Chapter Nineteen
The sound of a puppet moving filled the calm air, chakra strings glowing a soft blue in the night. The moon above, the very thing she had been named for, was half hidden. Before long she knew that it would be hidden from the world’s eyes until that thin sliver appeared once more.
Just like her.
Gentle blue eyes watched as the puppet under her control moved into a defensive stance before lashing out at the air. Kankuro would always check the puppet over whenever he came to Konoha and would even make any necessary repairs for her. Each time he was always pleased to see the telltale signs that she had been working with the puppet, laughing when he last had to make repairs.
She supposed that if she had seen a puppet rendered useless by a few well placed kunai, she would have laughed too. In all fairness, it wasn’t her fault that she had switched places with the puppet just in time to avoid another trip to the hospital. If the placement of the various kunai had been any indication, somebody was aiming to either put her in the ground or in a hospital room.
The former was a better bet. It was just a shame that she had realized the kunai were coming.
Mahina frowned slightly as she pulled the puppet back to her, holding it up while she allowed the chakra strings to vanish. Her gentle blue eyes focused on the various nicks in the puppet’s frame. Kankuro hadn’t repaired those since she had asked him not to, but she couldn’t understand why she hadn’t felt anything.
Why hadn’t she felt any fear when one of her own classmates attempted to kill her? Why had she only stared calmly between her classmate and the damaged puppet when the other students were calling for a teacher? Was there something wrong with her brain?
No, she had just gotten used to somebody trying to kill her. After all, she had spent three years playing the child whore to Orochimaru and doing everything she needed to just to survive. She had even done the same when she had been kidnapped by the Akatsuki and brought to tears when they showed her where they were keeping the Bijuu that they had managed to capture.
A pre-Gennin’s attack… had been nothing.
Deciding that it was time to go home, Mahina calmly put her puppet away before darting through the streets. Once she had cleaned up and changed into her pajamas, the girl nestled into her blankets and allowed sleep to overcome her weary mind and body.
“Good afternoon, Mahina-chan. How are you today?”
Mahina looked at the nurse for a moment before smiling at her. “I’m doing well. How about yourself?” Mahina questioned.
“Fine, thank you. Here for more blood tests?”
The ten year old nodded slightly and answered all of the nurse’s questions effortlessly. No, she hadn’t been experiencing any symptoms since her last appointment. Yes, she had gotten all of her recommended shots. No, she hadn’t been exposed to any illnesses recently.
Once her temperature and blood pressure had been taken, she was told to wait for the doctor. The urge to run took hold of her but she resisted. If she was discovered to be missing then somebody would call ANBU and then one of them would tell her father that she had run out of the hospital again. If that happened, then she’d get yelled at. Again.
She waited patiently for a few minutes before a doctor came into the room, looking at her medical records. She frowned slightly, not recognizing the doctor and she couldn’t remember Sakura telling her that they had gotten any new medics. “Who are you?” Mahina questioned.
“My name is Dr. Ataki. You must be Mahina.”
“I don’t remember seeing you around here before.”
“I just recently started working here.”
The girl frowned again before answering, “My aunt is a medic here. I want to see her.”
Dr. Ataki looked surprised for a moment before answering, “I’m sure that she’s very busy at the moment.”
“I want my aunt. She’s got pink hair and green eyes. Get her before you even touch me.”
She didn’t care that she was being difficult but she wasn’t going to let somebody she didn’t even know touch her. “I can see why you’re being difficult, but I trust that you’ll let me do what I need to do.” Dr. Ataki said with a solemn look. “After all, you could be a very sick little girl.”
“I’m not sick.”
“Then let me determine that.”
“Then get my aunt before I let you determine anything.” Mahina told him. “No one told me that there would be any new doctors and I refuse to let myself be treated by anybody I haven’t been told about.”
Now he could see why killing the girl had been tempting. “Look, I’m just trying to do my job so if you’d just calm down for a few minutes.” Dr. Ataki told her.
The doctor went flying back against the wall when Mahina caught a familiar glint in his eyes. “NURSE! NURSE!” Mahina screamed. “SOMEBODY!”
“Dr. Ataki” slowly got up, his eyes flashing dangerously. “You little brat,” he snarled angrily at her. “You are going to pay.”
The girl’s eyes widened as she slipped off of the examination table, her heart racing against her chest. “Go away!” Mahina screamed at him. “HELP!”
“Why they didn’t kill you when they had a chance is beyond me, but I’ll make sure that the job is finished this time.”
The “doctor” grunted as he was sent flying back, his posture slumping forward. “What in the world?” One of the ANBU questioned as they came running in. “Mahina, are you okay?”
Mahina shook as she was taken out of the room, watching over her shoulder as the “doctor” was taken out of the room. Whimpering slightly in fear, the girl allowed herself to be picked up and carried to Sakura’s office. “Did you recognize that man?” The ANBU officer questioned.
“No. He said that he just started working here but I didn’t remember anybody saying that there’d be new personnel. I demanded to have Auntie Sakura supervising, but he refused.”
“Why were you asking for Sakura to be with you?”
Mahina frowned slightly as she looked away before answering quietly, “Because he made me feel the same way that Kabuto used to.”
He was going to go gray before his time.
Naruto sighed softly as he and Sasuke went back to the house, each one weary from the day’s events. “Just remember, teme, there’s an excellent chance that even Hinata will be aggravated.” Naruto warned the raven.
“Got it.”
The two males entered the apartment and watched as Hikaru laughed and clapped while Mahina manipulated a small puppet to dance for the toddler. “I’m home.” Naruto called.
“Hi, Dad.” Mahina greeted as she allowed the puppet to fall. “Hi, Sasuke.”
“Da!” Hikaru shouted happily as he scrambled to his feet and went over to his father.
Naruto picked the toddler up before asking, “Where’s your mother?”
“In the bedroom. She wasn’t feeling good again today.” Mahina reported with a small frown.
The blonde nodded as he put his son down, wandering into his and Hinata’s bedroom. “How are you doing today, Mahina?” Sasuke questioned as he sat down.
“Fine.” The girl answered as she began making the puppet dance for her brother again.
“Your father told me what happened at the hospital.”
Mahina stiffened slightly before answering, “I didn’t kill him, did I?”
“No.”
“Too bad.”
Sasuke stared at the little girl, seeing the lack of emotion in her eyes. Her father may have taught her the value of human life, but she didn’t really care if it was somebody that made her feel terrible. “I want to hear your side of what happened.” Sasuke told her. “Why do you think he came here?”
Mahina looked at him quietly for a moment before answering, “You know that reason, Sasuke, and I don’t. Do you have what it takes to tell my father what really happened?”
That was a good question. He just wished that he knew the answer.
