"Give me that damn fruit," Alvida hissed.

She snatched the strange, bumpy thing from Naruto's hand and bit into it hard. The taste flooded her mouth like spoiled meat and seawater. She gagged, eyes watering, but forced the pulp down anyway. A weird heat spread through her chest and out to her limbs. Her skin prickled, then smoothed. The weight she had carried for years started to lift. Her men froze where they stood, jaws hanging open as their captain's body changed right in front of them.

Alvida ran both hands down her sides. The old bulk was gone. Her waist pulled in. Her arms and legs grew lean and strong. Even her face felt different, sharper, smoother. She touched her cheek and laughed once, short and surprised.

"It's real," she breathed.

She looked across the deck at the blond man who had handed her the fruit. Naruto stood there with that big rune-covered book under one arm, watching her like he had expected exactly this. Behind him the birch chest sat open, a few bounty posters sticking out.

"You want me to follow you," she said. "Help with whatever crusade you got planned?"

Naruto nodded once. "I got maps. Government secrets. Names worth knowing. I'm building from the ground up, starting right here. You stick with me, you get stronger than you ever were. You get a real share of what comes next."

Alvida studied him. This was the same man who had knocked her flat with one punch not an hour ago. He didn't gloat. He just stood there offering her a seat at his table like it was nothing. A slow grin spread across her new face.

"All right. You got a deal. But you cross me and I don't forgive. I'm not that kind of woman."

Naruto's mouth curved into a real smile. "Welcome aboard, Alvida. We got a whole sea to take."

Her crew muttered but didn't argue. They had seen what happened to anyone who stood against him. Safer to fall in line.

Hours later the ship creaked under twilight. Alvida's men worked on repairs while Naruto moved through the deck checking lines and hull planks. Alvida found him near the mast, the sea breeze pulling at his coat. She leaned on the railing beside him and caught her reflection in a polished strip of metal someone had left lying around.

The woman staring back was not the one she remembered. Slimmer. Taller somehow. Her skin caught the last light like it had been polished. She turned her arm and watched how the glow slid across it.

She called one of her men over without thinking. "Swing at me. Hard."

He hesitated, then brought a practice blade down on her forearm. The steel scraped and skidded off like it had hit something slick and solid at the same time. The man stumbled back, eyes wide. Alvida laughed again, low and pleased.

Naruto glanced over. "Feels different, doesn't it?"

"Feels like I could walk through a storm and come out the other side laughing," she said. She looked at him sideways. "So what's the plan, Captain? We grab more captains, more fighters. That part's clear. But who?"

Naruto sat on a crate and spread out a stack of bounty posters. "East Blue's called the weakest sea, but there's still talent. Kuro's supposed to be alive somewhere. Don Krieg's fleet is scattered but breathing. Black Cat Pirates are out there. Plenty of smaller names too. Some of them might listen if we offer something better than what they got now."

Alvida watched the way his hands moved over the posters, steady and sure. She liked that. She liked the way he didn't waste words.

"You said something about recruits of your own design," she said. "What's that mean?"

Naruto tapped the rune book. "I spent years putting pieces together the Government never planned on. Strange powers. People who don't belong on the same crew. If we're going to break what they built, we need more than muscle. We need clever hands and odd tools."

They dropped anchor near a fishing hamlet the next morning. Bluefin Atoll sat on stilts over turquoise water, nets drying in the sun. Alvida walked beside Naruto down the dock, her new stride light and sure. She felt his eyes on her once or twice and made sure her hips moved just enough to keep his attention. When she caught him looking she smiled, slow and knowing. He gave her a small smirk back but kept his focus on the task.

An old shipwright named Yosuke agreed to patch the brig for good coin. He eyed Alvida's mace and muttered about keeping things quiet. Naruto promised they would.

The tavern was dim and smelled of old wood and fish. Naruto and Alvida went in with a handful of crew. Most locals gave them space. Alvida slid onto a barstool, crossed her legs, and shot Naruto a teasing look over her shoulder. He raised an eyebrow but didn't look away fast. That small spark of interest made her stomach warm.

In the corner sat a tall, thin man fiddling with a dagger and a stocky woman in a torn Marine jacket. Naruto called them over easy, like he was inviting old friends.

"You two look like you've seen trouble. Come drink with us."

The tall man came first. "Shamon. Ran with a crew that doesn't exist anymore. Now I drift."

The woman took longer. "Rin. Used to be a corporal. Left when my officers started shaking down villages for extra coin. Been running since."

