Chapter One
Witch Hunt
Naruto
Konoha
February 2, 2000
"We truly are sorry, Naruto. We were hopeful that this treatment would at the very least slow down the progression of Sasuke’s condition and perhaps give us a building foundation towards finding a cure, but…unfortunately, there hasn’t been any positive changes from last weeks numbers. In fact, his levels of degradation has accelerated in the last week. With this treatment being experimental, there was a slim chance his numbers would trend in the wrong direction, and, sadly, Sasuke, your results fall within that slim percentile. At this point, it’s best we discontinue this treatment entirely and start from scratch again. Tsunade-sama will continue to work with his samples, but, for now, there’s simply nothing further we can do. We’ll reach out to you the moment anything changes. Good luck to you both."
Tonight’s onyx sky was a near endless void, starless and dotted with a sparse scattering of opaque clouds, yet saved from total darkness by the eerie silvery illumination of the dual moons hanging suspended within the cosmic backdrop. Shining bright above the Village Hidden in Leaves, Ceprian, the bigger of the two celestial bodies, sat looming behind Zyran, creating a beautiful navy ring around the miniature sphere’s circumference. It was a serene image, one filled with wonder and serenity, but it was completely lost on the two men leaving behind what had essentially been their last hope.
“That was a waste of time,” the last vampire of the Uchiha scoffed, stepping through the doors of the clinic and out into the crisp night, “I told you that before you booked the appointment.”
Irritation roared to the forefront like a raging tide, momentarily eclipsing the soul deep grief of the heartsick blonde following behind the brunette.
“Not doing this with you tonight, if you’re not gonna be positive then fuckin stop talking,” the werefox growled.
Pessimistic, cynical, grumpy on the best of days, Sasuke Uchiha had never been anything close to happy-go-lucky in his life, and Naruto was no stranger to his mate’s dower default. He was pretty much used to it having spent their childhood through adulthood teasing him out of it, but after the news they’d been sucker punched with tonight, Naruto couldn’t take Sasuke’s negativity right now.
This appointment’s revelations were painful enough.
Jaw tightening, Naruto passed his lover by at a clipped pace, seething and fighting the urge to give into the violence festering beneath his tan skin.
A stiff breeze ruffled his bright blonde locks, the cool air struggling against the heat radiating from his body.
This whole night felt like a bad dream.
He wanted it be a bad dream.
He’d had hope, fucking optimistic idiot that he was.
Hope that this was it, that things would finally start to get better after all the shit they’d gone through just to get their foot in the door of this place!
Senju Healing and Treatment.
A place where the impossible was made possible. Where miracles were common place.
For twenty-six days straight, morning, noon and night, Naruto clogged up the lines of the notorious place of healing ever since the clinic finally started taking new patients. They’d known him by name (and voice) by day three, and came to expect his calls like clockwork. He liked to think his dogged persistence propelled him to the front of the line faster, he could certainly be an annoying bastard even when he wasn’t trying to be. Whatever the hell had gotten him in, he hadn’t wasted a moment, nagging Sasuke into filling out the paperwork they sent, stubbornly dragging his lover to every appointment there after, and arguing until he was blue in the face for Sasuke to follow the treatment plan.
A treatment plan that had been nothing short of brutal, even for the tough as nails vampire.
Naruto himself hadn’t been spared either, suffering along side his life partner as he was taken through hell, feeling helpless and useless to do anything to help.
Telling himself and his mate that they just had to get through this.
That it would all be worth it when they reached that final consultation with the legendary ‘Slug Queen’ and were presented their own miracle healing.
Despair bled through his anger, dragging him closer to the pit of grief.
To learn that even she couldn’t help them was a blow he should have prepared for but hadn’t.
He hadn’t thought for a second they’d get this far and come away empty handed. Out of everyone that had gone in for help, what were the chance that they wouldn’t receive a miracle?
That the illustrious cursoligist specialist was stomped for the first time since her arrival.
