The hastily planned wedding of Kakashi Hatake and Anko Mitarashi managed to come off without a hitch. Anko had wanted to have the wedding before she was showing and Kakashi wanted to be healed up but still in town. Two weeks was a tight schedule, but everything came together, including a nice band for the reception. Kakashi had a special fondness for swing music and he was delighted to get something besides a DJ for dancing.
Sakura wore the backless red dress again. At least now her pinky toe had a nail again, so she could wear her strappy red sandals. The extra four centimeters of height was nice too. She had to admit she liked Kakashi’s old fashioned music. While she loved dancing to the hot club beats and loud pop music, there was something about the traditional dancing and band that gave an air of sophistication and class to the evening. She was not on duty either, so she was excited about the prospect of sipping sake and dancing the night away.
After Kakashi and Anko’s first dance, the band led off with a fast number. “Sakura, dance with me.” Her favorite blonde shinobi grabbed her by the hand. They knew each other well; Naruto spun her and swung her around. For her part, Sakura kept up and had a good sense of his moves. It was a joyful dance of friends.
A slower song came next and Sasuke stepped up. She took his hand and stepped gracefully into his arms for the next 4 minutes. “Sakura, you look amazing.”
“Thank you, Sasuke. You look good too.”
He twirled her lightly under his raised arm. “You know, I don’t dance much. But I just had to have one with you. Have you thought about me at all?”
Sakura knew what he meant. Sasuke was looking for a bride of his own. The elders had some pressure on him to start a family. She sighed, “Sasuke, I’m flattered, truly. I’m just not ready for motherhood. I’m sorry. You are a dear friend to me and I know you’d be kind. But…”
“But your heart belongs elsewhere, I think?”
Sakura blushed at his suggestion, “Maybe. Anyway, I have to find out.”
The song was coming to an end. “I wish you the best of luck in life and love, Sakura. I will always be your friend.”
“And I will always be your friend too, Sasuke.” They both smiled. It was a bittersweet moment.
Ibiki Morino tapped her shoulder lightly, “May I have this dance?”
The room went quiet as mouths fell open in shock. Sakura smiled, “Of course.” And took the older man’s hand. This drew even more stares and whispers.
“You are absolutely gorgeous. Though it seems we are creating a bit of a scandal. But then, I don’t have many friends.”
“That is true. Most people don’t appreciate what you go through in your work. They only see the painful side of it.”
“Yes, well. It is difficult to explain. You caught on quickly enough though. Smart girl.”
Sakura smiled as they danced around the room. He was more graceful than his towering form suggested. “You saw me in a learning moment.”
Ibiki laughed, “I assure you I was the one being schooled. My hat is off to you. Others have tried to pull information from me, but you succeeded.”
“You are too kind, sir.”
“And you are the first to say that to me as well.”
The room was a veritable stir of gossip about the old interrogator and the young medic. “I don’t know about you, but I rather enjoy keeping people guessing about me. It can be a distinct advantage.” Sakura mused.
“Absolutely. Though I warn you, the older you get, the more difficult that is to achieve.”
Sakura laughed, “Oh really, sir? You seem to be doing a damn good job of that at this very moment.”
He smiled, “And I’m having a lovely time with a beautiful girl too.”
“Let’s give them something to talk about then.” Sakura mused as the song ended. She reached up and kissed Ibiki on the cheek.
“Thank you for the dance.” He bowed and kissed her hand lightly.
“I’m sure we’ll talk another time.”
A snappy song was queueing up and Kiba popped up, “Dance with me, babe?”
“Sure” and they flew off to a fast swing number, twirling and stepping around the room.
Sasuke was sulking at a table near the back as he sipped sake and nibbled at a plate of dumplings. Old music and dancing. He was happy for Kakashi, naturally. But he hated dressing up and these social functions were such a waste of time.
A stunning young woman with long black hair (wow, it actually covered her ass!) in a silky lavender gown sat next to Sasuke with a grumble. “Is this seat taken?” She was clearly in a bad mood and had her own sake.
“It is now.” Sasuke was direct and harsh.
The young lady growled, “I hate these things. All the dancing and small talk. I just want to throw shuriken around the room.”
Sasuke raised an eyebrow. “Couldn’t agree more... So, you’re a ninja?” He asked.
“Yes. Not that anyone cares. All I get from my family is talk about marrying this guy or that guy… Just get married and have babies. You have no idea what it’s like to be hounded about reproducing your DNA.” Was she a shinobi… Please, was the sky blue? She was 18 years old and a chunin. She’d been ready for the jounin exams for 2 years, but her father wouldn’t permit her to take them yet. Her family was driving her nuts.
He sighed and sipped his sake, “you’d be surprised.”
She harumphed at him in disdain, “Seriously, no one understands me. No one knows what it’s like to constantly be in the shadow of an older sibling. I mean, we both know I have more talent, but she’s just ahead because she’s older. No one even sees me. It’s … so frustrating.”
Just then Naruto and Hinata popped off the dance floor for a drink and sat down opposite the scowling duo. “Hey, Sasuke! Chatting up Hinata’s little sister Hanabi here, huh? Man, it’s good to see you socialize for once.”
Sasuke put a hand over his face as Hanabi spoke snidely, “So you’re Sasuke Uchiha?”
He turned to the side and looked straight at her. “Would you like to leave and go spar with me?”
Her eyes brightened at the opportunity to ditch the pretty dress for fighting clothes. And her family could not complain if she went with Sasuke since he was on the short list of men they were wanting to marry her off with. “Meet me at training ground 2 in 15 minutes?”
“Absolutely.” They bolted.
Sakura was sipping a glass of punch and catching her breath when the tall, dark haired shinobi approached, “Dance with me Sakura?” Shino held out his hand just as the band played the first few notes of “moonlight serenade”.
Sakura took his hand and smiled, “I’d be delighted.” He looked and smelled wonderful and this song was simply enchanting. Who knew Shino Aburame was such a suave dancer? He didn’t use words and his eyes were hidden behind the dark glasses, but Shino communicated to her with his entire body as they floated around the dance floor. He held her firmly but gently. His steps were sure and patient. He twirled her slowly, bringing her back into his strong arms. And as the song drew to a close, he dipped her over his arm, her bare back arching as a pointed toe balanced in the air. Their faces were so close… he kissed her softly on the lips. That kiss! Oh, what a kiss! Sakura had been kissed, but never like this. His lips buzzed lightly with the vibrations of his tenants, yet they were soft, sensuous and strong at the same time. The energy between them was intoxicating. Sakura could barely breathe as her thoughts and feelings sped through her mind at lightning speed.
…
Shino knew he didn’t stand a chance with her. Sakura was a goddess in another league. Still, that red dress of hers showed off her athletic physique and rounded assets to perfection. He’d watched her dance and mingle as he had sipped punch and been polite to those he spoke with. Knowing such occasions were rare and not wanting the day to pass too quickly, he’d requested “moonlight serenade” from the band leader. They’d danced to it at the Cloud wedding a month ago. It felt like a year. So much had passed between them; he had no right to hope, but a ninja must be brave. So he asked her to dance.
Dancing with Sakura was like living in a dream. Her soft skin and her light fruity scent were like magic to his senses. She was so responsive, following his lead gracefully without a word between them. This time he would be brave; he would kiss her and let the consequences be as they would be.
He pulled her up to her feet, sensing confusion and sudden weakness in her arms. “Thank you for the dance, Sakura.” He kissed her hand lightly.
“Shino, we should speak in private.”
