wasn’t so
sure. Sasuke seemed to, at the very
least, love him as a friend. He knew
Naruto loved him as a friend. He wasn’t
sure about Kankuro, but he was positive that Temari loved him.
He sighed and turned the shower on. He wasn’t sure if it was all right to take a
shower at a friend’s place after a sleepover, but he really needed one. He hadn’t taken one after the exams and he
was really feeling the dirt and grime now.
He dropped his sand armor and let the water run over his bare skin for
the first time in ages. He hadn’t felt
that he could trust anyone enough to drop the armor, but here with Sasuke and
Naruto, he truly felt safe.
Gaara sighed when he felt clean, truly clean, for the first
time in as long as he could remember. He
stepped from the shower and grabbed a towel to dry off. He loved the feeling of the soft material
against his bare skin. His sand wasn’t
even trying to force itself back on his body right now. He sighed.
“Are you there, Shukaku?”
Gaara gasped as he got a rumbling yes in his head as an
answer. “Have you always been this
connected to me?”
An amused chuckle responded.
I’ve always been able to hear what
you’re saying. You’ve just been
conditioned not to listen when I was speaking to you.
Gaara sighed. “I
should have known. Do you care for me
the way Kyuubi cares for Naruto? Sasuke
says the demon sometimes makes an appearance just to keep Naruto from harm.”
There was a contemplative silence before Gaara heard the
answer. I suppose I do. I never knew how
much it bothered you not sleeping. Why
haven’t you spoken to me before?
Gaara shrugged his shoulders and continued drying his
body. He loved the feeling of the towel
against his skin. He might have to ask
Naruto and Sasuke if he could take a couple of towels back home, since he didn’t
have anything like this waiting for him.
He sighed. “I just didn’t think
anyone cared enough about me to worry about what kind of sleep I was getting.”
The voice was dark enough to be black when it spoke this
time. That is because of your father.
Your sister and brother have always cared for you deeply, but if they
spent too much time with you, your father would ground them. Your father was the one who wanted you to be
a monster. Your sister and brother just
wanted you to be their friend; family.
Gaara smiled softly. “Well
I’ve got that now. Why don’t you get
some rest? I know you like to sleep
during the day.”
A contented rumbling noise echoed in his mind. It was strange to hear that voice, yet
somehow it had always been in his unconscious.
The raccoon must have spoken to him all the time; he just wasn’t open to
listening. He’d have to thank
Sasuke. This would make his life that
much more bearable. He felt his skin was
dry now and decided he’d better put the armor back up. You couldn’t be too careful, after all.
As he opened the door, Sasuke was just raising his hand to
knock. Sasuke blushed. Gaara still had water dripping from his
hair. A drop fell to Gaara’s cheek and
Sasuke wiped it away before realizing what he was doing. He pulled his hand away and blushed harder. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “I was just going to ask if you needed
anything.”
Gaara turned his head to the side. He
was blushing like crazy, wishing that his stupid sand shell would cover the
blush, but it never had. I always wanted people to be able to tell
what you were feeling, so I made the sand translucent. Gaara chuckled a little. “I’m fine, thank you, Sasuke.”
Sasuke nodded. He
moved to the side so Gaara could get out.
“You saw where things were in the kitchen yesterday. You can just go find something you like to
eat. I’m going to shower and then I’ll
be out.”
Gaara nodded and moved around the room. He pulled some cereal down from the cupboard
and grabbed a bowl. When he had the
cereal poured and put back, he grabbed the carton of milk from the fridge and
poured it over the oat flakes. He sat
down at the table and began to eat his food. He could hear the shower running. That brought images, out of nowhere, of what
Sasuke might look like in the shower.
Gaara was getting uncomfortable.
He’d gotten erections before, but never in connection to anyone in particular. He shifted in his seat, finding that he
finally was comfortable. He forced the
images out of his head, all while eating his cereal, and found the erection was
going away and he was feeling better.