The female Carcolh had blown into Konoha a few years ago, making the rounds at every gambling hall in the village and losing at all of them. Kakashi-sensei had had to step in to smooth over the riled tempers of unpaid vendors receiving IOU’s instead of what was owed, finally ordering the out of control gambling addict to settle her outstanding balances, only for the woman to offer her services as a Narturalist healer in lieu of payment for the many debts she racked up in her drunken betting, a service that was in very low demand.
Naturals, nearly every species known to the world boasted their own innate healing abilities.
Some mended faster than others, some shed damaged flesh or licked wounds closed.
Very few species required any outside assistance.
Hospitals and clinics were small and scarce, used primarily for offspring too young to heal, those too old to regenerate, the few Naturals without natural healing and individuals like Sasuke.
Naturals suffering beneath a supernatural illness.
The new Carcolh, Tsunade Senju, was a deity’s blessing, creating new treatment for Naturals afflicted by curses, revolutionizing care for those deemed terminal.
Instantly turning herself into a highly paid, highly sought after cursoligist.
They’d waited years to get to a chance to see her, spent half their savings to cover the doctor visits and treatment cost, and it didn’t fuckin matter, all that waiting and wishing only to be turned away with nothing to show for their efforts.
He couldn’t even process it all fully right now.
Instead, Naruto set off for home, quiet aggression roiling from his stiff body in massive waves, parting the heavy sidewalk traffic with nothing but his festering presence as he navigated the streets of Konoha, fighting his temper with each step.
Gorgons slithered from his path, their inky black eyes and wiggling snakes watching his movement wearily.
Nosy gargoyles dipped low on their public perches hanging over various shops and eateries, tracking his clipped pace with morbid interest.
No matter what Sasuke said, no matter what had happened today, this wasn’t as waste of time.
Turning over every stone, following every lead no matter how seemingly hopeless, moving hell and earth for a solution to Sasuke’s condition was anything but a waste of time, and Naruto was getting so fucking sick of feeling like he was the only one that felt that way. Today sucked worse than anything they’d dealt with in a while, without a doubt this was a crushing blow, but that was no reason to give up. Answers weren’t going to just fall into their laps, they had to work for it, towards it, together .
“I’m not going to another specialist, this is the last one.”
He turned abruptly, every muscle lining his towering stature swelling with violence, straining his dark gray shirt and bright orange pants, “Sasuke-”
“No, Naruto,” Sasuke hissed, the temperature around him plummeting, drawing a light dusting of frost to his long sleeved light gray shirt, “you’re tapping a dry vein, and you need to face the truth. My curse can’t be treated, it can’t be cured, and spending what time we have left chasing a pipe dream is only going to hurt both of us in the long run.”
Pain wrapped it’s fingers around his throat, rendering him unable to force words of denial through his lips.
Naruto knew that pain was alive in his glowing blue eyes when Sasuke turned his own midnight hued gaze to the ground, his pale jaw flexing subtly, resignation sliding his eyes closed as he continued in a voice that was flatter than the paved walkway they stood on, “if we’re going to be together, you need to accept reality and find a way to live with it.”
Live with it.
Vile words that eased the constriction in his throat and coaxed his temper to a full on boil.
Live with it!
How the fuck could he?
He was barely hanging on to his sanity trying to ‘live’ with their half forged bond as it was.
Living day in and day out without the melding of their chakra and the merging of their essence, denied nearly every intimacy the werefox craved , that he needed to thrive and function, holding back his instincts and primitive impulses in an effort to ‘live’ with the curse that kept them apart.
It was painful.
Slowly but surely pushing him towards madness.
Killing him inside.
They were two halves of a whole unable to fuse, a shallow union writhe with so many gaps. He felt like he was being hollowed out inside, his heart squeezed and his kitsune forever mourning and roaring its agony every minute of every day.