Alvida leaned forward on her elbows. "Ex-pirate and ex-Marine. That's a pair."

Naruto kept his voice low and even. "I'm building something that hits back at the Government's rot and at pirates who hurt people for no reason. You join, you get a share and a real fight worth having. I'm not a tyrant, but when I give an order in a fight you follow it. Loyalty matters. Cross me and there's no second chance."

Shamon chuckled rough. "You talk like a man who already won something. Most pirates just want gold and a fast ship."

Rin watched him a long moment. "I heard the name. Uzumaki. The one they say should be dead."

Alvida smiled, proud and a little possessive. "He's the real thing. Dropped me with one hit. Don't let the face fool you."

Naruto gave her a quick sideways glance, mouth twitching like he was fighting a grin. "If you want in on something bigger than small scores, come with us. We pay fair. We watch each other's backs."

Shamon and Rin looked at each other. They had both been burned before. Still, something in Naruto's plain words seemed to settle.

"What do we got to lose?" Shamon said. "I'm in."

Rin nodded. "Better than waiting for the next patrol to find me."

Before anyone could answer, the tavern door slammed open. A pack of rough men pushed in led by a big brute with an eyepatch. He spotted Alvida and sneered.

"Alvida. Heard you got yourself a new look. Still owe me for that dice game."

Alvida stood slow, her new body moving with a grace that still surprised her. "One-Eye Mako. I told you last time what would happen if you showed your face."

Mako laughed ugly. "That new body won't save you. And who's the blond pup?"

Naruto's face went flat. "Naruto Uzumaki. You want trouble, you found it."

Mako's good eye narrowed. "The ghost? That bounty's gonna set me up nice."

He charged with a heavy club raised. Naruto stepped aside, caught the club in both hands, and snapped it clean across his knee. Before Mako could swing again Naruto drove a fist into his jaw. The big man dropped hard.

One of Mako's crew swung at Alvida. She twisted. The blade scraped along her arm and skidded off like it had hit something that refused to be cut. She brought her mace around short and hard. The man flew into a table and wood splintered everywhere. The rest of the crew backed off fast.

Naruto tossed coin to the bartender for the damage. He turned back to Shamon and Rin like nothing had happened. "We sail at first light. Docks if you're coming."

They left with locals still staring. Alvida walked close to Naruto on the way back, her shoulder brushing his arm on purpose. "You get all commanding when things turn rough. It looks good on you."

Naruto looked down at her. His eyes lingered on the way the moonlight caught the new lines of her face. He let out a short breath that might have been a laugh. "I have to be. This isn't a game. But I see how you're looking at me, Alvida. I'm not blind. There's a time and place for that kind of thing. Right now we got work."

Her cheeks warmed but she stayed close. "Fair enough, Captain. I can wait."

Back on the ship Alvida laid into her men about respecting Naruto's orders. A few grumbled until she rested her mace on her shoulder and reminded them what happened to Mako. Naruto set night watches and made sure everyone knew the plan.

By morning Rin and Shamon were waiting on the pier with their bags. They boarded without fuss. Naruto gathered the whole crew on deck once they were moving.

"On this ship loyalty comes first," he said, voice carrying clean over the water. "I'm not your king. I'm your captain. When I give an order in a fight you follow it. In return I keep you alive and make sure you get paid. We're building something that matters. If that's not what you want, the shore's right there. No hard feelings."

Most of the crew nodded. A few looked uncertain but nobody left. Alvida stood near the helm, eyes on Naruto the whole time. She liked the way he spoke, plain and direct. She liked the way his shoulders filled out his coat. She liked the way he had looked at her after the tavern fight, like he had noticed and wasn't entirely sorry about it.

Naruto caught her staring and gave her a small private smirk before turning back to the map table. Alvida felt her stomach flip. She turned away quick so he wouldn't see the smile she couldn't quite hide.

The ship cut through the waves toward new trouble, and for the first time in years Alvida felt like she was exactly where she belonged.

They made for the craggy inlets where rumor said Bloodaxe Hachiro hid. Alvida scowled at the memory of the man. He had taken cargo from her once and laughed about it. Naruto figured if a bastard like that could be brought in, he might be useful. Or at least stopped.

The approach was narrow, reefs and jagged rock everywhere. Rin stood at the rail with a spyglass. "There," she said quiet. A schooner rocked in the shadow of a tall cliff. A black flag with a red axe snapped in the wind.

"Grappling hooks ready," Naruto said. "No sudden moves unless they start it."

