They decided on lunch at the barbecue place because Sakura could have her sake. She drank the first bottle quickly and her nerves began to settle a little. She still wasn't looking forward to the appointment, but at least she wasn't quite as frazzled as she was before lunch.
When they finished eating, he walked her to the salon. "So, can I at least know what color it is?" Kakashi asked casually.
She stared at him a moment. "What color what is?" The alcohol must have slowed her down.
"Your dress." He smiled as he held the door open for her.
She hadn't even noticed where they were. "Oh, um, I guess you can know that much. It's red with embroidered Sakura trees on it."
"I can't wait to see it." He noticed her look around and start to fidget. He pulled her to him and, before she had a chance to fight, he kissed her until she couldn't think straight. He turned to the tiny woman standing behind the desk. "My wife is a doctor. She's not used to salons."
The little woman smiled warmly. She had beautiful silky red hair, a wide smile and perfectly groomed nails. "We'll take good care of her." She said and she signaled to another woman around the corner. This lady was a bit taller than the first, but just as warm and friendly. She reminded Sakura of Ino a bit and that helped ease her fears, if only a little.
"Let's get you started." She said, then put her arm around Sakura and pulled her into the salon.
Kakashi turned to the first lady again. He smiled at her and she seemed dazzled for a moment and he had to quash a momentary impatience. He made sure pay for the full treatment for Sakura, then, with a few more errands in mind, he headed out.
* * *
Sakura was terrified. She didn't need all this stuff. She figured they'd just pin her hair up or something and put a bit of makeup on her. She passed large tubs filled with bubbling thick brown substances and women in chairs that looked like torture devices with all sorts of weird looking creams and goop spread over their faces and bodies. Next was another room with noises that sounded suspiciously like power tools and still another where two men looked to be beating a woman on her back while she moaned into the towel she had her face buried in.
When the lady touched her arm, Sakura jumped. She indicated a chair that looked much like the first torture chair she'd seen when she came in. She shook her head and started to back away. "You know, I think I'll just, um, brush my hair."
But before Sakura could get very far, the lady took her arm and steered her into the chair. "Relax, dear, I'm sure you'll enjoy it."
Sakura didn't know about that, but she tried to remind herself that this was for the mission, she was a strong shinobi and she could face anything. She'd taken beating after beating from Tsunade in training, faced the Seven Swordsman of the Mist and the Akatsuki. She could do this. She'd still prefer facing down the Akatsuki any day, though.
A minute later she was handed her first glass of wine. It tasted much like the wine they'd had on their "wedding night" at the inn. She drank about a third of it, then set it on the little table next to her. After taking a few deep breaths, she opened her eyes again and said, "Okay. I'm ready."
The lady laughed. "My name is Rai. It's nothing to be afraid of, really. Now, lay back so I can wash your hair."
"But…" Sakura began, "I just did this morning."
Rai just shook her head. "This is different. Please, relax."
Sakura lay back again and tried to think about anything other than where she was. She started going through the ninja rules, but then the warm water hit her head and she realized it felt good. Rai massaged her head while she worked the soap into her hair and a few minutes later, Sakura felt it being rinsed off.
Rai sat her up and wrapped a towel around her head. "Now that you are more relaxed, please go into there," she said as she indicated a closet-sized room, "and change. I'll be back in a minute."
"Change?" Sakura asked, but Rai was already gone. Reminding herself it was for the mission, she went into the little room and realized it was full of fluffy terry robes. Taking a deep breath, she closed the door and did as asked.
For three hours they rubbed, spread things on her, clipped, snipped and buffed. They did something to her nails, twisted and pulled on her hair and, she was sure, stripped about two layers of skin off of her face and body. Despite her initial fear, however, Sakura felt really good, except for a mild headache. That was simple enough to fix, however, when she begged a minute alone and took care of it herself.
When Rai came back again, she sat her up completely, helped to clean the goop off that was still on Sakura's face and proceeded to rub something else on. Sakura was getting a little tired of this and opened her mouth to say so.
"Please! Don't do that! You're almost done, I'm just doing your makeup now. If you move too much, I'll mess it up." Sakura closed her mouth and sat still while Rai wielded a pencil and several brushes. Finally, she pulled a smaller pencil and a single tube out.