A vampire without a full blooding was hell, Naruto knew their unfinished bond was hard on his lover, no matter how much he tried to hide it, but a werefox without a complete mating was an agony without equal.
He walked around with his soul in constant torment.
His limbs felt tied down with unseen weights, his skin often irritated and stinging. His body pulled taunt with a tension that never eased, aches that settled so deep into his muscles and bones they felt like they’d always been apart of his make up. Misery kept his mind uninterested in the things that used to give him joy, and frustration kept him fighting to restrain the ticking time bomb that was his temper from detonating over the smallest of inconveniences.
There were nights he wanted to break down.
Days he couldn’t eat though his stomach growled.
Mornings where he was so tired he’d lie next to the rigid body of his sunlight induced slumbering lover, only for sleep to allude him.
Darkness ate away at his mind, body and heart.
Naruto had been living with ‘reality’ for a long fuckin time, fighting his instincts, denying himself the closeness and connection his soul hungered for because he loved Sasuke, and he’d rather suffer with him than not have the partial union they had now. He knew Sasuke loved him, that he was just as gutted by their limitations and Naruto’s slow decline, but right now, he was being an insensitive asshole to even fix his mouth to say that he needed to ‘live’ with their fucked up situation.
To unilaterally decide that a completed bond and happy life was not in their future and that they should just give up trying at all.
“I’m done being pricked, studied and cut open for some miracle cure that’s never going to happen,” Sasuke declared, pushing the right button to tip werefox’s temper over the boiling point, “I’m not a fuckin lab rat-”
“ What you are is too goddamn stubborn to pull your head out of the fuckin coffin and realize you’re not the only one suffering, dattebayo ,” Naruto snapped, voice distorted as it plunged several octaves below his normal baritone rasp.
Scorching heat filled the air, turning the cool night stifling.
Nearby Naturals fled.
A centaur couple backpedaled, gargoyles flew away and a group of harpy younglings flapped their dark feathered wings in distress as they scattered.
“And you’re too fucking naive to know when to quit!” Sasuke retorted, flashing fangs.
Naruto bristled, a ripple passing beneath his flesh, potent chakra leaking through his pores out into the space around them. Heat touched his skin, his narrowed eyes bleeding from blue to crimson. Konoha’s busy street ground to a halt, several citizens backing away from the heated exchange and the tell-tale signs of an interspecies clash brewing.
Wouldn’t be the first time a lover’s spat got out of hand, but Konoha’s only living werefox and last Uchiha vampire hashed out their problems in a way that was uniquely disruptive, and to many, pretty scary.
Luckily for the crowd, a referee arrived, breaking through the tension.
Naruto gradually allowed his lips to cover his elongated canines, while Sasuke tucked his own fangs away.
The scent of charred cherries tickled his nose and moments later, Sakura dropped down in front of the quarreling lovers, folding her pink wings to her spine. She crossed her arms over her chest, drawing her pretty hot pink shirt tighter around her lithe body. Tapping her foot, she waited in vain for an explanation, snake locks swish with irritation at the little public scene they’d created.
Naruto glared at a nearby coffee shop, not in the mood to explain or listen to her bitch.
Sasuke no doubt finding his own place to stare at that didn’t put Sakura Haruno directly in his line of sight.
Sakura glanced from one pouting male to the other scowling man and sighed.
“Whatever you two are fighting about now, save it,” she huffed, “we have a mission.”

Hokage Tower
Constructed in the heart of Konoha, the Hokage Tower stood as a bright red symbol of authority and unity, housing the leader of one of the greatest shinobi villages in the world.
Inside this place of governance, the sixth Hokage; a lazy, mostly tardy, unapologetically perverted, one eyed humanoid giant sat straight backed and serious for the first time Naruto could recall seeing him since, well, ever.
Sure, Kakashi Hatake had a ‘no-nonsense’ mode at times, usually in times of international conflict between nations or a random zombie uprising threatening the population, but even during an undead emergency, he didn’t radiate doom and gloom. Inside the large space of his office, his chakra was suffocating and heavy, filling the room with that dangerous rush unique to a powerful Cyclops. Giants in general were pretty terrifying, even when compressed into Kakashi’s currently reduced size.