Hachiro's men spotted them and raised the alarm. The big man himself appeared at the schooner's rail, scarred and wild-haired, axe already in hand.

"State your business," he roared.

Naruto stood tall at the brig's rail. "Naruto Uzumaki. Come to offer an alliance."

Hachiro spat into the sea. "Alliances are for the weak. I take what I want."

Alvida rolled her eyes. "This one's got an even bigger head than I used to."

Naruto raised his voice. "You raid Marine convoys. Good. I plan to do more than that. Join me, share the spoils, stand under one banner. This is bigger than East Blue."

Hachiro's eyes flicked to Alvida, taking in her new shape, then back to Naruto. "The ghost who was supposed to be dead? Ha. Show me why I shouldn't kill you right now."

Naruto exhaled. "Because if you try, I'll end you. But I don't want to kill you. I want your skill. You can be part of something that actually matters or stay small-time. Your choice."

The ships came alongside. Hachiro leaped across with his axe still in hand. Alvida's men drew weapons but Naruto waved them down. Hachiro towered over him, axe head resting on the deck.

"You say I join, I get more power. What stops me from taking your head and your stash right now?"

"Me," Alvida cut in smooth. She stepped closer to Naruto, close enough that her arm brushed his. "He dropped me with one hit. I'm no pushover. Trust me on that."

Hachiro sneered. "Show me then. Fight me, Uzumaki. Force me to yield and I'll listen."

A hush fell. Naruto shrugged off his coat. "Fine. Hand to hand. No axes. No maces."

Hachiro laughed and tossed his axe aside. "Don't regret it."

They squared off in the center of the deck. Pirates circled. Alvida's pulse kicked hard. She watched Naruto's shoulders, the way he moved, light on his feet despite everything. She found herself gripping her mace tighter, half worried, half thrilled.

Hachiro lunged first. Naruto ducked the first swing and drove a palm into the bigger man's ribs. Hachiro barely rocked. He came back with a crushing haymaker that grazed Naruto's shoulder. Naruto spun and kicked him in the side, forcing him back a step. The deck thumped under their feet.

They traded blows, heavy and fast. Hachiro's fists were like hammers. Naruto moved quicker, slipping most of them, landing sharp hits that made the bigger man grunt. Alvida found herself leaning forward, breath caught. She had never seen anyone fight like this.

Naruto drove forward suddenly. His fist connected with a strange surge that slammed into Hachiro's chest like an invisible hammer. Hachiro coughed hard and dropped to one knee. He tried to rise but his arms shook.

"I… yield," he growled, eyes flashing with grudging respect.

Cheers went up from Alvida's crew. She stepped forward, a slow smile on her face, eyes moving from Hachiro to Naruto with open pride. Naruto rubbed his sore shoulder but stood straight.

"So," he said, extending a hand. "We got an accord?"

Hachiro took it, teeth clenched. "For now. Betray me and I'll rip you apart."

Naruto nodded. "You get your share. Just remember I command the bigger plan. If that doesn't sit right you can leave. But you'll lose out on everything bigger than what you got alone."

A savage grin spread across Hachiro's face. "Guess we'll see."

By nightfall both crews feasted on stolen rum. Naruto let the noise build. He noticed Alvida watching him from across the deck. She had found a spot near him, close enough that her leg brushed his when she shifted. She poured him a drink without asking and leaned in when she handed it over.

"You're something else in a fight, Captain," she said low, just for him. "Makes a woman wonder what else you're good at."

Naruto took the cup. His fingers brushed hers and stayed a second longer than they needed to. He met her eyes. "I appreciate the interest, Alvida. More than you know. But we got a long road. I need my head clear for it."

She didn't pull back. If anything she leaned a little closer, her shoulder warm against his. "I can wait. Just don't make me wait too long."

He gave her a small, real smile and let his hand rest on her lower back for one brief moment before he stepped away to check the watch. Alvida watched him go, biting her lip, cheeks warm. She liked that he didn't push her away completely. She liked that he wanted her but still put the work first. It made the wanting sharper.

Later Naruto laid out the plan for the Marine convoy near Bronze Cape. Alvida came up behind him while he bent over the map. She rested her hand on his shoulder and leaned over to look, her chest brushing his back. He didn't move away.

"Everything all right, Captain?" she asked soft.

Naruto glanced at her from the corner of his eye. "Yes. Just making sure the plan holds. And… thanks for having my back today."

She smiled, half shy and half predatory. "I'd hate to lose you. That's all."