Sakura was sure that she was drawing something funny on her face, but then she capped the pencil and switched to the tube. Even she knew what lipstick was and sat patiently while Rai put it on her. A moment later, she turned the chair and Sakura stared at her reflection.
She was fairly certain they'd replaced her with someone else. Her forehead was nowhere to be seen, her face had just the right amount of color to it and her skin glowed. She turned this way and that, examining the hairstyle and knew it would be perfect. Rai had pulled it up in a twist on the back of her head and had curls cascading down from the twist. Nestled in the small valley at the top of the twist was a silk Sakura Blossom. And in the front, she had bangs.
She loved it. She grinned at Rai's reflection. "Thank you! It's wonderful." She reached up to pat Rai's hand on her shoulder and that's when she also noticed her hands. She had nails. Not just her regular nails, they were long and painted and looked…natural. She examined them carefully, never having considered getting her nails done before, but they looked wonderful.
Rai handed her the lipstick and pencil. "Take these with you so that you can fix it after dinner. And enjoy your evening!"
On that note, Sakura remembered why she was going through all of this. She tried to hide her anger and smiled at Rai. "Thank you again. You did a really good job." On impulse, Sakura hugged her and turned back toward the front of the salon.
Rai escorted her out to the front desk and Kakashi was sitting in one of the chairs, Jiraiya's book in his hand. When she came out, he put it away and stood up, staring. "Wow."
Sakura blushed. After all the things that they'd done together, after he'd proposed, he could still make her blush. She cleared her throat. "So, it's okay?"
Kakashi still hadn't closed his mouth. He didn't even try, he simply nodded instead. Then he seemed to remember himself and snapped it shut. He scratched the back of his head nervously, his eyes crinkling in the corner. "Well, we should be getting back to the inn." He held a hand out to her, but she turned toward the clerk.
The little woman simply made a shooing gesture toward the door. Kakashi leaned in to her and whispered, "it's taken care of. And well worth it. You look….well, you glow."
Sakura's blush deepened, but she couldn't help but feel pleased. If going through that could do that to him, she'd have to seriously consider doing it more often. She took his arm and they left the salon.
Back in the room, it was time to dress. Sakura was getting more used to this sort of thing, so it didn't bother her so much this time. She gathered all her stuff and headed into the bathroom. "I'll need your help - through the door - in a few minutes. But let me surprise you with the whole thing put together, okay?"
Kakashi nodded. "If I have to." He sounded pained and Sakura laughed as she shut the door.
First, she pulled the red corset out and wrapped herself up in it. She even got it zipped most of the way up. Before she opened the door, however, she pulled the tiny red thong she had on adjusted it so that it sat comfortably. Then she pulled the stockings out, put them on and fought with the connectors.
That done, it was time to get help. She opened the door a crack. "Kakashi?"
He was there in an instant. He tried to open the door a bit more, but Sakura kept her foot against it. "No. I only need one arm." He grumbled, but reached in with his hand. "Just zip it up." She tapped her other foot on the floor in impatience.
"It's not easy when I can't see."
Sakura snorted. "As if." A few seconds later he found the zipper and it was done. "Thank you. Don't go far, I'll need you for the other one in just a second."
She pushed the door shut, then took the dress off the hanger. She unzipped the back and stepped carefully into it. She got it zipped about half way, but no matter how much she twisted and turned, she couldn't get it any further. Sighing, she opened the door again. "Okay, last time?"
Kakashi chuckled, but dutifully stuck his hand through the crack in the door. This time it didn't take him much to find the zipper and pull it up. "So, can I see you now?"
"No. Go away. I'll be out in a few minutes." She laughed as he grumbled, but shut the door anyway. Turning to the mirror, she adjusted her breasts, pulled and shifted things until she was happy with the way everything was. She touched up the lipstick, and was finally ready.
She stepped into her shoes, picked up the wrap and bag, took a deep breath and opened the door. But when she stepped out, it was her turn to be stunned. Kakashi stood at the other end of the room dressed in a formal tuxedo. It was all black, cut in simple lines and looked incredible on him. He had a plain white shirt and plain black bowtie.