Instantly on alert, Naruto closed the door behind him and moved to stand between his lover and their female teammate.
Interlocking his gauntlet covered hands, the Hokage wasted no time, “what we’re about to discuss goes no further than this room.”
Pushing his domestic drama to the back of his mind, Naruto tuned his pointed ears to his leader, that mental switch from civilian to shinobi straightening his spine.
“The mission I have for you three tonight is potentially one of the most dangerous, most critically important mission you’ve ever been assigned to, to date, and, of particular interest to you two,” Kakashi announced, sweeping his gaze between the two men, “rumors have been circulating in the Land of Giants, rumors of a witch living in the woods behind-”
Naruto inhaled sharply, listing towards the stone faced Cyclops, “a witch?! Are you sure?!”
“Would you keep your voice down?” Sakura hissed, bubblegum locks stirring, “how the hell are we going to keep this information in this room if you’re blabbing it out loud enough for the whole Tower to hear! And quit asking dumb questions, Hokage-sama just said they’re rumors , that’s why he’s probably sending us to investigate if they’re true or not!”
Naruto glared at his teammate, baring his canines, his own temper stoking.
He was a hot-head to be sure, always had been, and if not for his furry transformations and lack of serpentine hair, he could easily pass for a Fury.
Some days, it felt like they had two Furies on Team 7, or so Sasuke claimed. His fed up Uchiha lover often grumbled about his minuscule self control and rapid fire temper, demanding time and time again that he leave the ‘fury routine’ to the actual Fury, Sakura.
Naruto couldn’t help it this time.
He felt seconds from a full blown kitsune temper tantrum.
On the best of nights, Naruto labored beneath a pressure cooker of stress and worry concocted by his never ending anguish over Sasuke’s ailment and the maddening incompletion of their mating bond.
The emotional strain kept him a hop and skip away from grabbing the nearest living creature and ripping its head from its shoulders, but to couple that with the devastating finality of ‘we can’t help you’ from the cursoligist specialist, Sasuke effectively demanding Naruto accept his impending death, and now ‘ rumors ’ of witches appearing decades after their supposed extinction at the hands of the Elemental Nations, presenting not only a horrendous threat to the world at large but as a last ditch opportunity to reverse Sasuke’s curse, Naruto was a volcano poised to erupt.
Tonight was full of more ups and downs than he knew how to handle.
It really wasn’t his fault that his anxiety was through the roof.
He was an emotional wreck, and had been for a long fuckin time.
Even he could admit that he wasn’t himself anymore and hadn’t been in years. Not since he turned eighteen and learned that Sasuke was his mate, that Sasuke had known since they were young boys and didn’t tell him. Not since Sasuke revealed the details of his wasting curse that would not only cut his life short, but threaten Naruto’s own life should they ever fully consummate their union.
And while his life was a mess right now, he couldn’t regret the path he was on.
At this point, Naruto would rather die with him, because if Sasuke did succumb to fate, he wouldn’t be long behind him anyway.
What werefox could continue on without their mate anyway?
“Watch who you’re flashing teeth at, werewolf,” Sakura hissed, serpentine locks raised and hissing along with her.
A vein pulsed at his temple, irritation dusting his skin in a thin layer of carmine fur.
He glared at her and the pink snakes attached to her head, growling out, “do I look like Kiba to you?”
Naruto hated that comparison and she knew it.
He wasn’t a fucking werewolf.
A derivative of werewolf his genetics claimed, an anomaly to be sure, but no, not a goddamn werewolf. His fox influenced metamorphosis was unique and rare, the only one of its kind now. He took pride in that, he cherished that part of himself that was forever tied to his long deceased parents. Sakura didn’t know that part of his sensitivity about his species, he had never shared that with anyone but Sasuke. All she knew was that it riled him up quicker than most things and Sakura was nothing if not efficient, always going straight for what ticked him off the most.