He looked up at the sound of someone entering the
kitchen. Sasuke’s brother was coming for
breakfast with his husband. “Good
morning, Gaara,” Itachi said.
Gaara nodded in return.
“Good morning, Itachi. Genma.” He watched as the two went through the
kitchen and made their own breakfast. They
smiled at each other frequently. Genma
would take every opportunity that he could to touch Itachi, whether it was a
small kiss or just a soft touch to a shoulder.
This must be what it’s like to be in love. After all, Naruto said the next step after dating
was marriage. These two were married so
they must be in love.
Genma smiled softly at Itachi as he noticed Gaara watching
them. “Let’s eat with him. He’ll have a chance to ask whatever questions
are burning a hole in his brain right now.”
Itachi nodded and they took their cereal to the table to join
Gaara. Genma smiled at Gaara, “How was
your night here with Sasuke?”
Gaara smirked. “It was very nice. We watched some movies and had ice
cream. I like ice cream very much.”
Itachi couldn’t help the small chuckle that passed his
lips. “You like my brother, don’t you?”
Gaara blushed, but nodded.
“Naruto told me about love, and I was watching him with Shino and you
and Genma. I am not sure how I feel
about Sasuke, but I get the feeling that birds live in my stomach when I see
him.” He blushed again before adding, “I
very much appreciate his friendship.”
Genma shrugged. “Sasuke
has some claws, but if you figure out the right way to pet him, he’s a really
loyal person.”
Itachi nodded. “Despite
being the one who caused the ending of his relationship with Shikamaru, Sasuke
would still do anything for that boy. He’s
fiercely loyal once you’ve earned his trust.
Because of our father, though, he doesn’t give out that trust easily.”
Gaara sat back and crossed his arms. Sasuke didn’t trust easily, but he had just
ended a relationship with a man he was having sex with. Did that mean Sasuke didn’t trust him but was
still willing to have sex with him? Was
Sasuke the kind of person who just wanted sex?
Itachi saw the fleeting emotions flying behind Gaara’s
eyes. As a fellow non-emotion-expressing
person, he knew exactly what each subtle change to the eyes meant. “He’s not just into sex. Deidara was a rebound. I guess we should have all been more worried
about Deidara than about Sasuke.”
Gaara quirked a non-existent eyebrow in confusion. Naruto’s voice cut through the kitchen. “Deidara never let himself feel love
before. He liked to get into someone’s
pants and then be gone. Sasuke’s not
like that. He made Deidara wait, and
Deidara ended up falling hard for Sasuke.
Then Sasuke broke up with him yesterday.”
Shino wrapped his arms around Naruto’s waist before they too
made breakfast and came to sit down with Gaara.
Shino smirked. “I have a feeling
that’s because Sasuke likes intellectual stimulation. He probably liked Deidara’s personality and
thought that would be enough to sustain him.
When it proved that Deidara couldn’t keep him stimulated through
conversation, when he couldn’t relate to Deidara about things that interested
him, Sasuke probably realized he wasn’t in love with Deidara.”
Gaara nodded. So
Sasuke liked smart men. Well he was
smart. Despite not being allowed to do
much, he was allowed to read. He read
any book he managed to get his hands on, usually through Temari or Kankuro or
Baki. He smiled softly. He was realizing slowly that he did always
have a select few who loved him. “Thank
you.”
He stood from the table to nods and went back to Sasuke’s
room. He lay down on the bed and closed
his eyes. There was so much to
digest. He didn’t want to go back to
Suna yet. He wanted to stay here with
Sasuke. There was just no way he’d be allowed
to do that. He groaned and covered his
eyes with his arms. Was it possible that
Sasuke was attracted to him?
The door to Sasuke’s room opened and Gaara pulled his arms
from his eyes. He saw Sasuke in just his
pajama pants, carrying a bowl of cereal with, shutting the door behind
him. Sasuke blushed when he saw Gaara on
his bed. “Good morning.”
Gaara smiled. “Good
morning, Sasuke.” He moved over so
Sasuke could sit. “I want to thank you
for telling me that it was possible for Naruto to communicate with his
demon. It made it possible for me to
speak with Shukaku. I didn’t know that I
was able to do that.”