She was positive she had real drool dripping off of her chin, but when she went to wipe it away, her chin was dry. "You look like something out of a spy movie." It sounded ridiculous, but it was the first thing that came to mind.
He was too busy to care, though. Sakura in a great dress was beautiful. The Sakura he saw coming out of the salon earlier was stunning. This Sakura in the red dress, the beautiful makeup, her hair pulled up and a neckline that should be illegal was enough to make him forget everything, including his name.
"You are…" he trailed off. There was nothing he could say, no words to describe it. He stepped across the room and stood in front of her. "I'm almost afraid to touch you, you're so beautiful."
He allowed himself another moment to stare at her before forcefully pulling himself together. "You seem to be missing something, though." He pretended to be puzzled for a moment as he tilted his head to the side to consider her.
Sakura panicked a moment. What had she forgotten? She looked down at herself. Dress? Check. Shoes? Check. Underwear? Check. She'd had her hair done, brushed her teeth, had makeup on. She needed to put a few things in her bag, but she didn't think he'd meant that. Puzzled, she looked back up at him. "What did I miss? Nothing else is going to fit into this dress…"
He just shook his head and smiled at her, then he held out a long flat box that she hadn't noticed before. "We're working tonight, but that doesn't mean I can't take an opportunity to spoil you." He opened the box and inside was a jewelry set with a necklace, earrings and bracelet made of pearls and rubies.
The pearls had soft pink overtones with the natural off-white color. All of them were very small and set in the center of the string was a teardrop shaped ruby the size of her thumbnail. The earrings had small strands of pearls with smaller teardrop rubies hanging off of these and the bracelet was a double strand of pearls with small bars of rubies stretched between them at intervals.
Sakura stared at the jewelry then at Kakashi. "Spoil me? I don't need… I…" too stunned to speak coherently, she just stood there.
Taking advantage of her stunned state, he took the necklace out of the box and laid it around her neck, fastening the clasp. Then he picked up the bracelet and put it around her wrist. "I'm afraid you'll have to take care of the earrings yourself."
He handed them to her and she looked up at him again. "I don't need things like these…" she began, but he interrupted her with a gentle finger on her lips.
"I know. It's must be why I like to give them to you." He sent a pointed look at the clock. "We need to go soon."
She shook her head and went in to use the mirror to put the earrings in. She didn't know what to think of it. She realized that she never really knew what his money situation was like. He got paid like all shinobi, portions of the fees for missions and so on, and she knew that he'd lived alone most of his life, but that was about it, as far as that went.
Pushing the thoughts aside for later, she paused to look in the mirror. He couldn't have picked a better set of jewelry out to go with her dress. She shook her head again. This was yet another aspect of him she would have to think about.
As she stepped back out, he looked her over again. "On second thought, perhaps we should take this sheet off of the bed, tie a few knots in it and put that over you. That might work better and allow me to keep my sanity tonight."
She laughed, she couldn't help it. "Doubtful. As it is, I wonder if I can fit a kunai in this bag. I might need it to keep the women away."
He chuckled. He held her wrap out for her and draped it over her shoulders. She stopped long enough to grab a few of her medic items and stuffed them into the bag. After that, however, there was no room left for any shuriken. She shrugged. If it came down to it, she'd have to use her jutsus, anyway.
He opened the door for her and they stepped outside. He escorted her down the steps with his hand on the small of her back. As they left the inn, Sakura was in for one more shock. There, at the curb, was a carriage. And honest-to-gods horse-drawn carriage.
"Kakashi?" She couldn't seem to look away from it. She'd seen them before often enough as dignitaries came through Konoha and needed transportation. She helped on the escort mission for the prince a number of years back and he'd had an entire train of them.
"You didn't think we'd walk, did you? That wouldn't be very good for our cover. How many normal women would be able to walk in shoes like yours more than a few blocks?"
She shook her head. "I guess you have a point. I can put chakra into my feet and help myself along. Well…" Kakashi opened the door and helped her up into the carriage, then climbed up next to her.
"Fushinji mansion, please." He said, then leaned back and pulled her up against him. "Like I said earlier, we may be working, but we can enjoy things a little bit, can't we?"
