Chapter 20
Shikamaru leaned against a wall, “Mou, so troublesome. I was just joking, there are no cameras. I knew you guys would try to listen in because things have been strange between me and Naruto all day, you guys couldn’t resist.”
Ino huffed out a breath and crossed her arms.
Shikamaru raised a dark brow, “How is it that I’ve become the bad guy? I seem to recall that it was you guys listening in.”
“Well if you guys weren’t being weird and just told us what was wrong we wouldn’t have had to.” The rest of their friends nodded at Ino’s rebuttal.
The other eyebrow joined the first, “So sorry.”
Naruto stood up from the couch arm he was sitting on, “Guys calm down. I’m going to make us some lunch, it will make everyone feel better. Shika, stop riling Ino up; you guys act like a married couple.”
Neji chuckled, “Well they did date for a year.”
“Thank God you got over that,” Shikamaru looked at Ino.
Ino blushed, “What’s that supposed to mean!”
“What do you guys think of Pot Lasagna? Pot Lasagna sounds good, right? Objections anybody? No? No objections? Great! Pot Lasagna it is!” Naruto stood up.
“It would have worked out if you liked me back,” Ino mumbled.
“I did like you back. I stayed, didn’t I?” Shikamaru replied.
“That’s because you were too lazy to break up.”
“Would you have let me?”
Ino’s smile looked more like the bearing of teeth, “I guess you are smart.”
Naruto looked between the two of them, bewildered, “For some reason I’m sensing some hostility between the two of you. I thought you had a friendly break up?”
Ino laughed and pushed some of her long hair behind her ear, “We did. We still get annoyed at each other occasionally though.”
“Oh, ok. I’m going to start lunch then,” Naruto stated.
Naruto went to the kitchen and started pulling out ingredients: ground beef, lasagna pasta, homemade tomato sauce, garlic, onion, and cheese. He pulled out a pot, saucepan, a cutting board, and knife. His picked up the knife and his hand moved across the cutting board rapidly as he chopped up the onion and garlic. He added the pasta to the pot and started sautéing the onion and garlic in the saucepan before adding the beef. While both were cooking he grated the cheese. When the beef was done he added his sauce and the finished pasta, the cheese was added last to the finished product and allowed to melt before he stirred vigorously.
He dished the food into plates and left the remainder on the stovetop incase anyone wanted more, “Guys! Food is ready, come and get it!”
He picked up two plates and walked to the formal dining table, setting them down. Shika followed his example and put the two plates he was carrying down as well, “Formal dining table?”
Naruto shrugged, “I want everyone to sit together, this is the only one that will fit everyone.”
Everyone sat down and it was quiet as they ate. When they were done they set down their utensils.
“Thanks for the food, Naruto. It was wonderful as usual,” Neji said.
“Do you always have to be so polite? You’re such a stick in the mud,” Kiba whined, “The guy is a world famous chef and this is what they feed us. Don’t we deserve complicated shit?”
Naruto smiled, amused, “Sure, Kiba. When you can recall the names of any of that ‘complicated shit’ you let me know and I’ll make it for you. Besides, I didn’t hear any objections when I asked if there were any.”
“You’re just being cheap,” Kiba grinned.
“Yep. You don’t even want to know how much what you were just eating was.”
Naruto piled the plates in the sink to be washed later and went to the main room where everyone was. Nothing was on and everyone was sitting as seriously as they ever got. Naruto knew that it was time to catch up, everyone being free two Saturdays in a row didn’t happen perchance. Added to the fact that it was the Saturday after he came back- it didn’t take a genius to figure out why all of his friends, who were generally very busy people, were at his house.
Naruto broke the silence, “It seems that I’ve been away for a while, does anyone want to update me on what’s been happening with you guys?”
“Didn’t Shikamaru tell you?” Sai asked.
Naruto gave him a look, “No, actually. I wanted to hear it from you guys and I figured that we’d talk soon anyway. So Sai, how’s your art?”