Sasuke smiled. “Of course. I want to thank you for staying in with me
last night. I just don’t think I felt
like being out.”
Gaara nodded. “That
is apparently understandable after a break up.”
He paused, wanting to ask Sasuke a question. “Did you love him?”
Sasuke frowned and shook his head. “I realized that a while ago; I just didn’t
want to admit it.”
Gaara paused. “I want
to stay here with you instead of going back to my home. My father will try to force me back into
being just a weapon. He will keep trying
to keep my sister and brother from me.
He won’t let the villagers get to see the new me that Naruto has woken
up.” He felt moisture at his eyes was
shocked. “I’m leaking?”
Sasuke laughed, hard.
It wasn’t to be mean, but Gaara asked about leaking in such an innocent
way. Sasuke regained his composure and
shook his head. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
It’s just that you asked so innocently.”
He sighed. “It’s not
leaking. You’re crying. You’re sad.
I cried when Shikamaru left me. I’ve
cried some after too, when I get sad about the way I messed up my life.”
Gaara contemplated the emotion. “Sad?”
Sasuke nodded. “Like knowing that
bad things are going to happen and I don’t want them to?” Sasuke nodded again and wiped a tear from
Gaara’s eyes. “I don’t want to be
sad. I don’t want to go home. I will be sad at home.”
Sasuke smiled softly. “You must go
home. You must fight to change
things. Not physically fight, but fight
the way that Naruto has always fought for recognition. Tell your father off if you must. You know Temari and Kankuro love you and will
side with you.”
Gaara gasped. “You
have no idea how scary my father is.”
Sasuke chuckled. “True,
but I know how scary my father is, and I told him off when I told him that I
wanted to be with men and not women.”
Gaara’s confusion was evident for only a moment. “Is it not normal to find men attractive?”
Sasuke shook his head.
“It’s no less normal than finding women attractive. It is just that two men cannot have children
and my father was hell-bent on Itachi and me producing heirs. Instead, he ended up losing two sons.”
Gaara was silent for a moment. “But you’re still both alive. How has he lost you?”
Sasuke clenched his teeth for a moment before forcing his
jaw to relax. Gaara didn’t know the
story, after all. It wasn’t his fault
for being curious or for being kept from the world by his father. “My father disowned the two of us because of
our sexual preference.” He sighed. “I was disowned first, when I told my father
about Shikamaru after he had broken up with me.
Itachi was disowned later when he married his long time boyfriend
instead of the girl my father picked to match him up with.”
Gaara growled. “I don’t
understand fathers that do not appreciate their children.” His eyes narrowed. “I don’t understand people who do not accept
what they do not know. It would make
more sense to me to try to understand something new.”
Sasuke smirked as he set the bowl down and wrapped his arms
around Gaara’s neck in a hug. Gaara
stiffened before relaxing. Sasuke wasn’t
a threat to him. In fact, Sasuke was
making him feel good. His birds were
back, but he felt more excited than ever.
He tentatively put his arms around Sasuke’s shoulders. Sasuke breathed out in relief as he sat
holding Gaara. He knew he had to be a
part of Gaara’s life, and friendship just wouldn’t be enough. He pulled back from the hug and noticed Gaara
looked calmed and peaceful. “Gaara, I
don’t know how you feel about this, but I think I could like you as more than a
friend. I won’t rush you into anything,
but I want to come visit you in a couple weeks.”
All Gaara heard was more than friends. He knew Sasuke was feeling the birds
too. He wasn’t sure how he just
knew. You should kiss him, Gaara. He’d
like it. Knowing that Shukaku was
right, Gaara pulled the sand barrier down and grabbed the back of Sasuke’s
head. He pressed his lips to Sasuke’s. He frowned when he got no response. True he’d only learned about kissing
yesterday through the movies he watched, but he didn’t think he had done
badly. His musing was interrupted when
Sasuke suddenly pulled him back and began kissing him again. It was almost frantic, as if Sasuke were afraid
that he would change his mind.
