----------Back in Konoha----------
Naruto didn't even stir as Sasuke carefully set him down on a hospital bed, or when the doctors began bandaging him and hooking him up to IVs. Kakashi waited until the doctors were done giving Sasuke a moment to make sure Naruto was alright before reminding Sauske that Tsunade wanted them to go speak with her in her office as soon as possible.
The look Sasuke gave his mentor was dark, but he gave Naruto one last look, a last brush of gentle fingers across Naruto's brow shifting the yellow bangs there gently before he turned and strode out with Kakashi. Dawn was nearing. It'd taken them longer than he would have liked to get back to Konoha, but that couldn't be helped. They entered Tsunade's office together to find Sakura, Gai, Asuma, Jiraiya and Kurenai already there.
Tsunade finally stood as they walked in and then she leaned forward planting one palm on the desk in the center of a report scroll. Her other hand was fisted against her hip. Her expression was like fine marble, and absolutely serious. “What happened?” she asked Sasuke directly. She knew Kakashi didn't yet know - nor did the others present - about the information she was about to impart to them. This was an emergency council convened in secret from the Council of Konoha's Nobles. They needed to settle this matter amongst themselves first. It was Ninja business. “What the hell happened, Sasuke? Why do I have a report of seven bloodless bodies sitting on my desk?!” For her part, she managed to keep her temper in check, but she closely observed the reaction of the others in the room. Sakura gasped and looked to Sasuke, shock written all over her face. A hand covered her mouth in distress. Asuma's lips tightened on his ever present cigarette and his eyes grew grim. He was less than pleased to hear the bad news, but he would remain quiet until he had something constructive to say.
Sasuke didn't look away from her, but he was silent. How would he explain this so that they would understand that this was completely a circumstantial event that was the product of coincidence and misfortune, he wondered.
Gai was about to make one of his usual overly loud exclamations, but a kunai pressing in his back from Jiraiya and a sidelong glare from Kurenai shut him up fast.
Kakashi stepped forward to join the group of ninja around the desk. He didn't like Tsunade's news any more than the rest of them and wondered how Sasuke was going to explain this.
Sasuke sighed once and decided that an upfront explanation would be enough. He hoped so anyway. “I was asleep for a month and a half... Did you think I wouldn't be hungry when I woke up? And you've already been told how tightly tied together my emotions and the Blood Lust are... I was more than a little pissed at finding Naruto taken and by my brother no less...” he said his voice even and low.
Sakura looked about her worriedly. What would they do to Sasuke now that he'd actually done some damage to the village? She could understand where Sasuke was coming from after hearing everything that she had from Naruto and from Tsunade's quick briefing when she had arrived at the Hokage’s summons, but what if it happened again... and again? Would it even happen another time? Asuma was silent still, mulling over everything he knew and what had just been imparted to him.
Tsunade was silent for several long moments and then straightened, only to sit down in her chair slowly. “How often do you think this will happen? Is it even really necessary for you to ‘Go to Ground’ as you called it?”
“It isn't necessary often, but sometimes, it is the safer course of action. If something traumatic happens, or if I'm injured very badly, I will do it automatically. This was one of the automatic occasions. It was a reflex reaction to something. It was just a terrible coincidence that Naruto happened to be looking for me when Itachi and Kisame happened to be looking for him....” Sasuke’s response was calm and steady.
Jiraiya continued to keep Gai quiet with the kunai to his back. He didn't have the patience to put up with his idiocy at the moment. He was too worried about the state of his youngest apprentice and what they were going to do about the results of Sasuke's anger. Kurenai wondered idly what had happened that made Sasuke ‘Go to Ground’, and what Tsunade was going to do about the bodies. Kakashi wasn't quite sure what to think. He had been the one who'd told Naruto where Sasuke was Resting, and now both of his students were in trouble. Behind his anger at Itachi he began to feel a bit guilty.
Sasuke moved closer to the circle of Ninja around Tsunade's desk and laid a hand on his Jounin mentor's shoulder. With empathy as strong as his, he could easily sense the emotions flowing about him like a turbulent river in a fierce storm. “I will take responsibility for my lack of control...” he said simply. What else could he do?
“It's not that much different... than a wolf that kills a sheep. Sasuke, as much as we humans hate being out-staged in some areas and this one particularly, is higher up on the food chain than we are... Is it really his fault, when it all comes right down to it, that he was pushed to all of this?” Asuma said into the silence that followed Sasuke statement.
Sakura nodded. “It's true, Tsunade-sama... Sasuke-kun can't help what he is now...”
Sasuke glanced at them surprised that they were so willing to defend him still and then looked back to Tsunade who was looking about her at all of her trusted “council”.
“Are there any other comments before I speak with Sasuke and Kakashi alone?”