“It’d be perfect if you’d let me draw you naked.”
Naruto didn’t even blush, he had heard Sai say it so many times, “Alright then,” he said lightly, “All is right in the world with Sai. Anyone want to go next? Hinata? How’s the hospital?”
Hinata twiddled her fingers, “A-a-as alright as a-a-a hospital can b-be. I’m j-j-just happy t-to help the patients. S-s-some l-leave and some d-d-don’t.”
Naruto smiled at the dark haired woman, “So practical. Is everything alright otherwise? Your family isn’t giving you any trouble, are they?”
“N-no, N-naruto-kun.
“Good.”
“Naruto, you’re stalling,” Neji stated, “If you really want to know what’s been happening lately with everyone ask us later. You know why we’re here.”
Naruto sighed, “Why do things always come back to Sasuke?”
“You tell us. What happened?” Gaara asked.
Gaara never really talked unless he was concerned or angry and he was very impatient so Naruto answered, “We broke up and this time I had enough.”
“But why now?” Kiba asked, “What was so different about this time? We all thought you’d break up with each other when you lived together in university but you didn’t. We thought you’d kill each other then.”
Naruto chuckled darkly, the chuckle turned into laughter and he was about to answer when Shikamaru looked at him sharply and grabbed his arm, “Don’t.”
Naruto smiled and slid his arm out of Shika’s grasp, his voice held a bit of a growl when he responded, “Don’t what, Shika?”
“You know what, Naruto, not like this. Answer their question.”
Everyone looked at each other again with confusion in their eyes. Was there something else Naruto was hiding? What was it and why had Shikamaru stopped him from answering? Things kept getting more and more puzzling. Gaara stared hard at Naruto for a moment before he seemed to figure it out, Neji’s eyes narrowed and he made a note to talk to Gaara later.
“I had enough and I told him,” Naruto took a deep breath, “I told him that if we broke up again it would be the last time. He didn’t listen to me. He thought that I’d be waiting at his whim and he was wrong. I thought it wouldn’t be so hard and I was wrong. He was everywhere so I left.”
Ino started, “But-”
“No! No buts. I’ve just about talked this to death. No more! It didn’t work out, alright? It didn’t work out and perhaps if I didn’t push so hard or want him so bad I would have found that out sooner. That’s it.”
“Okay, Naruto,” Neji said. Naruto was generally pretty upbeat but his friends knew when he reached his limit on something. This topic wouldn’t be brought up again unless Naruto broached it and he had just shut it down. Naruto could be patient to a fault but when he was done, he was done and you didn’t want to see him get angry about something.
“Why did you leave for so long though? Why didn’t you tell us where you were?” Neji asked. It was still on the topic of Sasuke but more indirect, he figured he could get away with that.
“Would you guys have let me go?”
Neji opened his mouth to reply and was cut off, “No, really. Would you have let me go? We all know you wouldn’t have. Maybe you would have left me alone for a week or two but He wouldn’t have. And when the appropriate amount of time passed you guys would have started bugging me. You would all probably have told me that me and Sasuke needed to talk. There is nothing to talk about. And you guys definitely would not have let me leave for over two months to get my shit together without bothering me.”
“And Shikamaru would have?” Ino sounded a little offended, “He’s the only one you called.”
“Yes and that’s exactly why I called him. He didn’t ask me to come home because he knew I wouldn’t. Had I called you Ino, would you have tried to convince me to come home?”
“Well, yeah but-”
“Then I’ve made my point. Home will always be here to come back to, what I needed was solitude or at least as much of it as I could get, Shikamaru understands that. Not counting high school or when we were kids, have I ever bothered you guys when you needed to be alone?”
Everyone shook their heads and Naruto nodded, “There you go. It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, I did what was necessary to get some time. I’m sorry that I distressed you guys and made you worry but I’m not sorry I did it.”