She sashayed away, hips swaying on purpose. Naruto watched her go a second too long before he forced his attention back to the map. He could still feel where her hand had been.

The next morning two ships approached Bronze Cape under early light. Alvida's brig and Hachiro's schooner. Naruto had the captured Marine transport now too, insignia torn away. He stood at the rail and spoke to the whole crew.

"We do not kill for sport. We are pirates with a goal. When we strike, we strike hard and clean. Respect the plan and we win. Respect me and I will bring you through it."

Alvida stood near the helm, arms crossed under her chest. Every time he spoke like that her heart kicked. She wanted to prove she was worth standing beside him. She wanted him to look at her the way she looked at him.

Naruto split them into teams. Shore team: Alvida, Shamon, and some of her men. They would hit the Marine depot, cause chaos, pin the guards. Sea team: Naruto, Hachiro, Rin, and Hachiro's fighters. They would board the convoy once the shore was busy.

Alvida's boats touched the beach in fog. She moved up the cliff path with Shamon, taking watchtowers quiet and fast. Her new body let her slip between rocks and shadows like she had always been this light. When a Marine got too close she brought her mace down and kept moving. Shamon watched her with new respect.

"Whatever that fruit did, it suits you," he muttered.

Alvida just grinned and kept going.

Gunfire and shouting broke out around the depot. Alvida's crew pinned Marines behind crates. She felt bullets ricochet off her skin and laughed once, wild and free. She was untouchable. She thought of Naruto out on the water and fought harder.

Out at sea Naruto and Hachiro hit the largest transport. Grappling hooks flew. Naruto leaped aboard first, fists flying. Marines dropped without lethal blows. Hachiro roared and swung his axe through anyone who got in reach. Rin picked off sharpshooters from the deck with clean shots.

They took the transport fast, turned its cannons on the other ships. The second Marine vessel fired back but Naruto used the captured ship as cover and closed the distance. Soon the defenders broke.

"Victory!" Hachiro bellowed, but his eyes kept flicking to Naruto with something close to respect.

Then cannon fire thundered from behind a rocky outcrop. A Marine warship had been waiting. It pounded Hachiro's schooner. Wood splintered. The schooner listed hard.

Naruto cursed. "Reinforcements. We missed them. Grab what you can. We're leaving!"

Alvida's team got the signal and scrambled back to the boats. They had wrecked the depot but the warship was bearing down. Under Naruto's orders they used the captured transport as a shield and sailed hard. Hachiro's schooner sank behind them. He howled with rage but Naruto clapped him on the shoulder.

"We'll get you another ship. I promise."

They escaped into open water with crates of steel and munitions aboard. Alvida found Naruto on the deck of the transport later, staring at the horizon. She walked up quiet and let her hand rest on his arm.

"You're a devil in a fight, Captain," she said soft. "But a good man underneath it."

Naruto looked at her. For a moment his eyes dropped to her mouth. He reached up and brushed a smudge of dirt from her cheek with his thumb. The touch lingered. Alvida's breath caught.

"Focus on the win," he said finally, voice rougher than usual. "Plenty more battles coming."

She smirked but didn't step back. "I'm ready for them. By your side."

He let his hand drop but not before giving her arm a small squeeze. "I know."

They sailed on, the alliance bloodied but stronger.

Three mornings later they steered the captured transport toward quieter waters. Alvida's repaired brig followed. Smaller vessels had joined them, drawn by rumors of Naruto's growing crew.

"That warship from the cape might still be hunting," Naruto warned everyone on deck. "We need a base. Somewhere to stash the munitions, repair ships, and plan the next move without Marines breathing down our necks."

Hachiro suggested Ikkaku Atoll. Old fortress, hidden lagoon. Naruto checked the maps and nodded.

"Set course. Full sail."

Three days later the islands came into view. A central lagoon ringed by reefs. On the largest island sat a mossy, broken fortress, towers half collapsed, vines everywhere. Naruto stood at the prow, eyes bright.

"That's it. We fix the walls, station guards, make it ours."

Alvida brushed against his shoulder on purpose. "Or we could run off together and let them do the work," she teased, voice low.

Naruto laughed under his breath and turned to her. Their faces were close. She didn't pull back. Neither did he for a long second.

"Tempting," he said. "But they need me here."

She smirked, cheeks warm. "Can't blame a woman for trying."

He gave her a wink, quick and private, then turned back to the task. "Landing parties. Check for anything dangerous inside."