Gai shook his head hurriedly, a little more focused on the knife in his back then the conversation around him.
“Asuma has a point,” Kurenai said thoughtfully. “Sasuke is higher up on the food chain.”
“But that doesn't mean it can happen again,” Jiraiya stated firmly, giving Sasuke a Look.
Kakashi just shook his head. The things he had to say were better said after the others had left.
Sasuke met Jiraiya's eyes evenly. “I have always and will always do my best to prevent the loss of human life from this village. I've already lost mine and my Clan’s... I know what it's like and it isn't something I would wish on any other soul.”
Tsunade sighed and looked at the notice of death and crimes upon her desk. The lower towns were in an uproar over this. They had no idea what they were dealing with that could drain the blood from a victim completely. There hadn't even been the usual livid bruises of leftover blood settling to the underside of the corpse the report had stated. Not even tiny ones. “Alright...” she stated and looked up finally. You are all dismissed, but for Kakashi and you, Sasuke,” she said and nodded to them. “Wait outside for the final decision. This will... eventually need to be brought before the Village Council of Nobles but for now it stays amongst us.” She was firm in her words and then nodded at them to go. Sakura was the last out the door casting one last look at half of her team before walking out and closing the door behind her. Tsunade turned to the two remaining Ninja in the room. “Kakashi? What do you have to say about all of this?”
Sasuke had long since dropped the hand that he had briefly rested on Kakashi's shoulder, but he looked to the Jounin now, curiously.
“I... was the one who told Naruto where Sasuke was Resting and when he was supposed to wake up. Also... Sasuke, did my telling you of Naruto's reaction to your leaving have anything to do with you Going to Ground?”
“No. When I left before, I had thrown my hitai-ate to Naruto and told him not to follow me because I was no longer part of the team. It was my way of making him stay here because I didn't know what I was going into leaving the village like that... The night I went to ground he and I had a huge argument. He'd kept my hitai-ate and when I told him...that I loved him he threw the hitai-ate back at me. I needed to remove myself from everything for a little while, so the best way for a vampire to do that is to shut down completely.” He shrugged a little. What was done was done and he couldn't change any of it now.
Tsunade slowly looked from Sasuke to Kakashi and waited. The Jounin usually hid his feelings very well and right now she had no idea what was going through his lazy brain.
Kakashi's blink was audible, but otherwise his surprise was well hidden. “...Oh.” ::He told Naruto WHAT?!:: Mentally shaking himself Kakashi turned back to Tsunade. “I think the best way to explain this to the lower towns and Nobles is it was just a horrible accident and that we will do all we can to prevent it from happening again.”
“I agree.” She nodded leaned back then returned her attention to Sasuke. “So what can we do to prevent this sort of thing from happening again?”
Sasuke swallowed a little. He still hadn't had a human bloodmeal yet. “Keep me well fed...” he said bluntly his eyes riveted now to Tsunade's jugular vein as it throbbed in her neck. All this talk of blood and feeding had reminded him, or rather his Lust that it hadn't been sated yet. “Ino, Iruka-sensei, and Lee have already offered their blood freely to me... The more donors I have to feed from the easier it will be for me to keep the Blood Lust under control.”
“How many donors is enough?” Kakashi asked.
“Bloodloss is a devastating thing... for vampires and humans alike. Where it makes you weak it makes me ravenous...” he murmured, only half of his attention on the Jounin. His eyes were still fixed on Tsunade's pulse at her throat. He could hear the blood as it rushed through her veins, could smell the sweetness and the coppery tang of it even through her skin. “As many donors as are willing to give...” he answered. “The more donors I have to take from the easier it will be on the them and on me. I won't have to restrict how often I feed.”
Tsunade shifted suddenly in her seat, Sasuke's gaze had suddenly made her a little uncomfortable. She had never really liked blood, not for most of her life, though she no longer feared it thanks to Naruto. “I... see...” she murmured and tucked her chin just a bit as she looked to the side.
“I think it's time Sasuke gets his breakfast,” Kakashi said smoothly, putting his hands on Sasuke's shoulders. “Come on, let's go see Iruka. He's been worried sick about you.”
Sasuke started a little and then glanced at Kakashi. His pupils were enormous though they did not yet take up the whole of his irises. “Hai...” he muttered clearly shaking himself. His amount of control over the Blood Lust certainly seemed to be getting better... he hoped it was anyway.
Tsunade nodded. “I'll see what I can do about finding willing donors for you. Does it hurt?” At Sasuke's negative headshake she nodded again. “Ok... I'll let you know as soon as I know.” And that was their dismissal.
Sasuke nodded and let himself be propelled from the room by Kakashi. The other ninja re-entered the office, Sakura throwing a glance at their retreating backs as she shut the door again. Sasuke couldn't have cared at the moment. He was heading to Feed.