Sasuke’s mind was in a state of shock as Gaara’s hands
landed on his head and his mouth found his own lips. When he realized Gaara was pulling away he
couldn’t let it happen. He wrapped his
hands in Gaara’s hair and found it was softer even than Shikamaru’s. He opened his mouth and claimed Gaara’s in an
intense way. He had to let Gaara know
just how much he liked him. He couldn’t
necessarily say love yet, but he knew this was right.
When his lips broke away from Gaara’s he rested his forehead
against the smooth one of Gaara’s. He
smiled softly. “You trust me enough to
lower your sand?”
Gaara’s jade eyes were searching his for any hint of deception,
but they’d find none. Sasuke wasn’t interested
in casual dating. He’d never been
interested in casual. Gaara nodded just
a bit. Sasuke’s hands traveled over
Gaara’s arms and neck. He let his finger
trace an unguarded cheek. He smiled and
pulled back. “I’ll never make you regret
that trust, Gaara.”
He sighed as Gaara’s mask went back up. Gaara frowned. “My sister, brother, and sensei are here to take
me back. I’d like it if you visited me.”
Sasuke nodded. “I’ll
try to get Tsunade-sama to give me a mission to Suna soon. Promise you’ll make time for me?”
Gaara nodded just before there was a knock on the door. It was Naruto. “Your team is here Gaara.”
Gaara sighed before answering. “Thank
you, Naruto. I will be right out.”
Sasuke smiled sadly. “I’m
going to miss you. I don’t want to let
you go.”
Gaara frowned. “You will
see me soon, right? You promise to try
anyway?” Sasuke nodded. Gaara smiled.
“You have a phone right? You can
call me sometimes. I got a phone while I
was here. My father might not like it,
but I won’t let him take it from me either.”
Sasuke smiled. “Let
me get your number.” After putting his
number is Gaara’s phone and letting Gaara put his number in his phone, Sasuke
pulled Gaara close one more time. He let
his lips caress Gaara’s for a minute before pulling back. “Let’s get you to your family, I guess.”
Gaara nodded and squeezed Sasuke’s hand once before opening
the door. Kankuro smirked. “What the fuck were you doing in there
together?”
Gaara glared at his brother. “Talking,
not that it’s any of your business.”
Temari smacked Kankuro upside the head. “Leave him alone. Gaara, I’m sorry to say we have to leave.”
Gaara nodded. “I know. I just want to say goodbye to Naruto.” He turned to his new friend. “Thank you so much, for everything.”
Naruto grinned. “Hey,
what are friends for?” His voice turned
serious. “I know you are a good
person. Don’t let them change that,
okay?”
Gaara nodded and pulled Naruto into a hug. “Keep Sasuke safe for me?” he whispered to
his new friend.
Naruto smiled and nodded.
“Get going. And remember, I’ll be
Hokage before you can make Kazekage.”
Gaara laughed softly.
“Keep dreaming, Naruto. I’m going
to be Kazekage while you’re still just a genin.”
Sasuke stood at the door watching Gaara until he couldn’t
see him anymore. He sighed and turned
back to see four sets of eyes watching him.
“Oh shut up!” He growled.
Naruto smirked. “Didn’t
say anything, bastard.”
Sasuke sighed and threw his hands into the air. “Fine.
I like him. Are you fucking happy
now?”
Naruto smiled and wrapped an arm around Sasuke’s
shoulders? “Ramen? My treat.”
He looked at everyone. “You’re
all invited.”
Sasuke shook his head.
Only Naruto thought everything could always be fixed by ramen. Still, it seemed like it would be a good
idea. “Yeah, sounds good. You guys can tell me what I missed at the
festival.”
Naruto laughed. “Good,
because I’ve been dying to tell you about what happened with Neji, Shikamaru,
and Neji’s uncle.”
Sasuke quirked a brow.
“Sounds interesting all ready.”