They rowed ashore. Giant lizard things roamed the courtyard. Naruto's group drove them off with noise and a few well-placed kicks. Alvida watched him work, calm and in control, and felt that same warm pull in her chest.

In the main courtyard she saw old stables, half-fallen towers, a big keep. She could already picture watchtowers manned, ships hidden in the lagoon, storage full of spoils.

Naruto's voice echoed off the stone. "From now on this is Fort Resolute. We clear the rubble, guard the walls, turn it into a stronghold."

Cheers rose. Alvida caught Hachiro's eye. Even the savage man looked impressed.

Work started at once. Crews cleared debris and hammered repairs. Naruto was everywhere, pointing out where watchtowers should go, making sure the captured transport stayed hidden behind the reefs. Alvida found excuses to pass by him often. Sometimes she rested a hand on his back when she leaned in to ask a question. Sometimes she let her fingers trail along his arm when she handed him water. He never pulled away fast. Once or twice his hand covered hers for a moment before duty pulled him elsewhere.

That night in the half-repaired banquet hall they spread maps across a long table. Shamon took notes. Rin pointed out Marine routes. Hachiro talked black-market contacts. Alvida sat close to Naruto, her thigh pressed against his under the table. She didn't move it. Neither did he.

Weeks passed. Fort Resolute took shape. Hidden by reefs, it became a safe harbor for pirates, mercenaries, even a few ex-Marines who hated corruption. Naruto traded with smugglers and built a quiet network.

One afternoon an old cloaked scholar arrived, guided by rumors that Naruto Uzumaki wanted ancient knowledge. Professor Kumegawa. Naruto welcomed him into the keep and showed him the rune tome.

"You have something tied to the Poneglyphs?" the old man asked, voice shaking with excitement.

"I want to know what the Government hides," Naruto said. "If you can translate it, you have my protection here."

Kumegawa's eyes lit up. "They hunt scholars like me. You will be in more danger."

Naruto set his jaw. "They've been hunting me for years. I can handle more."

While they talked in a quiet corner, Alvida lingered nearby. She felt a small sting of jealousy she refused to name. So many people needed him. She pushed it down. She wanted to stand beside him, not pull him away from what mattered.

Before Kumegawa could say more than a few words about a lost place called Hisashi Island, a pirate came running.

"Captain! Marine galleon sighted near the outer reefs!"

The fortress snapped into motion. Alvida joined Naruto on the walls. Through the spyglass she saw the galleon, sails half furled, searching.

"They might suspect we're here," Naruto murmured. "We can't risk a direct fight yet."

Alvida's heart pounded but her voice stayed steady. "What do we do?"

Naruto laid out a quick plan. Rin and Shamon would take a small boat out disguised as fishermen. If the Marines got nosy they would misdirect them. Everyone else manned the cannons hidden in the walls.

The operation worked. Rin and Shamon sold the story. The galleon sailed away. Relief spread through the fortress but tension stayed. Naruto gathered everyone that evening.

"This is how it is now. The Government is growing bolder. We stay sharp. We vanish if we have to. But we don't break."

Alvida stepped forward, mace resting easy on her shoulder. "If anyone doubts his leadership they can leave. But no one else in East Blue is offering what he is. A real chance to build power and hit back."

Her voice rang with conviction. Naruto caught her eye and gave her a small, grateful nod. She felt it warm her all the way through.

Later she found him alone on the ramparts, watching the moon on the water. She walked up quiet and stood shoulder to shoulder with him.

"You all right?" she asked.

He exhaled. "Tired. Thinking about how to keep everyone safe. How to actually make the vision real."

She reached out and rested her hand on his arm. "You're doing fine. And you're not alone."

He turned. Their faces were close again. Her eyes flicked to his mouth. He leaned in a fraction, close enough she could feel his breath. Then he stopped. His hand came up and brushed her cheek, thumb tracing once.

"Thank you, Alvida," he said quiet. "I rely on you more than I like to admit."

She swallowed, heart hammering. "I'm not going anywhere."

He let his hand linger one more second, then stepped back. The moment passed but the air between them stayed charged. They stood together a while longer, watching the sea, shoulders touching.

Fort Resolute kept growing. Kumegawa worked on the tome and dropped hints about undersea ruins and old weapons. Everyone trained. Naruto and Alvida sparred often. She loved the way he moved, the way he never went easy on her but never hurt her either. Sometimes after a match they ended up close, breathing hard, her hand on his chest to steady herself. He never pushed her away fast.

Then came the rumors. The 67th Marine Branch planned to blockade East Blue shipping lanes. Naruto gathered everyone in the courtyard.