“Well,” she shrugged slyly, “when you go all fangs, claws and drooling maw-”
“Children,” Kakashi interrupted sharply, filling the room with displeasure, "now is not the time for petty bickering."
They quieted, Sakura offering a contrite apology, her snaking locks laying flat and harmless against her cranium.
Naruto struggled, jaw flexing as his fiery temper refused to cool completely.
“Now, as Sakura correctly guessed, I want you three to investigate these claims,” white robes ruffling as he sat back in his chair, the sixth Hokage fixed the trio with a hard stare, “interview the citizens and follow any leads you come across. If there is a witch, if there is any possibility that one escaped the purge, it’s imperative that we find it and subdue it immediately.”
Naruto held back a disgusted rumble in his chest.
He hated witches, he probably hated them even more than Sasuke did.
Nearly all of the world’s problems lay at the feet of those magic wielding monsters.
Before their supposed purge from their world, that group of self important, soulless demons had seen to the eradication, subjugation and suffering of many Natural species, and unleashing plagues that lingered hundreds of years later.
They’d taken his parents and Sasuke’s.
They’d taken his future with his mate.
Far as Naruto was concerned, the only good witch was a dead one, and he knew there wasn’t a Natural amongst them that didn’t believe that. too
They were a disease infecting every thing in proximity, but…
If one of those sick fucks was really alive and they could subdue it without outright killing it, maybe Sasuke had a chance.
Maybe they had a chance at a future.
Naruto glance at his soul mate.
Dark eyes glinting, jaw hard enough to crush metal, Sasuke looked just as grimly determined as he felt.
As though that knowledge, that shared meeting of the minds had kick started his senses and environmental awareness, Naruto glanced at his own arm, finally noticing how cold it felt. A thin film of ice lined his arm nearest the silently irate vampire, the intensity of the ice threatening his appendage with a round of frostbite. Stirring his inner temperature, Naruto turned his attention back to the Hokage as he melted the frigid show of temper away.
“I understand what this could mean for you both, and how you feel personally about this adversary,” Kakashi continued, “if you cannot handle this mission professionally then-”
“We can handle it,” Sasuke countered before Naruto could open his mouth.
Onyx eye assessing, the Sixth Hokage measured the validity of that statement, bouncing from one man to his partner. Naruto willed himself to calm, hoping he hadn’t sprouted a tail, though he hadn’t heard any tell-tale stretching of fabric, nor did he feel any weight at his coccyx bone.
Satisfied, Kakashi gave a nod, his snowy white hair shifting with the motion, “then your mission is to investigate the validity of these witch sightings and if you do spot a witch, you are to capture it and bring it to Konoha immediately. Capture is the priority, however, you’re going to be up against an unknown level of magic, if capture is not a possibility, you have leave to kill it if you can.”
If not for the current circumstances, Naruto would be down for that last part, but he was hoping against hope they could manage the former.
He'd sure as shit try his damnedest to make it happen.
“You three are amongst the strongest shinobi Konoha has to offer, amongst the strongest the shinobi world has seen in decades, however, none of you have ever done battle with a witch. Naturals in general have not encountered a witch in over two hundred years, not since the First Hokage’s era, and that absence has left us all unprepared and ill equipped to predict the exact danger level of this creature. You will all be flying blind, so be on your guard.”
His dark eye touched them all, one at a time, spearing them with the seriousness of the situation, and his concern as their former sensei.
“Now, while you all are powerful in your own right, no being is infallible, if you are unable to capture or eradicate this threat, escape immediately. Do not risk your lives, is that understood?”
“Yes sir,” they responded in unison.
“Dismissed.”
Naruto bared his teeth, a predatory, determined scowl stretching his lips as he stalked down the halls of the Hokage tower.
Time for a witch hunt.