"We can't let them trap us. We strike their fortress at Port Justice, free the ships they seized, and get out. Fast and hard. This is no small outpost. We go in, cause chaos, and retreat before they can pin us down."

Alvida tightened her grip on her mace. She met Naruto's eyes across the crowd. He gave her a small nod. She felt it like a promise.

Two nights later the alliance fleet closed on Port Justice under darkness. The fortress rose above a rocky promontory, massive gates, busy harbor. Alvida stood on the deck of the flagship beside Naruto. He offered her a quiet nod. She answered with a small smile and stayed close.

Hidden cliff batteries opened fire the moment they got in range. Cannonballs tore through the night. One allied ship sank fast. Alvida's landing boat got pinned by rifle fire on the eastern side. She cursed and led her men up the cliffs anyway, mace swinging, bullets skidding off her skin.

On the walls Marine officers shouted orders. It was a trap. Naruto saw it from the main deck and ordered retreat, but the sea was already full of cannon fire. No easy escape.

Alvida's group reached the depot and started sabotaging. Shamon covered her while she smashed gun emplacements. A machine-gun nest pinned them down. Bullets chewed the crates they hid behind.

In the harbor Naruto and Hachiro fought through Marines on the docks. They disabled one set of cliff cannons but more kept coming. Fires lit the night. Ships burned. Men screamed.

Alvida caught sight of Naruto sprinting across the docks, coat flying, fists dropping anyone in his way. Relief and something hotter flooded her. She fought harder.

Naruto reached the machine-gun nest and took it down himself with a burst of that strange power. Alvida's group broke free. But the fortress gates kept pouring out more Marines.

"We can't hold!" she shouted to him across the chaos.

Naruto agreed. They fell back to the few ships still seaworthy. Hachiro lost more men and raged about it. Rin and Shamon covered the rear. The alliance fled under heavy fire. Port Justice stood.

At dawn the surviving ships drifted miles away. Casualties were high. Morale low. Alvida paced the deck, fury and worry mixing. She found Naruto below decks later, shoulders tight, staring at nothing.

She walked up quiet and rested her hand on his arm. "It's not your fault."

He ran a hand through his hair. "I underestimated them. People died because of it."

Her grip tightened. "We all knew the risks. You got most of us out."

He turned. For a moment his control slipped. He pulled her into a quick, hard hug, face buried in her hair. She held on tight, heart pounding. When he let go he kept his hands on her shoulders.

"Thank you for standing with me," he said rough. "By our side."

She swallowed. "I'm not leaving. No matter what."

He gave her a small, tired smile. "I know."

On a barren beach Naruto gathered the surviving leaders. "We lost the battle. Not the war. We have Fort Resolute. We heal. We rebuild. We come back smarter."

Some argued it was impossible. Others wanted blood now. Naruto shut it down calm and firm. "My leadership stands. We plan better. We survive first."

Alvida stepped up beside him. "I stand with Naruto. Anyone who doubts him can leave now."

A couple did. The rest stayed. Hachiro spat but nodded once at Naruto. "You fought beside us. I won't forget that."

They sailed back to Fort Resolute, battered but still together.

At the fortress time slowed. Wounded healed. Ships repaired. Kumegawa kept working on the tome. Naruto trained with everyone, Alvida most of all. Sometimes after sparring they sat together on the walls, her head on his shoulder for a few quiet minutes, his arm around her waist. He never let it go further. She never pushed. But the wanting grew between them like a living thing.

One evening on the ramparts, after a long day of work, Alvida found him alone again. She walked up, slid her arms around his waist from behind, and rested her cheek between his shoulder blades.

"You carry too much," she said quiet.

He covered her hands with his. Turned in her arms. Their faces were inches apart. She rose on her toes. He met her halfway. The kiss was slow, deep, full of everything they had been holding back. His hands settled on her hips. Hers slid up into his hair. For a long moment the whole world narrowed to that.

When they broke apart he rested his forehead against hers, breathing hard.

"Alvida…"

"I know," she whispered. "The work comes first. But I'm here. When you're ready."

He kissed her again, softer this time, then pulled her close against his chest. They stood like that a long while, the sea wind around them, the fortress lights glowing behind.

Fort Resolute stood ready. The alliance had taken hits and kept going. Naruto Uzumaki remained its heart. Alvida remained at his side, no longer just smitten but something steadier, something that felt like it could last.

And somewhere out there the World Government was starting to notice.

The sea waited. So did the next fight.

And so did they.
